The water closed over him, cool and welcoming, and for a moment, it felt like he could breathe again. He kicked harder, faster, pushing his body beyond its limits. His arms burned, his lungs screamed, but he didn’t stop. If he swam fast enough, maybe the thoughts would stop chasing him. Maybe the water would erase them.
His body slowed, but his mind screamed at him to keep going. His breath grew shallow, his vision blurred, but still, he didn’t stop.
