Chapter Text
Adam liked planes. He liked going to the airport he even liked the stores he loved ordering a coke mid-flight. Why he loved this he didn't know perhaps for a time he thought it was because it brought some change in his rather normal life. Though recent events ranging from abnormal to normal. Made him realize that was not the case, as even after his past few months of revelations, he still felt that same feeling of excitement and nostalgia towards planes and the airport in general. I was looking forward to this, exploring the stores getting food before my flight.
Renee and Phil dropping him and Bella off went exactly as expected. Which was as quick as possible. We stopped by our airline gate got our bags out of the car, did an awkward goodbye hug, and handshake in the car. Then they sped off leaving him and Bella to check in our bags, and hopefully get through security in a quick and timely fashion.
"You excited about seeing Dad?" I asked Bella
"I don't know, I guess"
"Yea I think it will be awkward if I'm honest, but it should be good."
"Yeah..., You wanna go get some food before we go through security?"
"I don't know, once we're upfront I'll ask if there are any good spots to eat after security."
"You're so paranoid," Bella said chuckling
"Shut up, I just don't want to miss the flight." He replied in mock anger.
"Why are you so excited to go there anyway?" Bella said in her usual apathetic voice.
"Wasn't it your idea to go I seem to remember you bursting into my room well Mom and Phil were at the store to ask me if going to forks was a good idea and If I would come along."
"Well yeah, but I did it cause I wanted to give Phil and Renee space. Which I remember you sharing the same sentiment... Was there more to your decision to come out here than just giving Renee and Phil space? " At that moment she glanced at his face and quickly backtracked from her line of questioning. "... I guess it's not too important"
"Actually, there is something I want to tell you, and I should probably do it here before I spend hours on a plane convincing myself not to. After we check our bags, we can get some food. then I'll talk"
"What if you change your mind during the 10 minutes that will take?"
"Well then you can slap me in the face," He said with a smirk.
"I just might take you up on that," Bella replied
" I want to tell you a lot. If I change my mind ill be pissed off at myself later so you better, make sure I don't."
She nodded at this.
Checking in our bags only ended up taking 5 minutes, thanks to the old married couple ahead of us having to be sent to a different line due to having an oddly shaped package. He could hear them complaining still. Even though he was a good ways away at this point. Halfway up the escalator to the main hub of the airport his sister 2 escalator steps ahead of him. He always felt anxious about escalators but the trip up these were rather brisk. Then upon arriving at the top he saw a sea of people, and thereby a sea of lines, but he didn't have the desire to pay attention to that right now, So he did his best to ignore the invisible lines and begun searching for a place to eat with his sister. Ultimately, they ended up going to Panera Bread. Which was not typical for them.
The Lines were more prominent here though he got quite good at ignoring them after months of experiencing them. Upon getting his coffee he elected to sit in the far corner away from prying eyes and hopefully, ears not that it particularly mattered if random strangers at the phoenix airport happened to hear him. Since what were they gonna do? but it was the practice of the matter. Once his sister sat down with her sandwich and water. After waiting a minute, she finally prompted him to speak.
"So I'm not sure if this is something you might already suspect or know, but I'm Gay, I had some hope I was bisexual but that appears not to be the case or at least not in any meaningful way"
His sister simply nodded a few times at first processing the information he presented then replied.
"You're my brother and ill always love you, and I honestly didn't expect this I thought you were just completely uninterested in people like me."
"Honestly, I thought that as well, in hindsight I just was burying my interest. To hide the fact, I liked men even from myself, it took spending time with Phil and him figuring it out for me to realize it"
"Yeah…" She took a deep breath and nodded again. "How does this relate to Phil exactly was he cruel to you because he suspected you were gay?"
He was a bit shocked his sister would think that. Phil was a great guy and there was an issue here but it wasn't what his sister thought it was.
"No Phil wasn't cruel not at all, this awkwardness just developed between us after he found out, cause…"
"That's shitty"
"Well I don't blame him per se I think he wanted a son and he viewed me as that he wanted a son who loved working out, played sports, watched sports, which I met most of those standards, but he also wanted the type of son who liked women a lot, Like I think Phil wanted a son like… Do you remember Dwight O Connell?"
"Unfortunately… Adam, I wouldn't want you to ever be like Dwight regardless if you were gay straight or whatever the hell I am. And you shouldn't cut Phil so much slack, he should be able to accept you and even though he hasn't been outright rude he clearly can't. I'm glad mom found him but that's a dick move on his part."
He was glad his sister reacted well to him being gay, and he understood her feelings though he disagreed with her assumptions about Phil. He was a more traditional guy even more so than Charlie in some ways. It would take time, and even if he never did get over it fully, he was never cruel he wasn't calling him F or G words. He was simply having trouble dealing with the development and Adam couldn't deal with himself for a while, and if it wasn't for more recent developments he couldn't deal with he would probably still be in that boat.
"I suppose you are right." Neither of them said anything after this. He not being in the mood to continue the line of conversation and Bella not wanting to bother him. They didn't speak again until they were through security. Upon getting through he asked his sister a question he was too afraid to ask the past few weeks.
"You think anyone will like us at the new school? I know I only have half a semester left but I worry for me and for you."
"I don't know, honestly, I don't care much either like you said we don't have much school left, and I'm doing this for Renee and Phil, not myself."
"Isn't it kind of depressing doing stuff for other people all the time?"
"You do things for other people all the time yourself. And it isn't just for Renee and Phil I wanted a change of pace, I just hope this is a change of pace I enjoy." Bella paused for a bit too long after that.
"We should get to the gate." Was all she said after the slightly uncomfortable silence.
"Yes, we should…" At that point, the two of them walked towards their gate just as their group was boarding. Ended up in a row ahead, he took the window seat and Bella took the middle.
"I hate the lack of room. On planes." He chuckled to himself mainly.
At this comment, his Sister piped in.
"You can take the Aisle seat if you want," She said
"No id prefer sitting here just wish there was more room is all."
"Care if I get my book out?"
"No, you can ill probably just listen to music myself" After saying that began getting his iPod classic out and navigated to Pretty Hate Machine: By Nine Inch Nails One of his favorite albums, and his sister got out her severely worn copy of Wuthering Heights: By Emily Brontë. He often questioned how his sister could possibly still find that book so engaging when shes read it at least 5 times in the past 3 years. Though he has listened to NIN albums far more than his sister has read her most cherished possession, to be fair. Still, he questioned how someone can become so captivated by the same book time and time again. After rereading the book once you'd be done with it. Music is considerably more subjective than books in his opinion anyways though who knows perhaps the book would captivate him just as much if he bothered reading it. He however had no plans to, he much preferred more recent classic literature, to Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby. Perhaps his sister enjoyed the story since its one of the few popular classic literature stories written by a woman, though he felt there was more to it than that. His sister was not a big fan of Frankenstein a story he loves. Written during the year without a summer 29 years before wuthering heights. Though she was never quite as morbid and pessimistic as him he supposed.
He ended up restarting the album from the beginning as he was contemplating his sister's reading habits so much he did not truly hear the music. Just as Terrible Lie was beginning the captain announced for all passengers to turn off all their electronic devices and stow all carry on items properly. Shortly after that the plane made its rapid descent down the runway and took flight. At this point, he just braced himself for his ears to pop. Which upon getting vocal confirmation that his sisters did via a pained grunt, and not feeling his ears pop himself he realized his ears would not be popping on this flight. Which was a good omen for him and possibly a bad one for his sister, they still were not high enough for electronics to be allowed so he was stuck waiting for the airplane staff to announce it is ok to use electronics, but he didn't care he was just thankful his ears didn't pop and he could stare out the window in the meantime to avoid seeing the lines. So he thought, a minute before the flight attendant began announcing that we could use electronics a headache begun to form. A headache that felt familiar. He looked out the window hoping to lessen it, and he noticed something in his vision high up a line not like previous ones he saw either this was more this was something else.
The lines of purple in the air like a carefully strategized carving in the sky. He saw more than lines to, he saw swirls like curved boomerangs, and tentacles what it was supposed to mean he was unsure. He knew no one else could see them. how he knew this was simple. What he was seeing in the sky was simply not possible. He seemed to be experiencing a lot of impossibilities lately, at the initial appearance he almost appreciated them. They brought his mind off of the more mundane ways he was abnormal. the ways that affected his relationship with his mother's fun-loving baseball star boyfriend Phil. Phil figured out what he was before he even knew himself. Funny that someone else can know your gay before you do yourself. Phil was never rude about this of course. He loved Renee and given he was somewhat in the limelight due to his career he understood times were changing. Though even though he never was rude after he realized he was gay. It made things awkward between the two of them. Phil thought of him as a son to some degree, and he wanted a son he could play baseball, workout, and talk about women with, and Adam met 2 of those requirements but not the third. He hoped one day that awkwardness would go away, Though as things were now he was unsure, he was just thankful Phil didn't tell anyone else. Once he confirmed Phil's suspicions. Perhaps time away by his dad would get his mind off all that, along with whatever the hell was making these strange occurrences happen. Maybe the air in Arizona was just giving him hallucinations that happened to provide keen insights about relationships, maybe he's just crazy. He hoped it was the former but he figured it was the latter. Despite that he still held out hope time away would perhaps make whatever was going on stop. Kind of funny he used to dream about something like this happening but when the impossible finally did happen to him he wished so much that he could just throw it away. He can't drive anymore. sure he can go out in public. He's gotten used to ignoring the lines but he can't in good conscience go out driving when his vision is filled with what he began calling "energy lines" of various tints and colors telling him... Well, he wasn't sure what exactly he thought it was signifying relationships but then what is this line and these boomerangs 30,000 feet up in the air about? Clearly, he understands things even less than he thought. He still hoped that things would calm down when he got to Washington but given his headache and the new things he was seeing things were not looking in his favor.
The flight that would typically feel short felt like an eternity as he got so lost in his thoughts and examining his new "Development". A development still on his mind as he exited the terminal with his luggage he nearly toppled a small child over not paying attention to his surroundings. Which his sister glared at him for.
They got water before they looked for charlie, and located him quickly.
He was surprised to see Charlie Swan, waitin for him and Bella by the terminal casually leaning against one of the many ginormous windows panes that existed solely so those at the airport could see the metal beast they will most likely be traveling in.
He was shocked and his sister was as well. They weren't really sure what to do, all the same he approached Charlie and hugged the man who was mostly absent from their lives.
"Good to see you, Dad"
"You to Adamie."
Internally he cringed at the old nickname but he tried his best to not portray that cringe in front of charlie. He grew to hate that nickname though, it was ok when he was younger but it was very different from the nickname his dad gave his sister, he felt Adamie was such a childish nickname, Just screamed that Adam was some immature man child despite already being 18 at this point. He probably should talk to Charlie about this later. He didn't want to tarnish Charlie's happiness for the time being though. So he didn't
The drive back was informative. Charlie asked us a bit about our hobbies and interests, which went good enough. At first Bella explained she enjoyed reading, and writing. I explained I enjoyed those things as well, but also enjoyed video games, and fishing, and guitar, and how I wanted to learn how to work on cars. Charlie smiled at that last one, he suspected he had an idea of someone who could help him with that desire. Then Charlie inquired if he liked anything else and he mentioned he enjoyed Baseball a lot then things got a bit awkward.
In hindsight he should've considered that mentioning baseball would bother him given how that links to Phil and he and Bella both could tell he has not gotten over Renee despite the many years past. He wanted to slap himself in the face right there and then, but Charlie quickly recovered.
"I know someone who could help you with the car thing if you want."
He had a look that was some combination of Awkward, Happy, and Uncertain. Which most likely described all 3 of them at this moment.
"Sounds good, we almost in town?"
"Up around the corner. Not too far now." Charlie replied
Charlie was not wrong less than 5 minutes later we passed a sign that said welcome to forks shortly after we parked in the driveway of the distantly familiar house. They took their luggage out and brought it into the house up to their rooms quickly. Upon entering his new/old room he was shocked to see excluding the bedsheets, and a few small things here and there his room looked largely untouched. His ancient PS1 games, and action figures still in the same spots on his bookshelf. His PS1 was still underneath his bed in the same exact spot it was when he last was here 2 years ago, in fact, its been in that same exact spot since he was 12. As he hasn't touched the console since then, this development was disturbing but also something he never really noticed on his last few times here. Maybe because he knew he wouldn't be here long enough to really consider his ps1, or his old action figures or his worn down nirvana poster or any of that. But this trip was different it wasn't a simple vacation he and his sister were moving here, At Least for the next few months possibly years. The first time since the divorce, they would be by charlie longer than Renee. WHich was interesting, and almost unbelievable to consider in some ways, he again simply hoped the change of pace would be good for him.
As he just began unpacking properly he heard a car pull into the driveway he looked out and saw a face he thinks he recognized but he wasn't entirely sure. It couldn't be, could it?
But it was who he thought it was, It was Jacob Black, the best friend of him and his sister, like the little brother he never had. (Having a little sister proved to be enough of a hassle to be fair…)
He wasn't surprised by Jacob's long hippyish hair. He saw a lot of guys in the reservation go that route. Though he had to say he didn't think it looked good on him, a shorter cut would do him a lot better probably. Though he wasn't gonna say that to his childhood friend the first time they reconnected. He began heading outside at this point to greet Jacob and his Father.
But as Adam more properly looked upon Jacob and his father Billy he began to develop a mild headache, and upon looking at him he saw something that he hasn't seen before, Billy appeared to have some silhouette of a sleeping beast inside him, and jacob had a silhouette beginning to form, not quite to completion though, This new thing did not bring on a migraine or even a headache like the one he got on the plane, it only was a very minor headache at most, but what he was seeing with his eyes brought on many questions, Billy and jacobs line was strong as he suspected it to be but it was thinner on Billy's end, why that was he was unsure perhaps it had to do with whatever the silhouette signified perhaps it just had to do with their personal relationship perhaps a bit of both.
"Adam is that you?" Jacob Asked bringing him out of his thoughts.
"Yea Jacob its me Adam, the one and only"
"Haha, You remember me?"
"I just said your name." Adam said in a joking tone
"Haha thanks, I would've expected your hair to be at least my length given how you used to be. Surprised to see it so short though"
"You look well different, good but different. You lost your washington roots, clearly you need to be indoctrinated again."
"Haha, What goes into the re-indoctrination?"
"Well first of all you're gonna grow your hair out until it's at least twice as long as mine, and second stop shivering like a pansy. It's 45 degrees, not 10."
"Wow… I see my childhood friend for the first time in years and the first thing his lanky long-haired ass does is call me a pansy."
"Well I'm all about honesty, the sorry man just can't lie, Heavyweight on the soul and all that."
"Haha, Asshole"
"Whatever douchebag.." At this point, he and Jacob walked towards each other to give one another a hug.
Far from the conversations, he expected to have with Jacob but funny how they were able to pick up right where they left off when they were kids.
"So what you guys doing here? Just coming to say hi, and see my sexy face or what?"
"Nah actually.." Jacob paused what he was saying, seemingly too captivated by something a few feet behind him, He turned his head to look to see his sister. Then Jacob continued.
"Actually Adam Charles Swan, and Bella Marie Swan I am proud to tell you, You have been randomly selected to be the recipients of this amazing, out of this world, high quality red 1953 Chevrolet Pickup truck."
Him and Bella both were speechless for a minute, where we really getting this car.
"You are giving us a truck?" Bella asked clearly a bit stunned himself
"No, your dad bought it from my dad and he is giving it to you, he can't use it anymore and we fixed it up for both of you."
"... Thank you. You didn't have to do that."
"No big deal like I said dad can't use it anyways and we have other vehicles to use."
"You guys can always be dropped off in my squad car if you want though," Charlie yelled humorously from behind.
"Nah that's ok dad, I think will stick with the truck." He said with equal wit.
Just as that was said Billy emerged from the house, Him and charlie did a little childlike dance of sorts, or well he couldn't think of a good word for it, but he certainly appreciated Charlie and Billys, relationship and based off of their faces alone he could tell Bella and Jacob did as well.
"Adam, Charlie tells me you are looking to learn how to look on cars, and we could use the help, this Jacob kid just isn't cut up for the job so incompetent, would be great having someone of your calibur working with us instead."
Jacob glared at his father for that, he simply laughed.
"If you ever want to learn drive down to the reservation and ask for me or Jacob, or call and ill send Jake or one of the boys to pick you up."
Adam nodded, and gave Billy thanks.
"Nice to see you and Jacob again Billy. Been awhile. MIght take you up on that offer."
"Please do, like I said we have far too many incompetent workers."
Jacob glared at his father again then smiled.
"See ya soon Adam, you to Bella," Jacob said
"Peace out." Was all he mustered.
They pulled out of the driveway as Charlie and his sister waved goodbye.
Upon getting in he went back to unpacking and settling in, throughout the day he contemplated both Billy and Jacobs offering to teach him, as well as what the beast-like silhouette was all about. He saw within both of them. Would he ever know what that was about? Should he take them up on their offer to be turned into a reservation mechanic? Honestly, he wanted to, though given what he saw in them, he was reluctant. Of course, he knew Jacob and Billy most of his life and Billy and Charlie have been lifelong friends, but this new thing gives him pause, of course it was quite possible just some new signifier he didn't understand yet. Perhaps an unimportant one even but he felt like there was more to it than that. He thought he would stay on this line of thought for hours, though Thankfully in the time it took him to unpack his mind moved on to other things.
He told his sister one of the bigger truths about himself, not the biggest truth but definitely one of his biggest truths. HIs sisters were very nonchalant about it. Which he was certainly thankful for. Probably the best reaction he could hope for honestly from anyone, not overwhelming positivity or negativity, just a neutral reaction like it's perfectly normal. Would Bella want to talk more about it in the next few days? Would she just not mention it at all? Adam wasn't sure which scenario he preferred if he was honest.
Should he tell Charlie? No. Not right now anyways until he gets a better read of the man, he hasn't even told Renee yet why would he tell Charlie? What should he do with Charlie? He wasn't sure should he watch the game with him like he did with Phil? Should he ask him how he is? Should he wait for him to initiate a conversation? That was something he wasn't interested in thinking on at this moment.
He wondered how the school would be, the students, he imagined most of Forks probably already knew of he and his sister's arrival, So they received the benefits and drawbacks of being the mysterious/interesting new student, Would the students of forks accept him, or would they become obstacles in his way. He supposed only time would tell. This would be a fresh start though, but first impressions are also everything.
He fell asleep halfway into a thought. Hoping his first day at Forks High would be good not only for him but also for his sister.
Chapter 2: First Day of School.
Chapter Text
He slept well, feeling properly refreshed upon waking up. He took a shower again, contemplated the possibilities of today then went downstairs. He was surprised to see his dad at the oven cooking an omelette?
"Thought you had work?"
"Normally I would but wanted to send you and bells off properly"
"Hmm" he muttered in recognition.
"Also needed to use these eggs up, they expire in a few days" Charlie said well looking at the omelette.
"Where's Bella?"
"Ate already up here in her room."
"Now come sit down, didn't make this omelette for nothing."
He sat in the nearest kitchen chair at this point. Charlie smiled, then placed the omelette on the plate in front of him.
"Let me know how it is"
Adam took a bite of the omelette, it was definitely a bit burnt and could use some seasoning but it tasted good enough. If he was at a restaurant he would get mad, but since he was not at a restaurant and at his dad's house and he has never been able to make an omelette himself. He appreciated it enough, but could definitely use some cheese and vegetables for flavor. Burnt plain egg is not the most pristine flavor in the world.
After he finished up his omelette and chugged a glass of orange juice, he let his father know the omelette was good, but maybe add seasoning next time. By the time all this happened it was 30 minutes before their classes were supposed to start so he went up to his sisters room.
He was a bit freaked out when his sister pulled open her door right as he was about to knock, but it was a moment he quickly recovered from.
"Oh… Did I scare you?" Bella said with a tiny smirk plastered her face.
"No, No just was surprised. We should get going"
"Yea thats why I opened the door was gonna rush down and yell at you to get ready to go."
"I am ready, are you?"
"Yea of cours… wait forgot one thing,"
"BETTER GET READY BELLA ITS TIME" He said in mock annoyance.
"Haha, just give me a second.. Im assuming im driving?" She asked
"Yes… for today anyways ill see how it goes from there."
