Summary
Few soulmates are separated at birth by too much time – but when the distance becomes greater than one year all bets are off, with five years’ difference being equally as unusual as fifty.
Yet the one rule that has never been broken is that the soulmates’ lifespans always overlap.
So it came as something of a shock to the young boy in an orphanage in Brooklyn, New York, when his soul mark came in at the age of twelve and told him that his soulmate had been dead for almost sixty years.

It’s been two days now. He knows it would be logical to get out of the city, but he’s waiting for something. Against everything he knows about hiding, he went to the exhibit on Captain America at the Smithsonian and looked at a photo of a stranger who might have been his twin from seventy years ago. He’s not sure what he wanted. An epiphany of some kind, a feeling of doors opening and light flooding in; whatever it was, it never came.

Steve is staring him down, not fiercely, but resolutely, with the confidence of someone who knows he’s right. And something about this is so familiar—not these exact circumstances, but the feeling of arguing with Steve—that Bucky almost agrees. But one little wisp of memory’s not enough. He’s got a point to make. He has to put up more of a fight.
“It’s a bad idea,” he says. He opens his mouth to say all his reasons, because it is a bad idea, in fact it’s a goddamn terrible idea, and they’re both going to regret it, but nothing comes out.
“Please,” Steve says.
Bucky closes his eyes and caves with a sigh. “Fine.” When he opens his eyes again, Steve is clearly trying not to smile. Yeah, that feels familiar. Not so much the feeling of having an argument with Steve, but the feeling of losing an argument with Steve. “Did I ever win an argument with you?”
“Now that you mention it,” Steve says, “I can’t recall that ever happening, no.”

The world had washed in gray when Cassie and Vision died. Not all at once, or fast enough that he noticed right away, but the color leeched out from around the edges first until it had always been that way. It hurt to breathe. The ache lodged in the middle of his chest. If they cut him open they would see it, a physical thing, a bowling ball of bile and doubt and unshed tears.

Tony’s brow is furrowed, confused and thoughtful, probably trying to work out how anybody could not be sexually attracted to him. Steve’s almost certainly never even heard the word, looking back at Clint in sheer bafflement. Bruce looks weirdly upset, almost horrified, and Clint’s stomach just turns cold at that, because Bruce of all people won’t get this, he’s overcome the Hulk to have sex with the others and won’t see why Clint can’t do the same.
And Natasha…
Natasha’s face is bloodless and her hand’s flown to her lips. She shoves back from the table, almost knocking her chair over, and practically runs from the room.

Somewhere in the SHIELD archives, which eventually got released to the public, much to the amusement and joy of everyone who ever said "I SHIPPED IT!!!!!" is a List.
The List was compiled by the long-suffering Colonel Phillips, who should have been more thankful that Steven Grant Rogers was the lone Super Soldier from Erskine's Project Rebirth. Add in Sgt. Bucky Barnes and the Howling Commandos and it was a sheer miracle that Phillips managed to make it through the war with his sanity relatively intact. Mostly. Sort of.
He's still not going to accept a teddy bear as a Corporal in his own regiment. God damn it!

I’m looking for a punk - 6 foot 2, eyes of blue, blonde hair, ridiculous jawline, has a tendency to hide the fact that he’s walking wounded - physically and mentally - and an especially aggravating tendency to give me a heart attack.
It’s a goddamn miracle I haven’t gotten any gray hairs yet. Or maybe it’s this fucking bastard Zola serum.Occasionally, he is five foot odd NOT ADORABLE IN THE GODDAMN LEAST, skinny and STILL LIVES TO GIVE ME A HEART ATTACK.I would appreciate it very much if any of you can point me in his general direction as he and I have a long overdue discussion about the general wisdom of jumping out of elevators from hundred-story buildings, jumping off helicarriers and trusting to equally nutty friends with fucking wings to catch him, suicidal plane crashings in the Arctic Circle and basically everything to do with a general lack of fucking. self. preservation.
So yeah, please let me know if you’ve seen Steven Grant Rogers.
I’m going to kick his ass and then kiss the life outta him. Thanks,

Because Bucky seems to have forgotten that when he said, "Don’t you leave me. Don’t you goddamn leave me, Steve Rogers. You fight this, punk. You fight this, and live through it, or I’m gonna come after you to the other side, swear to God," steve had to have been awake to take his hand and whisper, "Yes."
Which means Steve remembers.

