Summary
Magic connected a caster to the world. Mages who reach for connection, but try to pull that in – to refuse attachments – grew plants. Eventually, the growth would choke them. It was foolish. That didn’t stop the roots from digging deep, the green from flourishing, and the petals from choking his breath ever since the ship.
Essek’s scorpion grass bloomed in tiny, powder blue flowers, and marked him as damned.

Summary
Beau is emergency-called to the Academy because a junior professor of transmutation attempted suicide in his office and they need her to decide what to do with him. He's going to be fine, the healers say, but he either can't or won't explain why he feels this way.
The more Beau digs into her closest friend's lowest moment, the less convinced she is that they have the full story of what happened to Caleb. Maybe she's onto something. Maybe she's fallen down a rabbit hole to avoid confronting her own feelings.
A story about love, fear, holding on, and letting go.

Summary
“You are being gentle with him.”
Essek stills his hand on Frumpkin’s back, arching a questioning eyebrow. Frumpkin looks over his shoulder in indignant protest, but before he can so much as merp, Caleb has scooped him into his lap. The cat’s eyes fall closed with contentment as Caleb takes his face in both hands and rubs his thumbs in firm circles.
“Cats are not so fragile,” he explains. “They like a little bit of-- here.”
And then Caleb reaches out and takes his hand, and Essek is afraid to breathe.