"Really you think youll get back on the road again?"
"Will see…"
"Well I better get the book and pencils i need in my bag, just wait by the car ill be there in a minute."
"Will do"
The minute turned out to be 3 minutes but his sister was down rather quick literally running to the truck. Which knowing her knack for falling randomly for no reason was probably not a good idea. Thankfully she made it to the car safely and then we were off.
The drive down the block the first thing he noticed were the lines that were usually so prominent were a lot more scarce here only seeing lines going across the street here and there, he still saw lines, but it was much easier to ignore and not so overwhelming on the eyes, perhaps he actually could drive out here?
"You think it will be good here?"
He was driven out of his thoughts by his sister asking that, the same question he asked her just yesterday.
"I don't know, though I have a good feeling so far."
"A good feeling isnt really an answer"
"Its the only one I have though.
Upon arriving at the school they were greeted by a sea of old run down cars in the parking lot, 90s buicks, some fords, even a few other trucks. all seems pretty normal until he notices an elusive silver volvo, on the left side of the lot, a volvo that properly others itself from all other cars in the lot. Which pale in comparison to it. The car certainly does not meet the standards of the town. Why is it here? Perhaps someone important is visiting the school mid semester? The boss of the principal, some rich guy who funds the school or something. He didn't really know why the car was there but he knew it didn't fit in with the town so it had to belong to someone out of town someone of a particular make and caliber.
When he brought himself out of his thoughts he wasn't surprised seeing his sister eyeing the volvo as well, perhaps having a similar line of thinking to him on the vehicle.
"Nice car" he muttered under his breath as he and his sister wordlessly made their way into forks highschool. The inside looked like well exactly what he expected white tile floors, with brick walls, it gave him this weird vibe of being small yet spacious. They made their way to the office and explained they were the new students, which the secretary, receptionist whatever the official title is, seemed completely unsurprised, not uninterested but entirely unsurprised. Hed worry about how that bodes later he supposed. The receptionist gave them each a schedule and explained we need to have all the teachers we have sign it for the day.
After the receptionist was done explaining he peeked at his schedule, "Noooo, why me?"
"Everything okay?" Bella asked seeming gneuinely concerned.
"Yea, nothing crazy, just look at what my second class is."
"Physical Education?"
"Yea physical education at 9:05 am"
"Hmm… I think gym is my last class." She said well holding her schedule up.
"Really, ok how about we do this…, I will be mysterious new girl Bella Swan, and you can have the honor of being the elusive, sexy, equally mysterious Adam Swan."
"No thats ok, sorry I just don't think I can live up to those high standards."
"Aww too bad.."
"Maybe PE won't be too bad here?"
"Even if it isn't bad I don't wanna have risidual locker room smell the entire school day."
"My first class is English."
"Of course you would end up with your favorite subject as your first class meanwhile, I start with History then have Gym"
"I thought you liked History,"
"I do but I really don't like the idea of immediately having gym after I have some history test or presentation or something.
His sister seemed like she was gonna say more on the subject but then we were interrupted.
"Hello, You are the new students?"
"Yea."
"Yes.
""Hello Im both of your best friends now names eric. Ill help you find your way around for today. What classes you have right now? "
"History"
"English" Bella and he said at the same time.
"Sorry repeat that."
"History for me, English for her"
"Oh those are on opposite sides of the school…"
"Ok, Plan will all walk by the history door then ill take her to english"
"Ok."
The walk to the class was rather quick only a few hallways away. Then he left me to my own devices promising he or someone else would be around to help after class.
History was interesting after his awkward introduction which went "Ummm… Hey Im Adam Swan, im from arizona transfer student."
Apparently we were learning about the colfax massacre in the civil war era, appeared we'd be reading a book for the semester. Class went by surprisingly fast and as it got out he wasn't really surprised when Eric wasnt there to help him out, or anyone else from what he could tell, thankfully though someone seemed to notice he was out of sorts.
"Hey you lost?" Genuine concern coming from the male voice that said it,
"Uh, yea you know where gym is?"
"You got gym in the morning? LUCKY"
"Haha, I don't think so but whos to say"
"Sorry, forgot to introduce myself Names Mike Newton. Im on the track and field team and used to be on the baseball team, so I can definitely show you where the gym is."
"So you like history?"
"I mean the teacher seemed alright and the era we are focusing on right now is interesting, Though honestly always been more of a fan of european history over us history"
"Im just not a fan of history of any kind."
"Haha, I can understand that" Adam Chuckles.
"What classes do you like?"
"Psychology, Calculus, Gym"
"I figured the last one already"
"Haha, yea big on sports, personally"
Mike paused at this point,
"Gym is right through those double doors down there" He said pointing.
"Ok, thanks for showing me the way?"
"Yea of course, anytime, Be seeing you"
At this point Adam began making his way towards said double doors and as he made his way he began to develop a headache, he didnt think much of it until he entered the room.
—-
As soon as he entered his second class Phy Ed he had a headache, of intense proportions he had no idea what the cause of his headache was until he began trying his best to look around despite the throbbing in his brain . He saw a man leaning against a wall in the corner of the gym a very big guy abnormally muscular, he was certain this man was the source of his headache. He had a line by him possibly the most intense line he has seen that led out of the room somewhere else, he wasnt sure where. but there was something more to, it reminded him of the vibe he got from jacob but this image was considerably unclear instead of seeing a beast of sorts on him he just saw a large blob of purple darkness, couldnt acertain what it meant, but it definitely hurt his head alot more than whatever jacob brought on. Like a jackhammer in his brain a pain he hasnt geñt since he first came into his "powers" , His curse months ago. But seeing this man here was like experiencing it anew.
So in the past 2 days he experienced 3 new weird sight power things, 2 of which were in the nowhere town of forks, 1 of which made him feel a pain he has not felt since his powers came to be. What was up with this town? This isn't just coincidence anymore…
"You the new student?" Said a gruff older voice
He looked up to see what he assumed was the teacher, they had a older face possibly late 40s some graying hair but they looked relatively healthy.
"Yes, Adam Swan?"
"See you here looks like your sisterbwill be in my gyn class as well"
"Well here get yourself changed in the locker room."
"Oh I don't have any gym clothes well that won't do."
The gym teacher began leading me somewhere.
"Normally I wouldn't do this as im not supposed to but we have some extras so here"
at this point the teached handed me a few clothes wrapped in plastic, one was a short sleeve school shirt, the other was some school themed shorts.
"Thank you, these mine to keep?"
"Yea, but don't tell anyone I said so"
"I won't, Where should I go after changing."
"Just wait where everyone else is northside of the gym"
He changed quickly and went to the northside of the gym. Unfortunately the northside of the gym was the same side the source of his headache was on. Gym was already hard enough, why did this have to happen?
Thankfully though he was able to stand as far away as possible from the guy being the other corner of the north side, and his headache though still very much present was begining to die down.
Which was definitely a good thing cause they were seperated into 2 groups shortly after and of course he ended up in the same group as the guy. Guess they were gonna be practicing hitting a volley ball to eachother well in a circle.
"You the new kid right, Chiefs son?"
"uh yea… and you"
"Call me Chris"
He looked over at chris he looked like a lot of other guys in town, Had short faded hair, and was on the smaller side, though his shirt caught his eye "NIN"
"So you a fan of Nine inch nail?"
"Sometimes yea"
"Favorite Album?"
"I don't have a favorite album just think they all are pretty good, My favorite song is probably…" His eyes went up in thought for a moment.
"Reptile, on the Downward Spiral album"
"I always liked how trent brings our the vocals in that one."
"You mean when he comes out all like ~shes got the BLOOD OF REPTILES~"
"Yea exact part I was thinking of actually just sounds kind of bizzare but also really good, and then the song really picks up"
"So you enjoying forks?"
"Well ive been here for 2 days hard to say"
"I've lived here my whole life, I like it though cant say I dont wish I could go somewhere.. Grander I suppose, like phoniex"
"ey phoniex has its own problems, Personally I looked forward to coming here, and its been good so far which isn't really saying much"
"But it means something,"
"Christopher, You ready for this shit." a male voice said that from a few feet away, He looked towards the voice and was surprised to see the source of his earlier headache, Looking right at him did make him flare up mildly but the brunt of it was gone thankfully" Though The man still appeared to notice his discomfort, as he made a face, of confusion.
"Yea emett I am, what about you?" Chris replied.
"Hell yea I am, bring it on like donkey kong"
"Oh hey, Emmett Cullen, your the new student?"
"Yea, Adam Swan."
"Awesome"
"How you two no eachother?"
"We've been in the same classes a few times"
"Ah, thats cool"
"He honestly wasn't that invested in the conversation anymore, after the source of his headache appeared he got a better look at them, From what he could see which actually wasn't alot given the purple darkness still enveloping alot of him, He looked and acted like a fairly normal student, save for the rather large muscles, but that wasnt that crazy some if the football players back in arizona came close yo his size. Though their still was something quite grand about it, another thing he noticed was his face, it was pale, very pale so pale it almost looked like it glowed, He wasn't paper white but he was fairly close. He had a good looking face, but the glow, and even just the particular type of attractive he was was unnerving why that was he wasnt really sure. From the little interaction he had with him he reminded him, of some of the sporty guys at his school, the ones that wernt assholes generally had this chill hunorous demeanor that Emett matched pretty well. Personality wise atleast so far he seemed perfectly normal, but visually both in regards to his abilities and what he physically saw, left questions and uncertainty in his mind. Should he be concerned?
Probably better if he wasn't, I mean just yesterday he saw the weird wolf like beast inside jacob, and he didnt find it unnerving, he found it curious, and troubling yes, but not unnerving. so why was he concerning himself about this.
Thinking on it he realized he didn't have an answer so he decided for now he would simply do what hes gotten quite good at, ignoring it.
Which proved hard until class officially started, then instead of glancing at the lines of others, and the strange purple darkness of emmett cullen, he instead put all his focus on the volleyball and did quite well, at the days practice exercise because of it.
Class went by pretty quick after that, so quick what should've felt like an hour felt like 20 minutes. His headache was completely gone by the time class ended. Won't have to worry about it flaring up next class we have together. Over the past few months he learned thats how whatever it was worked, if something new caused him a headache be it a intense migraine or a mild headache, if it went away. He wouldn't get it again for that specific instance anyways.
Which is a good thing he was worried he would have to deal with these headaches for the next couple gym classes at least. Thankfully not.
After changing into his regular clothes, he began heading towards to door back to the hallways of the school but was stopped.
"Yo, Adam Wait" He looked over to see chris.
"Was wondering would you wanna exchange numbers? Figured since your new and also have superior taste in music."
"Haha yea sir"
After that the two exchanged numbers and went their seperate ways, Chris's next class was History, and his next class was physics. The next two classes went by pretty quickly since he one already knew quite a bit regarding physics, and government and two there was no physical activity or mysterious migraines. All was well until lunch, as he made his way down the hallway as he neared the cafeteria he felt a headache of intense proportions. Which as soon as he looked towards the source of it he swore his head nearly exploded, it felt like all the nerves in his brain were being poked, hammered, and having acid poured on them all at the same time. The source of course was the table with emmett cullen at it along with 3 possibly 4 others, he didnt really look cause as soon as he even glanced in the direction he felt the most immense of pains flare up in his head. and closed his eyes immediately, He felt a soft hand on him only a few moments later instantly recognizing the touch as his sisters
"Are you ok? is it happening again?"
"Im not, and I dont know, just let me sit down dont do anything yet"
"Ok,"
"Bella, You and your brother wanna sit with us?"
Even though he couldnt see he could tell his sisters was put off guard by this.
"You mind if we sit with them?"
"Its ok, Just let them know, So they know not to be out off if I dont talk much"
"Ok."
"Hey, Jessica, My brother has a migraine right now."
"Oh my god thats horrible, are you okay?" Said an unknown female voice he assumed was Jessica
"Yea, you okay dude?" Said the familiar voice of Mike.
"I will be, just dont talk to me too much right now not trying to be rude, just every little thing bothers me"
"Yea dude" He didnt miss the offput tone in his voice.
He let himself lay facedown to the table and after about 5 minutes his horrible headpain mostly subsided and he felt confident in opening his eyes, and joining in on the conversation his migraine mostly tuned out, then as soon as he lifted his head and opened his eyes, headpain returned again but not as prominent, a more tolerable form, like a force was on a small part of his head opposed to his entire head being tortured in 3 different ways.
when his eyes cleared up he saw a man looking right at him, someone at Emmett's Table, Someone who produced a similar purple darkness to Emett.
"Who are they?"
He looked at the others at his sisters table and they all had this slightly annoyed look on their face.
"The Cullens" Said the female voice who invited them to the table earlier in a rather dry manner. He didn't really want to deal with someone being angry at him on day one so he decided to take a risk and try to mend t situation.
"Sorry, did I say something I shouldn't"
"No, sorry its just we already explained who they were to your sister just a minute ago"
"Oh Sorry I didnt hear I guess cause the headache and all that"
"You better now?"
"I think so, sorry again I just asked cause Emett, the big one is in my Gym class"
"You have that slab of meat in your gym class?" Somehow the girl managed to make that comment in a way that was both mildly sexual, but also filled with disgust.
"Yea, he was pretty nice though"
"Uh… Yea I guess, anyways ill go over it quickly, Theres emett, who you already know, Alice and Edward Cullen, then theres Rosalie and Jasper Hale, and they are all together and they are related so gross"
Despite the girls clearly judgemental and Biased opinion, and tone. He had to admit that last bit did put him off.
"Well the hales are with the Cullens but they arnt related by blood just by adoption" Mike chimed in
"Still gross" The girl quickly replied
He had to admit the girl had a point, it was at the very least weird.
He spared another look at the cullens and he realized besides the familiar purple darkness emett had something more was there as well on the head of the one who was staring at him earlier Edward. , there was a reddish blotch, Looking over at the rest of the table he saw strange colored blotches on 2 of the others heads aswell, Green on the girl with the short spiked hair Alice, and Yellow, on the guy with the medium length blonde hair, Jasper. He knew that these blotches are what caused his intense flare up a few minutes earlier. There was something similar about the blotches but it was different enough to warrant different colors… What did colors mean exactly. He still wasnt entirely sure as before yesterday he never saw anything besides lines between people. Speaking of lines again, the lines between the cullens were quite prominent, He finally got an answer where the other end of the line he saw in gym class led to, and the answer was the girl he was sitting next to, Rosalie, Alice and jasper shared a line of equal prominence. Which troubled him, he never saw a line so strong before even between couples that have been in loving relatioships for years, and best friends. Not to say they didnt have prominent lines as well, but the prominence of the lines the cullens and hales had with one another was disturbingly perfect, no transparency, no cracks, it was pure white.
Strangely only those dating one another seemed to have a line at all, despite supposed familiar ties, the hales didnt have even a thin line, and neither did the cullens, they only had lines with their Significant Others..
Which on top of all the other weirdness, That somehow unnerved him the most. He always saw blood connections, emotional ones to, he was clearly seeing some of the cullens and hales respective emotional connections but not all of it, and he was entirely missing the blood connections.
Then came edward who had a line but it wasnt connected to anyone at his table and it wasn't white, it wasn't even the usual gray, it was Blood red, and it was connected to… He looked behind him expecting to see it go past where he was to some room or place beyond his scope, but instead it was connected directly to his sister...
—
When he saw his sister staring at the cullens just like he was he had some small grain of hope that see saw what he saw, then he realized everyone at their table and even several people at other tables were looking at the cullens all the same. He highly doubted everyone in the cafeteria suddenly gained his ability in the past minute so he assumed this was just a normal casual fascination. Maybe there was some explanation for this, maybe the cullens aura or whatever he was seeing was so strong that people who weren't so mentally messed up like him were able to see some portion of it to?
What was that blood red line about, what are the cullens about in general, that whole table is so alien compared to everyone else here, sure that emmett guy was nice, in the 2 minutes I interacted with him, and if it was just that his brain would've been content mostly ignoring it, but all of this in one day was weird as hell.
After that thought bubble subsided for a moment he asked for everyones name, and reintroduced himself to mike. He could tell Mike, Jessica, Angela, and Eric. Have been friends for a long time, just by how they talked with one another, but seeing fairly strong friendship lines helped as well, something else he saw was jessica seemed to want more than friendship with mike. and Mike wanted more than friendship with his sister… Well that was if he was reading these things right, which before yesterday he figured himself somewhat of an expert on reading the lines only he could see.
But regardless if what he surmized was right or not, he debated in his head if he should scare mike off, Convince him to go for it, or do neither. Realistically he'd probably choose the latter. In part cause he was too much of a coward to do the other two, and in part because at the end of the day it was probably better if he didn't get involved in his sisters love life.
—-
The rest of the day was pretty uneventful save for his last class Economics, which was in part cause the teacher some how made the economy sound entertaining, and also cause Alice Cullen in all her Green blotch glory was 2 desks away from me. Despite several guys and girls talking in the back 2 rows where we were. She remained intently listening avoiding all the chatter. I tried my best to do so as well, failing a bit, apparently some girl named Holly Confracted a STD from someone?
He felt as though he heard this exact conversation at least 3 times before so he again did his best to tune it out and managed to gain some insight into what was said. Near the end of class he looked at the Cullen girl again, maybe he should try talking to her, Her older brother seemed nice enough, and he wated to normalize these people in his mind so all the weirdness with them would stop consuming his thoughts. He debated in his head. If he should go up to her, make some shitty excuse about needing notes, or help with class, hell that wasnt even an excuse he did need help with class. Maybe he could just go up to her and ask "Why do you have a green blotch above your head? By the way I need help with econs can i cheat off your notes? Thanks"
He almost laughed out loud at his imaginary, scenario. And ultimately decided he wouldn't go up to alice. Not right now anyways. Theres so much to unpack already.
He spared another glance at alice and she was no longer looking at the board or the teacher; she was looking directly at him...
I didn't actually laugh out loud a bit did I? He looked around no one else was looking his way, He looked back at alice and she was again staring intently at the front of the classroom. Odd..
Perhaps she noticed him glancing at her a few times earlier.
—
After class ended he passed by Angela and Mike, well looking for his sister, He waved and said goodbye respectively. He found his sister by the office. a ways behind another student, of course that student ends up being edward cullen. Hes speaking rather loudly to the secretary seemingly pissed off about something. Then he storms out the door yelling about having to deal with it or something like that. Then he rushes off like he was auditioning for some part in a play.
"That was something" I dryly stated.
"Heres my Sign sheet" His sister said, seemingly in the spot where Edward was just a few moments before.
"Thank you Bella looks good and your brothers?" The women said eyeing me intently.
I almost forgot about that thing, where did I put it … I checked my bag then found it extremely crumpled up in the front pocket. Which compared to my sisters very pristine sheet is quite the contrast, I gave the women the sheet which she looked at with a face of disappointment examined for a few moments.
"Looks like you are both free to go, again welcome to town, have a good rest of your day."
"Will do. You as well" I replied.
We headed towards the doors to the parking lot at this point.
"How was Emmett Cullen?"
"Why you ask?"
"Just wondering"
"He seemed alright, I had gym with him, humorous personality, clearly likes fitness even said Hi and introduced himself to me."
"Oh…"
"Why did you actually ask?"
"Well its nothing really just… I think Edward was asking to get a different lab partner cause of me"
"Huh? What happened"
She shrugged "Wish I knew, Just was paired up with him cause he was the only person without a lab partner, and he just acted really rude, and got really angry.
"Ey maybe he just was having a bad day, or has some anger issues?"
"I thought that to, but then I asked mike and he said it was the only time he ever saw edward act like that, and then he was really adamant and angry about mot being able to change lab partners, thats what he was in the office about earlier."
"Well, im sorry, I honestly don't know what to say, Emmett seemed fine, and I actually had Alice Cullen in my Econ class, and she wasn't talkative but ahe wasnt rude either, so I dont know maybe hes just the asshole of the family…, Or maybe he is just having a bad day."
"Your probably right, it just bothers me"
"It bothers me hearing about it, pisses me off someone would treat you like that for no reason. Though don't worry too much about it now maybe he won't be so bad tomorrow.
They made the drive home with little comversation, both of them seemed to have alot to unpack, in bellas case it was suddenly having all this attention from others, and the weirdness of Edward, and in my case it was suddenly having all this attention, and the weirdness of the cullens in general, and the odd auras they produced.
