“I am looking for the Captain of this firehouse,” he heard the voice say. He heard Tommy say, “Oh, you must be the person replacing me. Let me get Captain Nash for you.” He was friendly, but Bobby could hear a hint of mockery in that response.
“You said Captain Nash?” the voice said, and without a doubt Bobby knew by the way he said his last name who was standing down in that bay and wasn’t going to be sticking around. He dropped the spoon he was stirring with, and it crashed to the ground as he bolted from around the counter towards the edge of the loft.
“Buck,” he yelled, and the man with his back towards him kept walking. He started to take the stairs, and the figure kept walking, “Buck.” He could hear Hen and Chimeny following and saying, “Who is Buck?” but he didn’t have time to explain. He said the kid’s name several more times as he reached the bottom of the stairs.
And when the figure was almost out of the firehouse doors, Bobby finally used his fatherly voice and yelled, “EVAN JAMES BUCKLEY YOU BETTER TURN YOUR ASS AROUND RIGHT NOW.” The figure stopped moving, but he did not turn around.

Carlos looks the way he usually does when he’s trying to decide how to phrase a question or comment without hurting TK’s feelings.
“What?” TK prods. “Just ask it.”
“I just…” Carlos flounders, probably in part because of the question but mostly because of the Oxy in his bloodstream. “I guess I’m wondering why…”
“Why I liked the high from opioids?” TK asks. It’s not the first time he’s been asked this question. It’s not the first time he’s tried to explain either.
“Yeah, I want to understand you better.” Carlos breathes. His pupils are still small. He’s still at least a little high. It chills TK to his bone.

“First stop,” the cabbie calls out as they pull up to TK’s townhouse. Golden streetlights shimmer on the pavement, causing the Sparkle Grain to shine. Carlos leans across the seat, getting closer to TK than he has all night.
“Oh wow,” He breathes out, and TK’s happy to find that he can have that kind of impact too. Carlos looks at TK with mischief and mirth in his eyes. “This is you?”
“Yeah,” TK answers, sounding entranced. He’s noticed that Carlos hasn’t moved away, and has to do everything to calm the butterflies fluttering in his stomach. All Carlos does is grin, as if he’s waiting for more.
He thinks about what Angel said; about casual. How he hasn’t felt tense since Carlos’ brown eyes beckoned him in. He cocks an eyebrow and smiles before offering, “You want a tour?”

Playing cool and corporate, Carlos answers, “Well, sir, when you informed me of what happened, I thought we'd better take a detour and check out the scene.”

This is one time when Carlos put his life at risk to save a life, but ended up being the one needing to be rescued and be saved.
