Chief’s Hut, White Wolf Tribe, South Pole, 90 AG
Hakoda breathed in deeply as Kya lay a comforting hand on his shoulder, as distraught as he himself was. 6-year-old Sokka and sweet Katara were staying with Kya’s friend Ticasuk and her two daughters for the night, much to Sokka’s vexation. In the igloo sat his mother Kanna, wife Kya and dearest friend and ally, Bato. They sat in silence as they all processed the events of the day and what they might mean for the tribe. Reasonably Hakoda had known that though the Fire Nation had thoroughly attempted and succeeded in their extermination of the Southern Water Benders the blessings of Tui and La could not be taken away so easily. He had heard rumours of Water Bending children being born across the Southernmost continent, and of the raids which followed . He knew that hiding a water bending child, of keeping a tribe harbouring a waterbender safe, was nigh impossible. If at all. And Katara had just split an ice flow with her hands alone.
“So. What do we do now?”
Hakoda looked up at Bato’s words.
“Katara is not safe here.” Kya stated plainly.
The thought that Hakoda could not protect his own child made him feel worthless inside.
“Nor is the tribe safe with her here. We know what happens to bending children. And to their villages.” Bato stated.
Hakoda pursed his lips. Just because it was true did not mean that he wished to hear it. He rose angrily.
“And then what would you suggest Bato? That I exile my four-year-old daughter and leave her to the spirits’ whims? That I leave her outside as she sleeps and let the winds take care of this issue? Is that what I ought to do Bato? Because if you think so then perhaps you should leave this igloo!”
Silence fell over the room as Bato looked to the ground. At his side Hakoda could hear Kya suck in a deep breath. Hakoda sat again.
“Now if anyone has any useful ideas which won’t result in the death of my daughter, I’m listening.”
The silence grew thicker.
It seemed to go on for a full avatar cycle before his mother spoke up.
“There is one thing we could do. It would be dangerous. But Katara would be safe, and the tribe would continue as it is, without a hidden child of Tui and La.”
“What are you suggesting Saki?”
Hakoda’s mother hesitated slightly before continuing.
“I am suggesting that I return to the North. And that Katara comes with me. I had never wished to return there. But in a situation such as this, I fear it may be the only solution.”
“What? Mother, you, what?”
“Oh son. Brave little wolf. You need never have known that I was not originally of the South. I never intended to return after all.”
“She would be safe ‘Koda. The tribe and Katara both. It is as good of a solution as we are going to get.”
Hakoda did not hear Bato’s words. Only a faint buzzing in his ears.
He felt himself being shaken gently.
“Bato is right my love. Katara cannot stay here. Not only would she be in constant danger of the Fire Nation finding out about her, but she would never be a true waterbender. With no master to teach her she could become a threat in her own right to herself and those she loves, even involuntarily.”
“Kya, you cannot possibly agree with this? They are suggesting that our daughter leaves us for the other side of the world. We might never see her again. Or worse they may not even make it!”
“What other choice do we have Hakoda! Our daughter will never be safe here so long as the war rages on! If they come for her then what? She will be dead, or worse formed into a pawn for them to utilise to their own devices! We shall certainly not be spared, and Sokka what of him? Best case scenario, he will be an orphan and his sister may return to the South to hunt his children down someday! How could we justify that Hakoda?! Tell me.”
She was right, as she usually was but…
“She’s our daughter Kya.” He laid his head in his hands. “Our baby girl”
A warm embrace enveloped him, followed by another set of arms and then one more. All the people he loved comforting him as the unthinkable was finalized. His heart, his heritage and his voice of reason.
“We will begin preparations tomorrow. Within the moon’s turn Katara shall be headed towards our sister tribe.”

90 AG: Hut of Arviq and Ticasuk, White Wolf Tribe, South Pole
The fire was warm and Katara played with the drinking water that Aunty Tica had provided them with. Niyok and Nutha were playing a clapping game on the other side of the igloo while Sokka sulked at the side of the igloo farthest away from them all. Unfortunately for him there were not many boys his age, and he certainly never appreciated Katara or Aunty Tica’s daughters. Uncle Arviq was out with several the other warriors guarding their small settlement. And Mum and Dad had both gone to do something or another with Grangran. Katara really couldn’t care less however, because today she had found out that she could move water and ice without touching it! She giggled again as the water floated up and down and around as she wished it.
“Shut up ‘Tara! No one cares about your stupid magic water!” Sokka shouted at her from the bundle of fur he’d snuggled into while sulking.
Katara’s lip wobbled once, twice, and she fled the igloo crying.
It didn’t register to her that Niyok and Nutha stopped their clapping, nor that Aunty Tica called after her with concern. Sokka ruined everything! He was always mean for no reason and thought he was better than her just ‘cause. It wasn’t fair! All she wanted was him to like her, maybe play games with her sometimes like Niyok and Nutha did. She wiped her eyes and snuffled into the sleeves of her parka.
Katara was so caught up in her emotions that she didn’t realise when she water-bended a hole in the snow wall surrounding the village. She didn’t even realise when she reached the end of the ice sheet. She only knew when she suddenly found herself without any footing as she fell into La’s embrace.

90 AG: Spirit Oasis, North Pole
Yue looked around once more. She had snuck away from her night nurse when she heard Tui calling to her. Her Spirit Mother did not often talk to Yue, and never had she called on her with such urgency. As such the 6-year-old had rushed away at the first call that the Moon spirit made. Now all she had to do was to get past the two men who guarded the spirit oasis. Yue bit her lip and looked about before breaking off a chunk of decorative ice and throwing it as far as she could down the hall in the other direction. Quite stereotypically the two men looked away as one went to check the disturbance out. Yue snuck past the remaining warrior with concerning ease.
The Spirit Oasis had always felt like a second home to Yue and perhaps in a sense it was, Tui had given her some of her chi after all. So, it stood to reason Yue would feel comfortable here. Yue made her way to the pool itself and knelt down in front of the fish who were spirits.
“Hello Spirit Mother.”
Hello my little moonbeam
Spirit Mother was the only mother that Yue could remember, her own mother having passed when she was 3 alongside her never-living baby brothers.
“Why do you need me Spirit Mother? If I may ask. It is very late, and I am tired.”
I know my moonbeam. But this cannot wait.
Yue looked up at the moon curiously.
My other half has found their chosen. La’s own has fallen into his embrace. Saddened by her loneliness and uniqueness.
“That’s not good Spirit Mother!”
Indeed it is not my moonbeam. But do not fear sweetling. Drops of water came up to caress Yue’s face. For she shall find a friend soon.
“She will?”
Yes moonbeam. By years end she will arrive here. And you and her shall be almost as close as I and La. You are both our children after all. Sisters.
Yue gasped. She had always wanted a sibling. But father had never remarried. (The Chief had taken his wife’s death as a sign the spirits were angry at him for not being thankful enough that they gifted his first-born with life.)
“I’ve always wanted a sister! I shall be the most wonderful sister ever and we shall be the best of friends!”
Yue felt as if the water warmed around her as Tui embraced her.
I am sure that you shall be my sweet one. But you must do something more than simply being her friend.
“What Spirit Mother?”
You must ensure that the Avatar’s destined master learn all forms of waterbending and the culture and history of the poles. For she is chosen by we two for this role and her alone. Can you do that for me little moonbeam?
Yue frowned uncertainly.
“I don’t know if I can Spirit Mother, but I’ll try.”
Good girl. Now I believe that humans need to sleep.
Yue nodded and turned to leave.
“I promise I shall not disappoint you Spirit Mother! Goodnight!”
Goodnight moonbeam
Notes:
So new story! It's probably going to be a bit of a slow burn but hey this fandom can handle that! First section will focus mainly on Yue and Katara in the North Pole and then we'll move to see what's going on in Caldera. And THEN we'll get to Zuko and Katara meeting. It'll take a while is the main thing.
But we have a little moonbeam and a whirlpool meeting eachother sooo.
Yue in this fic is certainly still feminine, gentle and soft, but she's also got a personality and will of her own. Because, she ought to really, Kanna and Katara will be a good influence on her growing up, as shall Mama Tui of course. Comments and Kudos are appreciated!