Did the red line edward have that connected to his sister represent anger, was it some cosmic warning that edward was gonna be an asshole towards her. He felt that wasn't the case, he never saw lines that represent hate atleast not directly, if a line was thin or a thick line became thinner that normally represented some degree of dislike or hate due to some reason or another. But he never saw a line that represented hate itself, because well in a way hate was just some messed up form of Love or like, in order for someone to hate someone they would have had to love some part of them one way or another, atleast thats what he thought anyways, but even if he didn't identify hate in that way, he just knew that line didn't represent hate, it represented something else, he wasn'f sure exactly what. But it was clearly strong based on the prominence of the line. But what exactly did it represent… He wondered if he would ever find out, if he even wanted to...
Chapter 3: A Weird Dream
Notes:
Jumping right into the bloodborne side of things.
Chapter Text
"...Another hunter you want me to damn another man, to be irreversibly changed, tortured. In all likelihood succumbing to beasthood. Again?"
"You've done this plenty of times before iosefka"
"Yes and everytime I hate myself for it, also Gherman, I don't leave this place but I hear things I hear theres still several hunters operating in yharnam"
"Those men and women.., " Gherman spat out. "They are hunters no more, they may have the physicality of a hunter but no longer possess the spirit, succumbing to their own pointless goals and desires, or insanity"
"And whose to say this man, will not reach the same conclusion?"
"I fully expect them to, but we need a hunter with a hunters spirit to protect this city again. Even for a short time, given the state of things only creating a new one will allow this."
"I will not do this Gherman, not again"
"You may as well be leaving the doors to your clinic wide open for the scourge to ravage you and your patients then"
"When you watch them cry in agony transforming mind and body, and rip the others to shreds, don't come crying to me"
Iosefka took a breath. She appreciated the hunters but a part of her knew they were as much of an abomination as the beasts to turn a man or woman into a hunter was a faith far worse than death. Cracking the code of immortality but never truly being allowed to live ever again.
"I know this is hard for you iosefka, but think of the humans left in yharnam think of your patients, think of yourself. Whats one persons life compared to the many you could help the many the hunter could save?"
"Stop gherman, I will do it, but this is the last time"
"Will see." Was all the man said as she readied the instruments to create yet another hunter.
Then suddenly she swore she saw something in the corner of her eyes.
She startled for a moment which was rather unbecoming of her.
"IOSEFKA be quiet, I heard something"
Once that was said, iosefka remained silent as the Old Hunter began maneuvering his wheelchair around her clinic. The weakened wood creaking at every opportunity. She was never one to question the mans judgement regarding potential intruders, She was overly paranoid of the prospect herself given the state of the city, and her past affiliations. The old hunter saved her from potential death several times now. Though this time she felt as if the vigorous search was rather pointless this time around.
As whatever presence was in the corner of her vision moments before was no longer there.
—
Adam woke up from his rather strange dream feeling well exhausted. The dream was certainly weird, not so much scary but it felt as if he spent the past several hours standing when in reality he was in bed. Which was not unheard of though it was a odd for a dream like this. A dream he was basically not even present in, just a spectator essentially. Not even spectating anything particularly exciting just a conversation. A conversation about some topic he couldn't really understand. Featuring a man strapped to some kind of medical table. Though at the end of the day it was just a nonsensical conversation which isn't particularly foreign to his various dream, and nightmares. So he didn't understand or appreciate feeling like he was up for the past 6 hours when he actually was asleep.
He wanted to fall back asleep, perhaps get a better rest. Though it was nearly the time he would wake up anyways, and he was far too sweaty and disheveled to fall back asleep anytime soon anyways.
He opted to head to the shower, and so he did.
In the shower he again thought of yesterday's events, with the cullens, those students that seemed painfully interested in him and his sister. Mike, Lauren, Angela, and Eric.
Honestly the events in school yesterday consumed his mind so much, he was mentally absent at the nice dinner his dad treated them with at the local diner. Which he was still torturing himself about. Pretty bad of him to ignore his fathers hospitality, especially when he hasnt even seen said father for years.
He didn't even want to imagine what the friend of charlies we ran into thought about it. Probably thought I was some typical selfish teenager. He let these thoughts consume him for the remainder of his shower, but once he finished up and dried off he managed to get his mind on other things. Which basically meant he was back go contemplating the enigma of the cullens.
Charlie wasn't downstairs making breakfast today, he wasn't downstairs at at all actually guess he was at work. Which is probably something he mentioned that I forgot about. He glanced at the time, He still had plenty of time to cook or even bake something for breakfast, though given his laziness, he opted to have a pack of quaker oats with some peanut butter and a glass of water.
After he finished his Oatmeal, he still saw no sign of his sister, for all he knew she was kidnapped last night and he could be none the wiser. Which honestly was a description that applied to both him and his sister. You would think given the outgoing nature of Renee, and the slightly less outgoing nature of Charlie they would be a lot less reclusive. Though that was far from the case, It seems.
After a few more minutes lacking any sign of his sister. He set a timer on his ipod classic to let him know when to come back downstairs and headed upstairs. Found himself staring at notepad on the ancient windows vista computer in his room to work on pulling some essay draft out of his ass.
The essay itself wasn't due for a few weeks, though given it was for econ, he just wanted to atleast get some disjointed somewhat sensical sentences on paper. So he wouldnt have to worry as much about it. He was not nearly as interested in the class as Alice Cullen appeared to be. He also lacked a fundamental understanding of alot of what was talked about in class probably in part due to him attending halfway into second semester. Nontheless he somehow managed to type up a page in a half granted most of the first page was dedicated to his unnecessarily long introductory paragraph, and the remainder of it read like a 5 year olds summary of stock market. Though it was better than nothing. He devoted the remainder of his free time to laying down in his desk chair uncomfortably and listening to nine inch nails.
As soon as his timer went off he headed downstairs to his sister. Who somehow was completely ready and also washed the manh dishes in the sink. He often wonders how his sister manages to disappear from reality, then somehow, do a million things in less than 30 minutes. But just like in phoniex she somehow manages it. If he didn't know how impossibly clumsy she was, he would say she was super human.
The drive in the truck to the school was in relative silence. His sister clearly had things on her mind, most likely relating to the weirdness of edward yesterday. Once they got out of the truck they saw the beautiful volvo that stood out like a sore thumb yesterday drive into the school lot. With the familiar face and upper body of Emmett Cullen sticking out the top via the sunroof.
"Of course that car would belong to them" He stated quietly to his sister.
It was Shiny, Expensive, and didn't fit just like them.
Looking at them he felt they would've fit in alot better in Arizona. Certainly better than he did. Sure there would of been some backlash from people just like here. Would've been plenty of rich kids that they could relate to. Must be lonely for them here, looked at like alien creatures, treated more like object than person.
His sister of course was staring at the Volvo as well, though she had a look of disappointment on her face, for a moment he wondered what that was about, then his eyes caught up with his brain and he realized Edward was not among the cullens.
Which was not really cause for any alarm. Though he understood his sisters feelings after yesterday. She probably wanted to confront him or hoped to get a better read of him today, and as things were it appeared she would not be getting the chance at least for today. He wondered if perhaps the guy had some mental problem, anger issues or some such, and he confided in his parents and is staying home. Though he was hard pressed to think of any high school aged guy who would willingly admit such things much less stay home a day for them. Regardless of the reason maybe it was a good thing, if he was going through something it would be best if he wasn't taking it out on other people especially when those other people are his sister.
Bella still was distracted staring at the empty space that would probably have featured Edward if he would have came to school today.
He wished her a good day. and told her hed be heading to his class now since it was a bit farther away.
She just gave a zoned out "Ok" in response.
He made his way to history not a moment too soon, class was ok today. Though he found himself slipping in and out of consciousness a few times. In part due to the lecture, and in part due to him still feeling like he didn't sleep at all, despite getting several hours of rest. Thankfully the teacher seemed to modtly be rambling on today, and not actually going over very much at all. Normally, he would be annoyed by this, but in this case he appreciated it.
Gym was next which well just like yesterday Emmett Cullen remained in that corner. Though he wasn't messing around with the other guys like yesterday. But once he got closer to the man. He seemed to perk up. "Eyy Adam how ya doing?"
Adam was taken a back he didnt expect emmett to say anything to him. "How am I doing? Im pretty good weird sleep, but im good"
"Awesome, ready to show that volleyball whos boss?"
"Haha, I guess"
"Hell yea, Gonna kick the shit out of that ball"
"Well you don't kick a volleyball"
Emmett seemed like he took a second to think that over then said
"Oh yea you right…"
Emmett was pretty quiet today, other thsn that little interaction. Regardless class went by quickly yet again, and after contemplating the past day and the interaction he and emmett cullen had. He realized he was being hypocritical regarding the cullens, doing exactly what he was looking down on others for. He was looking at the cullens as objects as well. Not in the way several of the locals did but all the same he was not thinking of them as people. He was thinking of them as a force as a puzzle to be solved. He couldn't help but wonder if that was any better than the way Mike and Jessica thought of them. Hot rich assholes.
Which who knows maybe they were but, emmett hasn't given him that vibe, the only one hes had issues with so far is edward and that wasn't his issue it was his sisters, even if he was a dick. That didn't mean his whole family was.
He had questions about them, he had questions about alot of things, but he couldnt let that take over his head. Wasn't good for anyone especially not him.
He was in a much better mood after that revelation. Rest of his classes went by fast. Well until lunch, as his decision to treat the cullens like human beings was not shared by the rest of forks high, or his sister at this moment.
"Can you stop staring at their table?"
"No, I can't its just… it bothers me" She said
"I know you wanted to confront him today."
"How did…" She stopped her words halfwya through. Knowing the answer.
"Well I have known you your whole life…" He took a breath.
"I probably would have thought of doing the same thing if the situation were reversed, But I would have most likely chickened out last minute"
Bella nods in understanding.
"I just wanted to know why?"
"But you can't always know why…"
"I wanted to try"
"Theres always tomorrow." he stated with a smile.
The rest of his classes went by quickly. including economics. Despite the decision he made with himself earlier that day, and the conversation he had with his sister. He wouldn't lie and claim he didn't think of Alice Cullen at all. Debating if he should ask her about edward. Though he decided to wait it out for now. She might not even know whats going on with edward and even if she did, it was a weird thing to ask, and a breach of privacy. He did however almost ask her for notes, Alice, and him and a few other students were still in the classroom after the bell rang, but just as he was making his way towards her
desk she got up and walked out. He doubted she noticed him walking towards the desk, as he was barely out of his chair as she begun walking out. He debated if he should run after her, but ultimately decided that would be far too weird, and he didn't need notes right now anyways.
When he got to the parking lot he saw his sister speaking to the group we've been interacting with the past few days said goodbye to Mike, Angela, and Jessica introduced myself to the other guy Tyler. Then left.
Just like the drive to forks the drive back was silent well up until the last minute or two of the drive.
"I decided im going to confront him tomorrow if hes there"
"You sure?"
"Yes im sure,I need some answers for peace of mind"
"Even if the answers bad?"
"Yes even if his answer is he hates me, I need to know"
"Well as long as your prepared, just remember though even if edward turns out to be a dick, doesn't mean the others are."
"Huh?"
"Bella you seriously don't know that, just because one person is one thin…"
"No, no, no, Adam Adam not what im saying."
"Wondering why you felt like you had to point that out though?"
"oh…"
He paused, he knew why he did, he didn't know how to form
it into words though.
"I don't know I suppose… I suppose, just being in Gym class with Emmett and seeing how nice he is gives me a unique perspective." Alright he knew where he was going he couldn't stop now.
"Compared to alot of people at school who seem to just villify them, but also treat them like some showpiece."
"Im not treating them like a showpiece"
"I didn't say you were, I think your treating them like a puzzle, which I was as well, still kind of am if im honest"
"I just want answers."
"Yea I get that I do, i guess i lost track of what I was specifically trying to say, just if you don't like what edward tells you. First off don't let it put you in a bad mood, and second of all don't let it affect your view of the others. Like I said Emmett seems pretty nice"
"Thank you for that… Im still going to confront him tomorrow"
"I would expect nothing less"

Once we got home not much happened, I worked on my history notes looking up the dates of events i wrote down. Just in case they come up on a test. After that I felt like working on something outside of school work. Searched coding tutorials and tried my best continuing where i left off in phoniex, one of the few things i missed from phoniex highschool was the Programming class. No surprise forks didn't have one as not many high schools did. He worked on that until late into the night. He planned on talking with charlie whenever he came home, but given the time, he accepted that Charlie would not be home till long after he should be asleep.
He took a shower, then went to bed.

Notes: Hair has engulfed patient in all areas. Ears have become pointed, eyes canine like, Nose has turned into wolf like snout. Patient still maintains bipedalism, and is still able to soeak coherently on ocasion.
!MUST RELOCATE PATIENT
Week 2 Day 1
Patient: John Locke
notes: Pateint willingly relocated, shortly after relocation his mental capacity succumbed to beast hood. Still maintains Bipedalism and generally human body shape.
Week 2 day 3 (Night of the Hunt)
Patient: John Locke
Notes: Patient has expanded to roughly 3 times original size. Patient no longer can speak, Observed running on all fours around first floor of her clinic. Beasthood has consumed him Patient is no longer human, 1st floor no longer usable for fear of farther spread.
Why did she even bother reading his chart, she memorized it by heart now. He came to her just a few weeks ago in what she thought was fully human. Perhaps some part of him was succumbing to beast hood even then, the day he first came to her clinic. He certainly looked fully human though. As time went on he begun to succumb to beasthood, though she being the experienced medical practitioner she was. With knowledge both from the healing church and from hunters like gherman. She was not scared. She has prevented the mental aspects of beast hood before. Slowed the physical spread. Even stopped the physical spread in some cases. She was not afraid, She fully believed she could save this man, from experiencing full beasthood, perhaps not forever but for a long time. Even when his symptoms became severe he still retained his mental capacity, she had hoped she could atleast save him from the horrendous destruction of his intelligence and personality beasthood brings on. Though no matter what she did nothing would slow down his descent. Not sedatives, not her blood vial, not even the last remaining blood saint vial she had from her time with the church.
She watched a man turn into something that lacked any humanity whatsoever. One of the few patients who was both lucid and willing to talk to her. Someone who had their own wants, drives, likes, and dislikes succumbed to beasthood, and she could not even slow down the process like she was able to in the past, he also made a good chunk of her clinic completely unusable, on the night of the hunt no less.
What did that mean for the scourge, for her clinic. If she can't even slow down the affects of beasthood anymore would she even be of use to the people here.
She vowed to never abandon her patients. What iif taking them into her clinic, is doing more harm than good. If another John Locke situation happens it could infect the few other humans here , Her included. Some naive part of her thought she was safe due to the knowledge she had and some rituals she was a part of within the upper divisions of the church. As John locke proved though, those only go so far.
"Um Hello" Said a foreign male voice
Iosefka Tensed. The voice was certainly not one of her patients and the only other person who was granted entry here was Gherman. She looked up, the man she saw was certainly not Gherman. He was far too young, and lacked any of the gray hair the old hunter had. He also had the strangest garb shes ever seen. He had a Black material on his upper body, The material appeared to only be one piece and it only covered his torso and his shoulders. On his lower body all he had on were pantaloons made out of some material she never seen before. Could this be a choir acolyte? She eyes the Amputation saw on the medical table between them.
"Who are you? Are you them? Did you bring the scourge?"
"... Excuse me?"
The man seemed confused though she could not risk him being a choir member or worse bringing the plague to her clinic yet again. Iosefka ran towards her saw grabbed it then ran towards the man. The man looked utterly terrified.
"WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP…"
The man started violently grabbing his face yelling wake up. This wasn't uncommon for yharnam as Gherman said earlier plenty of people succumbed to insanity. Though the way he was talking. He heard of this, from gherman.
"Are you dreaming?" Iosefka asked
"WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP"
The boy yelled more.
Iosefka looked at the boy, then her saw blade. At this point she took a big risk. She put the saw blade down, walked up to the boy. Touched his shoulder, he tensed at the motion.
"Are you a dreamer?" She asked again
"Yes Im dreaming" The boy said as the tenseness went down.
"Do you know how you came to be in this dream?"
Chapter 4: A Continued Sleep

Skips ahead a few minutes after end of last chapter.
Chapter Text
"Explain that to me again"
The blonde apparent doctor that he had yet to
learn the name of looked at him. Not a look of annoyance that he kept asking her questions but, a look of confusion of her own. She was out of her depth regarding this to it seemed.
"You are in a dream, you have fallen asleep in whatever strange place you hail from, and a part of you has ended up here?"
"I got that part… but, that doesn't make any logical sense"
"I am not an expert on the subject myself but surely you have heard whispers about hunters, dreamers, the like"
He thought about that for a moment, of course he knew what a hunter, was what a dreamer was , but he did not know what they were in this strange context she was talking about them.
"I'm sorry I never heard anything of the sort?"
"Well the hunters they hunt,"
"Yes…" He wanted to facepalm right there.
"The hunters of yharnam and the surrounding areas, those who protect us from beasts big and small. They dream"
To say he was confused by this would be an understatement.
"What do you mean?"
"From what I understand they sleep they dream then they hunt. Connected to the dream"
He still had no idea what that meant.
"What about me though? Im not hunting."
"Perhaps you an exception to the rule.. perhaps you are a hunter and don't even know it yet…" The woman paused lost in thought
"Well, nevermind that how do I get out of here?"
"That I can not answer, a hunter is trapped here, but as you said you are no hunter certainly not a traditional one anyways"
"What are you?"
"Im just a doctor looking after those who have not fallen to the pestilence of beasthood…"
"What do you mean by Pestilence of Beasthood… is it like an infection?"
" Beasts at least many beasts were not always beasts they started as human or animals, until they inherited the plague of the beast, not an infection a virus. An endemic that has ravaged this city and many surrounding places" The doctors eyes looked up searching for a memory " For... well the time frame is lost on me but a very long time"
"What year is it?"
"Year?" The doctor said the word year like he just spoke in a language no one understood…
"A year is a a period of time like every 365 days is a new year starting january 1st…"
The doctor continued looking confused.. Though then there appeared to be a eureka moment after a few moments of thought… "I have heard of this practice, but long ago as a child, when this scourge of beasts was much more maintained… I believe we did away with that means of measurement."
They've done away with the calendar… Hunters that are not hunters, dreams. This place felt so real, he knew he fell asleep before he ended up here, hell even the one person in this dream is telling him it's a dream, but this place it feels far too real to be a dream. He's lucid dreamed and had sleep paralysis a couple of times in his life. It never felt this real or concrete. Even sleep paralysis the strange limbo it exists in between being awake and asleep. At the moment it feels real but afterward, you realize at least he realized that it wasn't actually real… But this place this woman. Despite the bizarre and fantastical nature of some of what she said it just seemed far too in-depth for one of his dreams. The woman seemed like her own person where in dreams normally he could tell that every person or being within is simply an extension of himself in some way. His dreams never had an extensive lore like this place seemed to visually they were interesting… but
"What is your name?"
"My name is Adam." he said
"I Am Iosefka…" The women paused, looked up into her head for a few moments, "Iosefka, possibly the only sane doctor left in this foul place "
"What is this place exactly?"
"This is my clinic"
"You own this place?"
"Well no in truth, well it belonged to another, a man who was long passed when i arrived I suppose i took his practice over."
"So you are not a doctor?"
"Well no I am, I did never take the general eds I suppose… though that was due to the school and the church slowly dissolving into a cold war. I never received my degree or my bestowation but I did pass all the classes I needed to take for proper medical knowledge."
"Oh… " He was at a bit of a loss the words strangely familiar for such a strange place, well up until the part about the school, the church and cold war. Though judging by her accent and the general state of furniture in the women's stolen clinic. He appeared to be in some nighmarish version of 18th century england or something. But how and why…
*CRASH* *Thud*
Panic shot up through him, he imagined the worst of the worst that it could be. He felt quite certain this place was real but even if it was not his dreams did have a tendency to turn to nightmares after a calm, this dream so far if that truly is what it was, has been quite calming overall after that initial rush of adrenaline of the women trying to attack him things calmed down quite a bit, this place was terrifying but if what Iosefka said was true this place is quite fascinating, not a place he'd want to stay but a dream he would like to recount, so he hoped beyond hope he'd remember such a thing.
