Gai pivoted on his heel the second he heard the scream reverberate outside the cave. He didn’t hesitate and headed straight for the source. Even when the stone structure began to collapse and an enemy shinobi appeared at the opening of the cave, he didn’t falter in his mission to save his friend, destroying the boulder that would have crushed her in the deep.
It wasn’t until the dust had settled, that he realized his mistake. That there was not one, but three ninjas in the cave, none of which were from Iwagakure. That the person he intended to save was not among them.
No, these were three young, enemy ninjas from Konoha, whom he had accidentally rescued.
“…You’re not…” He trailed off in the short, tense moment of silence. “...Oh, this... I'm never going to live this down...”

The ghosts of Team Minato haunted him every time he tried to close his eyes, so when Kakashi saw his former team standing in front of him, his first instinct was to attack, to destroy the unrelenting nightmares that consumed him for years. He fought viciously, desperately trying to crawl his way out of the abyss, when he heard that voice again.
Everything became too much for him to bear. For him to hear his sensei’s voice again, to hear the kindness, the caring, the concern and asking him how he had been like he had just seen him yesterday.

The small 4 year old had returned because some of the kids had been mean to him- Everyone had heard by now that Hatake Sakumo was a disgrace to the village. Before Sakumo could plunge his tanto into his own stomach, he heard the door open and then close and the small whimpers Kakashi only let out whenever he was crying. The boy rarely cried after his mother left.

Minato could practically hear Sarutobi laughing at him now, as he looked at his new students. He must’ve gotten a great laugh while assigning this generation’s teams. As they started to bicker, Minato could already feel a headache coming on.
He could decimate hundreds of enemies and yet a trio of children somehow have him mentally falling to his knees in despair.
“No,” Kakashi said, his voice muffled between his legs, “you were supposed to be responsible and tell him not to do it again. If it came from you, he would listen.”
Minato looked at Kakashi and realized how young he truly is, with his head tucked in between his legs to hide his embarrassment and small voice disappointed.
Minato’s eyes softened as Obito laughed victoriously, slumping onto Kakashi’s shoulder, and yeah these were definitely his kids, even if they were brats a lot of the times.
But Minato wouldn’t trade them for the world. Even with the war raging on, even with the world throwing its worst at their feet.
Unfortunately for destiny, Team Minato is filled with the most stubborn people in Konoha. And they were determined to keep their family together, no matter what.

“No,” he said quietly. “She’s not a survivor.”
He looked at her again—really looked. The ragged blond hair, the whisker marks, the stillness that wasn’t fear but memory.
“She’s the warning we didn’t understand.”
