Rufus only groaned once before turning around to bury his face in his pillow- only to stop as he felt oddly... slick.
Cursing, his hand flew toward the small lamp stationed on his bedside table, turning it on to illuminate the side of his bed. In the same movement, he also ripped the blanket off his body.
What he saw underneath his blanket could've easily been described as a crime scene. There was blood everywhere, on his thighs all the way down to his knees, on the blanket, the mattress- there was no speck of white that wasn't covered in the deep crimson.

Additional note: The title of the fic and the various references to lilies and poison is a call to the history of witchcraft with the specific use of the mandrakes which look like lilies on Rufus’s Dark Nation/Darkstar coin. Appearances aren’t what they seem. I suppose you could call this a head canon but I see Rufus as a black mage. Mandragora/mandrakes are referred to as “deadly nightshade” throughout history, and I chose to call the fic “deadly shade” to indicate shade as absence of light. There is also the intentional slang meaning of “shade”.