He thought in that moment he would reawaken or some such thing, but that is not at all what happened opposed to reawakening he simply was still standing here in the worn down ancient clinic with the women, who seemed quite a ways more tense than she was before. Though far less than she was during their initial confrontation some minutes ago,. "How much time has passed?" he wondered. Though that thought only passed his brain for a moment as the increasing tension of Iosefka begin to reach him, if she is scared this must be a danger. Of course the women was scared of him perhaps it is simply another visitor similar in nature to him. Though something he could not put into words in him told him this was most certainly not the case.
*Clang* *Scruff scruff*
This sound sounded much closer than the initial explosion of noise earlier. Adam opted to do the logical thing and back away from the sound, though it seemed the alleged doctor had other plans, she was heading not directly in the direction of the noise but close to it in a way. She begun walking forward down the hall towards the left wall, which brought her close but also farther away from the source of the noise, oppose to just walking back down the halfway. Like any sane person would. "Dont you have to be smart to be a doctor?"
But he supposed she did give herself the title, it was not awarded to her and honestly from the way iosefka talked about the world outside this place, there was much more to fear. Despite this he still found himself walking towards what he perceived to be an exit, though after taking another glance at the nurse, he instead opted to do something hed possibly regret, which was follow said nurse. If this was some weird situation where he was trapped in another world hed rather not be alone, and even if it was just a dream as even the nurse said, in the moment things still seemed far too real. The women may have left a very powerful and somewhat scary first impression, but he did not desire her death. "When did i start thinking like this?" Strange, i mean morally its correct but when did he ever entertain such thoughts so… Weird with such unique word choices... Why am I. Nevermind just focus follow the "doctor".
As he followed her the wood creaked more and they got through the winding hallway, which he had to admit was quite grand looking despite its worn state. Though something did feel uncanny about it, it was very beautiful but it was also creepy in some way, perhaps just the nature of the moment, but just something about the way the hallway was bothered him, he felt odd, too big or perhaps not big enough. It felt as though he was walking through a place that shouldnt be. THe doctor turned down a hallway, and he heard a voice, it was british accented similar to hers, but sounding less proper, more slurred. "Ive been looking for you teacher… "
"Emily…" Iosefka said shaken " How did you find me, the choir are you here on their behalf"
"The choir, haha that silly group far too little for me they squashed true potential"
"Im on rough waters with Amelia, though I see now what she is what all our vicars have been, they are not great beings, but mere beasts ."
"... what do you mean?"
"Even you teacher all you have taught me you do not see the truth… It is fine though I will show you… I found the key the key to true acendance, not the lie of the choir or the blasphemy of the school."
".. I have no interest in ascendance of any kind anymore I saw the horrors of our group, and the others first hand, it seems you have seen horrors of your own"
"No interest in ascendance , teacher. It seems the chatter is true.. Ive heard that youve secluded yourself to the beggar beast infested streets of yharnam. Working with hunters..." *Spits in disgust*, ."I also hear you are working closely with those infected with the pestilence of beasthood… its sad to see.. I fear you are infected to."
"NOO. emily I promise I am not infected I have been studying the beasts both as a choir member and as a doctor, for nearly as long as you have been alive. I promise I would know if i was infected, and even if I was. The old hunter would surely kill me before i would truly succumb."
"The old hutner has lost his spark and the hunters are cursed.. Beneath the glory of the church and the knowledge of the school, and all our beneath the truth I have found, teacher it is so sad to see you succumb to beasthood, but I will save you do not worry, you will be a great being, what better way to show my thanks."
"NO emily I have no interest in ascendance ive already said"
"Your plague ridden mind is confusing you but don not worry soon you will understand.."
"WHo are you?"
"What another a visitor how could I not sense.. Hmm.."
"A dreamer like a hunter but not a hunter. But a dreamer who does not hunt what..?" "Is he are you?"
"You must be my new acolyte sent by the formless oedon itself.. You must witness "
"ADAM Help"
Adam was never one for bravery he could be brave if a situation really demanded for it but he never really saw himself as the type to really do anything. Though in this moment, it felt as though what was there to lose.
So he grabbed a book from the nearby shelf and threw it at her hand where she had a strange syringe filled with some liquid. The book did not seem to deter her but it did knock the syringe out of her hand. Which it then proceeded to shatter all over the floor coating the wood in a strange aura that… it was like stars. In a way it was beautiful it gave him a migraine to look at but he couldnt stop. The womens foot was caught in the aura and she seemed to be sucked up by it and it was fucked up and he knew it should be fucked up but it was beutiful there was something great about it amazing, he couldnt look away. He craved more of seeing things likt that, the womens skin erupted into strange shimmering shaking almost jello like substances, the floor continues to sparkle like the ever expansive cosmos, and he begun to hear a whisper of something something he couldnt quite understand, he was scared but there was some desire within him to walk forward into the aura and be consumed by it, what could it hold what beauty he needed it… he started to take a step forward. But then was held back by someone "STOP" Iosefka yelled.
"I need it.." i tried to fight against her the whispers became still unintelligible but somehow more comprehensive, and then he felt something hard hit the back of his head and then ...
—-
He fainted he felt his head hit the floor he even heard a creak and a mild gasp from iosefka, but then as soon as his head hit the floor for a instant there was nothing just white and maybe a hint of something. And then just as the white disappeared his eyes opened not in the clinic but in a setting more familiar but still quite foreign, he saw green walls and white and gray tiled floor. He heard a beeping.
His bones and skin and muscles they al felt so worn and sore, like he just had the workout of his life, but his teeth had the familiar tenderness that happened when he slept for too long. It all came together in a feeling of particularly immense pain
After taking a minute to recover from that, he came to the realization that he was in a hospital he saw a woman, in green hospital wear (Scrubs?) and upon her noticing him,
"You're awake… I'll grab the doctor now."
"PAMELA WATCH HIM" I heard a scratchy voice yell. This was not the way I felt someone who just woke up in a hospital bed should be treated, but thinking about it for a few more moments he realized the nurse or whatever the women's official job was, was probably startled
So hes in a hospital… thats so bizzare. Granted his dream did feel quite long. But for him to be in a hospital well he had to have been asleep for quite awhile. Hes fallen asleep for 15 hours before, its rare but it happened a few times. The few times it did his family was worried and inquisitive when he got up. But they never resorted to calling the hospital even renee, who tended to be in particular quite extreme with her worry for him. She never called the hospital, so he couldnt imagine charlie or even bella resorting to such a thing. Unless it was particularly worrisome. It had to have been at least a day…
His thoughts were interrupted by the formation of an intense headache yet again, For a moment he forgot what this feeling was until he remember. His powers. Or well whatever they were. He could tell the doctor was right in the room looking at him but he did not have the ability to look right now, far too much is happening in a short period of time…
He appreciated the respect the doctor gave him. Leaving him to silence. And not speaking to him right at this moment.
That respect was quickly replaced by a voice speaking though.
"Hello Adam... "
"Hey"
"Do you know where you are?"
"Um a hospital…." I thought for a minute about what was happening the days before my dream.
"In forks right?"
"Yea. this is Forks Hospital. And im Dr. Cullen"
"... so why am I here?... what happened?"
"You have been asleep for 5 days… and we are trying to understand why?'
What the hell is going on….?
Chapter Text
"I'm sorry did I startle you?" Dr. Cullen asked
No, it's just 5 days… he began counting the days on his finger.
5 days of my life are gone... In the course of what felt like maybe an hour tops.
"Yea a little bit… but it's ok … just shocked it's been 5 days."
"I'm shocked to I've dealt with short-term comas before but never had a case of someone as young as you…" he said that all with a very charming reassuring smile. Yet something felt off about it. Not as if the smile was Ingenuine but he just all in all gave him an unnatural sense.
"Any idea what it is?"
"Well, I can't say for certain at this moment, though you were in a very strange state for a brief portion of the coma, where several nurses, your father, and I thought you were going to wake up or go into a different state of consciousness" your heart rate spiked substantially but then shortly after it went back to a typical state that is common with patients who are asleep. This happened again right before you woke up.
"Father…"
"Edward, you know you're not permitted to be here when I'm with patients"
"I'm sorry the lady at the front desk just told me you were here"
"Well, I'll be right out but…."
At that point, Dr. Cullen stopped mid-sentence and looked to have gotten a weird look on his face if only for a second. Looking back over at Edward he didn't see any indication of anything that would produce that reaction from the dr.
Weird…
Speaking of weird his headaches are gone now the mild and major pounding he usually got around the Cullens seemed to be gone… normally he would've rejoiced such a change, but something within him felt unease at that. What that something was he could not place.
"Adam may I ask have you ever gotten your blood type analyzed"
"Um no, I don't believe so?" Why do you ask?
The doctor looked at him with a weird look, then produced a smile yet again.
"Well with your father's permission I personally did an in-debt blood analysis and I've come to the conclusion that you most likely have the rarest blood type RHNull"
"What…? Does this have anything to do with the coma?"
"Yea I was shocked too, And no it most likely has nothing to do with your coma, though again I have not reached an exact conclusion on how your coma appeared"
"RHNull? But wait, I thought the rarest blood type was AB negative?"
The doctor grinned with glee at his question.
"Yea that's a prevalent misconception even within the medical field. Though the rarest blood type is RHNull discovered in the early 60s in aboriginal Australian women… Though despite it being discovered several decades ago only around 40 people have been found to have the blood type."
The doctor's dopey smile remained he seemed to enjoy sharing this seemingly arbitrary information about his supposedly rare blood type.
"Only 40 people in Australia?"
"No only 40-50 people in the entire world are speculated to have it of course it could be more common than that but regardless it is still extremely rare"
"How did this happen?"
"I can't answer that perhaps somewhere in your genetics you had someone with the blood type"
"Regardless I got a bit carried away there, the point is you have a very rare blood type that makes you considerably more prone to immune and blood-related diseases. and you've been in a short coma, so with your and Chief Swan's permission, I would like to keep you here for a few more days. Go over with you and your family some treatment and preventative measures "
"I honestly would like to get out of here after finding out I've missed 5 days of my life" 5 days ill never get back…
"I can understand that, Mr. Swan all the same it is my medical recommendation, but it is entirely up to you and your father."
At Least he was honest. Realistically it would probably be best if he did stay, but simply put he didn't want to.
"I'd rather not stay… much longer if I can help it."
"Very well… that's perfectly alright. I still would like to run some analysis though."
Carlisle Cullen said with a picturesque grin at his explanation
Hmmm… this one was certainly different from his kids. Something almost normal about him but still uncanny. But the headache was undoubtedly lesser. That was nice at the very least.
He really didn't like the sound of getting an analysis though. But he figured he didn't have much choice in the matter either.
—-
Shortly after Charlie visited him along with Bella, and all of her friends. He appreciated they cared enough to come to see him but admittedly was a bit weird considering he barely knew them… and he doubted his sister got that much closer to them in less than a week. Were they just bored?
Well, At least someone was making friends here.
"I didn't know what to do… " Charlie stated
"You called the hospital, didn't you? That's what matters" I reassured him, it was jarring to find out I lost five days of my life, and if he thought more about it it was weird that it happened in conjunction with his Strangest dream yet. Something was going on here, but he didn't have the strength to think about it yet. Regardless though it definitely wasn't Charlie's fault
"No that would be your sister, I was at work" he stated guilt-ridden.
"All that matters is that I'm ok now" I stated for charlie to hear loud and clear. It stung a bit that his dad wasn't there for him. He was hoping he would be.
"I was so worried about you!" Bella rushed to him, forcing him into a hug.
A hug that began to cut off his airflow,
"Sister, please…"
"Promise to never do that again" Some cross between anger and fear lingered on Bella's face.
He took a long breath.
"I'll try my best, but admittedly no one seems to have an idea what exactly caused it."
"What did Dr. Cullen say?"
"He said I had a rare blood type RHNull, but he didn't think it related to the coma"
"I never heard of that blood type? But why did he bring up your blood type if it had nothing to do with the coma?"
That was something he pondered for a moment, before recalling the doctor's earlier words.
"Well he said given it's a rare blood type, I'm more prone to certain diseases."
His sister's features turned to fear again.
"Do you know what diseases?"
"No… I'm guessing it could be any number though given he said blood and immune-related"
His sister's face no longer have away what she was thinking but it was obvious enough it wasn't pleasant.
What she said next certainly surprised him though.
"Why?"
"Excuse me"
"It isn't fair. It shouldn't be something you have to deal with"
Bella was right of course, he shouldn't have to deal with alot of things, but he did. Why indeed, he wondered
"Promise me you'll never do that to me again," She said piercing his eyes
"I promise" He meant it he never wanted to be in a coma-like that again. Though in the back of his mind he felt that wasn't his promise to give.
Shaken at the thought, he took a breath and discarded it. His mind returned to a state of peace.
" But I got so much sleep Bells, it was amazing" He chuckled.
Bella looked at him with a disapproving glare but still cracked a brief smile.
"I hate you sometimes you know that" Bella sighed.
He just shrugged, Not really knowing what to say.
At which point she hugged him.
After several awkward hello and goodbyes to numerous denizens of town charlie took them home, Though before he left the hospital Dr. Cullen told them he'd have to come in for a follow-up in the next few days, if anything seemed amiss to give him a call and rush him to the hospital no exceptions. Something charlie seemed to largely agree with to Adam's disappointment.
It was late when he got home but sleep was not something he desired at all, he truly felt exhausted he didn't feel well-rested at all from the moment he woke up, despite being in a coma, and then he had to deal with navigating some weird social situations with his classmates, all well in a hospital, with the smell of shitty food and cleaning solution accosting his nose. But after sleeping for 5 days, and having the dream he did he had no desire to meet the sandman anytime soon.
So instead he researched.
He thought back to what the woman in his dreams said. That he was in a dream, that wasn't a dream.
Because he found himself in this dream.
But what I'd he didn't dream, with that thought he began to search, for all scientific information on dreams he could find. The thing that causes us to dream was called REM sleep, unfortunately, the length of time it took to reach rem sleep from regular resting and sleeping. Was somewhat unclear in the scientific community. With estimates from 60 minutes all the way to 240. With this in mind. To be on the safe side he would set alarms to go off every 50 minutes due to him wearing at which point he would not go back to sleep until he was standing and/or walking for at least 20 minutes, at which point he would go back to bed, for another 50 minutes.
If he started "sleeping" at 8 pm he would get about 7 hours of sleep, which wasn't ideal, but he normally only got around 6 hours most nights as is. The extra hour would help equal out the difference from the. Disturbance of segmenting his sleep into essentially a bunch of power naps in succession.
He would just strategically. Remove rem sleep with this new sleeping pattern. Seemed simple enough.
At that thought, he felt a tingle in his head, not a migraine something else…
It felt like his brain was shaking in his head, as if it was his own personal earthquake, though there was no pain it simply felt odd.
Should he tell Charlie? He thought about it on the one hand he clearly has some weird thing going on with his mind and probably needed medical attention, on the other hand, charlie would likely rush him back to the hospital, which would then deem to put him in a padded room, or possibly worse if what he saw and had was more than just his mind and was truly scientific… well science would never allow him to leave if they even got an inkling about what was going on. He could not trust his dad with this. No matter how well-meaning he may be
With that thought he felt he was sitting for far too long, and got up, checking his cellphone. Dialing Jacob, He would sneak out to the rez tonight it was decided. He needed some simpler times in his as the phone rung. As it rang he glanced out the window the moon stared back as if mocking him.
Chapter Text
Alice Cullen POV
How could her visions lie to her?
Her visions with Bella were still very much there but the visions she had of Adam Swan attending school and giving her and Jasper a chance to properly sit down with him were supposed to occur today.
She was shocked to learn through rumors that he skipped class and was hanging out with the Quiileute of La Push.
Her visions typically didn't fail her like that, when things were supposed to happen. At a certain time, they would. She supposed him being around La Push could've affected her ability, though the focus was on him not on the wolves. What occurred in her vision pertaining to him still should've occurred.
it was a clear vision as well, fairly self-explanatory all things considered. Yet the teenager was not here. Initially, Bella was her sole interest, of course, she put Charlie and her brother into account but Bella was the girl she knew Edward would grow to love, who would one day join their family, at least that’s what her clearer visions seemed to indicate. It all was only potential but there was a high likelihood the lead would occur. She already planned out their first shopping trip and had an image in her mind of Edward reluctantly holding 5 shopping bags.
Though after a few days, she began getting strange visions of Adam Swan covered in blood, and cuts across his skin. She didn’t know what to make of it… so she decided to avoid him until she could make more sense of things. Hoping she didn’t come across as rude or more unusual than typical of her and her siblings.
Though also fearing that those visions indicated something darker was beneath the man.
She looked up at Jasper with the thought, questioning why she let such worries cloud her judgment. She saw and learned much of Jasper's own bloody history and saw much in her eyes as well as the eye of others. Yet In those cases, she got glimpses of happiness and goodness along with the dark. The only visions she got after coming across Adam Swan were visions of him covered in blood and laying in a bed that a giant smooth inhuman smooth brown hand closed in on. She thought it was either a sign of something bad happening around him or boded badly for his mentality, the Cullens were fortunate in rarely meeting psychopaths, though when they did there was a certain association, she never had visions quite like the ones she had with the Swan boy however. It was different but the repeating nature of the same visions of blood gave her pause. not just with the boy himself but she gained a greater reluctance in trying to push Edward to get to know Bella more.
Though after Emmett spoke of him. Despite Rosalie’s dismay, it gave the impression he was a regular if a bit awkward. Emmett was never the most intelligent of them though he did have a good intuition generally. So it calmed her worry regarding him.
That, however, didn’t explain both his and Bella's immunity to thoughts being read, as well as Edward's claims that Adam had a strange effect on the ability for others' thoughts to be understood if they were near him. Edward said it was different than with Charlie, He couldn't hear Adam's thoughts at all much in the same way he couldn't hear Bella's thoughts when people were in proximity of Adam Swan. Edward struggled to hear others' thoughts in a way most similar to Charlie's unique thoughts underwater trait. However, Edward clarified it was more like gibberish was hindering his ability to hear their thoughts, he still could hear them but it required a lot of focus to make out even snippets under the strange collections of noises. It actually hurt him to do so. Though as soon as Adam was gone from their proximity he it begun to fade and he could hear them normally again after two minutes time.
That did not create any new visions for her, though that changed later that night… The night that he entered into his brief coma according to Bella and Carlisle. Proceeding that night.
She began to see a vision of him hiding in the library sipping coffee. Where he suddenly confesses he has psychic powers… and is quickly ostracized by the friend he tells. Due to well that person lacking belief in any of it and being concerned for his friend, confides with his family on the matter. Eventually, Charlie would find out and then feel the best bet would be to get him to a psychiatrist. Well-intentioned but ultimately making things worse, when the psychiatrists not being able to make sense of his issues start to prescribe antipsychotics. Unintentionally ruining the swan families' relationships and also jeopardizing the future she saw for Bella.
It was a revelation that shocked her despite the existing peculiarity, Bella was very much unaware of her mental shield ability, her family assumed the same was true for the brother. Though given that vision it indicated there was something more to him than what Edward and herself knew of. Unfortunately, she didn't get the full scope of what exactly was said to this friend of Adam Swan, only saw glimpses of the aftermath. Though the visions told her enough. Thanks to Jasper being willing to imagine a scenario where he asked about it also allowed her to see a better aftermath. Where a friendship was formed.
Learning later that he fell into a deep sleep, and was in a short-term coma from that night on. To learn how things would go if he spoke to the wrong people she became determined to stop it. Also to get to know the boy, shockingly even Jasper expressed interest that was not entirely due to her own prodding. He wanted to meet another gifted boy… Edward was less interested though he recognized that gifted humans having their abilities exposed would not be good for them even if no one believed it, and it would be best if the situation was handled by those who had an understanding of it, that didn’t make her any less nervous of this plan of course…
The worry seemed silly in hindsight given he wasn’t even here, though the fact he wasn’t here and she was so certain he would be on this day, was worrying in itself, that’s before even considering the fact the teen was in La Push.
