Goody heads outside, shivers a little with the cold of it and draws his jacket in closer. The noise from the bar dims as the door shuts, and that’s when he sees he’s got company. One of the new guys that showed up tonight. Asian, which is a little unusual, and quiet, which is pretty standard. Most people don’t talk much until they’ve come to a few meetings or unless they’re close to fluent already, and Goody would bet money that this guy was having trouble grasping the basic gist of things. Curious.
Goody digs out a cigarette from his pocket, grins out a hello in the quick flare of the lighter. “Didn’t catch your name in there, sorry—I’m Goody.”

"You almost fell coming up the porch, guerito," a second voice responded, chiding. The low, thick accent of it jarred Goodnight starkly back into the past, immediately revealing the identity of both speakers. "Just give me your hand, idiota terco."
"Damn," Billy muttered with feeling, as he too recognized the strangers. He cut a dark, knowing look at Goodnight, eyes narrowing at the sudden, elated edge to Goodnight's grin.

Billy’s the assassin (with a heart of gold ofc, only goes after actual bad guys, never anyone innocent). Goody’s the one with a gambling problem who has bookies sending hitmen after him after making a string of big bets he can’t pay off.

Goodnight had started reading out loud to Billy a couple of months into their partnership.
Billy bought the book on his own after nearly a year of riding together. It was already pretty worn, the covers lost at some point and the title leaf soiled with dirty thumb marks but it was thick, like a doorstop, promising to last them a good long while. Billy held it in his hands, turning the dog eared pages over and feeling the soft paper with his fingers before taking it to the counter and putting it with the rest of his supplies.
On the smudged title leaf of the first book he has ever bought he can read two words, and underneath that is says “The Whale”.

The night before the battle of Rose Creek, Faraday comes to Vasquez with an offer he doesn't want to refuse. The aftermath is complicated by injuries and recovery, but Vasquez thinks they might have things figured out right up until the morning Faraday is nowhere to be found.
The rest of the seven split into two groups with a promise to meet in Amador City in a few months' time. To everyone's surprise, Faraday shows up as well, drunk but with a lead on a gang of horse thieves.
(In which Vasquez and Faraday compare dick sizes, argue about Vasquez's first name, mend a literal fence, and spend some quality time in a barn.)