The Kai, 90 AG
Lu Ten was completely, utterly and thoroughly bored. He was 19 and instead of fighting for his country, spreading the glory and superior knowledge of the Fire Nation across the world, he was on a boat. A big boat granted. But still a boat. Not only had his Father not allowed Lu Ten into officer training until he was 18, two whole years after the age of admittance. But his training had taken an entire year to everyone else’s 4 months. Granted Lu Ten had to learn about the Army, Navy and the Home Guard, but still it never should have taken so long! And then, instead of going to the battle front Grandfather Azulon had sent him on a certainly fruitless voyage to search for the long missing Avatar. Considering it had been over 90 years since they’d last laid eyes on one Lu Ten greatly doubted that he would find them. Lu Ten growled in annoyance.
He might not have been the son of his father’s late wife. But he was still the heir to the throne. Just because his mother was Earth Nation Father and Grandfather didn’t want him on the frontlines. As if he would betray the fire nation! Lu Ten was certain that this was the true reason they kept him off of the front lines. Not out of concern for his safety or the line of succession. But because his blood made him a potential liability. Annoyed he stormed out to inspect his troops. As he left his cabin a young seaman called him.
“What?” he snapped, very much not in the mood for this.
The seaman started
“Forgive me, your imperial highness, but I was asked to notify you if you left your cabin that a great storm is occurring. We cannot feel it here of course. Um, well, everything is in order and the deck is being cleared.”
“And you didn’t think that I might want to be on the bridge during this!” Lu Ten grumbled to himself.
“No matter. I shall attend there now. Dismissed.”
The seaman saluted “Your Imperial Highness!”
Lu Ten marched purposefully to the bridge still grumbling. As he made his way out of the heart of his cruiser it progressively became harder and harder to walk as the swell of the waves became more and more obvious. Finally, Lu Ten made it there without any more interruptions, though only a dimwit would interrupt an annoyed imperial firebender.
His captain noticed his presence immediately and saluted.
“Your Imperial Highness. The deck has been cleared and all delicate items tied down. We are prepared for anything La and Vayu have to throw at us.”
Lu Ten nodded in approval and watched on as the crew continued to wait out the storm.
Around 20 minutes passed before the woman who was watching the east cried out.
“Sir there is a ship! It appears to be in trouble.”
“What Nation?” The captain asked.
“It appears to be water tribe sir.”
The Captain snorted. “Never mind them then. Their spirit can sort them out.”
Lu Ten looked over at the captain in derision before turning to the officer.
“May I see.”
She saluted and handed over the telescope “Your Imperial Highness.”
Lu Ten put his eyes to it and looked around for the water tribe boat. When he found it, he was shocked. It was a flimsy thing, barely more than a raft, and aboard it much to his horror Lu Ten could see no one but an old lady who was curling her savage clothes about a bundle. Lu Ten’s lips tightened.
He turned to the crew stationed at the door. “Pull alongside them and get them aboard.”
“Sir?” The Captain interrupted him.
“That is an old lady Captain. I do not know how you were raised but I was not raised to let civilian elders drown in storms.” The Captain opened his mouth as if to contest Lu Ten’s statement. “Not even savages Captain.”
“I…Yes your imperial highness.”
Lu Ten turned back to telescope and tensed. If they did not get there in time even this savage woman deserved a witness to her death.

