Summary
After a particularly nasty spat with their parents, young elven prince, Reilendir Tetsfeld of Nilukri, turns their back on the comforts of their royal home life in favor of taking up the lifestyle of a wandering adventurer. Shortly thereafter, they meet a mysterious maiden belonging to a secretive religious order and the two begin to fall in love. There are considerable consequences that bring tensions which have been simmering unceremoniously for hundreds of years to a decisive boil.

Mermin, first of all, is extremely old, now obsolete terminology for creatures currently called merfolk (inclusive of mermaids and mermen).
It is specifically used for the half fish, half human looking creature that uses their singing as bait.On this coast, the term has survived the years.
It is, in fact, still used by the paranoid people of Hermit Harbour to refer to this specific myth of theirs.
Although they never as much utter a word about the beings, it is the most notable myth in town.

Years later, Kei Uzuki—now known as Slur/X—has become a cold, vengeful assassin. After massacring the JAA assassins/staffs who wronged him, he’s haunted by memories of Rion. While wandering the city, he saves two stray white cats — one injured, one young — and feels Rion’s presence through them. Her old words echo: that white cats appear to souls they trust. Helping the cats stirs something long buried within him: compassion and warmth. He brings them to safety, tending to them as if fulfilling a promise he once made to her.
