1976: There's a new girl at Hogwarts. She's perfect. She's beautiful. She has curves in all the right places. Everyone loves her. Everyone except Madeleine and Maggie, that is. With much enlightening commentary about how NOT to write fanfic.
[This was NOT written in response to My Immortal, which I was not specifically aware of at the time of writing, but in response to tropes and problems that were common to a lot of HP fanfic in the mid 2000s.]

Why Do Non-Canon Ships Become So Popular? (And Why Should Writers Rethink When They Do?) by sarehptar
Fandoms: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron: Legendary Defender, 僕のヒーローアカデミア | Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia
27 Dec 2018
Tags
Summary
A vaguely academic examination of the phenomena behind fandom shipping and why certain non-canon ships become exceedingly popular, far overshadowing the popularity of canon ships. This essay touches on common mistakes writers make with female characters and romantic subplots, and suggests a explanation for the enduring popularity of so many m/m ships which have no chance at all of becoming canon. Examples are drawn from Avatar the Last Air Bender, Voltron Legendary Defender (god help me), and My Hero Academia.

You be the judge of whether or not my words are helpful to you, in any way at all. | This is from my point of view, from the many years of both reading and writing stories.
If it helps, then, I'm glad I could be of service! (^-^)
If not, then, feel free to find one of the other stories out there, that hands out advice on the subject.[Ironically this is a Non-Fiction story to help Authors who are writing Fan-Fiction. Lmao]

I’m interested in offering general advice you can apply to whatever you’re writing.
My focus in this guide is twofold:
1) to show you how to puzzle your way through story and character construction by asking yourself useful questions and
2) to push you to explore ideas you might not explore normally and to generate new content for your existing stories.More than anything, I decided to put this guide together because it’s advice I could have used when I was a baby fic writer. I know a bit more now than I did then. Hopefully it’s helpful to you too!

I've been thinking a lot recently about how many people I know don't feel confident in their writing. And thinking about how their insecurities mirror my own in terms of art. So this is my "words of wisdom".
This is less about how to make your writing better directly and more about possibly helping anyone who reads it get rid of some of the roadblocks so that you can experiment and improve yourself in the ways that work best for you. I'll divide it up into chapters so you can pick and choose if you want or read it all the way through. More might be added later. I dunno

I'm lorehouse.
For years, I've written and I've wanted to write. Unfortunately, most of that took place in my imagination and not in practical experience. (Apparently, those are two separate hobbies.) This is my personal internet writer's diary cataloguing my thoughts and experiences as I progress toward my goals and improve. (Or, my last post if I suck and never write again; to be continued!)
I'm too neurodivergent to maintain a blog or a twitter, but just ND enough to occasionally asdfghhjkl plain text while it's in front of me. Hence this book. What am I dumping here? "Show your work" they say. (Okay, Austin Kleon, I'm trusting you with my self-worth here.)
Do you suck? Me too! This is so I can look back on my journey as a writer when (see: if) I eventually improve. Relatively, of course.
I see y'all out here publishing "Wet For Nessie" so I have my chance in hell."I hate writing" my mom said. "Thanks for the support, mom" I replied. But she had to write on a typewriter. That must have sucked. I get it.
I just hope I can effectively incorporate my personal trauma into my writing in a way that is both satisfying and convincing.(Sent from LG Smart Refrigerator)

Do you think angels moult their feathers? Just imagine one of the other Archangels popping into Michael's office and seeing feathers everywhere because she's moulting. - Anonymous
I actually do think angels moult their feathers, but it’s probably on a continuous basis, as well as a seasonal big moult, like birds have. With that said, though, I don’t know how often that season would be - most actual birds moult once a year or more, but I imagine angels would be a bit different.
So like, when you have your feathers on wings, what’s happening is that they’re constantly wearing out and being replaced, just like hair is - new feathers grow in the place of the old ones, and one of the big centres for wing grooming is in removing feathers that are old or dirty or that have gotten bent and letting the new ones grow in. [...] - patricianandclerk
- Moulting, Energy Requirements and When it occurs: Breeding Season l Sex potentially triggering moulding
- Preening and Preen Oil: Oil uses for general wing care, "For some [birds the preen oil] contains pheromones, so for mating and courtship reasons" and 'make up/wing colour brighteners' via coloured oil.

Much of this comes from personal experience, and it's not intended to be encouragement to smoke. Rated Teen and Up for swearing and talk of underage smoking.