Kanna was rightfully petrified. They had set off well over a fortnight ago and had just hit their first storm. Unfortunately, the two warriors accompanying them Adlartok and Taktuq were not used to such storms and had barely been able to tie down the sails before they were thrown overboard by the waves of La. Kanna could not help but feel that Tui and La had abandoned them as she huddled around her granddaughter wishing that they had never gone north. They should have taken the sign of Katara having washed up on the shores of the ice sheet nearest to the village as it was meant. That Katara was not meant to leave the South. Instead, it had only solidified her son and daughter in law’s decision to send their daughter north despite the risk.
This feeling was relieved once Kanna saw the ship through the torrential rain and wind. They were saved. The horror returned with intensity when Kanna realised that this was not in fact a Earth Kingdom trading ship, but a Fire Nation Battle Cruiser. She gripped Katara to her tightly. They were not saved, they were doomed.
She was still frozen when a figure with a rope tied about them descended from the ship as it pulled alongside them.
“Grab on!” The fire nation soldier shouted at her and Kanna gripped Katara tightly, enveloped in memories of the raids that had taken away her beloved Hama.
“Now woman!”
She snapped out of her daze and moved towards him. Hesitating only slightly she moved to remove Katara from her grasp.
“Please, take my granddaughter first.”
She saw as dark golden eyes widened and the fire nation soldier took into his arms her dear little whirlpool with more tenderness than she’d ever imagined anyone from the fire nation capable of having.
“I’ll be back for you お婆さん”.
Kanna nodded at the man. Not expecting to see him again as he rose with Katara. She would live at least, but what kind of life would it be?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As they made it closer to the boat Lu Ten rushed to the deck where preparations were being made to rescue the elderly water tribe woman. When he got there the 5 seamen there were fighting over who would have to go overboard and risk their own skin for the savage. Lu Ten rolled his eyes.
“I ordered this so I might as well go over.”
“Your Imperial Highness please don’t!” His crew were all over themselves trying to stop him from carrying out his own orders. But nobody can touch the imperial person first so before they knew it Lu Ten had a rope tied securely about him and was moving himself to the edge of the ship. He handed the rope over to his seamen and women.
“Do try not to drop me.”
And with that he lowered himself over the side of the ship and began to lower himself down. It seemed to take hours before he made it to the edge of the ship (if it could even be called that). He shouted to the woman to grab onto his hand. Instead of moving she seemed to curl in on herself further. Lu Ten couldn’t tell if the woman was deaf, dumb or just frozen in fear. He shouted again and the elderly woman unfurled herself, revealing what she had been protecting. Lu Ten was handed a little girl. There was a child being handed over by her grandmother to him. Lu Ten’s heart all but melted as teary blue eyes looked up at him from his grasp.
Looking up he reassured the water tribe elder he’d return for her before pulling on the rope and being hauled up. As soon as he reached the side of the ship, he passed the little girl to one of the crew before going right back over. Though he had said that he’d come back for her the water tribe elder looked surprised to see him. He held out an arm.
“Now you!”
Still shocked the old woman rose and grabbed on to him. She was certainly heavier than the little girl and the waterlogged savage clothing didn’t help. He gripped her harder and the woman tensed. Finally, they were pulled over the side.
Lu Ten didn’t linger and quickly ordered his crew back inside. He grabbed the little girl who was clinging to his crew member’s leg like a lifeline. Lu Ten frowned when he noticed that the crew member in question was ignoring the little girl, even attempting to edge away from her. As he picked her up the girl almost melted into him. He held out an arm to help her grandmother inside. As they made their way in Lu Ten could practically feel the judging eyes on his back. From whom he didn’t know. But he knew that this sight was probably exceptionally strange.
Hope you enjoy! Comments and Kudos are appreciated!
Ah the fire nation during the hundred years war. So incredibly racist. Katara's first experience with the fire nation is certainly different in this fic and yup. Lu Ten is half earth kingdom and Kanna is bi and dated Hama back in the day.Also. Kanna.exe has stopped working.
Chapter Text
Katara was cold. Even when she had fallen into the sea back home, she hadn’t been as cold as she was now. They had been in the storm for an eternity it seemed to the young girl. Adlartok and Taktuq had fallen to La’s waves almost an hour ago and now she was curled up in her Grangran’s arms as La threw them across the open ocean with no end, no hope in sight. A large wave washed over them and Katara cried out as they were thrown against the mast. She whimpered as Grangran curled about her tighter. The storm was much too loud to hear anything but against her Grangran’s chest Katara could feel her humming. It was cold and it was wet and Katara was terrified, throughout her childhood she had always been able to feel La’s waves in a way that she now knew others were unable to. They had comforted her whenever she found herself unable to sleep. They comforted her no longer. Instead of the comforting rhythm of the waves La was crazed now, their energy thrashing about around her and confused her senses. The rhythm was now madness and the five-year-old didn’t understand how to deal with it. She cried out again in fear and confusion.
Then Katara gasped into her Grangran’s coat. Far away but coming ever closer there was a boat. A big, big boat. She grinned and cuddled in tighter. They were going to be alright. She curled into Grangran and went to sleep to the feeling of the big boat coming ever closer to them. When Katara next woke up it was to shouting. A man was shouting to them so loudly that Katara could hear him even within the confines of her Grangran’s parka. She couldn’t make out what he was saying but he was there. Before she knew it Katara was face to face with her element once more as she was handed over to the man. The water in her eyes somewhat concealed her vision but already Katara could tell that this was a man unlike any she had ever met. Unlike everyone back at her tribe this man was warm. He wasn’t wearing a parka, or even anything which seemed to be at all warming, but still he was hotter than the igloo in the height of summer with the fire going. She looked up at him and met eyes coloured like fire. Katara gasped then curled into the fire man. He was so warm.
Sooner than she like they reached the edge of what Katara assumed to be their boat and the fire man handed her over to a fire woman. Katara moved to snuggle into the woman who was almost as warm as the man, craving the warmth they provided as any hypothermic child would. But the woman placed her onto the cold floor of the boat before Katara could cuddle into her. Instead Katara hugged the lady’s leg and watched through squinted eyes the side of the boat which the rope that was holding the fire man led over. She clung onto the fire woman in fear. Grangran and the fire man were down there.
Thankfully it was not long before the fire man came over the edge with Grangran. He shouted at the people in red clothes to go inside before frowning at either Katara or the fire woman whose leg Katara was still attached to. Then he grabbed onto her and she curled right back into his warmth. They reached a door and then a corridor and then a room before Katara was placed down. Wiping the water from her eyes and face she was finally able to take a proper look at their saviour. He was shorter than she would’ve thought. Much shorter than Daddy. His hair was black and tied up in a funny looking Wolf’s tail, but it was the fire man’s face which really caught Katara’s attention. His skin looked more like a polar bear dog’s fur than her own and his eyes looked even more like fire than she had initially perceived them to. While she had been staring at him the fire man had been fussing over her, removing her waterlogged parka without any hesitation before seemingly catching himself and hovering his hands over her seemingly checking her for any injuries.
“Are you alright little one? Does anything hurt? What’s your name~?”
He turned to Grangran.
“What’s her name? And yours, of course. I am Lu Ten of the Fire Nation.”
Grangran seemed frozen in place and the fire man, now named Lu Ten, turned to her in concern.]
“Are you alright? You should take that coat off. It is much too wet, お婆さん and then your granddaughter. You both must be freezing.”
He frowned looked at her again and then, seemingly decided, turned back to her Grangran and said “I’ll send for some fresh clothes for you. The child will have to make do with a tunic I’m afraid.”
He inclined his head towards Grangran slightly before turning and leaving the room.
Grangran remained frozen in place even after Lulu left the room. Katara approached her slowly.
“Grangran? Are you ok?” there was no reaction.
Katara pulled on her sleeve a little.
“Grangran?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kanna started and looked down at her granddaughter. Katara. They were on a Fire Nation ship. Her waterbending grandchild was on a Fire Nation battle cruiser. Kanna almost began to hyperventilate before she caught herself. She breathed in deeply. Once. Twice. Three times. Kanna opened her closed eyes. It was alright. Everything was alright. Katara would be ok. Kanna would make sure of it. She tried to think positively. For a Fire Nation soldier the man who had rescued them had seemed nice enough. He had gone to fetch them fresh clothes Kanna remembered. That was good. Kanna was already so cold she could barely feel her fingers. Fresh clothes would be good. She moved to undress her granddaughter and then herself.
A knock on the door caused Kanna to start. Who was there? Had they returned to finally kill them. Kanna scolded herself at that thought. She was thinking irrationally. Of course, they weren’t it was probably just the clothes.
“Yes?” Kanna tried not to stutter.
A grumpy voice answered.
“Fresh clothes and towels for the water tribe.”
“Yes, thank you I’ll just fetch them.”
Kanna hesitantly made her way to the door. Leaving Katara for even a moment on this dreaded ship seemed to be a terrible thing for her. But it had to be done. She opened the door slightly and held one arm out. In return a stack of towels and clothes was kicked through the door. That was more like the reaction Kanna had been expecting when the Fire Nation ship came into sight. She bent over cursing her old back and moved towards Katara handing her a towel.
“Use this to dry off whirlpool.”
“But I’m already dry.”
And so she was. Kanna chuckled looking at the pool of water at her granddaughter’s feet.
“Then use this towel to dry that puddle and put on this shirt.”
Katara saw the shirt offered and gasped.
“Grangran look it’s red!” She shouted in amazement as she took it into one hand and popped it over her head before placing the towel on the ground and directing the water into it. Katara then twirled around in her baggy shirt made dress giggling.
“Isn’t it pretty Grangran?!”
Kanna chuckled in amusement as she dried herself off and put the Fire Nation clothes, she had been given on. They too were red much to Kanna’s distaste, but she supposed beggars can’t be choosers. Kanna started as she took in the decorations filling the cabin and the bed at its centre on which Katara was currently sitting.
“Whirlpool?”
“Yes Grangran?”
“What was the name of the young man who rescued us?”
“Lu Ten Grangran.”
At that Kanna paled dramatically. For while they might have been out of the loop for most war intelligence even those of the Southern Water Tribe knew that Lu Ten was the name of the future fire lord. And that this cabin was fit only for a prince.
Kanna’s blood grew colder than it had been in the storm as she realised that not only had they found themselves on a Fire Nation battle cruiser. They had found themselves on a vessel under the personal command of a member of the Fire Nation’s Imperial family.

