As the boy looked up at the stars through the window, he felt a familiar, empty ache in his heart join him as a silent, comfortless companion. And with how cold and heartachingly empty the shelter was while Dream was away, the dark cavity in his chest was only dug deeper.
That feeling, Tommy believed, was called loneliness– a complex, deep-seated emotion he had long gotten used to as his days grew longer without company. Even on days when he was really, genuinely happy, it would strike to remind him that he was painfully alone, because he knew well that the galaxy was full of creatures who hated him, and they wouldn't hesitate to slaughter him like they did to everyone else of his kind.
But that's just how it was when you were the last Human alive in the entire universe.
Or, Tommy's been raised as the last remaining Human alive on an isolated dwarf planet, where he's grown up shielded from the dangers that sought to kill him for his Human parts to be consumed. That is, until a strange spaceship touched down and brought with it even stranger people– including someone who looked strikingly, impossibly Human.

Summary
Human legs are so weird.
They bend weird, they have no scales to protect them, and there’s a couple digits at the end that seem more of a liability than helpful.
Tommy’s proven correct when he tries to stand on them, pushing himself off the sand and toppling forward all in the same action. So they’re weak as well. How do humans get around all day, every day? Never mind the fact that they seem useless in water. How do they swim?
Even worse are his hands, similar in form to his human legs—in the sense of having multiple digits—but these ones are long. They bend like the legs, two knobs allowing Tommy to clench and unclench them repeatedly.
How peculiar.
or: Tommy is a mer, now human. Wilbur and Phil help him return back home.

His new birdie looked so much like him and, oh, that warmed Phil’s heart. Both males had fluffy blonde hair and blue eyes (his fledgling’s ones were so angelic, much like the rest of the boy - Techno and Wilbur were going to love him) but instead of the dark black feathers that the older sported, the young bird had white and red feathers protruding from both his ears and his back, so very alike to Phil except both were considerably smaller which was expected from a fledgling. Though, this fledgling didn’t have any flight feathers. Mayhaps he was a flightless bird. Oh! That meant he couldn’t leave them.
“Are you a fucking kidnapper?”
“No, of course not little one. We’re just going to fix up your hurts, okay? There’s no need to worry, birdie.” Phil was a good liar, it came with the self-made job.
