Like Caramel for Chocolate

Summary:

You're not the average Alpha. Soft spoken, mild mannered, somewhat meek. Bakugou isn't the typical Omega. Loud, gruff, brash, aggressive. From the outside, it looked like the perfect match. Even your scents blended beautifully, his caramel and your chocolate smelling warm and sweet and good.

But despite how good you seem together, things aren't going well. Despite dating since high school, Bakugou has never even mentioned mating or marriage. You two haven't even shared a single heat or rut in all the years you had been together. You had to consider. Maybe... Maybe it's time to end this.

Chapter 1: Rumination

Chapter Text

Bakugou had never been a traditional omega. He wasn’t soft, wasn’t gentle, wasn’t particularly nurturing, and certainly wasn’t delicate. Maybe that’s why the two of you worked together so well. After all, you were not a stereotypical alpha. Your frame wasn’t muscular. You were soft spoken. You had always been labeled the mother hen of your friend group, always fussing and making sure everyone was warm and fed. Your scents even blended beautifully. His warm caramel and applewood blended seamlessly into your dark chocolate cherry fragrance.
He was rough and protective, assertive in every action. You were perfectly fine letting him take the lead most of the time. It was like you two were made for each other. The perfect couple.

You only wished you could believe that too.

You stood outside Katsuki’s apartment and rapped on the door, shifting your weight from foot to foot. Your hands gripped the bags of heat supplies tightly. You heard muffled noises and cursing from the other side of the door. Before you could knock again, it was ripped open and you were greeted by your flushed, growling omega.

“What the FUCK do you want?” He snarled, clearly irritated.

You tried not to take it personally. It was like this every time he had a heat. “Hey, Katsu. I just wanted to make sure you were okay. Bring you some supplies.” You held out the bags you had been carrying. “Got some gatorade, some plain water, beef jerky, dried squid, candy, the usual really. The other bag has a few shirts and a blanket I scented, if you want them.”

He snatched the bags, glaring at you the whole while. “I don’t need your shitting fucking scent stinking up my nest! Now get out of here and leave me the fuck alone, already! Shitty Alpha!” The door slammed in your face. You closed your eyes, taking in a deep breath and slowly letting it all out again before turning and walking away.

You knew what Bakugou was like. You’d been courting since high school, after all. Every heat he had was like this. He snarled, swore, and wouldn’t let you or almost anyone else in his space. He never asked for anything to be scented, though you always offered to. He never wanted you around, not even for comfort; let alone actually helping him find relief. Hell, even normally he never let you scent him. He growled about not wanting to stink like an owned pet. He ignored you when you mentioned you wouldn’t mind him scenting you instead.

It hadn’t used to bother you, it really didn’t. But you had dated for seven years now, and there had been no progress. You had known Katsuki would be a challenge, that he wasn’t your typical omega. He was rough and tough and wanted to be the top hero. You knew he wouldn’t want to settle down and take care of pups at home. Nowadays you wondered if he ever wanted to settle down at all. You wondered if it might be because he just didn’t want to settle down with you.

You weren’t a stereotypical alpha. You tended to be meek, and soft spoken. You never wanted to be a hero, instead working as a teacher; enjoying nurturing young children. Maybe that was the problem. You knew Bakugo didn’t want an alpha to try and own him, but maybe he wanted someone who could challenge him. More and more it felt like he was significantly more comfortable with his alpha friends like Kirishima and Hanta instead of you. They joked and ribbed each other. You knew from high school that his friend group had sometimes scented each other in a pack way. They roughhoused, played sports, went to bathhouses… His Alpha friends had seen more of his naked body than you ever had. You let the thought roll around in your mind, trying to coax a reaction from yourself and your inner alpha. Anger, jealousy, any of the primal emotions you used to know so well. Instead, you were filled with the emotions that had been your constant companions for months now. Sadness, apathy, an aching loneliness that felt like it had been stitched into your soul.

Your feet felt like lead as you slowly made your way up the three flights of stairs towards your apartment. You locked the door behind you, letting out a long sigh as you pressed your forehead against the cool wood. You longed for a life where you would come home to something other than a cold quiet apartment. You wanted a mate to greet you. You wanted the chaos of pups; the running feet and happy squeals. Maybe even a pet. You had thought that would be the life you’d one day share with Katsuki. You had thought. Now? You didn’t know anyone else who had courted so long without giving each other mating bites. No one you had heard of had been in a relationship for years without sharing a single heat or rut. You loved Katsuki with your whole heart, you truly did. But was your love enough? Could you go on living in this stale limbo that pretended to be a relationship?

You were startled by a buzzing from your pocket. Glad of the distraction, you finally pulled yourself away from the door to answer.

“Y/N speaking.”

“Y/N!”

You winced as your mother’s voice blared out of the speaker. You loved your mother, but you weren’t exactly in the mood for where you knew the conversation would go. But there was no getting out of at least a short chat now.

“Hi, Mom.”

“I have the most exciting news!”

You blinked and raised your eyebrows as you wandered over to your kitchen counter, taking a seat on a barstool.

“Oh?” you replied cautiously.

“I was just talking with the Yokomadas, remember them?”

You hummed noncommittally. The Yokomadas had been one of your neighbors growing up. You had played with their children and your families ran in the same social circles.

“Well apparently one of their cousins has a boy, an omega, who they’re looking for a good match for. I forget the surname, but apparently a respectable family with a good lineage.”

You sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of your nose. “Mom, I’m not looking for a matchup right now. I have an omega.”

Your mother’s voice turned hard and sharp. “Sure. An omega I’ve never met. An omega you’ve never bonded with, let alone taken any steps toward marriage. I know you want pups, and you aren’t getting any younger.”

You bit your lip hard, clutching the hem of your shirt as you tried to control your emotions. Taking a deep breath, you tried again. “Mom…”

“Y/n, listen.” Your mother interrupted. “Just go on the omiai. I won’t pressure you about accepting, but I think it would be good for you just to go. Realize there are other options out there for you. You may not be… traditional… but there are plenty of omegas out there that would be happy with you and would make you happy.”

You twisted the hem of your shirt, silence growing as you thought. Your mother wasn’t saying anything new. On your lonelier days, like today, the words sounded eerily similar to your own thoughts. If this conversation had happened on any other day, you knew how forceful your ‘No!’ would be. But today was today.

“Okay.” Your whisper seemed more like a shout into the quiet. “I’ll do it. I’ll go.”
