Buck," Eddie says again, voice soft and calm and steady. "Talk to me."
"Never done it like this before," Buck says. "Y'know? Always — always been quick. One moment things're normal, next moment I blink and find out I almost died or, or even did die, but now I'm fine. Never had time to… think about it."
There's noise over the radio; Buck catches Hen's voice, yelling, "Side A's no good. Ravi, tell me you have better news—"
Eddie asks, "What're you thinking about?" and all the noise fades away.

He didn't hang up the gaydar when he joined the seminary, you know. In a parish like his, he still gets plenty of use from it. He sees a lot. Like right now: he sees the shadows of exhaustion on Buck and Eddie's faces, and the way they lean into each other, and how Eddie hasn't taken his hand off of Buck since he was in touching distance. Not once. And Brian sees how, despite the exhaustion and the unhappy occasion - and despite the loss of the really very handsome moustache - something in Eddie's face seems calmer and more settled now than it was five months ago.

Chris rolls his eyes from where he's sitting at the kitchen table, putting minimal effort into tearing up the mozarella. "It's just Buck. You don't have to be so weird about it."
"I'm not being weird," Eddie says, checking his watch for the fifteenth time in five minutes.
It's normal to be excited about seeing your best friend and getting to share some good news with him, isn't it? Nothing weird about looking forward to that. One night with Chris back under his roof felt like a dream after the nightmare came true; all Eddie wants to do apart from talk to his son is talk to Buck about it.

Buck can feel the space the anger is supposed to be, and he closes his eyes, and it goes. He knows. He knows he’s not the kind of person you can tell things, not any more. Ravi says 'oh my god dude there was this totally sick play last night I’ll send you the TikTok' and Eddie says 'how about linguine on Saturday' and Maddie says 'shit I forgot to get cash out I’ll Venmo you' and Buck thinks he’s dead he’s dead he’s dead
He knows that isn’t fair. Same grief taste. Same bleeding mouths.

“What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.”
“You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. Of course he’s in love with Eddie. How could he possibly have let himself pretend otherwise. “Wasn’t expecting this, bud,” says Eddie, and he sounds so shocked that Buck can’t help a wry smile. Of course Eddie’s surprised. They must be the only two people in existence who didn’t already know. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…”
“I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less.
