The first gift was soap. A handful of miniature heart-shaped little soaps shoved into Zazzalil's palms in passing between lectures. Zazzy wasn't a fucking hotel guest, but she took the present gratefully nonetheless. The cross stitch frame was a much greater surprise. Home-baked pottery was even more unexpected and by the time Keeri started composing her music, she began to ask herself what the actual fuck was going on.

The first time her parents told her about soulmates, Zazzalil had just turned ten. It felt like when they told her Santa wasn't real, or when they told her about periods : finally, she was part of the grown-ups, she knew about things that only grown-ups knew about. Her seven-year-old cousin had been there, and the adults had told him not to listen, because he was too young. That meant Zazzalil was old enough, and that knowledge made her feel more powerful than ever.
Of course, like when she learnt that Santa wasn't real, and when she learnt what periods were, the first thing she had done was tell Keeri. She told her how there was one person she was meant to love forever, and how everything she would write or draw on her skin would appear on her soulmate's skin. They were both delighted. They knew they shouldn't tell the others. The others weren't grown-ups. Even Jemilla.

Summer camp was going to be fun, Zazzalil thought. She was going to spend two whole months at the Tribe, with her best friend in forever, Keeri, and a bunch of hopefully cool people. There was absolutely no reason this could go wrong. She'd read the description on the internet. Molag, a black queer woman, had decided that she wanted to bring LGBTQ+ kids together in the summer, so they could feel less alone than she had. Molag seemed fun. Molag seemed tough. Molag seemed smart Molag seemed everything Zazzalil aspired to be.
There was also Jemilla.
Jemilla was eighteen, pansexual, gorgeous, with great hair, great clothes, everything ! She was also incredibly smart. She appointed herself as the leader of the tribe, and didn't let anyone unpack before she called a meeting to organize the summer. If they were going to be left on their own for two months, with no adults except at the entrance, they should have a plan. Zazzalil immediately decided that Jemilla was kind of annoying.
