The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”

Dream shrugs.
“Couple of years,” he answers vaguely.
He doesn’t know what she could possibly use that kind of information for, but he’s not willing to give her an extensive answer anyway. Better safe than sorry.
“Lots of people here?”
“A good bit.”
“Do you have kids?” she asks. “I can’t imagine a parent with young children during times like these.”
“None of my own. But I’ve seen plenty of kids come through who were abandoned,” he answers shortly.
“That’s terrible.”
“It is,” he agrees. “But sometimes the best you can do right now is look after yourself. If I hadn’t kept myself alive in the beginning, I never would’ve made it here to help these people.”
“I suppose that’s fair,” she gives.-
Dream's compound has been a safe place for five years. He's worked hard to make it that way. People come and they go, and sometimes they stay. This story revolves around the ones that stay.