Just what could he be telling them? She couldn’t see it, Alice did not think the Quileute would expose him, the skinchangers had their issues but unless his ability was directly violent in some manner like Jane, she didn’t think he’d face exposure to whatever his gift was. The worry was if he confided with one of the people who lived on the reservation, not in the know. What would they think, they wouldn’t understand the real possibility of his words, and possibly spread it in passing.
She got no visions indicating such but even so, she worried about that potential future. Perhaps a selfish part of her wanted to be the one to speak with him about it first. Worrying about the skinchangers coloring his perspective. She doubted they'd be willing to bring him within the fold in a single day, though it depended entirely on Billy Black, and he and Bella already had a history with the man and his children.
Why wasn't her vision accurate this time around, altogether it's bothered her. It was rare for her to be so certain of something happening at a certain time that did not occur.
She felt a familiar hand rub against her back, gently kneading up to the base of her neck, along with a feeling of relaxation set in.
"Alice, it'll be a'righ, ya said you still saw the vision."
She nodded, it seemed this wasn't their only chance for this. It just was unusual though, a timed event like this either happened when predicted or not at all. Strange there'd be another identical chance in the matter.
With that thought, she grabbed jaspers hands as they walked until they separated getting back to their respective classes.
Despite Jasper easing her worries for the moment, her thoughts did return to Adam in Econ, when he still was not around and concluded he indeed was in La Push.
Later that night she had a vision of Adam being dropped off back at Charlie's by Jacob. Which brought her some ease, though it still didn't indicate whether anything was told to him by the Quileute. she did notice there was a Cedar rose weaving held in his hand. Though being gifted a Weaving hardly indicated anything, for all she knew it could've been given to him as a recovery gift.
Discovering a human with a supernatural gift similar to their own, got her curious about her past again. There always was a lot of thought around whether humans were capable of having gifts like her divination, Jasper’s Empath capabilities, or her brother's mind reading. The general consensus was no, though, despite that, it did not stop Carlisle and certainly not herself from speculating on the matter. Adam Swam seemed to be living proof of that.
Carlisle was in full support of it, eager to learn more about the Elder Swan sibling's capabilities, but also anxious to ensure forks remains a safe place for the family encouraged them to tread lightly, but also to be unafraid to come forward with their own non vampiric abilities.
Despite the uncertainty she still held for the day, she felt more confident things would still work out by night's end.
The following day upon her arrival in the schools parking lot she was greeted with another vision of Bella and Edward this one was of the two racing each other along the side of a stream, then her eyes fell to Adam Swan and she was accosted with the same visions she had before his coma, well almost the same the blood was splattered differently and held a darker shade, and the bed frame was more worn down as the fingers of the sleek inhuman hand seemed to wear it down.
Alice was surprised yet again when Jasper claimed to some degree he was affecting their emotions. When people were in proximity when he was sitting in the cafeteria at lunch he seemed to cause a spike in fear to go up in those around him, and that wasn’t just due to typical emotional changes.
It had a pretty outwardly noticeable effect there were several students who initially had the intent to welcome him back to school and wish him well, but suddenly changed their mind, and for the few that stuck through with the intent to give greet him and bid him well it turned into a much more muted welcome back compared to the more enthused nature that was initially envisioned. Jasper eyed the whole thing with a keen interest. Commenting on it himself in a whisper.
"not sure if he's an empath but he's definitely being affected by the odd treatment he's receiving."
"You said you just noticed he was affecting others' emotions today, you sure he wasn't causing similar effects during his time at the hospital or before his coma?"
"That would be correct Alice. I was eyeing the very table he was at and got a read often, given what you said about him and Bella, it's very much a new thing"
"He seemed to be in a lot of pain his first couple days here Edward mentioned the same thing happened when Carlisle first came in his room after he woke up as well" Alice mentioned.
"Perhaps he could be a fellow Empath, and maybe his inferior human state is causing it to cause him alot more issues than it does himself. Though I have a feeling it's not that exactly"
"He already exhibits mental shield abilities and the ability to influence emotions, you think there's more to it than that?"
Two powers seemed like a lot, she knew of similar abilities cropping up amongst the Volturi Aro's ability, compared to Edwards held some similarities in the ability to read others' thoughts though Aros was no doubt a greater form of Edwards given he obtained every thought, and also had the option to not read others thoughts, unlike Edward who only got the immediate thoughts of others, and did not have the luxury to turn it off. Jasper has an ability similar to Aro's late sister Didyme if accounts of her were to be believed. Both Alice, Edward, and even Carlisle made the assumption that Adam had an Ability that expanded on Charlies and Bellas, similar to how Jasper's Empathic capabilities were an expansion of Didyme's.
Though given the sudden case of likely unintentional emotional manipulation of those who drew near him, it seemed like there was more to this. Though Jasper himself seemed skeptical of it only being that.
Jasper must've realized she was in her own thoughts for a moment as he did not start speaking again until now.
"It's not that, I just don't think he can feel others' emotions... sometimes going on and he's definitely causing some passive effect on people around him today. Though the way he'd interact with people both before and now. Despite the clear emotional changes he doesn't seem to be reacting to that like an empath. He's not taking in their feelings and emotions he's just being affected by the sudden change in their outward behavior. "
Alice thought about Jaspers's words during her own classes. Could it be some one-sided empathic ability that only affected others and not himself, some twisted combination of Jaspers's abilities and Janes? Would more come up? If the emotional capabilities just appeared. It seemed like a lot for a simple human to have even if it was indeed possible for non-vampires to have abilities. Like them.
She saw another vision flash of the boy going to the library and confiding in another student again. She was in the middle of Physics but she knew if she waited till the class ended it'd be too late. She hoped that her vision was correct this time as she quickly ran to get Jaspers's attention and the two went toward the library.
Notes:
A.N. Well Back again I was debating on scraping this for a rewrite but decided to continue. This story will be my go to when I want something less research intensive. Despite that I hope Alice and Jasper came across in an accurate light. I feel my writing has improved quite a bit since I initially began writing this so I do plan to go back to the begining and rewrite the earlier chapters. Though for now I plan to continue this at a more frequent rate. If people are not digging this story for any reason and wanna read some of my more recent writing, which is quite a big improvement and more well thought out.
I suggest checking out my Elden ring/Asoiaf crossover The Inbetweens of Roses, a Trout, and Stag.
I also recommend my Asoiaf/Nier crossover A Song of Bards and Maso.
I have some more recent One Chapter fics on my FFN and Ao3 profile as well that may pick up peoples interest.
Hope everyone enjoyed the chapter and the new POV. Reviews and Comments appreciated.
Chapter 7: Respite
Chapter Text
As the phone rang, Jacob answered on the other end. "Hey man, how you feeling?" he asked.
"I'm doing alright," Adam replied. "I just got out of the hospital today."
Jacob let out a relieved sigh. "Thank goodness," he said. "I was worried about you, man. What happened?"
Adam explained the situation to Jacob, leaving out the details about his strange dreams and his research on REM sleep. "I just need to get away for a bit," he said. "Do you think I could crash at your place tonight?"
"Of course, man," Jacob replied. "You're always welcome at my place. I'll make some dinner, we can watch a movie, just hang out."
Adam smiled. "Thanks, Jacob. I really appreciate it."
"No problem, man," Jacob said. "I'll see you in a bit."
Adam hung up the phone and took a deep breath. He felt a sense of relief knowing that he could escape to the rez for a little while. Maybe being around nature and his friends would help him clear his mind and figure things out.
He packed a bag with some clothes and essentials, making sure to grab his laptop and some books on dreams and sleep that he had found during his research. He didn't want to give up on trying to figure out what was happening to him.
As he snuck out of his house and made his way to Jacob's, he couldn't help but feel like he was running away from something. But for now, he just needed some peace and quiet, and some time away from his confusing and unsettling reality.
Adam waited until it was dark outside, careful to not make any noise as he gathered his things. He didn't want to risk waking up his dad or sister or anyone else in the houses nearby. He grabbed a small backpack with some essentials - a water bottle, a flashlight, and some snacks. He also made sure to bring a warm jacket since it was a bit chilly outside.
Once he had everything he needed, he made his way out of his bedroom window and onto the roof. He carefully climbed down the trellis, making sure not to slip or make any loud noises he did so with surprising ease. Once he was on the ground, he checked his phone for the time. It was almost 10 pm.
He started walking towards the edge of town where Jacob would meet him. It was a bit of a hike, but Adam didn't mind. He welcomed the chance to stretch his legs and clear his mind.
As he walked, he noticed how quiet it was. There were no cars on the road, no people walking around. It was as if the town had gone to sleep and he was the only one awake. The only sounds were his footsteps and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.
After about half an hour of walking, he saw Jacob's car approaching from the distance. He waited on the side of the road, trying to blend in with the shadows. As the car got closer, he could see Jacob's face in the headlights. He gave him a nod and got into the passenger seat.
"Hey man, thanks for picking me up," Adam said.
"No problem, bro," Jacob replied. "What's going on? Why'd you need to sneak out like this?"
Adam hesitated for a moment before replying, "I just needed to get away for a bit. Clear my head."
Jacob nodded understandingly, his tired but eager features showing that he was willing to go along with whatever Adam needed. "I get it," he said, his voice rough with fatigue. "Sometimes you just need to escape for a bit. Where do you want to go?"
Adam shifted nervously, feeling grateful for Jacob's understanding. "It's up to you Jacob," he said, "I was thinking the Rez. It's been awhile since I've been there."
"The Rez is no problem," Jacob replied, his tone brightening a bit. "I think some folks would love to see ya again there."
"Ah, so Seth and Leah are still around," Adam inquired.
"Ey, it's a little complicated," Jacob admitted, scratching his head. "But Seth's only a bit older than me. Course he's still around."
"Yeah, of course," Adam said, feeling a bit foolish for asking such an obvious question. "But things change over time, you know?"
"Well, La Push really hasn't... not much anyways," Jacob said, his voice trailing off as if lost in thought. "Well, c'mon Swan, get your ass in here," he said, opening the door of his beat-up truck and gesturing for Adam to climb in.
Jacob nodded, a tired but eager expression on his face as he gestured for Adam to get into his vehicle. It was a rusty red Ford Tempo, with mud caked on the wheels and scratches on the doors from years of use. The interior was just as well-loved, with a faint smell of old leather and pine air freshener.
As Adam climbed in, he couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over him. It had been so long since he had been on the rez, and he was looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.
Jacob started up the engine, the roar of the old truck filling the night air. They drove down the dark and winding road, surrounded by towering trees and the occasional glimmer of moonlight filtering through the branches.
After a while, they arrived at the rez, and Jacob pulled into a small clearing where a few other cars were parked. Adam could see the faint glow of a bonfire in the distance, and the sound of laughter and chatter filled the air.
Jacob turned to him and smiled, "Here we are, home sweet home."
As they approached the bonfire, the sounds of laughter and chatter grew louder. One of the kids turned around and noticed Jacob, immediately jumping up and eagerly walking over. Adam couldn't help but notice the excitement on the young boy's face as he approached them.
"Seth!" Jacob called out, grinning from ear to ear.
Seth's face lit up at the sight of Jacob, his grin matching his. "Jake! Didn't think you'd be coming, man!"
Adam watched as the two embraced each other in a tight hug, patting each other's backs roughly in greeting. After a few moments, Jacob turned to Adam.
"Seth, this is Adam. We've known each other since we were kids," he mock introduced, turning back to Seth.
Adam rolled his eyes. At Jacobs reintroduction to Seth. Jacob was no doubt a bit jilted he was gone for so long, without much contact. Besides a few letters here and there.
Seth turned his attention to Adam, a look of recognition dawning on his face. "Adam Swan! Damn, where have you been all these years?"
Adam chuckled, returning Seth's friendly greeting with a handshake. "Just been out by my mom for the past few years, highschool was killer and havn't had time to visit"
Seth nodded, still grinning. "Yeah, yeah, I get it. But you gotta come by more often, man. It's always good to see some familiar faces around here."
Jacob roughly grabbed adams shoulder "Well thankfully Adams stuck here for awhile, first order of business is to get him to grow his hair out again"
The bonfire crackled in the background as the trio continued their conversation, the sound of the waves crashing on the shore in the distance. Seth's smile faded slightly as he mentioned Adam's hair, but he quickly regained his composure, focusing on their friendship.
Adam raised an eyebrow at Jacob's comment, "Grow my hair out again? I don't think I can handle the 'surfer dude' look anymore."
Seth let out a chuckle, "Yeah, I remember those days. You used to come out here with your board try to surf and show off for all the girls."
Adam chuckled awkwardly, "And you were always there to remind me that I wasn't as cool as I thought."
Jacob cleared his throat, "Alright, alright, let's not get too nostalgic here. We're all adults now."
Seth nodded in agreement before turning to Adam, "So, what brings you back to the rez?"
Adam took a sip of his drink, "Just needed a break from the city, you know? It's been a while since I've been back here, and I wanted to catch up with some old friends."
Seth nodded, "Well, you came to the right place. The rez may not have changed much, but the people sure have."
As they continued to chat, Adam noticed the warmth of the fire and the sound of the waves slowly easing his tension. It was good to be back, even if just for a little while.
As they continued catching up, another member of the reservation, Embry, approached the group. "Hey guys, what's up?" he asked, greeting everyone with a smile.
Jacob turned to Embry, introducing him to Adam. "Embry, this is my friend Adam. We go way back."
Embry shook Adam's hand warmly. "Good to meet you, man. You visiting La Push?"
"Yeah, just for a little while," Adam replied. "It's been too long since I've been back."
As Embry finished the handshake to, he still wore a smile, but it seemed forced and fake. Adam couldn't help but feel a sudden unease. Embry's demeanor had changed, and it was almost as if something else had taken over him.
Embry's tone turned chilly as he began making subtle jabs at Adam's appearance and lifestyle choices. "So, you're living in the city now, huh? Must be nice, living the high life while the rest of us are stuck here in La Push." Embry's words were laced with bitterness, and Adam could sense a hint of resentment in his voice.
Adam tried to brush it off, thinking that maybe Embry was just having a bad day
"I mean i've always lived in the town… when I came here besides the handful of times i've stayed over night by Jacob's house."
Jacob noticed the tension building and tried to lighten the mood. "Hey, come on, Embry. Don't be like that. We're all just catching up here."
Adam felt a headache starting to flare up, and he tried to change the subject. "So, Embry, what have you been up to lately?" he asked, hoping to redirect the conversation.
But Embry just sneered. "Oh, you know, just living the dream here in La Push," he replied sarcastically. "Unlike you, I don't need to run off to the big city to find happiness."
Adam could feel his frustration rising, but he tried to stay calm. "Hey, man, I'm not saying one way of life is better than the other. I'm just here to catch up with some old friends."
Embry snorted. "Yeah, right. You don't belong here, Adam. You never have."
Jacob intervened again as tensions seemed to just continue to rise. "Alright, Embry, that's enough. Let's just enjoy the bonfire and catch up, okay?"
But Embry just shrugged him off and turned to leave. "Yeah, whatever," he muttered before disappearing into the crowd.
Adam furrowed his brows, confused by Embry's sudden change in demeanor. "What's that about? I thought we were all cool here," he said, gesturing to the rest of the group.
"Sam Uley!”Seth spat out the name, his expression turning sour.
Jacob shot Seth a warning look, but it was too late. Seth was already worked up. "What, Jake? You gonna defend that asshole too?" he said, his voice rising.
Jacob sighed, "No one's defending anyone, Seth. We just don't need to bring up old drama."
But Seth wasn't having it. "Sam broke my sister's heart for no reason, Jake. You can shut the hell up," he said, his fists clenched.
Adam could feel the tension in the air, and he wondered if he had unwittingly stumbled into a feud. "What happened with Sam and your sister?" he asked, trying to diffuse the situation.
Jacob hesitated for a moment, looking uncomfortable. "It's a long story," he finally said, rubbing the back of his neck.
But Adam pressed on, "I've got time."
Jacob let out a sigh before reluctantly launching into the story. He explained that Sam and Seth's sister, Leah, had been dating for a few months when suddenly Sam had broken things off with no explanation. Leah had been devastated and had retreated into herself, refusing to talk to anyone about what had happened.
As Jacob spoke, Adam could see the hurt and anger in Seth's eyes. It was clear that the wound was still fresh, but he couldn't help but wonder if Embry's strange behavior was somehow related to this old drama.
Though it seemed like a sore topic, though anyone who managed to hurt Leah well was a dick plain and simple, and was surely in for a nightmare if the fear she caused, not only him and Jacob but her own brother in their youth was any indication.
Adam turned to Jacob, his expression curious. "I didn't know Leah was involved with Anyone if im honest. Is she okay?"
Jacob sighed heavily, his expression pained. "She's been through a lot, man. Sam broke her heart, and she's been struggling to move on ever since."
Adam felt a pang of sadness in his chest. He had always been fond of Leah, and it hurt him to think that she was going through such a difficult time. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
Jacob shook his head. "I wish there was, but Leah's just gotta work through it on her own. She's a tough girl, though. She'll get through it eventually."
Adam listened to Jacob's story, feeling a mix of sadness and anger at what had happened to Leah. As he was about to say something, a sudden wave of nausea hit him, and he gripped his head in pain. Dark images flooded his mind, of a wolf ripping into flesh with blood coating its fur. Howls filled the air, and other wolves answered in chorus. The wolf's fur seemed to be alive, consuming the flesh of its prey as it tore through them with savage abandon. The scene was so vivid, it was as if he was watching it happen right in front of him.
But the horror didn't stop there. As the wolf continued to devour its victim, patches of fur began to burst out of the human's skin, almost like it was trying to consume them from the inside out. The sight was grotesque and made Adam's stomach churn.
The howls of the wolves continued, growing louder and more frenzied with each passing moment. It was as if they were calling to something, something dark and primal that lurked just beyond the edge of his vision.
Adam's grip on his head tightened as the vision finally faded, leaving him feeling disoriented and shaken. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, but the image lingered in his mind like a nightmare he couldn't shake.
He tried to shake the vision off, but the pain only intensified. He heard someone calling his name, but the sound seemed distant and muffled. The next thing he knew, he was lying on the ground, with Jacob and Seth hovering over him.
"Adam, are you okay? What happened?" Jacob asked, concern etched on his face.
Adam groaned, trying to sit up. "I don't know, I just had this… I'm fine, just a little lightheaded," he replied, trying to play it off.
But Jacob could sense something deeper was going on. "That didn't look like just a little lightheadedness, Adam. Are you sure you're okay?"
Adam shifted uncomfortably, not wanting to share his dark vision with them. "I don't know, it was just a weird feeling. Maybe I just need some fresh air."
Seth and Jacob exchanged concerned glances, but decided not to press the matter any further. "Alright, if you need anything, just let us know," Seth said, patting Adam on the back.
Adam nodded, grateful for their concern, but still feeling uneasy about the vision. He couldn't shake the feeling that it was somehow connected to the Rez, But he didn't want to alarm his friends and risk going back to the hospital or worse, so he kept his thoughts to himself. What was this another new development so soon? Why can he not just get a break.
Seth noticed Adam's uneasy expression and gently nudged him on the shoulder. "Hey man, you okay?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.
Adam took a deep breath and shook his head, "Yeah, I'm good. Just got lost in my thoughts for a bit there."
Seth gave him a reassuring pat on the back, "I know how you feel. Whenever I get too caught up in my head, I like to focus on something peaceful to get my mind off things. Maybe you should try that."
Adam smiled, appreciative of Seth's efforts to cheer him up. "Thanks man, I'll give it a shot."
He remained fairly quiet the rest of the night, but he did take Seth's advice just enjoying the happy atmosphere and the warmth of the fire that danced below the moonlight
"Did it work?" Seth asked, before he headed home
Adam nodded, trying to put on a brave face. "Yeah, I'm good. Now"
As Seth headed off into the night, Adam made his way over to Jacob's house. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep, not after the vision he had just experienced. The last time he had slept, he had ended up in a five-day coma, and he didn't want to risk it happening again.
But as he settled in for the night, he couldn't shake the feeling of dread that was creeping up on him. The howls of the wolves in his vision still echoed in his mind, and he couldn't help but wonder what it all meant.
Engaging in the hourly spurts of rest throughout the night was not the most fulfilling, but he supposed it was better than nothing, certainly better than ending up in another coma, then came his 5th hour of sleep.