The Kai, 90 AG
Lu Ten was currently standing in the mess hall, surrounded by a grumbling bunch of soldiers. The water tribe elder and child had been given fresh clothes and were currently in Lu Ten’s own cabin as he figured out where to place them. The actions of Seawoman Hiroko had concerned Lu Ten greatly. The Water Tribe might have been inferior but to push away a likely traumatised and hypothermic child! It was disgraceful. As the soldiers grumbled before him Lu Ten remembered the conversation, he had had with the Water Tribe Elder Kanna and her granddaughter Katara. The elderly woman had prostrated herself fully upon his entrance, dragging her granddaughter with her. She had apologised profusely for how she and her granddaughter had acted towards him, thanked him for his “great mercifulness and generosity” and begged his forgiveness. Now Lu Ten had been prostrated to many a time, as members of the Imperial Family often were. And that had certainly been the situation when many in his family would expect to be prostrated to. But for some reason seeing this elder and small girl on there knees before him had disturbed him deeply. Particularly when the elder had struggled to rise after Lu Ten had excused them. The little girl had jumped up of course and started to chatter at him about her pretty new dress and him being her hero, grabbing Lu Ten’s hand in the process. She was certainly the most cheerful child Lu Ten had ever met, not that he had met many children other than his cousins Zuko (7) and Azula who had just turned 5 and was already mimicking Uncle Ozai with such accuracy that it was almost disturbing.
Anyway, Lu Ten had of course forgiven the old lady and small child. After all, while every fire nation subject might know his face by heart water tribe savages could not be expected to know the same. The elder had, on Lu Ten’s request, disclosed her and her granddaughter’s names, her hands trembling throughout. Elder Kanna and Katara were Northern Water Tribe Citizens who had been visiting Elder Kanna’s sick twin sister in the Southern Water tribe. Elder Kanna had initially sailed only with her two adult grandsons but Katara had snuck onboard. Tragically the Elder’s grandsons had drowned on the journey, Lu Ten had not been able to bring himself to ask her to specify when they passed. Now Lu Ten wasn’t exactly going anywhere in specific on his completely pointless Avatar hunt so he had figured that the South Pole wasn’t going anywhere so he might as well do it later. So, Lu Ten had offered to take them to the North Pole. He could have dropped the two off at the nearest port, but something was telling him not to. Besides, leaving a nonbending Elder and her very young granddaughter to fend for themselves, even savages, struck him as deeply wrong. The shock on Elder Kanna’s face had been priceless. The entire conversation had completely gone over little Katara’s head as she had continued to chirp merrily at Lu Ten and tug his hand when he didn’t pay attention to her, as little children were want to do. As Lu Ten had expected Elder Kanna had immediately accepted and had moved to prostate herself once more before Lu Ten had caught her arm to stop her. Katara had gotten blubbery when Lu Ten had moved to leave, his crew had to be informed of the change of plans after all, so Lu Ten had asked for permission to take her with him and upon her grandmother’s agreement had taken the girl by the hand and led the bouncy little turtleduck out to meet her new crewmates.
That brought Lu Ten to his current situation. A small child gaping at the apparently massive mess hall while clinging to his hand, and almost all of his crew grumbling and staring up at him. Lu Ten had a feeling they wouldn’t be too happy to discover that they were about to reverse course and spend two moons sailing from one unbearably cold place to another unbeably cold place to drop off two water tribe savages. Lu Ten squeezed Katara’s hand and gestured at her to be quiet.
Then he rose to his full height and called his crew to attention. With all eyes on him Lu Ten began to talk.
“Soldiers. As I am sure you all know we have no set course for our journey.”
Murmuring broke out. Lu Ten glared at them and they promptly quieted.
“As such I have decided that we have nothing to lose if we reverse course and drop this lovely young lady off at her home in the North Pole.” At that he gestured to Katara who, incredibly adorably, gave a little wave at the crew.
Silence fell across the mess hall for a few moments before all hell broke loose. The crew were certainly vocal about their opinions.
He turned to Katara. “Little one, you must be starving, why don’t you grab some rice out of the galley, carefully of course.”
“Ok!” She turned to walk towards the direction Lu Ten was gesturing her towards before turning back confused. “What’s rice Lulu?” It took all of Lu Ten’s strength and severe training to stop himself from cooing at the adorableness of the situation.
“You just go in there and wait for me, I’ll show you.”
“Ok Lulu!” She exclaimed before skipping away blissfully unaware of the murderous hatred his crew was expressing towards her. Lu Ten waited until he was absolutely certain that he would not be heard by the little turtleduck before continuing on with his speech. He breathed in deeply.
“SILENCE!”
The hall fell completely quiet. His amber eyes raked over them.
“We will be on what is a likely to be a completely useless voyage for two years and you are throwing a fuss about turning around to drop off a child and an elder back at their home. I’m not asking you to march through the Si Wong Desert!”
“But they’re savages Your Imperial Highness! Why just drop them off at the nearest port and be rid of them.”
Shouts of agreement rung out.
“You want to abandon a 71-year-old nonbending elder and her 5-year-old granddaughter to find their own way back from the southernmost part of enemy territory.” He asked flatly.
“Well, they’re not the northern water tribes’ enemies are they.”
“The Northern Water Tribe has been neutral for the last 70 years. Do you think those mud-covered lunatics will take kindly to that?”
Quiet murmurs took over the crew.
“No matter. Even if you don’t agree with me, I think that you forget who exactly is in command of this ship. Who exactly I am.” Lu Ten let smoke exit his nose as he raked his eyes over the crew.
“Or do you need me to call an Agni kai against you all?” He snarled.
The crew bowed their heads.
“I thought not.”
“Helmsman! Send word to the Captain. I want this ship to set course for the north pole immediately!”
“Your Imperial Highness!”
Lu Ten smirked as he turned to the door to the galley. He was a dragon, and his word was law. Even if his crew might sometimes need some reminding of that fact. He entered to find the Little Turtleduck with sitting on the floor playing with some boiling water, blissfully unaware of the fire nation prince watching her bend from behind.
“Huh.”

The Kai, 90 AG
Katara jumped up and down in excitement. Her new favourite person in the whole wide world Lulu was taking her to explore the ship with him. She grinned as she skipped alongside the young man hand grasping his tightly. The ship was already like nothing else Katara had ever seen, with its shiny walls and the great warmth coming off of every surface. Every few steps there was a light flickering across the corridor’s walls. It was super cool! They approached two of the p0eople who were dressed in the same outfit that those on the deck had been wearing. They put their two hands together in a strange way when they saw her, and Lulu approaching and bowed down like Grangran had made Katara do earlier. She oozed with pride. Her Lulu must be a really great warrior to command so much respect at such a young age.
Lulu led her through two great doors into an even grander hall. It was most certainly the biggest internal space that Katara had ever seen, over 3 times the size of the Chief’s hut back home. She gaped as she looked around and then down at the men and woman who had stopped eating to turn towards and listen to them. At her side Lulu gestured at her to step back and be quiet.
“Soldiers…” Katara was immediately distracted by the pretty colours on which decorated the walls. She thought they might be blankets of some sort. So cool. Katara was brought out of her wondering by a tug at her hand. Lulu was gesturing at her and the people in the great room were looking at her so Katara waved. They were all very quiet in return. Katara thought that was fair, after all it didn’t seem as if there was anyone else her age on the ship so she thought that perhaps she might be imposing a bit or at the very least strange to have around. Suddenly they all started shouting and Lulu turned to her.
““Little one, you must be starving, why don’t you grab some rice out of the galley, carefully of course.”
Katara agreed with a chirp “Ok!” then she turned to walk towards the direction Lu Ten was gesturing her towards before turning back confused. She realised that she’d never heard of this rice thing that Lulu told her to get. “What’s rice Lulu?”
Lulu smiled at her softly.
“You just go in there and wait for me, I’ll show you.”
“Ok Lulu!” Katara turned to skip towards the door. She reached it and unfortunately found herself almost immediately bored. This room wasn’t nearly as cool as the rest of the ship. It was still shiny but Katara had lost her wonder over that particular aspect of the ship. She grinned when she felt the water set on top of one of the shiny things in another shiny thing. Katara lifted her hands up and guided it out giggling. She sat herself down quite happily and played with the water, making sure it didn’t ever touch the floor. She found that she quite liked this new game. Before she knew it a sound came from behind her. She turned to see Lulu standing there, eyes wide.
“Lulu! Look! I’m keeping it in the air!” She grinned at him.
“So you are! That’s really cool turtleduck!”
Katara wasn’t sure what a turtleduck was but Lulu sounded happy so she figured it couldn’t be a bad thing. She kept grinning at him as she twirled the water up and down.
“Why don’t you put that back where you found it and we can go and see your Grangran and bring her some rice? I’m sure you’re both very hungry.”
“Ok!” Katara pursed her lips as she tried to get the water back in the shiny thing she found it in. It turned out that getting the water out of the thing was much easier than putting it back in it. Eventually she managed to do so turning to grin at Lulu who in turn clapped her hands for her.
“Well done!”
Katara grinned even wider at his words.
As they left, she noticed Lulu turn to one of the fire people and that the fire person turned to open one of the shiny things and produced three bowls of something Katara didn’t recognise but figured must be the rice Lulu had talked about. At the thought of food Katara’s tummy growled. Lulu turned and chuckled at her.
“Hungry turtleduck?”
Katara nodded heartily.
Lulu offered her his hand “Then let’s go back to my cabin and eat with your Grangran then.
Katara took the offered hand and happily chirped at him about all sorts as they made their way back along the maze of corridors they’d come through.

