Atsumu and Sakusa are far apart in their apartment kitchen pretending not to notice each other’s presence, the air of the room sizzling from their last fight. Sakusa scoffed, it was the third one this week and second one today, you would not believe it was only Tuesday.
Atsumu clicked his tongue in reply as he slapped the pieces of a sandwich together, he was in charge of making breakfast today, but he didn’t think his boyfriend deserved more than a sandwich. Up to him and Sakusa would have only canned beans to start his day.
“If you use any more violence on the food, it’ll press charges for battery.” Sakusa snarked from where he stood by the coffee machine. He’d barely made enough for both of them but that didn’t stop him from taking to his heart's content and leaving what was left for Atsumu.
Atsumu hissed and snapped his head towards him, “Don’t ya speak to me,” his tone was venomous as he threw the battered sandwich into the sandwich maker, stray pieces of lettuce flying out from the sides.
“Just mind yer own coffee making business,” he paused to get a good look at the Keurig’s carafe and scoffed, “and drink the whole thing while yer at it, since yer so thirsty for coffee this morning.”
“Well, I’ll definitely need something to fill my stomach up,” Sakusa laughed sardonically, shrugging and pouring more coffee into his mug “‘cause I’m not eating whatever poisonous concoction you’ve pieced together to kill me.”
“Why you-“ Atsumu started, the ringing of his phone cutting him off from the expletives he was about to spew. He looked down and rolled his eyes, of course it was a call from his brother, Osamu always had the worst fucking timing. “Yello? Miya Atsumu speaking!”
He paused for a second and threw his boyfriend a dirty look over his shoulder, turning around with a ‘humph before answering. “Yes, I do have ta say that every time, ‘Samu.”
Sakusa sighed and watched him slither out to the living room to complete his call, his eyes following Atsumu like a hawk. He walked to the toaster and pulled the massacred sandwich out, sighing again when he took in its miserable state.
Their fights were getting more stupid with each new one, yesterday it was an argument over the type of tissue they should get for their guest bathroom, and he couldn’t even recall what had caused their last squabble a few minutes ago.
It seemed as though these days Atsumu just didn’t want to agree with him on anything. Sakusa could say the sky was blue, and he’d still find a way to make an argument out of it. “Babe, it’s not just blue, its light blue,” or something like that.
He wasn’t going to pour all the fault on Atsumu, though, he could admit that he had become more irritable in the past few weeks with the new season beginning, but Atsumu wasn’t exactly the most sensible person on earth. Sometimes, he just said the most darndest little things that pissed him off beyond compare.
Unfortunately, he and Atsumu were two halves of a pair. Despite them having their differences, they had the times when they both seemed to conclude on one similar point, and this time, both were patiently waiting on the other to apologize. The moment Sakusa looked into Atsumu’s eyes after their first argument this week, he quickly realized they were both too stubbornly stubborn to admit their wrongs or apologize first.
Sakusa sighed one more time once he was done making his sandwich look presentable, plating it and moving to the living room. He paused just before the door and eyed the carafe, looking down at his sandwich and back and the jug before backtracking. He sighed and dumped the rest into his mug. He might as well.
Atsumu looked up once he opened the door and scrunched his nose, getting up from the couch and walking past him. He eyed his his cup of coffee and sandwich with disdain before going walking back into the kitchen, rolling his eyes and making a sound at the back of his throat.
He relaxed into the chair and lifted his sandwich to the door, ears perking up as he listened on the conversation in his kitchen. The first time Atsumu had called him by his last name, he’d jumped slightly. He was still on the phone with his brother, talking about what could only be their more recent fight this morning. The younger paid no attention -look up 'tried not to'- to it and brushed it off as a minor slip-up from speaking too fast. Sometimes he called Osamu “’Tsumu” when he was in a rush, a last name is arguably better than another person’s name.
He shrugged and lifted his hands, poising his sandwich by his mouth and taking a sizeable bite. He gagged and swallowed, turning abruptly when he heard his last name slip through the slats of their louvered kitchen door again. This second time was a double kill. He had said something along the lines of “no, I don’t know what Sakusa would like” -even though he did know- and “Whatever, sure I’ll ask him.”