Adam jolted awake to the sound of Billy Black's booming voice. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and tried to focus on what was happening. Billy was demanding that Jacob talk to Charlie and apologize for something, but Adam wasn't sure what. Jacob looked just as confused as he was.
After a few minutes of back and forth, Billy handed the phone to Adam. It was Charlie on the other end, and he sounded angry. "Adam, what the hell is going on? Your mother is beside herself with worry when she called to talk with you, And I check your room and you are not there. You were in a coma just yesterday, and now Billy's calling me telling me you're out the past day in a half with Jacob?"
Adam groaned inwardly. He had failed to tell either of his parents about his plans to stay over at Jacob's. He quickly tried to explain the situation to Charlie, telling him about the bonfire and the vision he had, but Charlie wasn't having it.
"You need to take better care of yourself, Adam. You can't be running around all night after what happened. I want you to come home right now and rest."
Adam nodded, even though Charlie couldn't see him. He could tell that Charlie was only upset because he cared about him. Though the idea of rest terrified him… he lost five days of his life, and now it seems whatever is going on with him has gotten worse. What was that terrible vision last night.
"I'm sorry, Charlie. I didn't mean to worry you," Adam replied. "I just didn't want to sleep and miss school today. I need to get back into my routine."
Charlie let out an exasperated sigh. "Adam, you were in a coma yesterday. You need to take it easy and let your body recover."
"I know, but I feel fine now. I just want to see how a day back at school is," Adam argued, hoping to convince Charlie to let him go.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before Charlie finally spoke. "Fine, but I'm going to call the school and let them know what's going on. And if you start feeling even slightly off, you call me immediately."
Adam let out a sigh of relief. "Thanks, Charlie. I won't let you down."
Jacob looked guilty as he sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm sorry, man. I didn't think about how this would affect you."
Adam sighed. "It's fine. I just need to be more careful. Was my idea anyway jacob if you remember."
Jacob sighed, clearly annoyed at Adam's response. "Yeah! Thanks a lot, man. You know my dad's gonna ground me for the next month now," he grumbled.
The drive went quiet for awhile after that though as they got closer to the highschool, Adam decided to voice something not entirely sure of himself. "Jacob, have you ever felt trapped in dream? Does your tribe have anything like that in their legends?, Jacob's annoyance faded, replaced by curiosity. "Not really," he said, shaking his head. "Some tribes have stories about that kind of thing, but it's not really something we focus on in the Quileute tribe as far as I know."
Adam nodded slowly. "Well, I don't know if it was just a dream, but...that's what my coma felt like. Like I was trapped in a dream, unable to wake up." He shuddered at the memory.
Jacob frowned in concern. "That sounds pretty rough, man. But I don't really know what to tell you. I mean, I'm not exactly an expert on this kind of thing."
Adam looked at him earnestly. "I just don't want to be trapped in a dream again, you know? Do you have any advice or anything?"
Jacob thought for a moment before responding. "Well, I don't know if this will help, but maybe try focusing on something in the real world. Like, really focusing on it. Maybe it'll help ground you and keep you from slipping too far into your dreams."
Adam considered Jacob's advice, feeling a glimmer of hope. "Thanks, man. I'll definitely try that."
Jacob sent a smile Adam's way at that and the quiet returned briefly as they pulled into the parking lot of the school, many eyes seemed to turn towards jacobs car, whether it was at Jacob himself, or Adam due to the coma situation he couldn't say he'd wager it was more the latter than the former though. Which made a certain more relatable teenage dread build within him. He was readying himself to say goodbye to jacob. As he parked. Though Jacob held up his hand,
"Wait a minute man I got something for you,Just hold onto it, maybe it'll help ground you and remind you that you're awake." He then reached into his bag and pulled out a small, intricately woven cedar rose. "This is a symbol of our tribe. My mother made it for me when I was younger, and she said it would bring balance to our lives after she passed."
Adam took the cedar rose and examined it closely. It was beautiful, with delicate petals and a sweet, woody scent. "Thank you, Jacob," he said, his voice filled with gratitude. "I'll make sure to take good care of it."
Jacob chuckled. "Don't thank me yet. I'm not giving it to you, I'm loaning it to you. And you better bring it back in one piece."
Adam smiled, understanding the significance of the gesture. Even if the cedar rose didn't do anything for him, the fact that Jacob was willing to lend him something so precious spoke volumes about their friendship.
As they arrived at the school, Jacob pulled over and Adam got out of the car. "Good luck today, man," Jacob said, giving him a reassuring pat on the back. "And remember, if you start feeling like you're trapped in a dream again, just focus on that cedar rose. It might help ground you."
Adam nodded, feeling more at ease than he had in days. "Thanks, Jacob. I'll see you later."
Jacob waved goodbye and drove off, leaving Adam alone to face the challenges of the day ahead.
A.N. This was originally gonna cover both the Rez visit, and Adam's perspective of his school day before alice/jasper intervene, but opted for just the rez visit because the chapter was getting long, and this way we will get Adam's perspective as well as the actual conversation with alice, and who knows what else. The cosmos are yearning for more content it seems.
So you may have noticed some events that arn't talked about or shown until the 2nd book/ movie are shown here wonder why that is? Also the car jacob is driving is actually Billy's car in the book I went this route because I knew he wouldn't have the car he has in canon yet, so figured he'd borrow his dads.
Hope everyone enjoys this update, things will be gradually picking up the pace from here.
Chapter 8: I saw the signs
Chapter Text
Adam stood at the entrance of Forks High School, his heart pounding as he watched students stream through the doors. He absentmindedly adjusted the strap of his backpack well taking a much needed breath. Everything felt off, like the world around him was subtly shifting, just out of sync.
As he finally forced himself to walk inside, the usual chatter and laughter of students seemed distant, muffled. His eyes darted around, catching glimpses of the strange lines that connected people—some bright, others dim, but all pulsing with a rhythm that made his temples throb.
He tried to focus on the normalcy of school life, but the lines kept drawing his attention, flickering and twisting in ways that made his stomach churn. When he approached his locker, he noticed a couple of students whispering nearby. As soon as he got close, they abruptly stopped talking, glancing at him with expressions that were a mix of curiosity and something else—fear, maybe?
Adam clenched his jaw, trying to ignore the tightness in his chest. They’re just being weird, he told himself. It’s not about you. But as he turned down the hall toward his first class, he couldn’t shake the feeling that everyone’s eyes were on him, scrutinizing his every move.
In history class, he spotted an old friend, Mike, sitting near the back. Relieved to see a familiar face, Adam decided to make an effort to reconnect.
“Hey, Mike,” Adam greeted, sliding into the seat beside him. “How’s it going?”
Mike looked up, startled, and for a brief moment, his eyes widened in what could only be described as discomfort. He quickly masked it with a tight smile. “Oh, hey, Adam… uh, things are good. You?”
“Been better,” Adam admitted, hoping to steer the conversation into something normal. “Just trying to get back into the groove, you know?”
Mike nodded absently, already turning his attention back to his notebook. “Yeah… for sure.” His tone was polite but distant, like he was eager to end the conversation.
Adam’s heart sank as Mike busied himself with his notes, clearly uninterested in continuing the discussion. Adam felt the familiar sting of rejection, the gnawing doubt that he didn’t belong, that something about him was inherently wrong.
The rest of the class passed in a blur, and Adam found himself increasingly distracted by the growing pain in his head. The lines around his classmates seemed to twist tighter, and whenever he tried to focus on them, his vision blurred and the headache intensified.
By the time his next class rolled around, Adam’s head was pounding, and he decided to uncharacteristically skip, opting for the relative peace of the library instead. The moment he stepped through the doors, the noise of the school was muted, replaced by the soft rustle of pages and the faint hum of the air conditioning. He felt a small measure of relief, but it was short-lived.
As Adam wandered between the shelves, trying to find a quiet corner, he spotted Alice and Jasper Cullen seated at a table in the back. They were alone, but it seemed like they were expecting someone else. He hesitated, a wave of apprehension washing over him. The lines connecting Alice and Jasper to each other were strong, pulsating with an energy that seemed even more clear..
Why are they here? What do they want? he wondered, but he couldn’t turn away. Something compelled him to approach, as if the lines themselves were tugging him toward them.
Alice looked up as he neared, her expression warm and inviting, though Adam sensed a depth behind her eyes that he couldn’t quite place. Jasper offered a nod of acknowledgment, his face calm, almost serene, but there was an intensity in his gaze that made Adam’s skin prickle.
“Hi, Adam,” Alice said with a gentle smile. “Would you like to join us?”
Adam hesitated, glancing around the library, half expecting someone to be watching him. But the other students seemed absorbed in their own work, oblivious to his presence. He turned back to Alice and Jasper, noticing that they seemed to be the only ones who weren’t avoiding him today.
“Sure,” Adam finally replied, his voice barely above a whisper. He pulled out a chair and sat down, the weight of their combined gazes making him shift uncomfortably.
Alice’s smile brightened, and she glanced at Jasper before turning her attention back to Adam. “How’s your day going so far?” she asked casually.
Adam shrugged, trying to act like everything was fine. “It’s… alright, I guess. Just getting back into the swing of things.”
Alice leaned forward in her chair, eyes studying Adam carefully. “You missed a lot in Econ while you were out,” she said, her tone light. “But I’m sure you’ll catch up quickly.”
“Yeah, it’s not too bad,” Adam replied, feeling a little more at ease with the small talk. “I’ve been going over the notes, and it seems pretty straightforward.”
Alice nodded, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “Mr. Taylor’s class can be a bit dry, but you didn’t miss anything too exciting.”
Adam managed a small smile, appreciating the normalcy of the conversation. It felt good, for a moment, to just talk about something mundane. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this meeting, something beneath the surface that Alice and Jasper weren’t saying.
“So… how about you two?” Adam asked, trying to keep the conversation going. “Anything interesting happen while I was gone?”
Alice and Jasper exchanged a quick glance, and Adam noticed a brief flicker of something in their eyes—concern, maybe? But before he could dwell on it, Alice spoke up.
“Not much,” she said lightly, “but we were curious about you, Adam. How are you really feeling?”
Adam blinked, taken aback by the sudden shift in the conversation. He hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. Why are they asking me this? A part of him was tempted to brush it off, but their gazes were so intent, so sincere, that he found himself wavering.
“I’m… okay,” he said slowly. “Just trying to figure some things out.”
Jasper leaned forward slightly, his gaze intense but not unkind. “We’ve noticed some things,” he said carefully. “About you, Adam. Things that are… unusual.”
Adam’s mind raced as Jasper’s words hung in the air, thick with implication. His initial instinct was to withdraw, to shield himself from whatever scrutiny the Cullens were subjecting him to. Unusual? He could feel his pulse quicken, his palms beginning to sweat. What exactly do they know?
For a moment, the silence stretched between them, heavy and uncomfortable. Adam’s thoughts spiraled as he weighed his options. He hadn’t asked for any of this—hadn’t wanted these strange abilities, the nightmares, or the isolation that seemed to grow worse with each passing day. And now, here he was, confronted by two people who, for reasons he couldn’t quite fathom, seemed to have taken an unusual interest in him.
His gaze looked between Alice and Jasper, searching for any sign of deception or troubling motives. Alice’s expression was open, it was disarming. Yet his head produced manifested a sharp pain like a dagger in his mind. Jasper, on the other hand, just produced a dull throb. His calm, composed exterior was almost too perfect, as if it were a carefully maintained facade. But it was his eyes— intense, piercing eyes—that unnerved Adam the most. They seemed to see right to his very core.
“What do you mean?” Adam finally asked, his voice betraying a hint of the anxiety simmering beneath the surface.
Alice was the first to respond, her tone measured and calm. “We’ve noticed that things have been different for you since you came to school. And not just the normal kind of different—something more.” She paused, her gaze softening as if to reassure him. “We know it’s probably been overwhelming.”
Adam swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making it difficult to speak. Overwhelming? That was putting it mildly. The lines, the visions, the debilitating headaches—it was more than overwhelming. It was suffocating. He could barely make sense of his own thoughts, let alone figure out why the Cullens were suddenly so interested in him.
His paranoia flared up again, making him question everything. What if this is a trap? What if they’re just trying to get information out of me? The thought made him want to bolt, to get up and leave before they could dig any deeper. But something held him in place, a strange, inexplicable pull that kept him rooted to his seat.
Sensing his hesitation, Alice leaned in slightly, her voice dropping to a more sincere, almost pleading tone. “Adam, you’re not alone in this. Whatever you’re dealing with, we are able to help. But we can’t do that unless you trust us—at least a little.”
Trust. The word echoed in Adam’s mind, making him wince. Trust was something he hadn’t felt in a long time, not since his world had been turned upside down by these abilities he didn’t understand. The Cullens were offering him a lifeline; could he really afford to take it? Could he afford not?
His thoughts were a chaotic jumble as he considered his next move. Alice and Jasper’s presence had always been a source of discomfort for him, triggering some of the worst migraines he’d ever experienced. But, here they were now, offering to help share their own experiences with him. It felt surreal, like something out of one of his nightmares—only this time, he was awake, and the danger felt all too real.
“Why do you care?” Adam asked, his voice laced with suspicion. “Why does it matter to you what’s happening to me?”
Jasper exchanged a glance with Alice before answering. “Because we’ve been where you are, in a way,” he said quietly. “We know what it’s like to have abilities you can’t control, that you don’t understand. It can be terrifying, isolating. But you don’t have to go through it alone.”
Adam absorbed Jasper’s words, feeling a mix of emotions churning in his chest—relief, fear, and a lingering sense of doubt. They were saying everything right, but it still felt too good to be true. And yet, there was something about the way they spoke, the way they seemed to genuinely understand his struggle, that made him want to believe.
But when Alice spoke again, her words sent a fresh wave of unease through him. “I can see the future,” she said, her tone calm but serious. “Or, at least, possible futures.”
Adam stiffened at her words, his skepticism flaring. See the future? It sounded absurd, something out of a fantasy novel. But the look in Alice’s eyes was dead serious, and it made his skin crawl. If she could really see the future, what did that mean for him? Could she have seen something about him—something he hadn’t even realized yet?
Before he could dwell too much on that unsettling thought, Jasper spoke up. “And I can sense and influence emotions.”
Adam’s breath caught in his throat, his pulse quickening as a sudden dread washed over him. Influence emotions? The idea sent a chill down his spine, and he couldn’t help but wonder: Has he been doing that this whole time? He hadn’t noticed anything obvious, but the mere possibility made his stomach churn. What if these feelings of trust, this strange calm I’m feeling—what if it’s all because of him?
His thoughts spiraled as he began to question everything—his own emotions, his reactions, even his decision to sit down and talk to them in the first place. Had any of it been his choice, or had Jasper manipulated him from the start? The idea made his skin prickle with anxiety, his heart pounding louder in his chest.
Sensing his growing discomfort, Jasper held up a hand, his voice steady. “I haven’t used it on you, Adam. Not today.”
Adam wasn’t sure if he believed him, but there was something in Jasper’s tone that made him want to believe it was true. Still, the knowledge of Jasper’s ability lingered. Not Today? Opposed to not never c an I even trust myself?
He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. I’ll just tell them a little, he decided. Just enough to see how they react. I can always pull back if it feels wrong.
“I see… connections,” Adam finally admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “Between people. Lines that show how they’re connected, emotionally or… physically, I guess.”
Alice’s eyes widened slightly, but she quickly composed herself, her smile returning as if trying to reassure Adam through her expression alone. Jasper, however, seemed more troubled, his brow furrowing deeply as if he was already calculating potential risks or outcomes.
“Anything else?” Jasper asked, his voice calm but with a subtle undercurrent of tension, his eyes narrowing slightly as if bracing himself for whatever Adam might reveal next.
Adam hesitated, his paranoia flaring up once more. Should I really tell them more? He considered keeping the rest to himself, but something in their expressions—Jasper’s concern, Alice’s empathy—pushed him to share just a little more.
“Sometimes I can sense things about people… im not entirely sure what… just something more, but it gives me these awful headaches especially when i first notice it,” he added, his tone cautious.
Alice and Jasper exchanged another look, one that Adam couldn’t quite read. “That’s… significant,” Alice murmured, her voice thoughtful. “There’s more to this than we realized.”
Adam’s heart began to race again. “What do you mean? What’s wrong with me?”
“There’s nothing wrong with you,” Jasper said quickly, his tone soothing but firm. “It’s just… your abilities are more complex than we expected. It’s important that you understand them, so you can control them. We can help with that.”
Adam nodded slowly, though his mind was buzzing with unanswered questions. Why are they so concerned? What aren’t they telling me? The conversation had only deepened the mystery surrounding his powers, and the unease that had settled in his chest refused to go away.
Alice seemed to sense his anxiety, her smile softening. “We’ll help you, Adam. You’re not alone in this.”
But despite her kind words, Adam couldn’t shake the feeling that he was walking along broken glass. The Cullens had their own secrets—secrets that could be related to his own troubles. He had revealed some of his abilities, but he hadn’t told them everything and he had no plans to.
He looked at Alice and Jasper, trying to gauge their intentions. They seemed sincere, but he couldn’t afford to take anything at face value. Not with all the unease around him. “I appreciate your offer to help,” he said slowly, trying to consider his next words. “But I need time to process all of this.”
“Of course,” Alice said, her tone understanding. “Take all the time you need. We’re here if you ever want to talk, or if you need anything at all.”
Adam gave a small nod, feeling the weight of their words. They were giving him space, but he knew this wasn’t the end of the conversation. Not by a long shot. The tension between them hung in the air, unspoken but palpable. As much as he wanted to believe that they had his best interests at heart, a part of him couldn’t shake the suspicion that there was more at play—something that neither of them were ready to reveal.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Adam said, standing up from the table. “Thanks… for listening.”
Jasper nodded, his expression unreadable. “We’re here for you, Adam. Don’t forget that.”
Adam turned to leave, but before he walked away, Alice spoke again, her voice soft but carrying a weight that made him pause. “Be careful, Adam. And trust your instincts. They’ll guide you through this.”
He didn’t respond, just gave a brief nod before heading out of the library.
Trust your instincts, he repeated in his mind. But what if my instincts are wrong?
As the conversation with Alice and Jasper drew to a close, Adam left the library with a heavy heart. The unexpected conversation doing little to ease his mind. If anything, it had only added to the growing sense of unease that had been gnawing at him since his return to Forks High. He knew he should focus on his next class, but the words of the Cullens lingered in his thoughts making concentration near impossible..
The rest of the day felt like a blur. In each class, Adam couldn’t help but notice the way his classmates reacted to him—furtive glances, whispered comments, and an unmistakable tension that seemed to fill the room whenever he entered. The lines connecting them were more erratic now, flickering in and out of his vision, and every time he tried to focus on them, his headache worsened.
He tried to shake off the growing paranoia, telling himself that he was imagining things, that it wasn’t as bad as it seemed. But as the day wore on, it became harder to convince himself. The sense of isolation was suffocating, and he felt like a stranger in his own school.
By the time lunch rolled around, Adam’s nerves were frayed. He walked into the cafeteria, scanning the familiar faces at the tables. For a brief moment, he considered sitting alone, but old habits died hard. He spotted Bella and Angela at their usual spot, with Jessica, Mike, and Eric sitting nearby. Deciding to join them, he made his way over, hoping for a semblance of normalcy.
But as soon as he approached, something shifted in the air. The conversation at the table abruptly died, and Adam felt every eye on him as he pulled out a chair. The silence was deafening, and his chest tightened with anxiety. He sat down, trying to ignore the palpable tension.
The group exchanged uneasy glances, and then, one by one, they started to gather their things. Jessica was the first to stand, glancing between Adam and the others before motioning for them to follow her to another table. Mike and Eric hesitated for a moment, but eventually, they complied, shooting Adam awkward looks as they moved away.
Adam sat frozen, his heart sinking. They are leaving because of him it had to be the case but why? Was it his powers? Or did the cullens promise every classmate a volvo if they treated him like edward scissorhands?
Only Bella and Angela remained, their expressions a mixture of shock and concern. Bella’s eyes narrowed as she watched Jessica motion for them to join her at the other table. Her jaw clenched, and Adam could see the anger bubbling just beneath the surface.
“Bella, Angela, come on!” Jessica called out, her voice strained. “There’s more room over here.”
