"Well, as I'm sure you know, you're very bright," started Master Ikithon, almost conspiratorially, his eyes twinkling. Bren ducked his head, embarrassingly pleased by the compliment. "Top of your class, you'll be a credit to our great empire one day."
A credit to the Empire. The words rang through his ears. It was all he had ever wanted, to help people and protect them. That dream seemed so close he could almost taste it, sending shivers of excitement down his back. In spite of himself, Bren glowed with pride. If Master Ikithon, one of the most important people in the whole of the Empire, thought he would make something of himself then he couldn't let him down.)

And Caleb left.It had only been a month since he’d left rehab and come to this school, and he was already being recommended for a troubled kid's group. So, overall, he was off to a shining start."
In which Caleb has a lot of trauma to work through, the Mighty Nein is A Lot To Handle (tm), and Caleb's parents are lowkey my favorite characters.
The first work in a shamelessly self indulgent, stupidly elaborate High School AU. Basically, the Mighty Nein are shoved into an after school program together. Slow burn bonding, angst, and probably cuddling to follow.

He’d become a little bitter, remembering how he’d somehow managed to catch the chicken pox and so had been locked up in his tiny attic room, sick and itchy and only discovering that two other children from town had been selected and left after he had healed. Oh how different his life would have been if only he hadn’t gone out apple picking with little Gisela from a few doors down.
But well, there was no turning back time after all.
And really, it was all for the best if he was honest, after all, those other two families were gone now, and if that wasn't a warning, he didn't know what was. So instead he decided to enjoy the little things in life. -

He wants to age without magical aid. For science. And (let's be honest) for love, too. It starts simply enough. Essek begins to sleep more than trance. And then as the trances lessen in frequency, he feels different somehow. More hurried. He doesn't know why at first, except that he does, at least he hopes. When he finally confronts Corellon about it, they try a new tactic, suggesting a new place (instead of that sliver of sanctuary with "The Luxon") Arvandor. But Essek doesn't like that, either. He wants freedom to choose his soul's direction. And he can't when it keeps being reborn as an elf into the material plane. He wants to fly through time and space, to learn what bigger thing connects all these souls, what grander omni-dimensional organism it makes up. He’s not looking forward to explaining himself to Caleb, but he’ll figure out a way.
There are sweet things. There are philosophical things. There are arguments and conflicts. Working through those conflicted times is what gives them strength to be better. It grows their bond, and with whatever greater love blooms from that maybe it’s possible to fuel something that could destroy a great evil.

Una brought Winter's Crest home with them, but though it's time for cheer she still mourns her oldest son's "death." While out toy shopping, she meets a man about Bren's age named Caleb Widogast. Una gives him sipping chocolate as a love letter to her lost son, and offers some advice.
Caleb doesn't catch the older woman's name. He determines to pay back her kindness with gifts all the same, and drags Essek over to their house.
Angst and surprises ensue.