Chapter Text
The Kai, 90 AG
Kanna sat on the bed of the Fire Nation’s Prince in a state of shock and terror. She had let the enemy take her little girl away. And had only realised after they had left the room that Katara had never heard of, let alone met anyone who didn’t hail waterbending as a blessing. She was just too young to know such things. And she was now surrounded completely by the enemy, people who had razed the South Pole to the ground hunting their waterbenders down. Kanna wrung out her hands. Though certainly not much time had passed since the two left the room to Kanna it felt like a lifetime, an considering her age that was saying something.
As the door opened Kanna jumped up faster than she had in decades and was greeted by the sight of the Prince walking in with her granddaughter somehow managing to hold three bowls in his hands.
“Grangran!” Katara chirped running up to her
“Lulu and I brought food!”
“So you did whirlpool. His Highness is surely generous.”
“It is nothing Elder Kanna, simply some rice. We were certain that you must be hungry after such a stressful experience.” Prince Lu Ten said.
“So considerate too.”
Prince Lu Ten handed a bowl over to her granddaughter and gestured for her to eat on the floor, before coming over to sit on the bed next to her and gesturing for her to join him. Kanna bowed and sat, her joints aching as she did so. Kanna was getting too old for this stress. He handed her a bowl and chopsticks which he seemingly pulled from nowhere.
“My thanks.”
The Prince nodded at her, beginning to eat his food. Only after he had begun eating did Kanna start herself. Though he had saved them not hours before, it never hurt to be careful when accepting things from one’s enemy. He eventually paused in his eating, though he did not turn to her Kanna could tell immediately that she was about to be addressed.
“Elder Kanna, I had heard that Water Tribe women are not treated as equals to men. That they are not allowed to fully learn how to waterbend. Out of curiosity, it true?” The Prince said questioningly.
Kanna pursed her lips for this was certainly not a subject she particularly wished to address. She had fled the North Pole due to its deeply entrenched misogynistic customs, and now it seemed that as a “Northern Elder” readily allowed to leave the tribe she was going to have to defend them. A certainly distasteful position to be in.
“Indeed. It is the way of things. As Tui and La have opposing roles to bring harmony and peace to the world, so must the roles of women and men be opposing yet balanced.”
He hummed. “It is unfortunate then, that your granddaughter is such a talented waterbender. She would go far in the Fire Nation.”
For a moment Kanna was certain that her heart had stopped. That she no longer remembered how to breathe.
“Indeed.” She croaked. “Though my Katara is certain to bring great honour to her ancestors by healing. She is a prodigy after all.”
The Prince hummed again.
“One of my younger cousins is a prodigy also, she formed her first spark before her second year. Very clever young girl. If we were more distantly related grandfather would certainly have arranged a marriage for us by now. As it is no woman has yet been able to live up to Grandfather and Father’s newly elevated standards.” He chuckled.
“Perhaps this is fortunate for you. You may be able to marry for love if they delay too long.”
“Hmm. Perhaps. I doubt it though. Lady Myeong of Keohso has been very impressive at the Royal Academy for Girls recently. I don’t doubt that she might be the one to almost live up to little Azula. Though as she’s only 13 for now I have at least 5 years more of freedom.”
“So the marriageable age is 18 then is it?”
“Indeed. Though both my Father, Uncle and Grandfather married much later than that, both my honoured stepmother and Aunt Ursa were 18 when they married.”
And wasn’t that just fascinating. Such different customs, and the implication that Prince Lu Ten himself might not be the son of his father’s wife. Fascinating.
“It is 16 in the Water Tribes. Though I hold hope that my Katara might be able to wait for longer. 16 still seems much too young, particularly when one reaches an age such as mine.”
“I find myself in agreement. If I do marry Lady Myeong I shall be 24, and she 18. So not so bad. But my Aunt Ursa was married off to my Uncle at the age of 18, when my uncle was 27, almost a decade her elder. I would not wish for a marriage such as that. I still remember it you know? I was 9 at the time, and I still remember how she walked to her marriage like it was a funeral. The look on her face when he kissed her…I’d never want any wife of mine to look like that. And Sozin…while his first wife was of an age as him, after their children and grandchildren died, he remarried. To an 18-year-old girl over 60 years his junior.” At that Prince Lu Ten shivered.
“Sometimes marriage can be a special kind of suffering.” She looked over to Katara, who had finished her rice and was now playing with a glass of water. “We must only try and ensure that our descendants are given the best match possible.”
“Sometimes the best match possible will never lead to happiness.”
At this Kanna herself hummed in agreement.
They sat in silence eating their rice.
“While I am perfectly happy taking you back to your tribe, I feel I must assure you that you are welcome to remain on my ship and return with us to Caldera if you wish. Azula could do with a playmate such as Katara. And she really does deserve to excel.”

