They didn't immediately open fire, which was nice. Jason had been prepared for that possibility, but getting shot was better than starving or freezing to death.
"State your name and business."
The pack alpha was even bigger up close, a wall of muscle silhouetted against the fire, and for a moment Jason cursed himself for spending so long fighting with himself. This would have been much easier in the daylight.
He let out a wheeze, trying to apologize, then tipped his chin up in a sign of submission. The atmosphere shifted, and he saw the dark-haired girl lower her rifle out of the corner of his eye.
"No way…"

“D—dad?” came the weak, hoarse rasp, accompanied by more coughing. Dick slid a further step back as the brother and sister joined them. A tearful family reunion.
He was never going to get to see his family again.
Dick didn’t know when his knees gave out, he just knew that between one blink and the next, everyone looked much taller. He couldn’t ground himself in the earth, he felt like he was floating, the world churning around him.
Everything was blurry again. His cheeks were wet, and he couldn’t lift either of his hands—one screamed at the very thought, and the other was stained with blood. He pressed the bloody one to the ground, head bowed, like he already had a collar around his neck.
