Chapter 1: Prologue: New Beginnings

Chapter Text

Clay would rather be doing anything else right now. He would rather be having ‘family bonding time with his sister. He would rather be sitting at that prissy ass high school with his prissy ass uncle.

However, he wasn’t. Unfortunately, Clay was sitting on the bus holding his beaten-up moss-colored backpack in front of him, with kids yelling as if the nation was being blown up. The ride to the new school felt like hours when in reality it was only around fifteen minutes.

All he could do to distract himself was stare out of the window. He took in the fields and fields of flowers, all of the farms they passed by, the pale sunlight hitting the barns so that they matched the fields of marigolds. He made note of everything and everyone he could. Along the way, he noticed a young ginger child running through one of the fields with his cat. Clay wished he could have that freedom. But no.

Soon enough, they’d arrived at an equally prissy brick building. It was so early, he felt half dead-- but he got out of the bus anyway.

At least it wasn’t the Catholic school down the way, right?

That’s what he thought to himself as he walked inside. At least he didn’t have to deal with their fucking Jesus bullshit.

Clay looked at his schedule slowly walking to his first class. He didn’t find the campus he was on interesting so he didn’t pay much attention. Walking up the concrete stairs, Clay made it to his first class, history. He never really liked history. It just-- bored him half to death. Especially the parts without war.

As he sauntered to the door and gazed at the classroom, he could already tell it would be a living nightmare. He made his way to sit in the back corner of the class, away from all of the cliques scattered about.

Clay sat down with his backpack on the floor, watching the clock tick. He was so tired. During the summer, all he would do was play Minecraft and sleep in, but now he had to wake up in the ungodly hours of the morning just to learn about countries and dictators. He started zoning out, thinking about how much he missed summer already.

Clay started to drift off. He put his head in his hands, thinking about how he would rather be running in a field like the kid he saw earlier than being in this shitty class-room.

I wish I were at home, I wish I had friends, I wish that-

“Mr. Clay!” Clay jolted up looking at his history teacher, Mr. Ethan, standing over his desk. “Already sleeping in class, you could at least wait until the second day. I would expect more from you considering your uncle is the principal of the high school.” Giggles could be heard from around the classroom.

This was going to be a long year.

-----------

It felt like an eternity, but soon enough it was time for lunch. Since Clay ate a big breakfast and the school lunches weren’t all too good, he decided to walk around the campus. He made it to the gym field and saw a bunch of kids playing football. Clay had always liked football so he decided to at least try it out.

As he was walking to grab a football, he was tackled to the floor.

“Oh, sorry dude.” He heard a low voice speak. Clay looked up to see a guy around his age extend a hand downwards to help him up.

“Don’t worry about it, man.” Clay took his hand and got pulled up off the ground. The boy had dark brown hair and eyes that you couldn’t quite tell the color of.

“My name’s Clay,” he said, extending his hand to shake the others.

“Nick, though my friends call me Sapnap.” He shook Clay’s hand back and looked down slightly at the floor. “Even though I don't have friends.” Clay thought for a moment before taking the football from Nick’s hands.

“Well Sapnap, I’d be happy to be your first. Now go long.” Nick’s face lit up at the fact he now had a friend and started running in the direction where Clay threw the ball. As it spun through the air, Nick jumped and lifted his arms above his head to try and catch it and succeeded.

“Nice throw!” Sapnap yelled

“Nice catch!” Clay responded

The two laughed about it before the school bell rang, signifying the end of lunch and the beginning of class. Clay shuffled through his pockets to find his class schedule, not wanting to be late for his next class.

“What’s your next class?” Sapnap asked with his schedule already out. Clay, finally finding his paper, looked up at him.

“Math.” Nick looked down at his paper and smiled,

“Looks like you’ll have me in there as well” Sapnap giggled, Clay was just excited that he didn’t have to spend the most boring class alone.

“I’m glad to have a friend now, thank you, Clay.”

“No problem Sapnap, I’m glad to have a friend too.” The two laughed as they started walking to their class.

-----------------------------

As the years went on Sapnap and Clay only grew closer. Having sleepovers nearly every weekend, practicing football, and even the occasional cuddling. They are homies after all. Nick was always there for Clay, and Clay would be there for Nick. The two were inseparable through middle school and things were no different at the start of high school.

Nothing could tear them apart.

Not even the start of high school. If anything the two were even closer than before, if that were even possible. Almost immediately Sapnap and Clay went to football tryouts. They weren’t competing; they were cheering each other on, hoping that the other would be team captain.

“Alright Nick you’re up!” the coach yelled letting Sapnap know that it was his turn. The task was simple. Throw the football as far as you can and the farthest would be team captain*.

Sapnap took a step back throwing the ball with all of his might. It went approximately 50 feet, Clay cheered for him seeing as that was the farthest someone threw all day.

“Impressive!, Alright Clay you’re up.” Clay stepped up to where he needed to throw the ball. He took a deep breath, stepped back, and threw the ball as far as he could. It practically flew through the air and landed at the marking point.

55 feet.

Sapnap saw this and cheered louder than Clay could ever, he was so excited for his best friend and ran up to hug him. Since that was the last person and tryouts were full, Clay won team captain.

“You did it, Clay! You did it!” Nick shouted for all to hear whilst hugging Clay. The coach walked up to Clay with a spark of hope in his eyes.

“You’re exactly what we needed you’re all we could've dreamed for.” he paused for a moment, “Hey Clay, did you know that the team captain always gets a nickname? What if we were to call you Dream?”

Clay looked up from Sapnap hugging him “That would be nice, I’ve never had a nickname before.”

From that day on, nearly everyone that looked up to Clay would call him “Dream.” Dream liked the nickname, he even got a jersey with his new name on it. He had also thought that ‘the Sapnap and Dream duo’ had a better ring to it than ‘the Nick and Clay duo.’

Dream and Sapnap had liked it at the high school. They weren’t necessarily the “popular kids,” but they did have a lot of admirers.

Maybe this was something they could get used to.