5 BG, Assembly of the Elders, Laghima's Peak
As the Mother Superior of the Air Temple which had raised the previous Air Avatar, the highly esteemed Avatar Yangchen, Jamyang was used to a certain level of respect. That expectation was what made these Assemblies, rare as they were, such a vexing endeavour. Of course not truly vexing, she was an Air Nomad after all, Inner peace and all that malarkey. But one could only release so many emotions from ones earthly body before becoming exhausted, particularly when one was near fucking Tashi for more than two minutes. Jamyang breathed in deeply. Inner Peace. Inner Peace. She was too old for this. The celebrations for her 100th birthday had come and past, and with them the realisation that she was older than even the other four Elders of the Western Air Temple by over a decade. Certainly much too old to be dealing with all of this nonsense.
“Mother Superior” It was her aid the prodigy Brugmo. Despite only being 7 and her fire nation mother's blood the girl had already mastered 26 tiers of airbending and was widely expected to become one of youngest airbending masters within the next five or so years. Brugmo and her younger sister Namlang, still only 3, had been brought to the Western Air Temple by their father after their mother passed on after giving birth to the younger. The elder's quick mastery of anything they taught her was impressive enough that on her birthday the temple nuns had given her the girl to teach all of her wisdom too. Personally Jamyang thought they expected too much of the girl but who was she to turn down a glorified maidservant.
“Yes Brugmo.”
“The meeting will start soon, shouldn't we get going?”
“Yes, yes.” Jamyang heaved herself up. Though by using her airbending she was able to move quite well despite her age, it was still a workout.
They made their way to the centre of the mountaintop where all of the other elders were waiting for her. One benefit of being the eldest Airbender yet remaining was that she was never ever late. Others were just early. Her fellow elders stood as she made her way to sit, knees creaking as she did so. The others fell. And they claimed they were completely egalitarian. Jamyang internally chuckled.
“Now that the Mother Superior is here perhaps we might begin.” Fucking Tashi said sarcastic as always. Jamyang could remember his brattishness at the temple like it was only yesterday. Jamyang herself had always felt free enough at the Western Air Temple and so had never trecked much farther than there, and then to other the temples and Laghima's Peak after gaining a place on the Western Air Temple's Council of Elders a couple of decades ago. Unlike most of the Air Nomads she had never married, nor had any blood children, though she had raised many ones over her time at the Temple, devoted to the spirits and the quest for inner peace. She had held numerous babes but never seen a toddler outside of those who peeked over the edges of their parents bison's saddles as they gave over their children who had begun to bend. Jamyang was not sure whether this was something she regretted. She was able to pass on her wisdom, knowledge and judgements to the younger generations but sometimes she did wonder what it would be like to have a child, even if it was only hers until it bent for the first time.
No matter. Her thoughts had wandered again, as they were want to do nowadays.
“Brugmo. Summarise.”
“Yes Mother Superior.” Brugmos grey eyes speckled with amber sparkled as she talked. Jamyang blinked. Focus.
“...so basically they are inquiring about the wellbeing of the Avatar right now, they've yet to move on to the situation regarding the Fire Nation's new syllabus, nor the Avatar's next destination, whether he should spend a further year at the Eastern Air Temple, or be given a Sky Bison now and be moved to Southern Air Temple, as they found him in the first place.”
“Sister Iio”
“Mother Superior Jamyang.” The Mother Superior of the Eastern Air Temple might have held the same rank as her but Jamyang was still older than her by over a decade.
“Has the young Avatar shown any inclination towards any of this years calves?”
“No Mother Superior. However, he has grown close with a yet unbonded bison from last years boon.”
“I see. Then that calf is his is it not. If he has already found his bison I see no reason to delay moving him to the Southern Air Temple.”
“As you say Mother Superior.”
There was a low murmur of agreement from the other elders.
“And when shall we send him to foster for a year in each of the Nations. With what the Firelord has been doing to their education system recently, and his arguments with the late Avatar Roku, the threat to peace has not been so prominent since the time of Kyoshi.” Monk Pasang said. “If it continues in this manner, despite all of the tradition it disrupts, perhaps it would be better to have the Avatar continue his training at the temple farthest from the Fire Nation. Across the Great Sea and around the continent.”
A rumble set over the gathered elders, some agreeing with the Southern Monk, others voicing dismay at this break from tradition.
“The Avatar has always fostered with the leaders of the other Nations. And with the current make up of the Fire Nations Royal Family surely the best place for him to foster would be there. Fire Lord Sozin is getting old, no offence intended Mother Superior, and his bitterness towards the former Avatar has made him spread his hatred of other nations to his people. When the Crown Prince takes the throne this brief threat will be over.” Nun Dechen of the Western Air Temple said. She was biased to the family owing to her fire nation blood Jamyang thought. To send the young avatar there any time soon would be beyond foolish.
“You are correct Nun Dechen.” Jamyang said, the Assembly growing quiet to hear her.
“The Avatar has always fostered with the Leaders of All Four Nations throughout their childhood. Protectiveness breeds distrust after all, and while the Avatar must originate from a Nation they must never be loyal to one above the others. It is why those who are raised in court must always foster.”
“We do not have courts though Jamyang. The Avatar's life must be put before any silly tradition. Particularly one which has not been followed since before the Age of Kyoshi.” Fucking Tashi said. Jamyang's eye twitched.
“If you had allowed me to finish Tashi you would have found that to some extent I do agree.” She paused for emphasis.
“While this tradition is key, and certainly the diverse make up of the current Fire Nation Royal Family does make for a rather ideal fostering location, the violent disagreements between Fire Lord Sozin and Crown Prince Zhihao cannot be ignored, particularly those regarding the death of the Fire Lord's daughter Princess Azula the wife of the head of House Ty. Nor can the fact that Sozin, who by all accounts thinks the Fire Nation superior to all others, allowed his son and heir to marry a Northern Water Tribe Princess. The Fire Nation Royal Family's make up is too ideal for a first fostering. Too planned. I would not recommend we restore the tradition of fostering. At least not until the Fire Nation is more stable. When the Crown Prince takes the throne there is no doubt in my mind that the Fire Nation will be safe for the Avatar. But at the moment no one but us can be trusted with his safety and training.”
“It is a pity. Particularly after the marriage of Prince Zhen to former Nun Tsering. To grow up, even for a year amongst such diversity would be invaluable for an Avatar to see. Crown Prince Zhihao and Crown Princess Pipaluk's youngest Prince Kuzon is only a year older than the Avatar if I remember correctly.” Nun Dechen said her piece.
“Indeed. But with the political situation as precarious as it is, and a potential civil war brewing is the winds are to be believed it would be an unwise decision. I would however put forth that the situation at hand might call for the Avatar being informed of his duties and position at an earlier date than usual. I would propose the age of twelve.”
That caused an uproar. Jamyang zoned out. Eventually a vote was held and it was decided. The Avatar would be moved to the Southern Air Temple with his bison immediately and told of his duties and position upon his twelve birthday or upon mastering Airbending, whichever came first.
“Mother Superior?” Brugmo said.
“Yes young one.”
“If I might ask, what is the name of the Avatar?”
“Aang. His name is Aang.”

Chapter Text
91 AG, off the coast of Jang Hui, Fire Nation Waters
Petty Officer Hiroko sighed, the past few moonturns had been utterly exhausting, not only physically, but also mentally. With the Water Tribe pair here there had been some very frank conversations. As a Southerner Hiroko was one of the few crewmen aboard the Kai who spoke Southern Water, hence the little waterbender had been particularly drawn to her when she was drawn away from the side of her grandmother or the Prince. Things which Hiroko had always held to be true, had been quickly countered by not only the Water Tribe Elder, who certainly had very good reason to lie, but also the young waterbender Katara who was much too young to have any reason to say anything but what she knew to be true. It had been difficult to say the least. Ever since she had concluded that the water tribe was not, in fact, full of dirty savages who ate their own young she'd tried to be warmer to the little girl. Not only to appease the Prince but also for the little girl.
She still remembered when Katara had been handed off to her by the Prince. Still rembered how she'd placed her down almost immediately and leaned away as the little girl curled into her leg. Still remembered the look on the Prince's face as he came up over the side of the ship with Elder Kanna . Hiroko wasn't certain she'd ever recover from that look. That the guilt would ever truly leave.
Hiroko shook her head, she was getting distracted. This was unacceptable in her current situation. While initially they had intended to press on forward and stock up in the colonies once the Prince had caught sight of Jang Hui's waters he had changed his mind, directing the ship to dock at the base of the factory which had opened there the year prior. As they'd sailed past the village Hiroko was certain that she hadn't been the only one to take note of the murky waters, the lack of fish on the stalls lining the floating town. If such damage could be done in only a year who knew what could occur if the factory's work was left to continue. This was how Hiroko had found herself in her current situation, as a part of the guard of Prince Lu Ten . She stood to attention as the bridge was lowered.
The Prince led the way as they marched down to be met by....no one. The general in charge of the factory hadn't deigned to greet an imperial cruiser. Despite their obvious standard indicating them to be the personal warship of the future Fire Lord. Hiroko could see the smoke coming from the Prince's nose. She winced. She would not like to be in that general's shoes that was for certain.
A thud came from the side. A flimsy fishing vessel had docked alongside them. A few fishermen and women exited before promptly kowtowing to the Prince.
“At least someone saw fit to welcome me. Rise. Your names?”
“My Prince I be Xu. This is my son Tsui and my wife Guan” the oldest man said. His son appeared to be around 16, only a few years younger than the Prince. The next eldest spoke next, followed in turn by the other woman in the group. The woman turned to Xu.
“My Prince, it is my greatest honour to welcome you to Jang Hui and if I may I want to ask fur yur help.” Xu slowly broke down into a distinct North-Eastern Lower Fire accent as he finished his sentence shaking.
“About the waters I presume?”
Xu started. “Yes my Prince” he stubbled over his words“'ver since the fact'ry open, the waters go murky, like the rainy season muds but worse. The fish come no more. Our children. They be hungry. We is devoted to the good cause my Prince. But if the fish go, we no live more.”
Hiroko had to focus to make sense of the man's words, she herself hailed from the South of the Fire Nation, from a poor family yes, but it was still difficult to make sense of North-Eastern Lower Fire. Her eyes glanced towards the Prince, his lips were tight and she could tell he was holding his fire at bay. She glanced out towards the bay itself. That was understandable.
“I understand. While the factory has already been built and thus cannot be torn down without the word of my imperial grandfather, I shall see what I can do to change the path of the waste, which must be polluting your waters terribly to have damaged so much in so little time.”
At this Xu looked on confused. They had met an impasse it appeared. He likely did not know enough High Fire to follow the Prince's words, likely recognising only key words such as rise, name and water. To his credit the Prince realised this and called over Seaman Jiang, who hailed from the North-East.
“Translate to them.” Jiang saluted before doing so.
Hiroko could easily mark the point at which the fisherpeople realised that the Prince was going to try to help them as they fell to their knees crying and bowing. The Prince hummed.
“You boy!” He turned to Xu's son.
“Go to the factory and fetch the General. Tell him Prince Lu Ten has summoned him to the Kai.”
Jiang translated for the boy and he rushed off running.
“You will come with me, to speak on behalf of your village.” at that the Prince turned on his heel and raged off back onto the ship. As he passed her Hiroko noted with amusement that he was muttering under his breath that he didn't go to people, they came to him.

