The scent of disintegrating ash on the sharp end of Tanjiro’s sword was almost overwhelming. The smell reminded him of a lightning strike against the dry branches of a dead tree. Tanjiro had cut the demon’s head swiftly—it had barely managed to utter one spell before its head rolled against the wooden floor.
Tanjiro stood over the decaying corpse, squinting at the sight. Kanao’s fingers fluttered near the edges of her cloak; Inosuke teetered off balance.
Zenitsu broke the silence: “Tanjiro.” He didn’t miss the way Genya brought his hands up to cup his ears. “Have demons always smelled this horrible?”
