Rook could always see and hear spirits. She knew there were others that did, too, but they were often sent to the Nevarra to become Mourn Watchers or Tevinter to work with demons and blood magic. She didn’t like either of those options, so she kept her yap shut.
So when she was sent to rescue the Demon of Vyrantium, she ignored the fact that she could see his demon’s corporeal form. But as time went on, it got progressively harder not to react, especially when he ramped up on harassing Lucanis when Rook was around, listing all the filthy things that Spite thought he should be doing to her.
