Summary
The cashier swiped the items across the scanner. “Will that be all?” They ask, voice monotone and bored, complimenting the already dreariness of the store. Wilbur took a sharp breath, eyes flicking between the cashier and the cigarettes.
As he opened his mouth to say what he always says, yes, thank you, instead comes out, “Can I get a pack of cigarettes?” Wilbur internally cringes at how shaky his voice is, immediate regret following. Yet, he can’t find it in himself to take it back.
The cashier nods, turning around to face the treacherous shelf. “Which kind?”
“Just, um, just some Marlboros.” Wilbur stutters out as if he was some teenager about to get caught, fumbling to pull cash out from his wallet.
Wilbur’s eyes are trained on the white carton as the cashier scans it and places it on the counter next to the bread, milk, and gummy worms. He shouldn’t be doing this, he thinks to himself, he should just tell the cashier to put them back and ring him up for what he originally planned on getting.
But Wilbur can already imagine the smoke filling his lungs, allowing him to relax, oh god did he just want to relax.
