Summary
Just like almost everything else in his life, Arnold J. Rimmer has a complex about death; specifically the one he suffered three million years ago. When presented with the option of either keeping the last man alive sane or blinking out of existence never to be seen again, the choice is - obviously - relatively simple.
Unfortunately for Rimmer, the last man alive happens to be a complete and total gimp, and he has his work cut out for him.
This is a semi-anthology(?) series which follows the highs and lows of Rimmer and Lister's relationship from Series I to XII. While the holographic version of Rimmer throws himself head-first into his new role as the custodian of Lister's sanity, he must also grapple with his identity as a simulated approximation of a dead man. In the meantime, Lister must come to terms with the disturbing fact that his annoying bunkmate is slowly but surely growing on him.

Summary
Upon asking Holly if there's any way to improve Rimmer's existence as a hologram, Lister learns about hard-light technology that Red Dwarf's senior staff kept secret. The drawback? It poses a major risk to Holly’s processors thanks to no ship maintenance for 3 million years, and thus the upgrade is off the cards.
With Rimmer defeated, wallowing in self-pity and generally moping about, however, Lister becomes determined to learn how to complete Red Dwarf’s full maintenance in order to upgrade Rimmer to hard-light. When he puts his mind to something, he does it, slobbiness be damned.
Set a few weeks after "The End" (series 1) and weaving Legion's tech into earlier Dwarf lore.

The sparkly purple-black basque and fishnet stockings and suspenders were purposely designed to draw as much attention to the areas they weren’t concealing as those which they just about were.

“A cuddlebug, sir,” Kryten explained as if it weren’t gut-wrenchingly humiliating for Rimmer to be going through this ordeal. “It appears to be some sort of holovirus that causes psychological and physical distress in the absence of physical contact.”
Rimmer ends up with a virus. Aptly named a 'cuddlebug,' it requires the host to be in physical contact with their partner to avoid a slew of negative symptoms. The virus perceives his partner to be Lister. Cuddles ensue.
