Chapter 1: The warning signs

Chapter Text

A/N: From the okay of using some characters that aren't mine I decided to finally sit down and actually write the story for this AU tat I love SO MUCH! I hope you guys enjoy!

Sighing heavily Kaiman stared at the tools before him, staring at the messy desk with everything from notes to tubes, and other sorts of things. Lighting a cigarette as he stared at the remaining samples of his wife's eggs and his sperm. He'd been working on this project for him and his wife for three years. And not a single egg was stable. He was debating on ending it but Crow was determined to be a mother again, and had help from Kasukabe, Yue and sometimes Vaux.

Rocking softly in his seat as he allowed the cancer stick to sit in his mouth, especially since he changed jobs from the Hungry Bug back to the hospital he hadn't really seen anyone for a while busy with his work. Just like old times. After laying his head back as he allowed his thoughts to wonder. The only light and smell in the room was from his cigarette, a small light filling his work space as the rest was pitch black. He opened his mouth as he exhaled the smoke from his nostrils, turning to his clock on the desk.

Three am.

It was so late. Crow and Robin must have been worried about him. Sighing to himself he went to turn but stopped as he noticed something on his shelf that got caught in the lamp's light. A bottle of some of Lake Refuge's water that remained. He took it in hand before sitting back again as he rolled it in his hand.

They've been studying this to see if there's any healing properties but nothing could be found yet. He turned to one of Crow's eggs before taking the cancer stick out of his mouth.

"Maybe it'll.." He thought aloud before getting to work. after placing the cigarette back in his mouth he grabbed a syringe before withdrawing some of Lake Refuge's liquid from it. Once that was ready he placed one of the eggs carefully onto a tray before injecting it with the lake before his own sperm. Watching it on the microscope carefully, he seen how the reaction is usually before anything, signs of anything bad, a miscarriage threat, all kinds of things from his three years of doing this. He knew sorcerers and humans were different in little ways and luckily sorcerer eggs worked a bit faster when it came to fertilization than humans so they can see signs before they happen, at least from Kaiman's findings. But something he wasn't expecting did happen.

The sperm and egg worked thanks to the small amount of Refuge. Kaiman sat back in shock as he laughed softly.

"W-Wow! Now just to see if it'll be stable with Crow and hopefully we'll have a baby."

"Dove! Come on sweetie it's time for school!" Crow called as the teen sat up with a grumble. She never was one to be a morning person and her she was. Yawning loudly she gotten up as she started to change into her uniform lazily. Knowing Kayko was gonna annoy her at some point about her being late and all. She tiredly pulled her hair up into a ponytail as she walked around her room. Her brother Robin had moved out a couple years back so what used to be his room was turned into a guest room. He was still allowed to sleep in it when he visited of course but hey why not?

Dove finished tying her hair back as she sighed staring at her reflection, seeing an all too familiar figure sitting on her bed as she turned and stared at him.

It was Kai.

Or at least from what he explained the remnants of Kai. He was sitting on her bed watching her grab her things, studying her as if. Dove patted her skirt down as she then checked her bag.

"You're going again aren't you?" Kai asked finally. Dove turned to him, not used to him talking as she shrugged a bit.

"I gotta. Education and all."

"Dove Maria Carmen Coleman!" Crow's voice boomed from down the hall, Dove jumped a bit as both she and Kai turned to the door, "You're going to be late for school!"

"Lo siento mamá!" Dove called as she pulled on her jacket and glared at Kai, "You're gonna make me late!" She than rushed out of her room seeing Crow finish putting something together and offering her hand, "Where's dad?" Dove asked as she handed her bag to her mother.

"He already left for work, he wanted to see you off but he had to go." Crow said as she put her daughter's lunch in her bag before handing it back, "Were you having hallucinations again? I heard you talking to someone."

"A small one mom." Dove admitted, "It's okay don't worry."

"Honey I.." Dove then snagged a few things of toast before kissing her mother's cheek and rushed out the door.

"BYE MOM!" And Dove was out of the door before Crow could stop her. Crow sighed as she leaned over the counter. She couldn't help but be worried.

Dove huffed heavily as she held the bag over her shoulder as she entered the school. Luckily the doorway that was made between her school and Hole wasn't that busy this morning. Fixing her bag a bit she placed a hand in her pocket, she wasn't all that surprised as another student approached her. Her long two toned hair in pig tails as one was blonde and one was brunette. She cooed a bit as she hugged Dove happily, who was clearly taller than her.

