A female human wizard whose magic has grown rusty after years of ordinary life, is the only one unlucky to be infected with an alien larva set to overwrite her mind and body. Seeking a cure, alone except for one friend, she leans on her analytical mind and logic, but her every well-considered decision ends in a new disaster.
[Fandom blind friendly but contains spoilers the way tea contains liquid.]
If not for the inserted headcanons and alternative companions, it might count as a novelization.

“I only borrowed it! He's never been awake enough to ask about spares, so. It was easier to just sort it out myself.”
“It would have been easier to ask me,” Astarion points out.
“Mmmm,” Gale hums, doubtfully. “I don't know if I'd ever consider you the ‘easier’ option, Astarion, I feel that would be doing your commitment to cantankerousness a great disservice.”

The rest of the night passed with lighter conversations, until a watch was established. And Ursa didn't ask to talk after the others had gone to sleep. She didn't come into his tent and ask to sleep together, to touch him, to pry. She made sure the fire was tended, wished him goodnight with a smile, and went to start her watch and that was it.
Maybe he'd lost the privilege to know her heart.
He told himself that he would be fine with that. Obviously, he would be. He didn't care about any of these people outside of the protection they offered him. And he was fine with that: better yet, that's what he wanted from these assorted freaks. That was his goal from the start.