The black-haired man sipped his coffee and righted himself, pretending he hadn’t just been listening in on the brothers' conversation then Atsumu had stuck his head out the kitchen door and asked, directly to his face, “Sakusa,” he started, eyes fixed in a bored stare. “My brother -oh shut yer trap, Osamu- wants to know you’d like anything from his shop? since he’s coming over today.”
Sakusa stared at him in disbelief, mouth slightly agape. What? who?
There was a scoff and a click of tongue as the older shrugged and turned back into the kitchen with an “I guess he doesn’t want anything.”
Sakusa looked between his sandwich and his coffee in confusion, were his ears fucking with him? Did Atsumu just call him what he thought he did? Atsumu, his Atsumu, that hadn't spoken his last name for years? It couldn’t be.
He looked up when he heard the blonde’s reluctant footsteps drag back into the living room “Oi Saku-“
“Stop doing that!” He snapped, scowling at his boyfriend and watching him recoil at the sudden rise in volume.
Atsumu challenged him with a scowl of his own and placed his hands on his hip, “Stop doing what?” His face was pinched in annoyance and eyebrows furrowed deeply, "I literally just walked into here."
“Stop calling me that.” He said, looking at the man fiercely. His eyes looked like he could burn a hole into the apartment walls.
“What?” the blonde blushed and crosse his arms over his chest, feigning ignorance.
“Stop calling me Sakusa," he grit out, lips curling up into a nasty look. "We don’t do that; you don’t do that. Why are you doing that?”
“‘S that not yer name?” Atsumu asked with his head tilted, “Or am I missing somethin’?”
“Don’t act dumb, Atsumu,” he said, chewing around the words awkwardly to make his point. “it’s my name but it’s also a name you’ve never called me, even when we weren’t dating.”
“Why does that fucking matter?” Atsumu exploded, throwing his hands up in annoyance. His jaw ticked and Sakusa braced himself. Here it came, you knew a fight was going to start once Atsumu began to twitch and swear.
“Because” Sakusa argued, getting up to meet him. He stopped once they were toe to toe, looking him in the eye and gesturing between them. “We. Don’t. Do. That.”
“Wha-“
“We don’t act like we’re breaking up over petty little fights we’ll forget in the next hour.” His voice was light as he brought a hand to his boyfriend’s face. He hadn’t planned on apologizing first, but he figured Atsumu was really hurt if he was acting like this. Not to mention, the name change just completely took him by surprise and he didn’t like it one bit. “You’ve not called me Sakusa since the first time we met in highschool, that is what I’d imagine you’d call me if we ever broke up and you began to hate my guts.”
“Tha-that’s not true.” Atsumu stuttered looking away from the taller man. Yes, it was.
“Yes, it is.” He countered simply, dragging out a light mutter of agreement from Osamu who was apparently still on the line.
“Whatever,” Atsumu said, slapping his hand off his cheek. He was trying to be stubborn about it, meaning that the last fight had made him feel really terrible. “So ya get to be mad at everything I do, and I can’t even call you a different name for a little while?”
“Because” he continued, taking a deep breath “it’s like yer dying for a fight every time I meet ya or- or try to start up a conversation with ya,” he scoffed and threw his hands in the air, “hell, I can’t even make suggestions without ya turning it into a fight -it’s so infuriating!
He looked away and Sakusa’s eyes softened, holding his tongue and giving him space to get his annoyance off his chest. “And ya wouldn’t even tell me what I’ve done or why ya feel that way ya just dump yer frustrations on me like I'm just gonna sit there and take it.” He swallows, “well screw you, I can’t- I won’t take it. Not now not ever.” His voice breaks and Sakusa feels his heart drop into stomach, “ and, yeah, I know I can be annoying and say silly things from time to time but none of the things I've said or done warrant ya snapping at me like I'm the one thing wrong with your life that you can't seem to fix, can’t ya tell I’m hurt when you do that? don't ya see in my eyes that I'm hurting?”
The whole room is deadly silent as Atsumu’s voice cracks with tears. From their living room to Osamu on the other side of the line, pin drop silent.
“Atsumu,” Sakusa tried, using both hands to raise his face to look at him. “Tsumu I’m so fucking sorry.”
More tears roll down Atsumu’s face as he gently pushed against his chest. “ya started acted like ya were tired of our relationship- of me first.” the ravenette's eyes blow wide at the accusation “so when ya said I was the one acting like we were breaking up it made me so confused and angry and annoyed-“
“I’m sorry” Sakusa tried again, pulling him into a hug “I’m so, so sorry Tsumu. I acted like a jerk for no reason, I’m sorry. I never wanted to make you feel that way, ever. I'm frustrated about the new season starting soon-“
“So ya poured out the frustration onto me?”
