As she writhed in pain, shadows surrounded Jane. Everyone told her to stop jogging after dark. That she would end up the subject of a Keith Morrison Dateline special. One of those awful segments with a catchy alliterative name. Maybe ‘Trans Woman Takes Terrifying Tumble’ or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, she knew. Knew the stats. As a trans femme, Jane's sadly breaking records not with her sprint, but by living past 35 in a world where her body is misunderstood, fetishized, and even despised. But maybe running through New York's shadowed streets helped Jane escape a darkness inside. Maybe there are times when she wanted to get caught. Hoping to punish her cruel skin with a smirk seen in a flash or a Someone gaining on her tail. Then again, pepper spray still bounced in her fanny pack. A pocket knife tucked into her waistband. So maybe not. But in the end, ankle twisted and alone, the culprit is her own clumsiness.
A tall guy rounded the corner, feet skidding to a stop. “Whoa…” He gasped too loud, plucking out an earbud. “Are you okay?”