Short and sweet. Been busy soz xx. Still very much appreciate comments and kudos x

Chapter 9: Fire Nation History Lessons, as 'enjoyed' by Zuko and Azula

Chapter Text
91 AG-Royal Palace, Caldera, Fire Nation
Zuko was bored. Extremely, totally and completely bored. With Lu Ten away on his search for the Avatar he was stuck with Azula. Though thankfully this would be their last lesson together before she was allowed to attend the Fire Nation Royal Academy for Girls. Though that was irritating too. Of course, Azula got to go and spend time with other kids while Zuko was stuck in this stupid palace. Speaking of this stupid palace. Their history tutor Ha-Jun of Keohso was such a drag. Unfortunately, Zuko couldn't say so as the old man was the eldest son of Grandfather's younger brother Prince Rozuku. Though the two didn't get along very well, with Fire Lord Sozin having Rozuku be raised by some other family, Zuko didn't want to find out how Grandfather would react to his nephew being insulted. It really wasn't worth the risk. They were going over recent family history and the murders of Fire Lord Sozin and Fire Lady Aruna's progeny. While it was probably meant to be a lesson for Azula, that no one could be trusted, Zuko wasn't sure from the smile on his sister's face that she was taking the lesson to heart.
So far, they had covered the traitorous air bender Tsering. Who had kidnapped her husband and murdered her parents in law the then Crown Prince and Princess, as well as their youngest sons Kenzo and Kuzon in the Fire Nation's year of betrayal and righteous conquest. Thankfully that evil woman had been found 4 years later, though it had been too late for Prince Zhen. Now they had to cover the Crown Prince's other children.
“Now that we have addressed this, can either of you tell me what happened to Crown Prince Zhihao's other children?”
Azula of course raised her hand instantly. Despite being only six, she still knew absolutely everything it seemed. It was infuriating to Zuko.
“Yes, Princess Azula?”
“Of course, Cousin Ha-Jun. Princess Hokulani of the blue fire, eldest daughter of Crown Prince Zhihao, was kidnapped and murdered by the savages of the Southern Water Tribe before the rescue offensive could reach her. Fortunately, she, the great warrior Princess as she was, managed to slaughter half of the tribe's water benders before she passed. We continue her great work to this day.”
“Very good Princess Azula. I am certain that someday you shall be even greater than Princess Hokulani herself.”
Azula preened and Zuko sunk into his chair. Stupid Princess Hokulani was Azula's favourite relative after only Father and Fire Lord Sozin. Zuko didn't see why. She couldn't have been that impressive if she managed to get kidnapped. Zuko was only 8 and he'd already fended off kidnappers twice.
“And you Prince Zuko? What happened to Princess Yazhu, Princess Azula, daughter of Crown Prince Zhihao, and Prince Kazuki?”
Oh no. Zuko panicked. The Crown Prince and his wife were the airbenders, Hokulani was the water tribes.
“Was it something to do with the Earth Kingdom?”
Ha-Jun sighed and began to speak before Azula interrupted him.
“Of course, it was dum dum. Don't you remember? Princess Yazhu was a non-bender so no fire nation nobles wanted her. Fire Lord Sozin was generous enough to give her hand in marriage to the Crown Prince of the Earth Kingdom, but the traitorous mud covered lunatics betrayed us and murdered her bridal party which included both her and her sister Princess Azula, grandfather's namesake, and their younger brother Prince Kazuki. This betrayal shows us how little the Earth Kingdom can be trusted and how much we need to save them. Honestly Zuzu. It's not hard.”
“SHUT UP AZULA!”
“Prince Zuko! Do not address your younger sister in such a manner!”
Zuko grit his teeth in frustration. “Yes, Cousin Ha-Jun.”
“That was a very good analysis Princess Azula. You are quite correct, though it is always wise to assess one's options. When your uncle the Crown Prince met the Earth King's father during his search for the Avatar he sat in discussion for months and almost gained half the Earth Kingdom in exchange for Princess Nuan's hand in marriage.”
“That's stupid. Aunt Nuan is dead. Besides the Earth Kingdom would have betrayed us again anyway. Why would doddery old Uncle think that was a good idea?”
At this cousin Ha-Jun spluttered and grew red.
“I would inform you Princess Azula, that my honoured father Prince Rozuku was well aware of his nephew’s plan's and indeed encouraged them. He saw it as wise and thus I do too.”
“Well, it's obvious what your daddy dearest was trying to do then isn't it.”
Azula smirked and Zuko cringed. That smirk was never a good sign.
“Your daddy was trying to get Uncle disinherited by Grandfather. I bet he sabotaged Aunt Nuan and Fire Lady Atula's children and pregnancies too. Do you have the same ambitions as him cousin dearest~~? Do you also have your sights set on the Dragon Throne? Because that's not very nice~~ Perhaps I should call my daddy and let him know~~”
“AZULA!” Zuko screamed.
“Princess Azula” Cousin Ha-Jun was shaking a little despite his age “I would assure you that I have no such inclinations. My father and your uncle were always close, I was one of the first to hold him when I was around your age actually Prince Zuko. The allegations you make are not only disrespectful of your honoured Aunt and Step-Grandmother's memory, but of my father and your uncle as well. I may be only seventh in the line of succession but you'd do well to remember that you are only fifth. Would you truly target your brother's potential children to decrease that number? Because that is what you are accusing my honoured Father of doing.”
Azula only smirked.
“Little Zuzu here would have to find a woman to marry stupid weak him first. And we both know that's not going to happen. So really, it’s a non-issue. We should be higher anyway. Everyone knows Iroh and Lu Ten are just bastards like Zhao who shouldn't be anywhere near the Dragon Throne.”
“PRINCESS AZULA! You will go to your room for saying such treasonous things! And I shall be discussing this with your parents and grandfather mark my words.”
Azula hung her head as if ashamed. But Zuko saw her smirk as she left. Saw the skip in her step as she walked out of the door.
“Cousin Ha Jun?”
His tutor composed himself.
“Yes, Prince Zuko?”
“What did Azula mean by that? What she said about Uncle and Lu Ten I mean.”
Despite them spending the past hour studying the murders of their family members it was only this that made Ha Jun uncomfortable.
“I'm afraid such discussions will have to wait until you are older my Prince. Perhaps you can discuss it with your parents.”
Zuko frowned.
“Fine”
Cousin Ha Jun breathed in deeply and adjusted his robes.
“Very well then. Let us discuss the life and death of Princess Azula, only daughter of Fire Lord Sozin. Her relationship with Prince Zhihao, her rivals and why her descendants have always had a lesser claim to the Dragon throne.”
Zuko groaned. This really was the most boring day.
Notes:
I LIVE!
Uni work finally done, so writing can begin again.
We finally get Zuko and Azula in this chapter, and exhibition. so much. But what is true and what is not? Because, I can tell you for certain that not all of Ha Jun's history lesson is correct~~~hehehe. I know more than you~~~
Enjoy!

