Work Text:
Sleeping isn’t usually a problem for flower boy Kim Seokjin. He can fall asleep whenever, wherever he wants.
Tonight, however, is an exception.
BTS’ power visual turns for the nth time and heaves an exhausted sigh.
Tomorrow’s schedule is too full for his life: practice, prep for awards shows, more practice, recording for the new album, practice again, photo shoots, and another round of practice. They had just wrapped up the WINGS Tour in Seoul and he should be dead to the world right now.
But he’s not.
Aisht, this fucking sucks.
He tosses over again and stares at the ceiling of his new bedroom.
Yep, his new bedroom.
Jin’s still overwhelmed with their new dorm at The Hill. It’s definitely bigger than their last dorm; it’s so big, he’s willing to bet a thousand dollars they can dance Not Today with their backup dancers in the lobby. Jimin tried to summersault twice the other day; he managed to do it all the way to the dining room.
That’s how big their new place is.
Even the rooms are ridiculously spacious.
Jungkook was delighted when he saw them. He was no longer that grubby boy who stuffed everything in his “closet;” finally, he could fit that second drum set he just bought.
“As long as you stay in your room and stop sleeping on our beds, you’re good to go,” Jin once told him.
“Ah hyung but I get lonely sometimes.”
“Shut up, you just hate your bed.”
“That and I do get lonely!” argued the maknae, “You don’t know how it feels to be roommate-less!”
“Well, we will now,” announced Namjoon, “The new dorm is big enough to allow us to have separate rooms. Still, that doesn’t mean we’ll crash into someone’s bedroom because we’re lonely, Kookie.”
JK pouted at his hyung, clueless to Jin’s change of expression.
“Really? We get our own rooms now?”
“Yep. Only Hoseok and Jimin are sharing again,” explains the leader, “They’re getting that super big room with a very spacious walk-in closet.”
“Wait so…everyone but them is finally getting their own room?”
“Yeah hyung, why are you worked up all of a sudden?” asked Namjoon, raising an eyebrow, “Don’t you want your own room? Or do you still like being roomies with Suga hyung?”
“Ahh this is Jin hyung’s dream come true!” butted in Jungkook, “He has been talking about having his own room so Odenggie and Eomukkie can cry in peace. Plus, he can finally buy all the Mario plushies without annoying Yoongi hyung.”
The dongsaengs laughed; Jin joined but his was a half-hearted laugh.
His eyes were nailed at the back of Yoongi’s head (who was asleep in front of them).
That’s how Jin ended up in this room — all alone.
It’s not that Seokjin hates his new room; in fact, he loves it. He finally has enough space for his guitar, Mario plushies, and other junk. He also bought his sugar gliders a new cage, which fit perfectly in the corner of the room. Odeng and Eomuk obviously liked the change; they’ve been flying all over their new home.
It’s a pretty neat room.
The problem is: he’s alone.
Bangtan’s visual sits up and rubs his tired yet very handsome face.
Whether he likes to admit it or not, one truth remains: he misses Yoongi.
Initially, he thinks it’s ridiculous. He sees Yoongi every now and then anyway; they have practices and schedule together. But it’s different when they shared a room.
When you’ve been roommates for more than five years, you’re bound to miss the other.
(and it also doesn’t help that Seokjin has a huge crush on his subtly fussy dongsaeng)
His first night in his new room, he felt overwhelmed. Their old room was big too but sharing it with Yoongi made it more comfortable.
Scratch that — Yoongi made it feel like home.
Sighing in defeat, Jin gives up and rises from his bed. Maybe a glass of milk can help him get some shut-eye.
He exits his room and quietly walks down the long and dark hallway. He can hear Namjoon snoring quite loudly from his room; Taehyung must be really glad that he’s rooming on his own with Yeontan.
Once he reaches the kitchen, he flips the light switch and heads to the fridge, allowing his thoughts to consume him.
It’s weird to think that quiet, serious, and straightforward Min Yoongi had that effect on him. When they were roommates, they didn’t do anything spectacular (how Seokjin wished they did). The most outlandish thing they did (in Jin’s opinion) was push their beds together whenever they watched movies. Jin would always suggest a film and Yoongi, no matter how tired he was, would agree and start combining their beds.
