    Summary

“Don’t think I wanna remember it, bein’ honest,” John said, warming his hands around a hot cup of coffee. Moving around, getting his own coffee in the morning… he hadn’t realized how important that type of independence was until he didn’t have it. “Been meaning to thank you, though. For ridin’ out in that storm and risking your neck.”

Javier shook his head, waving him off. “Don’t worry about it. Like I said to Arthur, you would’ve done the same for me.” He gestured vaguely in the direction of John’s face. “I just wish we could’ve gotten to you before… all that.”

John reached up subconsciously, touching the black patch he wore where his right eye used to be. It was a step up from having gauze wrapped around his head, but it was still a foreign feeling, having something on his face all the time. “Yeah. Me too.”

(AKA the one where John lost an eye to the wolves and can't pull his weight around camp the way he once did. Arthur notices. Things get bad.)

    Summary

The wind drops, suddenly, and the swirls of billowing snow settle between them slowly. Arthur squints as the figure becomes more defined, familiar but… not.

    Wrong.

John Marston stands at the top of the crest of the mountain covered in snow and blood. There’s a dead wolf pelt with the head still attached wrapped around his neck and shoulders and he drags two more by the tail behind him. Four violent gashes cut through his cheek and up over his nose.

It’s hard to tell how much of the blood is his and how much is from the wolves.

“The hell, Marston?! You kill those with your bare hands?” Javier demands, looking shocked.

John makes a face that might be intended to be a grin but it’s all teeth. It makes the cuts on his face weep and Arthur feels himself wince in sympathy. Those must be painful.

    “I had a knife.”

    Or

John closes his eyes on Beechers Hope and opens them to teeth at his throat.

    Summary

    Second epilogue added

Arthur Morgan followed his own advice and left the gang when he had a child (the canonical Eliza and Isaac), taking up as a bounty hunter. Along the way he picked up a young John Marston, who thus never runs with Dutch. Despite leaving, Arthur never truly left his connections behind him, and when Dutch asked for help, he always answered. In 1899, during the event of the game, this arrangement might eventually force Arthur to choose to whom he truly owes his loyalty.

John sneered. "You think I'd protect Dutch Van der Linde? Believe me, if I knew where he was, I'd tell you. Hell, I'd go get him myself. He's worth 10 large right now."

Milton sneered right back. "I am not a fool, Mister Marston, kindly do not treat me as one. You would do nothing without Arthur Morgan's say-so, and that will be what puts you on the gallows right beside him."