"Good morning Dove!"

"Morning Kayko."

"How's my favorite cousin?" Kayko asked as Dove rolled her eyes a bit, "Oh we got physicals today."

"Really? Ugh today of all days." Dove huffed as the two walked through the halls.

"Why? I'm finally getting less twiggy!"

"You look like a girl version of your dad but with boobs and freckles." Dove commented. Kayko gasped a bit as she puffed her cheeks.

"Whatever!" The two headed to their lockers as Dove messed with her bag a bit grabbing her key, "Anyway have you heard from Kai lately?"

"This morning." Dove said with a huff, "Almost made me late. He's been showing up a lot lately it's kinda annoying."

"Really?" Kayko asked as she grabbed her notebook, jotting down what she was saying, "Did he say anything?"

"Just something about me coming to school." Dove huffed again, once she got her locker open she and Kayko backed up as a flood of envelopes fell out. The two stared in shock as a few other kids turned to see what was happening. Dove groaning as she scooped the rest out to put her bag inside before grabbing what she needed for the morning. Kayko grabbing a few of the envelopes as she skimmed through.

"Looks like more love confessions."

"Why me?"

The day continued as usual and studies were the same the physical was something Dove was dreading. She noticed she wasn't built like the other girls in her school, or in her family either. She noticed she was more built like her father than anything. Kayko and her mom Yue would just tell Dove that it's a strawberry shape but Dove wasn't sure on that. She stared out at the window as she tapped her pen, not really paying all that much attention till she heard her name called.

"Coleman." Dove perked up a bit as the other students turned to her, "Can you answer the question please?"

"H-Huh?" Dove blinked as the other students laughed, Dove cleared her throat a bit, "M-Mind repeating it please, I apologize."

"Of course..." The teacher said with a bit of a salty tone, "The question was, what was The Cross Eye's Boss' theorized name?"

Oh this was easy, "His name was Kai."

"Wrong. It was believed that he and Aikawa were the same." The teacher scolded. Dove scrunched her nose up before standing and slamming her hands to the table. She didn't know why but she felt so much rage in her body in that moment, "MISS COLEMAN!"

"As someone whose from The Hole with connections to this knowledge I know what I'm saying. His name was Kai. He and Aikawa were two separate people despite sharing the same body and face. Only the cross marks on Kai's eyes was the only indication that you can tell who was who in that given moment." Dove pointed to her eyes as she spoke before continuing, "Assuming such a thing is stupid!"

"Are you done Miss Coleman?" The question sounded more like a statement, Dove glared at the teacher before sitting herself back down and crossed her arms.

"I will be once you get your facts right." Dove barked. Of course that got Dove in trouble for and was told to be seen after lecture. Of course Dove got an ear full for telling a teacher off and her parents would be told of this. She was kinda used to it at this point.

The day soon finished faster than she thought. She stretched a bit as she grabbed her bag from her locker. Once the door was shut she saw an upper classmate looking to her as he was rubbing his arm. Crow rose a brow looking to him.

"Can I help you?"

"Umm.. Did you get my letter?" He asked, Dove sighed a bit as she rubbed her neck.

"Yes and I'm sorry but it isn't gonna work out. I live in Hole. Not here." Dove started to walk out of the school as the male student followed.

"B-But you go here!" He said puzzled. Dove rolled her eyes as she continued.

"Yes that's because my mom is part of the En Family now back off." Dove huffed once more till the student grabbed her arm.

"Please just go out with me!" He begged. Dove kicked her foot up and pushed him back with her foot. Getting him to let her go, before he could do anything Dove was already gone.

She groaned as she plopped herself onto the bed as she laid there. Her mom had just told her that her  dad wanted to talk to Dove when he got home and she wasn't looking forward that. She hugged her pillow before she noticed something in her closet. She got up and looked inside seeing a weird case. She lifted it seeing there was a handle sticking out, puzzled she reached for it.

"Where did..?" She asked herself as she grabbed it, something about it felt... Familiar. She carefully pulled the handle back as she heard a sound of a blade as she pulled the handle back. Shocked to see it was a pretty large knife, "What the.."

"Dove." A familiar voice boomed through as she quickly put the knife away.

"Y-Yeah?"

"It's your dad, can we talk?"

Oh crap.

