Chapter 2: Making of

Chapter Text

Step 1

Make big and small hoops out of thin wire and plyers. This is the common base for both types of flowers, an adaptable but durable spine of steel.

For the Li Qian flowers, I followed this tutorial. For Zhu Hong, one like this

Step 2

For Li Qian flowers, I used thin plastic bags that reminded me of her passion and competency for science. It is at once resilient, useful and fragile. This ties her fate, for good and bad (red and white strings). The small round petals are delicate-looking but sturdy, like her.

Step 3

I did the same for Zhu Hong. She's made of black tights, which calls in texture to her scally snake side but also to her wish to be human-like and to learn to walk like a human woman. I am allergic to nylon so these are a bit of a thicker blend and have less transparency, so they look to be solid black (unreadable) but it makes a very pretty effect when the light catch the petals just right (as when you get to know Zhu Hong). These petals are longer, bigger, pointier.

Step 4

Bundle the petals together! Li Qian's petals are held together with grey duck tape (science, resilience, shiny) and Zhu Hong is held by red cotton string (natural, wilder, purposeful). The Zhu Hong petals turned out a lot thicker than in any of the tutorials I watched for tights flowers, so they have a particular conical shape.

Step 5

Add stamens (rolled up soft pink tissue paper for Li Qian, and slightly curled gift wrap ribbon for Zhu Hong, because they are both gifts. <3

Not shown here, but I put them both on wooden sticks for stems. Simple and study, like their relationship.

finished Li Qian flowers, where we can see the duck tape holding the petals together and a soft pink stem. Zhu Hong flowers showing the thicker base and the half-translucid effect at the tip of the petals. It's super Sapphic.