With that sense of urgency Bob didn't really have a choice in the matter. Wade had already taken up one of the boxes and was booking it for the door, and Bob was struggling to keep up. Upper body strength wasn't really his forte, so he was having a rough time there, but his HYDRA training had prepared him to run in almost any scenario, so that part he had down. Still, by the time he had gotten the first box to the rather sparse house next door, Wade had already gotten three inside.
For the next fifteen minutes, neither of them said anything as they rushed back and forth. Eventually, the only thing left in Ellie's room was her furniture and her clothes that had been hanging in the closet.

“What about you, Barnes?” asks Dugan. The sound of his voice brings Bucky back to the present, dredges him out of memories of a beat-up little apartment with sunlight streaming in through the windows. “Got yourself a girl waiting for you back home?”
There’s an answer on the tip of his tongue, one that he’ll deliver with a cocky grin and a half-laugh and a little shake of his head. But Bucky is exhausted and hungry and so sore it hurts to move, and one of the guys in their platoon fucking died yesterday. His mouth tastes like iodine water and his feet hurt and none of it’s going to get better any time soon, and all at once Bucky misses Steve so badly he can barely see straight.
“Yeah,” Bucky declares abruptly, the word escaping from his mouth before he fully realizes what he’s saying. “Yeah, I do.”
[This fic presents a self-contained story that can easily be read on its own. If desired, however, it can also be read as a prequel to "Reconstruction Site" and "Amidst the Rubble". It takes place chronologically first but was written third.]Series

“Hey!” Bucky shouts at the assembled crowd of soldiers milling around them. He does it to get the soldiers’ attention – doesn’t do it to break up the moment between Steve and this dame of his because that would be awful. That would be insane. “Let’s hear it for Captain America!” he calls out once he’s got everyone’s attention, and they all start clapping and cheering in a way that Steve deserves, he does, in a way he’s always deserved.

Storge, philia, eros, agape. Brotherly love, the love between friends, romantic love, unconditional love. Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes' story often a gradual progression through all four, in many dimensions and many universes. We tell each other these stories, uncover these tales, share our own canons, because at the heart of all things it is always love that brings us all together. It's why we're here. Everybody loves a good love story.

"Do you remember Gina Hernandez?"
The shift has Steve flailing for a moment, the only thing bouncing around in his head, I love you, over and over, but at length he recalls curly black hair, oversized glasses. "You kept trying to ask her out all summer," Steve says, frowning through his confusion.
"She liked you," Bucky says. "I thought if I took her out, she wouldn't ask you."
Steve stares at him. They had been twelve years old.

"Bucky?" a voice says, soft and tentative and a little wavery, and when he turns around, he gapes in awe and not a little fear."S-Stevie?" he manages, and it's Steve, of course it's Steve, that's Steve's voice and Steve's eyes and Steve's big beak and Steve's stupid ears but... but... whose square jaw is that, and where did those shoulders come from, and how did he get so tall?
"Bucky, how - how did you - ?"

The asset is not having an optimal day.
“Our cycles are syncing,” his mission says from the other side of the exam room, quiet and apologetic. He’s standing against the wall and the asset is sitting on an exam table. They’re in . . . a tower. The asset isn’t sure why. He doesn’t feel right, overheated and over-energized, and isn’t sure about that either.
“So you’re--my alpha, then,” he says haltingly, eyes flicking up to his mission’s face. Not his mission anymore. But always his mission, he thinks.
“Other way around,” his mission answers with a smile that all of the asset’s training can’t decipher the full meaning behind. It looks injured, and . . . and things the asset doesn’t know.

"I don’t like splitting up,” Steve blurts out, yanking Bucky inside. Then he winces at how he must sound.
Bucky doesn’t react, just starts pulling things out of his bag. "I got us phones,” he says. He slices through a plastic-wrapped package and tosses Steve something small. Steve flips it open and looks curiously at the tiny screen.
"If we get separated,” Bucky says. "Here. This is my number.”
