“Is all thanks to you that we made it. It’s like I said before! You make a good leader!”
He blinks a few times, unable to fully process the other’s words. They sound too honest, poured before Jean like some kind of sacrifice— and he takes them to heart despite not believing any of them, a small grin forming on his face.
“I'm not so sure about that” he tells the other, brushing the words off. The praise felt both good and undeserving, making it impossible to properly look at the other. Red flashed before his eyes, the big X on Marco's chest taunting him ; a contrast to Jean's own blue circle. It was the same color as Floch’s blood earlier, falling from his nose from Jean's slap. The same bright shade as the blood they had to walk over from the previous players, the grim reminder of the ones that didn't make it.
For a split moment his eyes close, trying to push the thought away. His gaze moves away from Marco, watching Sasha and Connie once again. She was laughing, the sound loud and unapologetic. Connie was pouting for some reason, looking like a scolded child.
‘Only one more game’ he thinks while watching them, instantly feeling guilty over it.
‘Just one more game. Then we’ll all go home’

In that moment Izuku thought of his mother, her screams echoing in the small apartment while watching the news. He thought of aunt Mitsuki and uncle Masaru, how they might not even know about Kacchan's situation. Of All Might looking him straight in the eyes, showing him the ugly truth of the world they were living in.
"I'm gonna be the number one hero"
And without any other hesitation he began running.
