Jayce didn’t expect anything to change that day. He’d gone scavenging like usual, looking for scrap parts to replace a broken capacitor module—when he saw someone already knee-deep in the garbage.
A boy.
Small, looking to be thirteen, maybe fifteen at most. Malnourished, with messy brown hair that clung to his forehead in clumps, matted with sweat and dirt. He walked with a heavy limp, leaning hard on a cane that looked like it had been scavenged too. His clothes were two sizes too big and patched in more places than not. But what caught Jayce off guard were his eyes.
Golden. Unnaturally bright. Sharp as a cut gem and full of thought. Eyes that studied everything like it had a hidden layer waiting to be taken apart and understood.
A single mole sat beneath one eye and another near the corner of his mouth—small, unassuming marks that somehow made him look even more otherworldly.
He was the most beautiful being Jayce had ever seen.

Summary
His son didn’t look convinced, and it bothered Jayce to no end to know that Viktor didn’t believe he could protect them from this, just like he had protected them from everything else. Jayce had rescued him from those awful orphanages and given him a place to work and sleep. Stayed up until the early hours of the morning scribbling down blueprints for Viktor’s projects while the boy slept in his lap. Had bought as many toys for Viktor as he could just so he could relive a childhood he never got to experience and let go of all his inhibitions for a while. Jayce had taken Viktor’s virginity when his son had begun displaying deviant tendencies so that he wouldn’t end up getting hurt by some overenthusiastic jerk. Of course he would be able to handle any stupid rumour that Trowler decided to start—if it ever came to it.
OR
Jayce plays it a little too risky and gets caught. He has to remind Viktor of the lengths he's willing to go to.

So there they are, a shopkeep and a curious stranger, losing daylight in silence. The man studies Jayce’s work while Jayce studies him, and isn’t curiosity just one hell of a thing? It can motivate a topside scientist to brave the gray, and it can bully out years of ingrained wariness to make room for itself.
The man moves again, the necessary three steps left to reach a workbench of works-in-progress. The metalwork of it is rough, all hinges and mechanisms wrought from steel scrap. The beginning of a knee joint, sitting next to the first prototype of Jayce’s own leg brace.
The man’s gaze lingers there, intent and molten in the dimming afternoon light. Then he’s reaching out, reaching forward, his careful fingers tracing along welding seams and scratches in the metal, and Jayce’s curiosity flash-boils.

He let out a sigh and looked up the edge of the rocks.
And then he saw what he was least expecting.
There was a baby! Not just a kid. A very tiny child! Tiny children couldn’t get to these parts of the dike, not with all the sharp edges and all the climbing. the child was staring at him. Plump and round little cheeks and big honey colored eyes, he was chewing his tiny fingers into his mouth, he was nervous that much was obvious. Dark Olive skin a bit damp, clothes, just a tattered white tonik, barefoot, and little turf of brown hair atop the baby's head going into wild directions.
Then the tiny baby said “hi“
Viktor thought 'it can TALK' but said out loud “hello!”
The little baby took his hands away from his mouth and smiled a big smile.
Oh gods.
Ps. Little viktor meets baby jayce, and they become friends and make lots and lots of toys together, and its all good and nothing bad happens to them. for sure.

Summary

Viktor stops abruptly mid-sentence. It’s probably because Jayce has leaned forward to rest his head against Viktor’s collarbone, jutting out prominently under the thin black undersuit. Jayce closes his eyes and sighs contentedly, nuzzling closer.
“Fuck, I wish I had a camera right now,” Vi says, clearly trying to stifle a laugh. “Thanks, doc. I’ll get out of your hair before Jayce says or does something even more embarrassing. Stop him if he tries to bleach his hair, yeah? He was really fixated on that earlier.”
“Thank you, Vi,” Viktor replies in a strangled tone.
Jayce is a pit fighter. Viktor is the Machine Herald. That makes them both sound a lot cooler than they actually are.
