Volo is pleasant, nice and cheerful. Volo is lying. Volo does not fear pokemon, he seems to adore and Revere them and that is the only thing he hasn't lied about. Volo is covered in half truths, lies of omission and he is wearing a perfect mask, he is the perfect merchant, he is friendly and easy to approach and easy to talk to. It is undoubtedly a facade.
Kouji wants to break it. He wants to shatter that perfect, unscathed mask and bite it off his face. And Volo would bleed because his mask was glued to his face and it would definitely hurt when Kouji inevitably tears it off.
Instead, he smiles pleasantly at Volo. He is playing a lying game, so Kouji will play with him. Playing alone is lonely, after all.

Even Ingo will be fine,” The girl whispered, all rosy-cheeked and bright optimism, looking more like the child she actually was now even when delivering the horrible twist of another man’s fate. She gave a last, gentle squeeze of their intertwined hands, and the sudden pinch taking over Morty’s own heart signaled the end of their stolen moment. Her playful grin was one of the last things he saw before the edges of his vision started to blur, “But the question is… Will everything be okay in your reality, Mr. Morty?”
Or: what should be a regular pre-match meeting started in a disaster when Morty shook hands with Irida, triggering a vision unlike anything he ever seen. Morty soon learned that what mattered was not the contents of the prophecy, but how the humans act on it instead.

Summary
The end of Hisui does not come quickly, for the Wardens of Hisui the end it’s a slow and agonizing process, one they are unable to stop despite their best efforts. And as the passage of time defeats them and makes the world of Hisui fade away, eventually, the region and its people are doomed to be remembered just in history books.
But the Almighty was not satisfied by that ending.
When Arceus sent a champion to the past, made them experience all they could about Hisui and then returned them to the present, he had been convinced it would be enough to start the resurrection of the ancient region, but he had been wrong, and if he didn’t wish for his whole plan to fail then he would need to take some drastic measures.
Many years after the last of the Wardens died, all of them suddenly wake up again in modern Sinnoh, a land very different to the one they once knew, and with challenges they never imagined facing, but luckily they are not alone in this, and perhaps now they will finally be able to save the spirit of Hisui.
