Wilson was doing fine. Sure, he was lonely, but he had always been sort of lonely. Being alone in the Constant wasn't that different from being alone back home- though with the added "bonus" of having to constantly fight to survive. But when Maxwell Carter, the fallen king responsible for Wilson's misfortune, stumbles into his camp, Wilson has to face the man he harboured so much hatred for. When he thinks he's finally settled into an odd routine with this disgraced magician, other survivors get added to the equation, throwing a wrench into their daily lives. Forming bonds with these other trapped souls, Wilson must grapple with his deep resentment of Maxwell and the strange new feelings blossoming in the back of his mind.

This thought, along with many others, plagued Wendy Carter's mind after the passing of her dear sister, Abigail. What does she do with herself now? Was her sister still out there? Why wasn't she responding to her various rituals and methods of communication?
Perhaps most importantly, why, after experiencing a particularly vivid dream one night, did she wake up to find her sister in her own bed like nothing had ever happened?
Overjoyed at her sister's return, Wendy now has a new purpose: figure out why she can suddenly see Abigail, help her with her newfound ghostly abilities, and find out why it is that a shadowy corruption seems to be threatening to twist her sister-and even Wendy herself-into something unlike the living world has ever seen.

And that terrified her.
Shouldn’t that mean she ought to keep her distance? If he kept making her think of Abigail, wouldn’t it be easier to mourn if he weren’t around? If she didn’t have a constant reminder of what she lost? But she didn’t feel sad next to Webber. In fact… she felt the opposite. He distracted her. Made her feel like a child again, like she wasn’t trapped in a world that felt too big, too cruel. When he talked to her, when he laughed, it was easier to forget – if only for a little while.
Maybe, with him around, she could pretend she was just an ordinary kid again.
