“If you want me to feel sorry for doing it....it won’t happen.” - said Robert confidently, and Aaron didn’t see him being confident ever since Kev left his flat. The last time he saw Robert this determined, he was telling Kev that he would always choose Aaron. And even though it made his heart melt, he was supposed to be mad at him. He risked his life to go against a psycho!
“Robert…”
“No, look.... I didn’t even know I was gonna do it, alright? I just did. It wasn’t a choice. It was instinct.” - he shrugged. And how could Aaron be mad at him when he says things like that?

After Kev's gone from the flat, Aaron takes Robert to the hospital. When they come back, Robert doesn't want to go to the flat; he wants to stay at Vic's. After settling there, they talk about what happened, and when later on, Robert has a terrible nightmare, Aaron comforts him. -

"You didn’t say much about your first year, before you were moved back to Hotten.” Aaron tries to sound casual, Robert can tell, but he also knows him well enough to hear the hesitation, the carefulness, the strains underneath it.
He could give an answer, something safe. Something half-truthful. He could say it was for a change of scenery, that it was just a routine transfer, like it meant nothing at all. He’s told that lie so many times- to Kev and to Vic and to anyone in Hotten that bothered asking- he even convinced himself of it a few times. But he knows Aaron would see right through it.

“You’re pathetic mate!”
I shouldn’t be surprised because everyone in my life has tried to tear me down in some form. I was everyone’s favorite pushing bag. But I never expected it from him or maybe I just wanted to ignore the signs. I set up this image of the perfect villain, the best fall guy and there is nothing that people want more than someone they could blame. Someone that would make them feel like they were better than they truly were to feel like a good person.
As I watched the love of my life walk away I wondered if there was more to my life than being the villain to everyone’s story. I just wanted to be happy but I guess I was too desperate for it. A part of me was angry at the younger man, it screamed that no matter how much I berated and tried to hurt him, I never did it in public. I never humiliated him so publicly that even the people that hated him winced in pity. At that moment I didn’t want a reconciliation, I just wished that I could forget everything and everyone, especially him.
“Please someone, anyone, throw this feeling that drives me crazy into the fire, let it all burn to ashes and take away this crushing pain. Please lend me a hand because I want to forget.”

“I... I came to find you. Vic didn't know where you were, no one knew where you were, and neither you nor Kev showed up for the renewal. I told Vic you might still be here and that I'll come check on you, but… What happened? Who did this to you?”
The last part doesn't really sound like a question, it's said as if Aaron knows the answer already, and he probably does.
Robert squeezes his eyes shut. “Told ‘im I couldn't go through with it.”
“Kev?” There's a dangerous edge creeping into Aaron's voice. “Kev did this to you?”

Summary
Robert’s breathing gets worse before it gets better- shallow and erratic, like his body can’t decide if it’s trying to fight or run or shut down completely.
Aaron doesn't dare move closer, but he keeps his hands visible. Makes sure Robert sees all of him. He keeps talking to Robert, voice soft and steady, like he's talking someone down from a ledge- because in some ways, he is.

Aaron and Robert are together, and Kev is out of the picture, but his affect on Robert isn't.
Prison in general and Kev in particular have left a heavy mark on Robert, heavier than he allowed himself to admit. Good thing Aaron is with him, every step of the way.

Robert’s not convinced he even has a set direction in mind, until he's practically falling into a seated position at the bus stop and letting his trembling fingers trace the intricate carved loops of Liv's name on the memorial plaque that's on the bench there.
He presses his thumb into the engraving until there's a red indentation left behind on his skin, but it doesn't hurt as much as he wishes it would.

Robert twitches- legs kicking beneath the blanket like he’s trying to outrun something. His breathing stutters. A sharp sound escapes him, half-swallowed, like he doesn’t know whether he’s allowed to make noise even here.
Aaron just wants to take all the sharp edges and smooth them out, build a world where Robert doesn’t have to fight to get a good night sleep.
