“Maybe I want to taste your heart,” I said, staring into his darkening eyes with intent, “as you pull out your knives and punish the wicked with everything that's forged you into a master assassin. Maybe I want to see what it is that you're so afraid of that you wrap your kindness behind black leather and the impression of knives—and you hide your cruelty deeper than that.”
Rook de Riva wants to prove themselves, or maybe just survive. Lucanis Dellamorte wants to do a favour for Viago by keeping Rook alive. Something in the Fade takes a special interest in Lucanis.
All the two Crows need to do is kill a target, stop a Magister from becoming a god, and not get eaten on the way. They'll both need to face their inner demons if they want to make it home alive, let alone intact.
(Lucanis would really love to be devoured.)

Lucanis is just about to close up the shop when Rook stumbles onto the rooftop patio, tripping over the extended strap of her scribe’s purse. The bag tears open, sending Rook to the ground in a clatter of pens and broken ink vials. As another customer rises from her seat—in her usual shadowed corner, where she often stays until Lucanis kicks her out for the night—he drops his towel on the table so he can run to Rook’s side.
“I’m sorry,” she says, helplessly, tears streaming from her cheeks as she looks up at him. “I didn’t want to get you involved in this. I just… didn’t know where else to go.” On her hands and knees, palms bleeding and ink-stained from where they’ve skidded across the broken glass, she smells like saltwater and sweat and something else, bittersweet. She’s breathing hard as his thumb hovers over her cheekbone, and her pupils are too wide, visible even in the dim light of the candles placed in intervals along the trellis that surrounds his little haven. His breath catches as she leans fully into him, one of her stained hands rising to clutch the fabric of his cheap linen shirt.

It's true that most of the Lighthouse's residents have trouble sleeping. But in the midnight sun of their sanctuary's magical kitchens, it's three bodies in particular that seem to gravitate toward late night coffee as black as their souls.

Lucanis started flirting with Neve because it was less intimidating than the alternative.
Their personas fit. The infamous Mage-killing assassin stalking the shadows for blood and the famous Mage-detective stalking the corrupt streets for clues were well-worn sets of clothing. The hint of danger was to be expected, for them, but it was also easy. When it came to Neve Gallus, he could be the person he was supposed to be, and she let him. Mostly.
Rook turned all of his expectations upside down.
It would have been easy to avoid Rook and let the easy words and suggestive looks with Neve carry him through the rest of his contract. It was an annoyance that his traitorous heart had to beat in tune with both of theirs.
It was terrifying that neither mage had enough self-preservation to stay away from Spite.

With Omri de Riva away in Nevarra with the girls, Neve gets to know this supposed Demon of Vyrantium better, and she can’t help but notice the overlapping profiles amongst this strange, mysterious faction.
Good cooks. Reluctant to accept help. Gentlemanly. And entirely too charming.
