Summary
Dean’s masters, Michael and Lucifer, have killed each other. It’s not exactly out of character for them, but it means that their omega-pet changes hands with the rest of their property, inherited by their younger brother Castiel, an Alpha who has never wanted a pet and who doesn’t want Dean, either. Problem is, he has to keep him, at least until the investigation into the double murder is closed. Owned by an Alpha who’d much rather get rid of him? Dean doesn’t think it bodes well for him.
A story in which Dean’s expectations get shattered because Castiel turns out to be unlike any Alpha he’s ever met, and in which Castiel figures out that the rules can’t answer every question and sometimes you have to make it up as you go.

The open road is the only place he has ever belonged.
Then there’s Castiel. It was never meant to be a permanent thing, this… whatever it is between them. Dean picks him up on impulse--a hitchhiker along the side of the highway. He doesn’t know where he came from, only that like Dean, he doesn’t know where he’s going. So they drive and before long, Castiel becomes Cas, the best friend Dean’s ever had.
He didn’t anticipate running into Cas’s long-lost kid along the way... Or maybe, that only opens the door to the best part.

Castiel’s neighbors don’t really know him and haven’t tried to, which is just how he needs it to be to stay safe and alive. His new neighbor, though, throws a wrench into his foolproof plan — Dean Winchester, eternally cheerful, trusting, and handsome, wants to know him, wants to be close to him, wants to be more with him. Castiel is afraid… but when he’s with him, he feels safe and alive in a whole new way that seems more important and worthy than simply existing. But for Dean to really know him, he has to know Castiel’s past. Can Castiel open himself up? Will Dean stay once he knows?

Dean's life didn't start out great. With his mom dying and his father taking him and Sam on wild goose chase after wilder goose chase to track down her killer until Sam couldn't take it anymore and ran off, it pretty much sucked. But now he has Cas. And Cas is great--perfect, even--definitely the best thing that's ever happened to him, even if he isn't quite human. He's been living so long in domestic bliss that he completely forgot to be worried about waiting for the other shoe to drop. Which is, of course, when his giant of a brother strolls back into his life sending Dean into a panic that he and Cas will have to uproot their perfect apple pie life if Sam finds out Cas' big secret.