"Yeah give me a moment I'm indecent." Dove said as she quickly put the knife away into it's home and covered the case. Putting the cover over it before she shut the door. She then quickly changed into some pajama pants and shirt before she hopped onto her bed. Feeling her pony tail bounce as she plopped onto the bed, "Okay now we're good."

Kaiman opened the door after a moment and poked his head in, if he had brows he'd be raising them at her. A look of confusion of course at first before he smiled to her softly, "Hey I heard today wasn't that great." Dove rubbed her neck as she hugged her legs.

"Yeah.." She said softly as her father joined her on the bed. He studied her a moment before she spoke, "I don't know why I got so heated today. Like.. Sure I could have talked to the teacher better but I got so mad.."

Kaiman sat back a bit as he huffed out a laugh, "Well this whole.. Cross Eyes Boss thing you and Kayko have been looking into had been on your minds a lot lately."

If only her father knew.

"Have you been feeling okay?" Kaiman asked as he had his daughter look at him. Opening her eye lids a bit to check as he did his usual check up stuff with patients.

"I'm fine dad.."

"Your mom told me you apparently heard him today."

Dove pouted a bit as she turned her head, "Everyone hears voices time to time it's no big deal."

"Not everyone vomits sludge, Dove." Kaiman said with a concerned look, "Hun I can't help but worry for you. You were so small and fragile when you were born." Kaiman sighed some as Dove turned to him, "So all it was was an anger burst?"

"Well... I also almost punched a kid during our physicals today." Dove said sheepishly. Kaiman just stared at her a moment before she continued, "In MY defense they were being gross and making nasty comments to me. I held back."

"What comments were they making?"

"They were making fun of how I'm tall for a girl my age. I'm what? Five foot six? That's average I'm the same height as Aunt Nikaido! And another girl made a joke about how I'm almost a c cup! I didn't ask for this!" Dove then plopped her face into her pillow as she groaned, "They said I look more like a muscular boy than anything!" Kaiman chuckled a bit as he patted his daughter's back, "I don't wanna be a fridge..!"

"Fridge?" The lizard man laughed as Dove turned to look at him offended, "Honey... Lemme tell you one thing." Kaiman then moved Dove's bangs out of her face, "I don't know how tall you're gonna be, but Noi is the same height as I am. She's muscular and even I can admit pretty. Not as pretty as your mom but pretty." Kaiman rolled his shoulders as he continued, "You're gonna be a beautiful young woman one day and you're already a pretty girl. You look so much like your mom don't worry about it." Kaiman stood up as he groaned some, "I'll tell you being old and as tall as me is a pain." Dove laughed some as she sat up.

"Thanks dad."

"No problem. You already had dinner?"

"Yeah."

"Brush your teeth and such?"

"Yes dad!" Dove laughed.

"Okay okay.." Kaiman went to the door as he turned to her, "Te quiero, Dove. Que duermas bien."

Dove smiled as she held her feet, it was nice seeing that her dad caught on with Spanish. Tool him long enough but he finally got it.

"También te quiero, papá. Buenas noches." Kaiman smiled as he shut Dove's door. Dove waited till he was in his and her mother's room before she got back up and went to the closet, quietly opening it and looked inside. The covered case was still there. She hesitantly pulled it out as she looked it over. Something about it felt right.

She grabbed one of the knives and pulled it out of it's place. Surprised on how large the blade was as she looked at it.

"T-This a hunting knife?" She asked herself. Curious she put the knife away and checked the other, seeing it was a double she quickly put it away as she grabbed her booklet from the Church and Museum of Hole, "There's gotta... Ah ha.." Dove whispered seeing the case matched what Kai used to have. Why does she have Kai's case.

"It's a present." She jumped out of her skin as she turned to see Kai himself, sitting on her bed as he was pretty relaxed, "Aren't you pleased?"

"I can't have a knife case in my room! You're insane!" Dove whisper yelled as she gestured to the knife case. Kai rolled his shoulders as Dove picked the case up as she wiggled it at him, "How did you get this?"

"Easy. Used the lake."

"The.. Lake?"

"It's why I asked if you were leaving this morning. You're going to need that." Kai said calmly as he turned to Dove who looked quite puzzled, he couldn't help but chuckle, "I understand the confusion though. I'll explain another time." He then stood up, placing his hands on Dove's shoulders as he looked at her eye to eye. Dove could feel something warm going over her eyes as he spoke calmly, "Do not let anyone find out about this. You want to understand what is happening to you correct?"

Dove nodded.

"Then I need to you listen to everything I tell you."
