This is a RWBY fic that's been on my mind since I first saw it in 2017-2018, and I finally found it again. And holy shit.
So, obviously a lot of this has so heavily diverged from canon beyond the initial canon divergence of the premise, since this was conceptualised pre-Volume 5. But holy shit do I love this take on RWBY, even though it's bleak as fuck. Ruby and Neo are very very very fucked up, and by all logic this relationship should be at the point where I want it to break down completely and I want them to never interact with each other again, but shockingly, I kind of love it? This is all written so well, and I just, I buy it. And the morality of it all is a constant theme throughout the story.
The fic really is so, so fucked up, though. Not a single person is left unscathed here, and while it doesn't ever truly fall into the realm of Too Bleak, Stopped Caring, it does kind of skirt the line at points. Weiss put it best herself:
"Look at her! That is what happens when someone figures this stupid secret out! Ruby practically went insane, Blake stopped eating and sleeping for a week, and now the single most composed person at Beacon is in the middle of a complete breakdown over it! Do you want that?"
Still, whenever it just barely starts toeing over the line, it consistently pulls itself back in a way that's honestly immensely well done. I just really, really love this fic, and hope that one day I'll get to see the end.