“It makes no sense and I’m an asshole, I know,” he tried squeezing tighter, “I’m so sorry. I don’t think you’re an emotionless robot and I don’t expect you to take all the crazy bullshit I throw at you and I’m most definitely not ever breaking up with you, I love you so much and I’m so fucking sorry.”
“I love you too,” Atsumu said into the hug with a sniff, wiping his tears on Sakusa’s shoulders and resting his face in his neck to calm down properly. “And I’m sorry as well; for being annoying even though I saw you mad and the name calling,” he hugged tighter, “I'm also sorry for charging three pairs of 140,900 Yen shoes to your debit card.”
“Well, I definitely did not know about the last part,” Sakusa said, making to pull away from the hug.
“Yeah, well ya can’t get mad anymore,” Atsumu said, hugging him tighter. “we’re saying our apologies, so the past is in the past.”
“I’m letting this go because I made you cry,” Sakusa said, kissing his cheek and under his eyes lightly. The two stayed in the hug for a while, swaying themselves slowly like a pendulum bob.
They pulled apart once Sakusa was confident Atsumu felt better, the shorter shuffling them over to the table where he dropped his phone. He laughed at the sound of their feet before turning in his boyfriend’s hold to pick up his phone. “I should call my brother back and tell him everything is f-“
“I’m right here!” Osamu called from the other side of the line, voice booming through the room even though he was not on speaker. Atsumu kissed his teeth and rolled his eyes, so fucking loud.
“Let me finish this call,” he said to Sakusa as he broke free from his hug, their hands still intertwined.
“Ya okay?” His brother asked into the call gently, “I heard ya crying.”
“No I’m fine- we’re fine,” he stumbled, turning to look at Sakusa who nodded back at him. “We’re all good now.”
“And ya thought he was gonna break up with ya,” Osamu cackled on the other side of the line, mimicking his brother. “He hates me now, he’s gonna break up with me! I told ya he was too obsessed with ya to do that.”
“Shut up, you wouldn’t.” Atsumu mumbled as his face turned red, looking back to make sure Sakusa wasn’t listening in on their call. “Also, yeah, before I forget, Omi-kun will have yakitori with yaki onigiri, right?”
His boyfriend nodded enthusiastically and pulled him back by the waist, kissing his neck lightly and taking in deep breaths of his scent.
“Alright, coming right up,” his brother noted the order down, “I’ll call ya when I’m almost there, don’t be too hard on yourself when stuff like this happens, okay?”
“Yeah, okay. Goodbye ‘Samu.” He said, ending the call and turning into his boyfriend’s hug again. “Can you make me coffee? I can’t believe you drank the whole jug of coffee.”
“I didn’t drink the whole jug,” Sakusa defended as he walked them to the couch to lay down, pulling Atsumu to rest on his chest.
“Yeah, ya just drank the majority of it.” Atsumu was laughing and he had never felt so ecstatic to hear a laugh. He couldn’t believe he made him cry, he felt like such a dick.
“And if we’re talking about petty, what was up with that sandwich?” Sakusa asked, looking down at the blonde who was sprawled across his chest. “What was even in there? It tasted like a hate crime.”
“...”
“Tsumu?”
“I can’t even remember what I put in your sandwich,” he said, sitting up a little to look at Sakusa. “I hope you didn’t eat it.”
“I took a bite and my eyes started to water,” he mumbled with a smile, making Atsumu laugh again. “I couldn’t have eaten it if I tried.”
“Come on,” Atsumu said, getting up and pulling Sakusa after him. “You make me coffee and I’ll share my sandwich with you.”
“Sounds good,” Sakusa said, following him with a smile. “Sounds really good.” He took a step and stopped suddenly, spinning Atsumu around gently and pulling him into another hug. "Say my name?"
The blonde let out a startled sound and then paused before, "Omi-kun"
"Again...."
"Omi-kun"
"Again, please."
"Omi-omi"
"I love you so fucking much, Atsumu."
"I love you too, Kiyoomi," they were smiling, they were alright. "let's go have breakfast."
"Yeah, let's."