Angela shifted uncomfortably, clearly torn between her friends. “Uh… I think I’ll stay here,” she said quietly, her gaze darting to Adam. “I’m not that hungry anyway.”
Bella’s eyes flashed with fury. “What the hell, Jessica?” she snapped, her voice loud enough to draw the attention of nearby tables. “What’s going on?”
Jessica stiffened, glancing nervously at Mike and Eric for support. “Nothing! It’s just… it’s a little crowded over there.”
“Bullshit,” Bella shot back, her voice trembling with barely contained anger. “You’re all acting like Adam has the plague or something! He was just in a coma, for God’s sake! And this is how you treat him?”
Mike and Eric exchanged awkward glances, clearly uncomfortable with the confrontation. Mike cleared his throat, avoiding Bella’s gaze. “We just… thought it might be better to give him some space, you know? After everything.”
“Space?” Bella repeated incredulously. “He doesn’t need space; he needs his friends! What the hell is wrong with you guys?”
Jessica crossed her arms defensively, her voice rising in pitch. “It’s not like that, Bella. We just… It’s weird, okay? He’s been acting… different.”
Bella’s eyes narrowed further. “Different? How? Because he’s quiet? Because he’s been through something traumatic?”
Eric, clearly trying to diffuse the situation, raised his hands in a placating gesture. “Look, Bella, we’re not trying to be mean. It’s just… people are talking, okay? Everyone’s noticed how weird things have been since Adam came back. We’re just trying to—”
“To what?” Bella cut him off, her voice shaking with anger. “To make him feel even more like an outsider? To make him feel worse than he already does? You’re his friends! You’re supposed to be there for him, not treat him like he’s some kind of freak!”
Adam sat silently through the exchange, his hands clenched into fists under the table. Each word cut deeper than the last, and he felt the familiar burn of humiliation creeping up his neck. The entire cafeteria seemed to be watching the confrontation now, and he wished more than anything that he could disappear.
Jessica’s face flushed with embarrassment, and she glanced around at the onlookers. “That’s not fair, Bella. You don’t know what it’s like. Everyone’s freaked out!”
“I don’t care!” Bella shouted, her voice cracking. “He’s my brother, and he deserves better than this. If you can’t see that, then maybe you’re the ones who need space.”
A heavy silence fell over the table, the tension so thick it was suffocating. Bella stood, glaring at Jessica, Mike, and Eric, daring them to say something else. But they just stood there, shifting awkwardly under the weight of her gaze.
Finally, Jessica huffed, turning on her heel and marching off to the other table, with Mike and Eric reluctantly following. The noise in the cafeteria slowly returned as the other students lost interest in the drama, but the damage was done.
Bella turned back to Adam, her expression softening as she reached out to touch his arm. “I’m so sorry, Adam,” she said quietly, her voice full of regret. “I didn’t know they would act like that.”
Adam shook his head, struggling to find his voice. “It’s… it’s okay,” he managed to say, though the words felt hollow. The truth was, it wasn’t okay. Nothing about this was okay. But what could he do? The isolation he’d felt all day had now been laid bare in front of everyone, and it stung more than he could have imagined.
Angela, who had been quiet throughout the exchange, leaned in slightly, offering him a small, sad smile. “We’re still here, Adam,” she said softly. “You’re not alone.”
He nodded, appreciating the sentiment, but it was for naught. The sense of being an outsider had only grown stronger, and he couldn’t help but wonder how much worse things could get.
After the tense confrontation in the cafeteria, the rest of lunch passed in a haze for Adam. He picked at his food, barely tasting it, while Bella and Angela did their best to keep the conversation light. But the weight of what had just happened lingered, and Adam found himself retreating further into his thoughts.
When the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Bella caught his arm as they stood to leave. “Hey, Adam, can we talk for a minute?” she asked, her voice gentle but firm.
Adam nodded, feeling a pang of guilt as he saw the concern etched on her face. The cafeteria began to empty out, and soon it was just the two of them standing near their table.
Bella led him to a quieter corner of the hallway, away from prying eyes and ears. She turned to face him, her expression serious. “Adam, I know something’s wrong. I can see it in your eyes, and it’s not just because of what happened in the cafeteria. You’ve been… different since you woke up from the coma.”
Adam looked down, the words catching in his throat. He knew Bella wouldn’t let this go easily, but how could he possibly explain what he was going through? The truth was too strange, too unbelievable.
“Bella, I…” He hesitated, searching for the right words. He wanted to tell her everything, to unburden himself of the secrets that were weighing him down. But as much as he trusted her, something held him back. He wasn’t ready—not yet.
“I felt like I was trapped in a dream before the coma,” he finally said, choosing his words carefully. “And ever since I woke up, it’s been harder to sleep. I’m just… trying to make sense of it all.”
Bella’s brow furrowed with concern. “Trapped in a dream?” she echoed, her voice tinged with worry. “That sounds… terrifying.”
Adam nodded, not meeting her eyes. It was terrifying, but not in the way she imagined. The dreams, the visions—those were only part of it. The true horror lay in the way his abilities had begun to warp his perception of reality, and the fear that he was losing control.
“It was,” he admitted quietly. “And it’s made things… complicated. But I’m dealing with it.”
Bella reached out, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “You don’t have to deal with it alone, Adam. I’m here for you, no matter what.”
Adam managed a small smile, grateful for her support, even if he couldn’t bring himself to tell her the full truth. “Thanks, Bella. That means a lot.”
They stood there for a moment in silence, the weight of the conversation hanging between them. Finally, Bella pulled him into a hug, holding him tightly. “We’ll figure this out, okay? You’re my brother, and I’m not going to let you go through this alone.”
Adam returned the embrace, feeling a swell of emotion that he quickly suppressed. “Thanks, Bella,” he murmured. “I appreciate it.”
When they finally pulled apart, Bella gave him a reassuring smile. “We should get to class,” she said, her tone lighter now. “But if you ever want to talk more, you know where to find me.”
“Yeah,” Adam replied, feeling a mix of relief and guilt. He had given her just enough to ease her worries, but the real conversation—the one about his abilities—would have to wait.
As they split off to head to their next classes, Adam couldn’t shake the hopeless feeling inside. Bella’s concern had touched him, but it also reminded him of how disconnected they’ve been from each other.
In economics class, Adam tried to focus on the lesson, but his mind kept drifting back to his conversation with Bella—and to the strange encounter with Alice and Jasper earlier that day. He noticed Alice watching him from across the room, her gaze steady and unreadable. He couldn’t tell what she was thinking, but he had a feeling that their conversation wasn’t over.
When the teacher announced that they would be working in groups for the rest of the period, Adam felt a flicker of apprehension. As the students began to split off into pairs and trios, Alice made a beeline for him, her expression calm but determined.
“Mind if I join you?” she asked, her tone light but leaving little room for refusal.
Adam hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Sure.”
As they settled into their seats, Alice quickly took charge of the assignment, outlining their project with a calm efficiency that Adam couldn’t help but admire. The task was to develop a theoretical plan for managing a small business during an economic crisis—specifically, a hurricane hitting the town where the business was located.
Under different circumstances, Adam might have found the thought exercise fascinating. But today, his mind was too preoccupied with other things—namely, the Cullens and their unsettling interest in him.
Alice seemed to sense his distraction, and she carried most of the conversation, talking through the details of their plan while Adam offered minimal input. He nodded and made occasional comments, but his heart wasn’t in it. His thoughts kept drifting back to the morning’s events, and to the unease that had settled in his gut.
Despite his lack of enthusiasm, they managed to complete the required page and a half well before most of the other groups. As Adam was gathering his things, preparing for the end of class, Alice leaned in slightly, her voice low enough that only he could hear.
“If you’re free after school, you could come by our house,” she suggested, her tone casual but with an undercurrent of seriousness. “I know this has all been… overwhelming. But if you want, Jasper and I can show you what we can do. It might help make things a little less… strange.”
Adam tensed at the invitation, a fresh wave of unease creeping into his thoughts. The idea of going to the Cullens’ house, of seeing their abilities firsthand, was both intriguing and terrifying. Part of him wanted to refuse, to keep his distance and avoid getting any deeper into whatever was happening. But another part of him—the part that was tired of feeling like a freak—was tempted.
Alice seemed to sense his hesitation, and she quickly added, “But it’s completely up to you. If you’re not ready, that’s okay. I just thought it might help you feel better.”
Adam considered her words carefully. He wasn’t entirely sure of the logic behind her offer, but there was something about it that appealed to him. Maybe, if he saw their abilities, he wouldn’t feel so isolated, so different. Maybe it would help him understand his own powers better.
Reluctantly, he nodded. “Okay. I’ll come.”
Alice smiled, a hint of relief in her eyes. “Great. We’ll head over right after school.”
As the bell rang and the students began to file out of the classroom, Adam felt a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. He wasn’t sure what to expect at the Cullens’ house, but he knew one thing: he needed to get a handle on his abilities, and maybe this was the first step.
Still, as he made his way to his next class, his mind began to race with new concerns. How would he explain this to Bella? And more importantly, how would he explain it to Charlie? His father was already on edge after everything that had happened, and Adam knew he wasn’t ready to tell him the truth about his abilities. But as bizarre as the Cullens’ offer was, they had a point—he needed to learn how to control whatever was happening to him.
One step at a time, Adam told himself as he tried to push the anxiety down. I’ll figure this out, and maybe I’ll finally get some answers.
A.N. It lives, I know i’ve been slacking with my other stories. Some have assumed I’ve abandoned them but I have not. I could have been better at developing a good writing regimen though.
Im trying out the writing a little bit every day or every other day philosophy. And its seem to help. Many times ive tried to write a whole chapter in a day and I certainly am capable of the feat it leads to mishaps and also burn out quickly. Which lends itself to these lengthy haituses. ALso just writers block.
Ive had a good idea where I wanna head with this story for several years now, the issue i have with this and many other stories. Is I have trouble getting through the buildup to the big moments I intend. That is the reason this story, my twilight/100 xover my elden ring/asoiaf xover fic along with my nier/asoiad xover, have had such sparsity. I hope this new writing regimen will be beneficial.
I also hope people enjoy the chapter, things are picking up speed, big things will be coming soon. I offer blood for the lady.
Chapter 9: Insightful Conversations
Chapter Text
Adam's heart raced as he approached Alice and Jasper in the school parking lot. The final bell had barely finished ringing, and already he was questioning his decision to accept their invitation. He clutched the strap of his backpack tightly, his knuckles white with tension.
"Hey, Adam," Alice greeted him with a warm smile. "Ready to go?"
He nodded, not trusting his voice. Jasper's calm presence seemed to ease his nerves slightly, though Adam couldn't shake the suspicion that it might be more than just natural charisma at play.
"We should probably let your dad know where you're going," Jasper said, his tone measured and reassuring. "Do you want to call him?"
Adam fumbled for his phone, realizing he hadn't thought this far ahead. "Uh, yeah. Good idea."
As he dialed Charlie's number, his fingers trembled slightly. When his father's gruff voice answered, Adam stumbled through an explanation.
"Dad, I'm... uh, I'm going to the Cullens' house. Dr. Cullen wanted to do a quick follow-up..."
He could hear Charlie's concern, and impulsively, he handed the phone to Jasper. "Can you explain? He'll probably feel better hearing it from you."
Jasper took the phone smoothly, his voice taking on a professional, almost doctorly tone as he spoke to Charlie. Adam marveled at how easily Jasper seemed to calm his father's worries, explaining that it was just a routine check-up and that Adam would be home for dinner.
As they piled into Alice's sleek car, Adam found himself sandwiched in the backseat between shopping bags and what looked like a stack of fashion magazines. Alice chattered away from the front seat, her bubbly personality filling the car with an almost forced cheerfulness.
"So, Adam, are you excited for the spring dance? It's coming up soon, you know!"
Adam blinked, thrown by the mundane topic. "Uh, I hadn't really thought about it..."
"Oh, you should! It's going to be so much fun. Maybe we can all go as a group?"
The conversation continued in this vein, a strange mix of normal high school talk and an undercurrent of nervous energy. Adam found himself relaxing slightly, drawn in by Alice's enthusiasm despite his apprehension.
As they turned onto a hidden driveway, the trees seemed to close in around them. The paved road gave way to a winding gravel path, and Adam felt a sense of isolation creeping in. When they finally emerged into a clearing, he couldn't help but gasp.
The Cullen house stood before them, a modern masterpiece of glass and wood that seemed to blend with yet stand apart from the surrounding forest. Three stories tall, with walls of windows reflecting the cloudy sky, it was unlike anything Adam had ever seen in Forks.
"Wow," he breathed, taking in the sight.
Alice grinned back at him. "Pretty cool, huh? Wait till you see the inside!"
As they approached the front door, Adam's nervousness returned to full force. He was about to enter the lion's den, so to speak. Whatever happened beyond that threshold would change everything. Taking a deep breath, he followed Alice and Jasper inside, steeling himself for whatever might come next.
As Alice swung open the front door, Adam stepped into a world that seemed to exist entirely outside of Forks. The interior of the Cullen house was a study in modern elegance, with an open floor plan that made the already large space feel truly enormous.
"Welcome to our home," Alice chirped, her enthusiasm infectious.
Adam's eyes roamed over the pristine white walls, the gleaming hardwood floors, and the floor-to-ceiling windows that bathed everything in natural light. It was beautiful, but something about it felt... off. Too perfect, too still.
A soft sound drew his attention to the top of the sweeping staircase. A woman with caramel-colored hair and a heart-shaped face descended gracefully, a warm smile on her lips.
"You must be Adam," she said, her voice melodic. "I'm Esme, Alice, and Jasper's mother."
As Adam shook her hand, he was struck by how cold it was. "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Cullen."
"Please, call me Esme," she insisted, her golden eyes twinkling.
Before Adam could respond, a booming voice echoed through the house. "Hey, new kid!"
Emmett bounded down the stairs, taking them two at a time. His massive frame seemed at odds with the delicate furnishings around him, but he moved with surprising grace.
"Emmett," Adam nodded, recognizing him from gym class. The familiar face provided a small comfort in the strange surroundings.
As Alice began to show him around, Adam couldn't help but notice peculiar details. The kitchen, despite its state-of-the-art appliances, looked completely unused. No dishes in the sink, no fruit bowl on the counter, and not even a stray crumb.
"Do you guys... cook much?" Adam asked hesitantly.
"Oh, we eat out a lot," Alice said quickly. "Come on, let me show you the rest of the house!"
As they moved through the rooms, Adam's unease grew. There was no sound of a TV, no music playing, no scent of laundry or cooking, or any of the normal smells of a lived-in home. Everything was almost too clean, too perfect.
Finally, Alice led him to what looked like a study. Bookshelves lined the walls, and a large desk dominated one corner of the room.
"We can talk here," Jasper said, closing the door behind them.
As Adam settled into a plush armchair, he felt a mixture of anticipation and dread. This was it - the moment he'd finally get some answers. But as Alice and Jasper took their seats across from him, he felt a familiar pressure building behind his eyes.
"So," Alice began, her voice gentle. "Why don't we start by telling you a bit more about what we can do?"
Adam nodded, trying to ignore the growing discomfort. As Alice began to speak, describing visions of possible futures, Adam noticed something strange. The lines he usually saw connecting people seemed to shimmer and shift around Alice and Jasper, pulsing with energy he'd never seen before.
His head throbbed, but for the first time in what felt like forever, Adam felt a some hope. Maybe, just maybe, he wasn't as alone as he thought.
As they settled into the study, Alice leaned forward, her eyes bright with curiosity. "Adam, we've told you a bit about our abilities before, but we'd like to go more in-depth if that's okay with you?"
Adam nodded, feeling a mix of anticipation and nervousness. "Yeah, I'd like that."
Alice smiled. "As I mentioned before, I can see potential futures. But it's more complex than just seeing what will happen. I see possibilities, paths that might be taken based on decisions people make."
She paused, considering her words carefully. "For example, I might see someone decide to drive to work one day, and I'll see them arrive safely. But if they change their mind at the last minute and take a different route, that future shifts. I'll see a new outcome."
Adam leaned in, fascinated despite the growing pressure behind his eyes. "How far into the future can you see?"
"It varies," Alice admitted. "Sometimes it's just a few minutes ahead, other times it can be years. But the further out I look, the less certain things become."
Jasper took over, and then his voice was calm and measured. "As for my ability, I can sense the emotions of those around me. It's like... feeling what they feel, in a way."
He paused, his golden eyes meeting Adam's. "I can also influence emotions to a degree. But I want you to know, Adam, that I would never use this ability on you without your explicit permission. Your feelings are your own, and I respect that."
Adam felt a wave of relief at Jasper's words. "I appreciate that," he said softly.
Jasper nodded. "Would you be comfortable if I demonstrated? I could help ease some of the tension you're feeling if you'd like."
Adam considered for a moment. The idea of someone manipulating his emotions was unsettling, but he was curious. And the constant stress he'd been under was exhausting. "Okay," he finally said. "I think I'd like to try it."
"Alright," Jasper said. "I'm going to project a feeling of calm. Let me know if it becomes too much."
Almost imperceptibly, Adam felt the knot of anxiety in his chest begin to loosen. The constant tension in his shoulders eased, and he found himself taking a deep, relaxed breath for what felt like the first time in months.
"Wow," he murmured. "That's... incredible."
Jasper smiled, a hint of pride in his expression. "I'm glad it helps. Remember, you're always in control. If you ever want me to stop, just say the word."
As the calm feeling faded, Adam found himself more at ease than before, even without Jasper's influence. "Thank you," he said sincerely.
Alice reached out, gently touching his arm. "Now, can you tell us more about what you're experiencing? You mentioned seeing connections between people?"
Adam nodded, taking a deep breath. This was it - the moment he'd been both dreading and longing for. As he began to speak, describing the lines he saw and the strange sensations he experienced, he felt a weight lifting from his shoulders. For the first time, he was truly opening up about his abilities, and the Cullens were listening with genuine interest and understanding.
As he spoke, he noticed the lines connecting Alice and Jasper seemed to pulse and shift, more vibrant than he'd ever seen before. Despite the increasing pressure in his head, Adam felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, with their help, he could finally start to make sense of his newfound abilities.
Adam took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. "The connections... they're like lines I can see between people. They have different colors and intensities. Sometimes they're clear, other times they're faded or flickering."
Alice leaned forward, her eyes bright with curiosity. "What do you think they mean?"
"I'm not entirely sure," Adam admitted. "But I think they represent relationships, emotions. The stronger the connection, the brighter and more solid the line."
He glanced between Alice and Jasper, noting the vibrant, pulsing line that connected them. "Like you two. The line between you is... intense. Brighter than most I've seen."
Jasper and Alice exchanged a quick glance, a silent communication passing between them.
"Can you see these lines all the time?" Jasper asked.
Adam shook his head. "Not always. Sometimes they're clearer than others. And when I focus on them too much..." He winced, pressing his fingers to his temples. "The headaches get worse."
Alice's brow furrowed with concern. "Is there anything that helps with the pain?"
"Not really," Adam sighed. "I've tried ignoring them, but it's like they're always there in the corner of my eye, demanding attention."
He hesitated for a moment, debating whether to mention the dreams. The memory of Yharnam, of Iosefka and the strange clinic, flashed through his mind.
"There's... something else," he said slowly, his voice dropping to almost a whisper. "I've been having these dreams..."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Adam felt a wave of unease wash over him. The dreams felt too personal, too strange to share just yet. He wasn't even sure if they were connected to his ability or just a product of his stressed mind.
Jasper looked over to him. "You don't have to tell us everything right now, Adam," he said gently. "We understand this is a lot to process."
Adam nodded gratefully, relieved at the out. "Thanks. I'm just... still trying to make sense of it all myself."
Alice reached out, her cold hand resting lightly on his arm. "We're here to help, Adam. Whatever you're comfortable sharing, whenever you're ready."
The gesture was comforting, but Adam couldn't help but notice how unnaturally cold her touch was. They truly were different, though he wondered was his touch cold too and he just never noticed.
"Can I ask you something?" Adam said, changing the subject slightly. "The lines I see around you and your family... they're different from anyone else's. Brighter, more... alive somehow. Why do you think that is?"
Alice and Jasper exchanged another of those quick, meaningful glances. There was a moment of tension in the air as if they were silently debating one another.
