Summary
Sanji’s worst nightmare comes true when the Sunny gets lost at sea, with no escape and nothing to eat. It’s his job to feed the crew, his job to save them, but in order to do that he’ll have to face his deepest childhood fear and make a sacrifice. A sacrifice that only Zoro truly understands. The cook and the swordsman will have to save each other before they can save their crew, but that will require them getting much closer than either one of them ever expected.

Summary
Zoro feels so pathetic, so weak and all he can think back to is him getting on his knees in front of Mihawk so he’d never have to feel so weak again. Still, the tears come — a disgusting tidal wave and he buries his face in the collar of Sanji’s shirt to hide from Sanji’s knowing gaze.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do.” Zoro says, so softly that he isn’t even sure if Sanji hears him.
“We’ll figure it out.” Sanji says, running his hand through the tuft of Zoro’s hair. “Don’t we always?”
Zoro wakes up on the day before his birthday. Then it happens again. And again.

It starts, as so many things involving them do, with a taunt, a challenge, and an inescapable, stubborn, childish need to win.
“You wouldn't know a good kiss if it bit you, shit-cook.”
Sanji laughs at that ludicrous statement. “A good kiss wouldn't bite, moron. You're delusional if you think you know more about good kissing than me. Know more about anything, really, I mean, come on.”
Sanji's about to turn away and melt into the crowd, forgetting this interaction entirely, when the shitty swordsman says something he simply cannot ignore.
“Bet?”Sanji and Zoro hook up once, but it's just to prove a point. The second time is to even the score. The third time, well...and the fourth...and fifth...and maybe Sanji has a problem.

“It’s weird, I guess. I didn’t expect to feel so alone once I was back with the crew.”
It’s hard to stay where he is then, wanting badly to cross the few steps required to show Zoro how not alone he is.
“You don’t have to be here, you know. Luffy’s still in the crew quarters like before. Why’d you take the cabin if you feel that way?”
“You’re here, aren’t you?”
Sanji’s throat closes up and he can’t say anything to that. Is Zoro saying he took this room, chose to feel isolated, on the off-chance that Sanji would—
Zoro does what he couldn’t and comes to stand in front of him. “Aren’t you?”
At last, there’s something on the swordsman’s face beyond impassivity or the determination of a fight.
“Yeah,” Sanji’s breathes. “Yes.”

But how could he not try and undo what damage he had seen in Zoro the moment he found him in that cell? How could his soul not have been altered by seeing himself in the reflection of Zoro’s lifeless eyes. Seeing himself in the suffering that he had gone through. How could it not change him to see the hope return into his crewmate’s eyes the moment he recognized HIM. Had looked at him, the stupid, good for nothing ero-cook, as if he was a beacon of light after endless darkness.

What starts out as a routine stop at an unassuming island becomes a night of horror for Zoro and Sanji as Zoro is forced to expose himself in the worst way possible. Sanji, left to pick up the pieces, must now deal with the aftermath and face the fact that his understanding of the swordsman has changed forever.

His head lolled to the side, chasing the warmth of Sanji’s hands. “Cook,” he mumbled. “I… I knew you’d be here.”
Sanji abruptly felt like crying. “Of course, you moron. I told you I wouldn’t leave you, remember?”
“I know, that… that’s what you… you promised.” Glazed over as they were, Zoro’s eyes found Sanji’s earnestly. “You promised ,” he repeated, emotion raw in his voice.
“Yeah,” he breathed, immediately forgetting anyone was watching. Zoro was more important. He was needed , Zoro needed him, and without even thinking, he pressed his lips to Zoro’s forehead in what was quite possibly the most affectionate gesture he’d ever given anyone, including the hoards of lovely ladies he’d seen over the years. He moved down to bump their foreheads together and cradle Zoro’s face in his hands. “I’m here,” he whispered, low enough that only the two of them could hear.

“I think we’ve been apart long enough, don’t you?” Zoro growled, gathering Sanji’s hands between his own and knocking their foreheads. His gray eye was a storm. Fury and despair in tumultuous waves.

The look in the swordsman’s eyes was new, something Sanji would almost label ‘fear’ if he were a more foolish man. The attempt was brief, though, Zoro’s grip loosening, eyes rolling back as that last hit finally dragged him into the dark.
Sanji had almost accepted that would be the last time they saw each other, too.

There’s no mistaking the sound of the cook's voice, but Zoro’s eyes narrow at the unfamiliar tone in it.
His hand is still on Wado.
“No way in hell,” Nami's voice rings out. “He’s not going anywhere, he's spoken for.”
This gives Bege pause, surprise flashing on his face before returning to a practised neutrality.
“Spoken for? As in—”
“As in, you can't have him,” Zoro should have let his Captain speak first, but his mouth opens almost on instinct, speaking over the big man as they join their crewmates.

He looks up at Sanji in surprise.
Sanji takes a small step forward, eyes glued on the swordsman.
“You’re right. It’s not enough,” he takes another step, “not by a long shot.”
And oh, that wasn’t surprise he was seeing, it was hope.
