Sending Kili and Fili scouting the watchtower had only seemed natural, Thorin hadn't realized it was a trap and that he'd just literally offered one of his sister-sons to the Pale Orc. And while physical wounds can heal with a little time, psychological scars can run much, much deeper. Being feared was definitely not an outcome Thorin had ever expected or been prepared for when he'd ridden up to Ravenhill, much less by his own nephew.
Never mind the fact that a broken heir could also pose a serious problem for the crown... -

I wrote this after I dreamt it. It's quick and I have embellished it slightly but I just wanted to get it out of my head and write it down, I'm not asking for feedback, I just wanted to post it. :) It's hard to explain why it means so much to me but it definitely describes how I feel daily, with the cold and loneliness of reality and the cruel, depressing world we live in against the beauty and warmth of fantasy and of Middle Earth. Those who know me well enough will know how much of a Thorin fangirl I am and I miss him dearly since The Hobbit films finished with his death. :'(
I like to think that the note Thorin leaves behind in this story is for me. It is just a dream and Thorin cannot see me but he has the same longing as me.
The story is from my point of view but I do not who is Thorin is in my dream. :)

It was an awful tugging void within him, not an ache but an absence, and it was there for as long as he could remember. There were some things able to alleviate it, temporarily, but nothing ever more concrete; and he could not search for a cure, not properly, because such things — such weaknesses — were not tolerated by his strong and proud people. Especially not for royalty.
A quick drabble about Thorin's loneliness and the things which heal it.

Summary
The battle is over and the company of Thorin Oakenshield, with the help of the armies of the Iron Hills, King Thranduil, and King Bard, have defended Erebor. Thorin, Fíli, and Kíli survived the final battle and now the three lay recovering in the halls of their reclaimed kingdom. Fíli and Kíli are quick to bounce back from their injuries while Thorin has a harder time. His recovery is marred by periods of infection and fever, and all the company can do is hope that the fever breaks and he wakes up. Bilbo while homesick and missing the Shire stays in Erebor, determined to be there for Thorin when he wakes up as there is much needing to be resolved between them, and much that had been left unsaid. When the fever finally breaks and Thorin opens his eyes it's cause for celebration. But when he has no recollection of the past thirty months and doesn't recognize Bilbo's face, they realize something has gone wrong.
