“Relax,” I said, halting my approach scarcely two feet away from him, like I wasn’t afraid of anything and definitely hadn’t noticed at least three hidden knives on his person. “I’m capable of spotting interest or the lack of it as well as any Crow. I’m not trying to seduce you.”
He looked me directly in the eyes, and my training called for an instinctive loosening of the shoulders. His eyes narrowed. “Really,” he said, his voice flat, “because I’m capable of the same. And I can tell when people are afraid of me.”
Secret identities. Demons. A few short weeks to stop a slaughter in Minrathous—and fulfill a contract that was supposed to be a suicide mission.
Or, the gothic horror of the Antivan countryside meets the detective noir of Minrathous. In spite of it all, this is a love story. (Pre-canon.)

Lucanis is just about to close up the shop when Rook stumbles onto the rooftop patio, tripping over the extended strap of her scribe’s purse. The bag tears open, sending Rook to the ground in a clatter of pens and broken ink vials. As another customer rises from her seat—in her usual shadowed corner, where she often stays until Lucanis kicks her out for the night—he drops his towel on the table so he can run to Rook’s side.
“I’m sorry,” she says, helplessly, tears streaming from her cheeks as she looks up at him. “I didn’t want to get you involved in this. I just… didn’t know where else to go.” On her hands and knees, palms bleeding and ink-stained from where they’ve skidded across the broken glass, she smells like saltwater and sweat and something else, bittersweet. She’s breathing hard as his thumb hovers over her cheekbone, and her pupils are too wide, visible even in the dim light of the candles placed in intervals along the trellis that surrounds his little haven. His breath catches as she leans fully into him, one of her stained hands rising to clutch the fabric of his cheap linen shirt.

Lucanis started flirting with Neve because it was less intimidating than the alternative.
Their personas fit. The infamous Mage-killing assassin stalking the shadows for blood and the famous Mage-detective stalking the corrupt streets for clues were well-worn sets of clothing. The hint of danger was to be expected, for them, but it was also easy. When it came to Neve Gallus, he could be the person he was supposed to be, and she let him. Mostly.
Rook turned all of his expectations upside down.
It would have been easy to avoid Rook and let the easy words and suggestive looks with Neve carry him through the rest of his contract. It was an annoyance that his traitorous heart had to beat in tune with both of theirs.
It was terrifying that neither mage had enough self-preservation to stay away from Spite.

Summary
They had to be Crows. The dark leather they were clad in nearly melded with the shadows below. It surprised him somewhat that they did not notice his presence—or perhaps they had, and had decided that it was worth it anyway.
A sliver of light illuminated part of the man’s face, and it struck Lorenzo how utterly besotted he looked. He had initially assumed this just to be some sort of drunken tryst, but he found the gravity of the Crow’s expression almost uncomfortable to look at—something a stranger should not bear witness to.
Also, that was one of Caterina Dellamorte’s boys. He was sure of it.

A very good and most marvelously weird look at Spite's growth and "birth" in the Ossuary, "if one could even use the term for the act of violence that had created him" and the terms of his deal with Lucanis.
Excellent Spite POV as he learns how the body (the cage) works and how to communicate with Lucanis. "If the cage made words to capture meaning..."
