Summary
Charles Cholmondely was a scientist; his purpose in life was to notice what a layperson could not. Big things about small creatures during his previous works became small things about big creatures once within the walls of MI5. But, with no bugs in a quadrat and no prospective corpses on a morgue table, the creatures he was left observing were the colleagues who had become closer than family.
It was Monty who worried him though.

Summary
Screeching metal stopped her in her tracks. The grunt of pain that accompanied the collision was undoubtedly Greaseball’s, she’d recognise it anywhere. Electra’s high-pitched shriek followed. Crashes were normal, Dinah still thought, her priority still with trying to find where Pearl had run away to. Both engines had a reputation for complaining, they’d be fine.
It was only when Momma started shouting that Dinah looked around. Flashbacks of the first final spun through her mind like a horror-scape of rising flames; this wasn’t a normal crash. She had to get Greaseball out of there.

Summary
With the chaos of the crash that had ended the downhill final, Rusty had barely seen Wrench since she’d rescued him the night before. Initially his plan had been to come during the day: to thank her, and perhaps agree a mutual time for him to come back to review her repair work in the daylight. But after overhearing everything that had happened since then, he was equally as concerned about checking she was ok.
Perhaps the storm was over, perhaps they were in the eye of the hurricane. There was no way of knowing until morning.

Summary
There was a world map in Annie and Martha’s office, identical to the one that the gentlemen had in their office where Annie had pitched her column. Only their map had a line drawn across the latitude of Annie’s cycle, real and tangible rather than the glowing trace that Martha had imagined Annie drawing during the meeting.
Martha had studied that map many a time. She stuck pushpins through the parchment to hang newspaper clippings from various locations, circled the cities where she’d stopped for a while. It was all for the purpose of their writing, of course.
Martha wanted to study Annie like that map.

Summary
Annie had never been destined for motherhood; it didn’t take a psychic to know that. Raising babies had never come easy, she became frustrated too quickly, she didn’t have the patience to look after them. Some women would been thrilled at having a large family so young, but not even Annie Cohen Kopchovsky could convince herself she’d be happy that way. Let alone Annie Londonderry.
But she wanted to look after Martha. Gezogt gevorn, Annie wanted to hold her close and look after her for the rest of her life. The feeling was sobering enough that she would have collapsed into a chair had she not already dragged the nearest one into Martha’s room.