This movie watching sessions frequently ended with Yoongi falling asleep first, but it was okay. His head would often land on Seokjin’s shoulder anyway (and he absolutely loved that).
There were times when they’d have these little jamming sessions. Jin, after a night of drinking with friends, would come to the room and see Yoongi messing with his piano. Instead of telling the dongsaeng off for still being awake at 3AM, he gets his guitar and they start playing.
“Hyung, you sound like a beggar trying so hard.”
“Maybe you should just sing, Jin hyung.”
They were mean comments but Jin knew Suga was just playing him.
Of course, Jin loves those rare moments when Yoongi ends up snuggling with him unintentionally. These happened frequently in their second dorm and not much in their third.
The eldest pours himself some banana milk, finishing the last drop (Jungkook will definitely kill him). He drinks and smacks his lips when he’s done. He contemplates on finishing Jimin’s low-fat almond milk but decides against it.
He can’t have two maknae line members killing him tomorrow when he’s sleep deprived.
I just have to get over it, I guess.
Jin washes his cup and places it back in the closet. He’s gonna have to force himself to sleep; otherwise, he’ll look like a mess.
He shuffles dejectedly as he makes his way back to his room. Before he can reach his, however, he finds himself stopping in front of a wooden door.
It’s Yoongi’s room.
Unlike Namjoon (who you can hear snoring from miles away), Suga’s room is quiet. Part of Jin wonders if he’s even home. Before their recent comeback, Yoongi spent most of his time in his studio. A week before Love Yourself dropped, he practically lived in the Genius Lab.
Admittedly, Jin missed him during those nights, but he always rested in the knowledge that Yoongi will come back to their room.
That’s no longer their story.
He’s sorely tempted to knock and wake Yoongi up. But then what would be the point? Should he ask his dongsaeng for a cuddle because he feels lonely?
Hey Yoongs, I know it’s 3AM but I was wondering if I can crash and hug you? I just need the affection.
In his head, it sounds stupid already.
But he really wants nothing than to be with Yoongi.
That has been his truth for a year now.
Seokjin decides against his decision and sadly walks back to his room.
I’ll just hug my RJ plushie. Maybe that can give me solace.
He opens his room’s lights and starts looking for his BT21 character. RJ has always been a cute snuggle buddy, but nothing will beat Min Yoongi.
“Okay, where the hell did RJ go?” he asks out loud. He rummages through his boxes (he has been putting off unpacking lately; lazy ass, right?) and searches for his beloved alpaca. Jin then goes to his walk-in closet, trying to remember if he left RJ somewhere.
This is crazy. Did he just disappear?
Jin’s starting to get annoyed but he can’t get worked up. He’s too tired.
But I’ve already set my mind on hugging RJ, he complains, I won’t be able to sleep better now.
His mind automatically thinks of Jungkook. The maknae has a bad habit of stealing their stuff when his hyungs aren’t looking.
Immediately, he stomps out of his room and walks towards JK’s. He doesn’t even knock; with Jungkook, he does as he pleases (even though he puts his neck at physical risk). The eldest walks in the maknae’s room and opens a small lamp.
Jungkook doesn’t even wake up at his entrance. He stays dead to the world as Seokjin rummages his stuff, searching for his precious RJ. Cooky sits by the corner, judging him silently. But still no sign of his BT21 alpaca.
When he fails to find his keep, he goes to another room.
Joon is also unconscious, judging from his loud snores. He only grunts a little when Seokjin entered his room. He doesn’t even budge when Jin starts going through his boxes, desperately looking for RJ. The one time he scares the eldest is when he talks out of nowhere.
“Fries are life…” he murmurs sleepily.
Jin doesn’t know where that came from and he doesn’t bother. RJ isn’t here.
Taehyung’s room is empty; even Yeontan is missing. Once Jin finishes looking through the younger visual’s stuff, he decides that RJ isn’t here either. Part of him is worried about V though; knowing that kid, however, he could be asleep somewhere else in the dorm.
When he silently trespasses Jimin and Hobi’s shared room (doesn’t anyone ever lock their rooms here?!), he finds the answer to the Taehyung Mystery.
