“I don’t deserve–”
The slap echoed across the arid expanse like a thunderclap. Open palm. Flapping jaw. The resulting silence felt somehow even louder. Vash gingerly reached up to touch his reddening cheek, looking as surprised as Wolfwood felt.
“That more like it, huh? That what you think you fuckin’ deserve?” One hand raked over Vash’s undercut and seized a fistful of his stupid hair, wrenching his head back. Hard. Hard enough that the cry of pain that Vash was biting back slipped free, sharpened by the shock of it. There was something else in his sunny-day gaze, too, something underneath the shame and the sting. It looked a lot like hope. Naked trust. It made him fucking sick.
“You wanna hurt, Blondie?” his whisper held the gravity of forty years spent doling out pain with surgical precision. “‘Cause I can do that for ya.”
Vash's constant martyrdom is really starting to piss Wolfwood off.

Though Meryl could no longer see Vash's face, she could see him taking a moment to give the guy a once‐over as he saw who he was dealing with. To Meryl's surprise, Vash merely stretched his arms behind his head and replied, lazily:
"No, I don't think I will."