"Our family is... unique in many ways," Jasper finally said, his words carefully chosen. "Perhaps what you're seeing is a reflection of that uniqueness."
Adam nodded slowly, sensing there was more to it than Jasper was letting on. But he didn't push. After all, he had his own secrets he wasn't ready to share.
"There's something else," Adam said, preemptively wincing. "It's been happening more recently..., especially around your family. The headaches get worse, and I see... something else."
Alice and Jasper exchanged a quick, concerned glance. "What do you mean?" Alice asked, her voice soft.
Adam took a deep breath, trying to find the proper words. "It's like... a colored mist or aura around your heads. Not all of you, just some. You, Jasper, and Edward specifically."
He noticed Jasper stiffen slightly at the mention of Edward's name. Alice's expression remained neutral, but there was a hint of something—surprise? Concern?—in her eyes.
"Now that I think on it, I'm wondering if it's connected to your abilities," Adam continued, his gaze moving between them. "The colors are different for each of you. Alice, yours is green. Jasper, yours is yellow. And Edward's... he is red."
The tension in the room seemed to increase palpably. Straing seemed to build around Jasper's eyes.
"That's... interesting," Alice said slowly. "You're very perceptive, Adam."
Adam nodded, emboldened by their reaction. "I've been wondering... what is Edward's ability? Is it something like yours or Jasper's?"
Alice and Jasper shared another of those lightning-fast glances. A brief pop of tension filled the room again.
After that moment of silence that felt much longer than it probably was, Alice spoke. Her voice was gentle but firm. "I think it's best if Edward tells you about that himself one day. It's not for me to say."
He was admittedly frustrated by the evasion, but he could tell from their expressions that this was a line they weren't willing to cross. He nodded, trying to hide his disappointment. "I understand."
Jasper leaned forward slightly, his golden eyes intense. "Adam, what you're experiencing... it's unique. And potentially very powerful. We want to help you understand it, but there are some things about our family that we need to keep private for now. I hope you can respect that."
Adam considered Jasper's words and well appreciated his velvety voice. He had his own secrets, after all. Things hewasn't ready to share. He could respect the need for privacy even if it irked him.
"I get it," he said finally. "I appreciate you guys being willing to talk about this at all. It's... it's been a lot to deal with on my own."
Alice's expression softened. " I promise you're no longer alone, Adam. We may not have all answers, but we're here to help where we can."
A familiar pain shot through him instinctively he pressed his index and middle fingers to his temple. It felt like a waterfall was drumming against his insides.
Alice noticed immediately. "Adam, are you okay?"
He tried to nod, but the movement sent a fresh wave of agony. . "I... I think I need a minute," he managed to say through gritted teeth.
"I'll get you some water," Jasper said, quickly standing up.
As Jasper left the room, Alice moved closer to Adam, her cool hand gently touching his arm. "Just breathe," she said softly. "Try to focus on something simple, like the sound of your breath."
Adam closed his eyes, trying to follow her advice. But as he attempted to concentrate, something strange happened. The lines he usually saw began to shift and change behind his closed eyelids, forming intricate patterns he'd never seen before.
"I... I'm seeing something," he whispered, his voice strained. "The lines, they're... changing."
Alice's grip on his arm tightened slightly. "What do you mean? What do you see?"
Before Adam could answer, the study door opened. He cracked his eyes open to see Carlisle Cullen entering, a look of concern on his face.
"I heard we had a visitor," Carlisle said, his voice calm and professional. "How are you feeling, Adam?"
"He's having a killer migraine," Alice explained quickly. "And he says he's seeing something new with his ability."
Carlisle moved swiftly to Adam's side, his cool fingers pressing gently against Adam's wrist, taking his pulse. "Can you describe what you're seeing, Adam?"
Adam took a shaky breath. "It's like... a web. All the lines connect, forming patterns. And around you all, the colored auras are... pulsing."
He opened his eyes fully, looking at Carlisle. To his shock, he saw a blue mist surrounding the doctor's head, similar to the auras he'd seen around Alice, Jasper, and Edward.
"You have it too," Adam said, his voice barely above a whisper. "The aura."
Carlisle and Alice exchanged a quick, meaningful glance. Before either could respond, Jasper returned with a glass of water and some pain relievers.
As Adam took the medicine, he noticed the tension in the room. Carlisle's face was filled with concern, but there wassomething in his eyes that spoke at more.
"Adam," Carlisle said gently, " Unfortunately, it may be best if we continue this another time. You need rest."
As Alice and Jasper helped him to his feet, Adam suddenly felt a wave of dizziness wash over him.
"I... I think I need to go home," he mumbled.
"Of course," Alice said, her voice soothing. "We'll drive you."
As they led him out of the study, Adam couldn't shake the feeling that he'd been on the verge of discovering something monumental. The patterns he'd seen, the impossible speed of Carlisle's movement - it all hinted at a larger mystery.
"We'll talk more soon," Jasper assured him.
He found himself hesitating to leave. There were still so many questions burning in his mind, and Carlisle's presence offered a new perspective he hadn't considered before.
"Dr. Cullen," Adam began, his voice slightly strained, "before I go, I was wondering if I could ask you something about... abilities like mine."
Carlisle exchanged a quick glance with Alice and Jasper before turning his full attention to Adam. "Of course. What would you like to know?"
Adam took a deep breath, steeling himself. "I've been having these dreams... really vivid ones. I was wondering if you knew if abilities like mine could be related to dreams somehow?"
For a moment, Carlisle looked genuinely taken aback. It was an expression Adam hadn't expected to see on the usually composed doctor's face.
"Dreams?" Carlisle repeated, his brow furrowing slightly. "That's... an interesting question, Adam. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. The connection between supernatural abilities and dreams isn't something I've encountered before."
Adam could sense a hint of uncertainty in Carlisle's voice, which was surprising given how knowledgeable the doctor usually seemed.
"It's just," Adam continued, encouraged by Carlisle's honest response, "these dreams feel different. More real. Usually, dreams feel real until you wake up or realize they're false, and then they become hazy, like normal dreams. But these...they still feel solid, like memories of things that actually happened."
Carlisle leaned forward, his golden eyes intense with curiosity. "Can you tell me more about these dreams? What happens in them?"
Adam hesitated for a moment, glancing at Alice and Jasper. Their expressions were carefully neutral, but he could sense their interest.
"Well, during my coma, I had this really vivid dream," Adam began slowly. "I was in this strange place called Yharnam. There was a woman named Iosefka, and she talked about hunters and beasts. It was all so detailed, so...concrete. Even now, thinking about it, it doesn't feel like a normal dream."
Carlisle's expression was thoughtful. "That is quite unusual," he admitted. "The level of detail you're describing isn't typical for normal dreams. However, I must confess, my knowledge of human sleep patterns and dream states is...somewhat limited."
Adam noticed a flicker of something pass between Alice, Jasper, and Carlisle at this admission, but he couldn't quite decipher its meaning.
"The human mind is incredibly complex," Carlisle continued, his tone becoming more professional. "And when it comes to supernatural abilities manifesting in people, we're in largely uncharted territory despite my experience with the children. It's possible that your abilities are influencing your dreams in ways we don't yet understand."
Adam nodded, feeling both frustrated and oddly relieved by Carlisle's honesty. At least he wasn't alone in his confusion.
"Is there anything I can do?" Adam asked. "To understand these dreams better, or to control them?"
Carlisle considered for a moment. "Keeping a dream journal might be helpful. Write down everything you remember as soon as you wake up. Over time, we might be able to see patterns or connections we're missing now."
Adam nodded, "would it be alright if I stayed a bit longer? I'd like to try drawing what I saw in my dream. It might help me remember more details."
Carlisle's eyebrows raised slightly, surprised by the request. After a moment's consideration, he nodded. "Of course, Adam. That's an interesting approach. I'm curious to see what you might produce."
Alice quickly procured some paper and pencils, setting them on the desk in the study. Adam sat down, his hand hovering over the blank page for a moment before he began to sketch.
At first, he started with the surgery table, its cold metal surface etched clearly in his mind. But as he continued, the image shifted. Almost without realizing it, Adam found himself drawing Iosefka herself.
As his pencil moved across the paper, Adam felt a strange sensation wash over him. It was as if the act of drawing was unlocking more memories, bringing the dream into sharper focus. He could see Iosefka's face more clearly now - her gentle smile, her inquiring eyes filled with a mix of kindness and scientific curiosity.
The Cullens watched in fascinated silence as Adam worked. His hand moved with a surety that surprised even him, capturing details he hadn't consciously remembered - the worn floorboards of the clinic, the glint of light on bloodied metal instruments, the intricate patterns on Iosefka's clothing.
A strange thought flitted through Adam's mind: "To paint I must see, but to see I must paint." He wasn't sure where it came from, but it felt right somehow. He was reaching for something beyond mere art - he was capturing an entire world within the canvas through the lens of a single woman and her surroundings.
As he worked, Adam felt a fire-like passion flowing through him an intense connection to a place and people that only existed in his dreams. But it didn't disturb him. Instead, he felt a sense of rightness, as if he was tapping into something fundamental about himself. A great truth he never even knew.
Time seemed to lose all meaning as Adam drew. He was vaguely aware of the Cullens moving around him, likely conversing with each other, but he paid them no mind. He was lost in the world of Yharnam beyond the canvas, in the quiet intensity of Iosefka's clinic.
Finally, after what could have been minutes or hours, Adam set down his pencil. He blinked, coming back to himself, and looked down at what he had created.
The drawing was startlingly detailed. Iosefka stood in the foreground, her face a perfect blend of compassion and intensity. Behind her, the clinic sprawled in intricate detail - the surgery table, the blood-stained instruments, the gothic architecture of the building itself. And in the background, barely sketched but unmistakable, were the spires of Yharnam beyond her adobe.
Adam stared at the drawing, unease settling in his stomach. How had he remembered all of this? How had he drawn it with such precision?
He looked up to find the Cullens staring at the drawing with equal intensity. Carlisle's face still held concern but also unmistakable fascination.
"Adam," he said softly, "this is... remarkable. Can you tell us more about what you've drawn here?"
Adam looked up from his drawing, suddenly aware of the intense scrutiny from the Cullens. He noticed Alice behind Carlisle, her face tightened with what seemed like frustration. The Cullen's Mother, standing in the doorway, was giving him an odd look that he lacked the insight to decipher.
Carlisle's question hung in the air, and Adam hesitated, uncertain how to respond. He glanced back at his drawing, the details so vivid it was almost unsettling. After a moment of internal debate, he realized that after sharing this much and using their art supplies, there wasn't much sense in holding back now.
"This is Iosefka," Adam began slowly, his finger tracing the woman's face on the paper. "At least, I think she's real and not just a creation in my dream. She's a doctor, I think, or some kind of healer."
He paused, gathering his thoughts. "In the dream, she saved me from something... or someone. There was another person at the end, someone who was trying to hurt her."
Adam's brow furrowed as he tried to recall the details. "It's hard to remember exactly what happened. By the time I...woke up, I guess, whatever the threat was seemed to have been dealt with. But the specifics are fuzzy."
Carlisle leaned in, examining the drawing more closely. "The level of detail here is extraordinary, Adam. Especially for a dream."
Adam nodded, still a bit overwhelmed by what he'd produced. "I know. It's strange - the more I drew, the more I seemed to remember. It's like the act of drawing itself was unlocking memories I didn't know I had."
He looked up at Carlisle, then at Alice and Esme. Their expressions were a mix of fascination and something else - concern? Wariness? "Does that make any sense? Is that... normal for abilities like mine?"
Carlisle exchanged a quick glance with Alice before responding. "As I mentioned before, Adam, we're in uncharted territory here. The connection between supernatural abilities and dreams isn't something we fully understand."
Adam couldn't help but notice the tension in the room. Alice's frustration seemed to have deepened, while Esme's odd look had transformed into one of motherly concern.
"Is everything okay?" Adam asked, suddenly feeling self-conscious. "Did I say something wrong?"
Esme stepped forward, her voice gentle. "Not at all, dear. We're just... processing. This is all very new and intriguing."
Adam nodded, but he couldn't shake the feeling that there was more here than they were letting on. He looked back at his drawing, at Iosefka's face staring up at him from the paper.
"Thank you for letting me do this," Adam said, gesturing to the drawing. "I think... I think it's helped. Even if I don't understand everything yet, it feels like a step forward."
Carlisle nodded, his expression softening. "We're here to help, Adam. Whatever these dreams mean, whatever your ability entails, you're not alone in this."
He looked down at his hands, which were trembling slightly.
"There's something else," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm... I'm scared."
Carlisle leaned forward, his golden eyes filled with compassion. "What are you afraid of, Adam?"
Adam took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "I'm scared of getting stuck in the dream again. Of losing more days of my life. What if next time it's not just five days? What if it's weeks? Months?" His voice cracked slightly. "What if I don't wake up at all?"
This moment of vulnerability seemed to soften the evolving tension. Alice walked closer, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Oh, Adam," she said softly. "I can't imagine how frightening that must be."
Carlisle nodded, his expression thoughtful. "It's a valid fear, Adam. What you experienced was traumatic both the Coma and whatever strangeness within its scope, and it's completely normal to be afraid of it happening again."
"But we're here for you now," Alice added, her voice firm and reassuring. "Pinkie swear."
Adam looked up, his eyes moving from Alice to Carlisle and back again. "But what if it happens again? What if I can't control it?"
Carlisle leaned forward, his voice gentle but firm. "Adam, I want you to listen to me. While we can't promise that it won't happen again, we can promise that we'll do everything in our power to help you. We'll research, we'll monitor, we'll do whatever it takes to understand what's happening and how to manage it."
"And if something does happen," Alice chimed in, "we'll be here. We'll make sure you're safe, that you're cared for."
Adam felt a lump forming in his throat. The sincerity in their voices, the genuine concern in their eyes - it was almost overwhelming after feeling so alone with his fears for so long.
"Thank you," he managed to say, his voice thick with emotion. "I... I don't know what to say."
Carlisle smiled warmly. "You don't have to say anything. Just know that you have support here, whenever you need it."
After a moment, Carlisle glanced at the clock on the wall. "It's getting late," he said gently. "I think it's probably best if you head home now, Adam."
Adam nodded, suddenly feeling the weight of exhaustion pressing down on him. As he stood to leave, Carlisle placed a hand on his shoulder.
"And Adam," he said, his voice kind but serious, "despite your understandable fear, try to get some sleep. Rest is important, especially when you're dealing with something like this."
Adam swallowed hard but nodded. "I'll try," he promised.
As Jasper and Alice prepared to drive him home, Adam couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. Fear still lurked in the back of his mind, but it was tempered now by a sense of hope. Whatever was happening to him, whatever these dreams meant, he wasn't facing it alone anymore.
With one last look at his drawing of Iosefka and the clinic, Adam followed Alice and Jasper out of the house. Part of him still considered trying to evade REM sleep for longer. But realistically he knew he couldn't do that he had to take Carlisle's advice end of the day he couldn't evade true sleep forever. He just wondered in sleep what dreams may come.
Iosefka's POV:
The clinic creaked and groaned, its old bones settling in the quiet of the night. Iosefka stood in the doorway of the room where, mere days ago, her life had changed irrevocably. The twisted, cosmic form of her former acolyte still lay where it had fallen, a grotesque monument to the dangers of forbidden knowledge.
"Oh, you poor thing," she murmured, her voice a mixture of pity and clinical detachment. "What have you become?"
She approached cautiously, her steps measured and slow. The closer she got, the more she could feel it a wrongness that made her mind recoil. Yet she couldn't look away.
"What am I to do with you?" she wondered aloud. "I cannot open my door to the hunters, lest I expose my patients to infection. But this... this is beyond my expertise."
Part of her, the rational doctor, knew she should dispose of it. It was a biohazard, a potential source of infection that could spread the scourge further. But another part, the sentimental fool she tried so hard to bury, couldn't bear the thought. This... thing was all that remained of a bright young woman who had once been her student, her confidante.
"This night is long," she sighed, echoing words she'd spoken to countless hunters. "But morning always comes. Or so we must believe."
And then there was the boy. That strange, otherworldly child who had appeared and disappeared like a phantom. The boy who had somehow known things he shouldn't, who had been connected to the hunters' dream in ways she couldn't fathom. This cosmic corpse was the only proof she had that he had been real, that she hadn't finally succumbed to the madness that seemed to infect everyone in this damned city eventually.
Iosefka sighed, turning away from the body. She made her way up the creaking stairs to her sleeping quarters, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts and emotions. As she prepared for bed, she couldn't shake the feeling of unreality that had plagued her since that fateful day.
"Am I losing my mind?" she wondered aloud, staring at her reflection in the cracked mirror above her washbasin. "Have I let the hunt overcome me?" The woman who stared back looked tired, haunted. How long had it been since she'd truly rested?
She settled into her bed, the sheets cool against her skin. Despite her exhaustion, sleep seemed a distant prospect. Her mind kept replaying the events of the past few days - the arrival of the boy, the transformation of her acolyte, the strange, dreamlike quality of it all.
"May light shine upon this night," she prayed softly, her words barely a whisper in the dark room. "And may our fortunes turn for the better."
As she finally drifted off, her last conscious thought was a fervent hope that when she opened her eyes next, she would find herself back in the world she knew, a world that, for all its horrors, at least made sense to her.
When Iosefka opened her eyes, she found herself in a place utterly foreign to her experience...
Gone were the familiar sounds and smells of her clinic. Instead, she was surrounded by towering trees, their branches reaching up to a star-studded sky unlike any she'd seen in Yharnam. The air was crisp and clean, devoid of the acrid stench of incense and beast blood that permeated her city.
For a moment, she simply stood there, her bare feet sinking slightly into the damp earth. Was this another dream? A hallucination brought on by stress and lack of sleep?
Before she could fully gather her wits, movement caught her eye. A figure emerged from the shadows of the trees, moving with a grace that immediately set Iosefka on edge. As he stepped into a patch of moonlight, she felt her breath catch in her throat.
The young man before her was beautiful in a way that was almost painful to look at. His features were pristine and angular, reminiscent of the noblemen of Cainhurst. But there was something else there too - a predatory gleam in his eyes that spoke of barely contained violence.
"Vileblood," Iosefka whispered, the word escaping her lips before she could stop it.
The young man's eyebrows rose slightly, a flicker of confusion passing over his face. Before he could speak, four others joined him, materializing from the darkness with unnatural speed.
Iosefka's heart raced, but years of facing the horrors of Yharnam had taught her to keep her composure. She straightened her back, lifting her chin defiantly as she faced the group.
Among them was a blonde girl whose haughty expression and regal bearing screamed Cainhurst nobility. The similarity was so striking that for a moment, Iosefka wondered if she had somehow been transported to the cursed castle itself.
Drawing on every ounce of courage she possessed, Iosefka spoke, her voice steadier than she felt. "Why have you taken me from my clinic, Vilebloods? What purpose could I possibly serve for your kind?"
The beings before her exchanged glances, their perfect faces a mixture of confusion and wariness. It was clear her words had caught them off guard.
Then, unexpectedly, another figure stepped forward. He was a few years older than the others, with blonde hair and a face that radiated compassion despite its inhuman beauty. When he spoke, his voice was gentle.
"Iosefka?"
The name hung in the air between them, laden with unspoken questions. Iosefka stared at him, her mind reeling. How did this stranger know her name? And why did he seem just as surprised by this knowledge as she was?
As she stood there, surrounded by these beautiful yet terrifying beings, Iosefka couldn't shake the feeling that the cosmic truth had given way to something else entirely, a strange pure light she failed to notice before permeating but a distance away.
The hunt, it seemed, had taken on an entirely new form.
A.N. I hope everyone enjoyed this chapter. The twist with Iosefka has been planned since Chapter 3, way back when I started this story years ago. I debated pushing it back a few more chapters, but I felt the story might become too slow if I did that. So, here we are!
I invite you all to ponder some questions: How did this happen? Will the Cullens tell Adam? How will this affect the plot in both worlds?
Also, I wanted to clarify something: Many readers were under the impression that Adam was "the Hunter." I tried to dispel this by having him witness the Hunter being created from afar. Adam isn't exactly a Hunter; however, he is connected to Yharnam in a way similar to how characters like Ariamis, Ariandel, and Aria from the Dark Souls series are connected to the worlds of their paintings.
