Lexa stares for a long minute, pained and lost and looking at Clarke as though to love her is as easy as to breathe. “Is it so hard to assume, then,” she starts, voice cracking down the middle. “That I could think the same about you?”
Clarke closes her eyes, opens her mouth, looking for something to say. But the words stick in her throat, clogged with an emotion she can’t name, just knows that it hurts. And that it will swallow her whole if she doesn’t swallow it down first.

She is the dog that bites when a hand extends itself to feed, the dog that is wrong down to its very bones, down to the marrow, down to something genetic and intrinsic and unchangeable, the dog they put down to spare it its own misery.
She wishes it were as simple as a matter of guilt. Guilt for hurting them, for hiding, for lying, because maybe she could’ve fixed that, because guilt, at least, would’ve meant that she’s only done something wrong.