By the foot of Jimin’s bed, sleeping on Chimmy, is Taehyung. A controller has fallen from his big hands and is resting near Yeontan, who is also slumbering. Tae’s head is close to Jimin’s, who also fell asleep on his controller. Their faces are so close together, Jin fears one of them might end up kissing the other when they wake up.
(but then again, he has always suspected something going on between those two)
Hoseok is buried under his pile of blankets but Jin sees his long arm extended to the floor. He quietly lifts the blankets to look for his alpaca. Unfortunately, all he sees is Mang and Hobi in his banana boxers (how appropriate).
He gets out of their room and sighs in defeat. His conquest for RJ seems to be going nowhere.
Although not really.
He still has one room to go.
The idea of trespassing Yoongi’s room scares Jin for a moment.
It’s not just Yoongi being scary per se; it’s the fact that Yoongi has his own room will remind him of his loneliness even more.
He has entered the dongsaeng’s room twice since they moved, but he hasn’t done it with Suga in it. It’s always when he’s gone. Curious Jin just wants to see how his former roommate is doing without him.
Should I look for RJ there?
Part of him is against the idea; after all, he has trespassed enough rooms for the night. Another part, however, will not let him rest until he gets RJ back — that and it also serves as a good excuse to feel Yoongi’s presence.
Jin usually knows the right thing to do.
So, he makes a decision.
He takes a deep breath as he stares at Yoongi’s wooden door.
Here goes nothing.
Quietly, he steps into Suga’s room, careful not to trigger any bear traps (if the rapper had any).
Similar to his, Yoongi’s room is very spacious. A solitary night lamp is lighting up one part of the producer room, which makes walking without tripping easier. From where he stands, he sees familiar items that used to be part of their shared bedroom: the piano, the bookcase that used to separate their parts of the room, Yoongi’s collection of unbelievably useless items, why even? as Seokjin dubbed them.
A sad wave of nostalgia hits him.
This is Yoongi’s room — without him.
He takes more quiet steps until he sees the big bed containing the small 93’ liner.
Seokjin has watched Yoongi asleep countless times, but each time is always a new experience. Quietly, he stands beside the rapper’s bed, gazing at his figure intently.
Yoongi’s back is facing him but Jin can already imagine what he looks like: eyes closed, lips parted a little for him to breathe. The eldest has lost count of the times he has wanted to kiss his bandmate but failed to do so because morals come first.
But here he is, standing over Yoongi like some stupid stalker.
For a second, he has already forgotten about RJ. He just wants to stand there and stare at Suga’s small figure forever.
His human weakness, however, gets the best of him. He has to look for RJ now so he can go to sleep and be prepared for tomorrow.
The singer tiptoes silently past Yoongi’s bed and approaches the sofa where Shooky sits. Sadly, RJ is still nowhere to be found. Shooky and some other LINE friends are the only occupants of Yoongi’s little couch.
Aisht. I’ll just look for him tomorrow.
He heaves a sigh. Before he leaves, he decides to give Yoongi one last glance.
Lo and behold, he finally sees RJ staring back at him from the sleeping producer’s arms.
Seokjin’s heart drops to his stomach.
Yoongi’s an infamous food thief but never a plushy or toy stealer. How RJ ended up in his arms blows Jin’s mind away. His BT21 alpaca is always on his bed; for Yoongi to get RJ, he’d have to enter Seokjin’s room and steal it.
Why would he need RJ when he has Shooky sitting close by?
Besides, didn’t Yoongi used to think his alpaca was the most useless in BT21?
So why is he hugging RJ like his life depended on it?
In an instant, his heart goes soft.
The eldest approaches the bed and kneels beside Yoongi, close enough to see his face. He places a hand on Suga’s arm and slowly wakes him up.
“Yoongi-ah.”
At first, Yoongi refuses to wake. His eyes scrunch in annoyance at the sudden wake-up call. Jin, however, perseveres. He continues to gently shake his bandmate awake.
“Yoongi-ah.”
Finally, he sees the producer’s eyes flutter open — out of focus at first. He watches Yoongi’s eyesight adjust to him.
“H…hyung?” he asks sleepily, “What are you doing here?”
Jin points to his plushy. “You took RJ,” he says, “I want him back.”
Understandably, Yoongi’s a little disoriented. His small eyes are all over the place (Jin always teases him for it when he knows the dongsaeng has no ammunition); he stares at Jin then at RJ in his arms. It takes a while before he realizes what Jin wants.
“Oh…you do?”
“Of course. That’s my character. I’ve been looking all over for him. I thought JK took it,” he says, “I didn’t know you did.”
“I…I didn’t take it.”
“Don’t lie, Yoongi. RJ is always on my bed.”
The 24-year old rapper is slowly coming to his senses; his face is all defensive. Seokjin finds it funny. He likes it whenever Yoongi is a little flustered or embarrassed.
“Did you take him because you miss me?” asks Jin.
“Pfft. Why would I do that?”
“Because I’m not your roommate anymore and you want my presence but you’re not humble enough to admit that. So, you take RJ — aka the embodiment of me in BT21.”
Suga doesn’t reply. He looks at Jin with such an incredulous expression on his face.
Seokjin is just teasing, but part of him wishes his accusations are true. This is, however, real life. It’s not like Yoongi has feelings for him or anything.
But seeing him in the middle of the night like this — dressed up in a plain white shirt and his animal print boxers — satisfies Jin’s longing for his former roommate. He remembers always stumbling on a sleeping Yoongi in the exact same getup. Sometimes, he’d be asleep on Jin’s bed instead of his.
When that happens, Seokjin has no choice but to carry him back.
Not that he has any complains.
“Ahh I’ll let you have my alpaca if it helps you miss your ex-roommate less,” he finally says, “I’ll just get him back tomorrow.” He gets up and smiles at a sleepy Yoongi. “Good night, Yoongi. Sleep well.”
Jin starts to walk back to the door.
“You can sleep here if you want, hyung.”
He freezes.
Was he imagining things or did Yoongi say something?
“What?”
“I said that you can sleep here,” repeats a slightly annoyed Yoongi.
“But your couch is a little crowded—“
“On my bed.”
“Oh.”
He stares at Yoongi’s back, still amazed. Did his former roommate (aka big-time crush) just invite him to sleep on the bed?
“Are you sure?” he asks.
“I don’t mind,” replies Yoongi flatly, “It’s you, anyway.”
What does that fucking mean?!!
Logical reasoning should see Jin politely decline Yoongi’s offer and walk away a normal person. But this is Kim Seokjin — logical isn’t always the answer to his happiness. If Min Yoongi invites him to sleep with him, he will abide.
Trying to contain his excitement, he takes up the big space beside Yoongi, settling comfortably. They have the same bed type but this one feels more comfortable.
Only because it has Suga in it.
“Wah, I knew it. You miss coming home to me, huh?” he teases, masking his feelings with humor, “I will always be that special roommate to you.”
“Special….sure.”
Jin stares at the back of Yoongi’s head. His eyes then move down to the small of his back to his SNSD legs all curled up. He wants his roommate to face him, but he can only wish so much. Instead, he satisfies himself with the warmth radiating from the 24-year old’s body.
“I miss you too, Yoongi,” he says, “You’ll always be my favorite roommate — even if we have separate rooms now.”
Yoongi responds with a mere grunt.
“You’re free to invade hyung’s room if you feel lonely too. The kids will never know.”
“Hyung, please go to sleep.”
“Such defense mechanism.”
“No, I need the sleep. You need it too. Or else we’re both fucked up tomorrow.”
Jin chuckles as lies down beside Yoongi, facing his back.
He absolutely loves this feeling.
“Good night, roomie,” he says.
It only takes a few minutes before Seokjin drifts to sleep — finally.
When he does, Yoongi gently turns around to face the eldest of Bangtan. He stares at this Dad Joke Extraordinaire and bites his lip.
“I miss you too, roomie,” he whispers, touching Jin’s cheek gently with a finger.
Eventually, he falls asleep too.
The morning sees an unconscious Yoongi tucked perfectly under a snoring Jin’s chin, his lips touching the younger one’s hair. Their arms are wrapped around each other as their breathing synchronizes perfectly.
RJ the Alpaca lies forgotten on the floor.
Yoongi didn’t need him anymore. He already has the real thing.