Chapter Text
91 AG, Jang Hui, Fire Nation
General Mung was a busy man. Despite unfortunately being relegated to the home front General Mung had found himself in the admirable position of being in charge of the largest and most prolific factory constructed under the light of Fire Lord Azulon, Agni's chosen. General Mung of House Kaur had risen quickly through the ranks of the Fire Nation Army, helped along not only by the fortune of his good birth, being the heir to a formerly royal house, but also due to his intelligence, pragmatism and brutality. It was for these reasons that when Mung was given word of the imperial cruiser bearing the so-called 'Prince' Lu Ten 's personal standard that he elected to ignore it. For General Mung was a busy man and hailed from a long line of legitimate nobility. Nobility which had once been rulers in their own right.
It is unsurprising then, that when the filthy peasant from the backwater town near to the factory was brought to his presence bearing summons from the half-breed, the most respectable General Mung was beyond irritated. Unfortunately, the Fire Lord supported his legitimised heir Crown Prince Iroh . And Iroh adored his only son, despite the fact that it was not his wife whom bore the half-breed. Ignoring a ship which would, in all likelihood, pass through, and ignoring an official summons (through the mouth of a fisherman) were two very different things. And General Mung really was rather fond of his position.
This was how he found himself in his current position, flanked by his best guardspeople and stood in front of one of the largest Fire Nation ships currently in operation. Prince Lu Ten 's personal imperial cruiser the Kai. A crew member met them and escorted them to the Prince's meeting room. He was sat there, nonchalantly, with his fire nation appearance masking his dirty blood. General Mung was disgusted.
“Your Imperial Highness” He bowed deeply, careful to hide his disdain. It was unfortunate that this half-breed came before Prince Ozai , Azulon's only truly legitimate son.
“My sincere apologies for not attending you sooner. I had not been informed that you had planed to stop in our most humble factory.”
“Apology accepted General. I trust it shall not happen again.”
General Mung schooled his expression
“But of course not my Prince.”
The half breed nodded
“It has been brought to my attention that due care has not been afforded to the path of the waste produced by this plant. A fact that has unfortunately meant that the people of this area have suffered owing to the pollution caused by it. While I am certain that such an oversight must have occurred at a baser level than yourself, for your intellect is widely known General. As the future Firelord of this great nation, ensuring the safety of those who have done their duty or soon shall is one of my greatest priorities. As such, I find that we must now come up with a solution to this issue.”
It was only with great effort that General Mung withheld his sneer at these words.
“My Prince. While your care for your people is certainly admirable and ensuring the safety of our veterans and future soldiers is more so. I must find the need to 'deal' with the waste differently to be naive. This factory is the largest within this great nation, and cost much to construct. Perhaps your education did not cover such base lessons as economics, but I must now inform you that it would be outrageously expensive to redirect the waste at this point, and for one measly village!”
“I assure you, General, that my education has covered key topics such as economics extensively. Of course I understand that the cost of redesigning the factory at such a stage, for the sake of such a small village, would be extreme and as such I would never suggest such a thing.”
At this the peasant standing next to the soldier behind the Prince gasped and looked close to tears.
“However, surely the army has enough spare to help to relocate this village upriver to a less polluted location?”
General Mung snorted. The half breed might lay claim to a decent education in economics but he certainly didn't have much of one in the sciences.
“We surely could, my Prince. However to do so would be pointless as the factory's waste affects the river far upstream.”
“I see. Then I must wonder, how is it that your factory passes its mandatory health and safety inspections? For do you not source both your cleaning and drinking water from this river? As such surely the factory cannot be sanitary, and your soldiers cannot be safe?”
General Mung paled and stumbled over his words.
“As such, dealing with this issue properly must surely then be less costly than a potential sickness striking and immobilising the factory?”
“I suppose so.”
“Well then” the half breed opened up plans of the factory. Where he'd gotten them General Mung had no idea. “let's come up with a solution.”
The peasant stood behind him fell to his knees in relief. It was at that moment that a little water peasant ran through the doors chased by a soldier and jumped the half breed. While General Mung initially hoped that the water savages had sent a mini assassin unfortunately it was not to be as the half breed only looked at the girl exasperatedly and sat her on his lap as they continued.
General Mung held back a smirk. The half breed might have won this round but he couldn't hold his head too high. After all, Mung now knew that he either had an illegal appetite or had sired a bastard of his own, far younger than his father had.
Now which would be more damaging?
Notes:
Hi. Went on holiday soz.
General Mung is really really icky, as evidenced by the fact that he's now deciding whether to say Lulu's a pedo or has sired a bastard on a water tribe woman as a young teenager. Boooo.
*this shouldn't need a disclaimer but Lu Ten is absolutely NOT into Katara like ....that. That's disgusting and wrong but I'm just preempting the comments.
General Mung is just a disgusting piece of work.

Chapter Text
WARNING: Discussions of assassinations and infertility issues, including miscarriages and child death. Proceed with caution please.
The Kai, 91AG
Seven years. Lu Ten had been the chosen heir of Crown Prince Iroh for seven years. And yet he still had to exert his authority to get respect and obedience.
Every. Single. Time.
They might have finally found success in initiating the installation of a landfill in a neighbouring uninhabited volcanic island, but throughout the negotiations Lu Ten had been able to tell that General Mung didn't respect him. Didn't consider his authority legitimate. Perhaps the man hadn't realised that Lu Ten could tell. But he could. Determining which prominent individuals considered his claim illegitimate was essential after all.
In the seven years since Fire Lord Azulon's proclamation Lu Ten had almost been assassinated thrice as many times. The first wave had been taken out by his guards and had mainly consisted of individual attackers. That had changed in when he was 15. He had been taking tea with his stepmother. As had become common since Zuko had been born. They had been set upon by people dressed all in black. And Lu Ten had froze.
Lu Ten had froze. Crown Princess Nuan had not.
Officially the Earth Kingdom Princess was a non-bender. But that day she had bended as if she had been trained by Kyoshi herself.
Within less than 10 minutes Lu Ten was left the only person alive in a room of 25.
Because Lu Ten was a coward his stepmother was dead.
His own mother had died birthing him, leaving Lu Ten to be raised by servants, and his father whenever the Crown Prince was not at war. His relationship with the Crown Princess had been cold and distant for the first 12 years of his life, with her constantly trying to produce an heir of her own, to no success. That had only stopped with her death, but in those final three years they had been closer. So close that sometimes Lu Ten had slipped up and referred to her as mother. Lu Ten had long since grown out of that habit.
He remembered the day that his world had changed as if it were yesterday. Aunt Ursa had just entered labour with Zuko and Lu Ten was playing in the halls...

Fire National Palace, Caldera, 83 AG
The flames flickered as Lu Ten ran the halls, his hair loose. Maids rushed to avoid him carrying all sorts of bundles, from laundry to tea sets. Looking at the floor to step on the floorboards only and avoid the cracks, Lu Ten didn't notice the Crown Princess's approach until her red slippers were in front of him. They were vibrant and intricately decorated with golden dragons, indicating her status.
Not-at-all-nervous Lu Ten fell into a full bow, head almost touching the floor.
“Your Imperial Highness”
“Prince Lu Ten. Rise so I might see you.”
Lu Ten definitely didn't gulp at that. He rose slowly to a kneeling position. Then, seeing the Crown Princess raise an eyebrow in question, he rose to standing.
Crown Princess Nuan's vibrant green eyes looked down at him. Her face was long and narrow, with a sharp chin. The shadows under her eyes and any wrinkles displaying her age (37) were hidden by makeup. As was usual for her, the Crown Princess had her hair up and intricately decorated with dancing golden dragons and a flame headpiece. Aunt Ursa only wore a simple flame in a singlar topknot. But Aunt Ursa was only a Princess Consort, not the Crown Princess Consort.
Looking at her belly Lu Ten could tell the Crown Princess was pregnant again, as she usually was. He hadn't been told. But after all of the miscarriages, stillbirths and shortly living siblings this wasn't surprising.
Lu Ten didn't know how the Crown Princess did it. It hurt him enough, with Atula's death 4 years ago being particularly traumatic. But for her and Father....loosing so many children constantly be beyond difficult. And having to keep on trying.
After Atula had turned two the Crown Princess had stopped being pregnant all the time. Then when she was 4 Atula had gotten a fever. And Atula had burned. He had been 8.
Sometimes father and the Crown Princess's wails still haunted his dreams. Only a few days earlier he had been playing with her and father. Atula had just had her first spark. Grandfather had proclaimed her the future Fire Lady. The Crown Princess had been sitting in the palace, with the walls taken back so she could see everyone as she painted. They had been so very happy. Then Atula died and within the year the Crown Princess was pregnant again. Within the next 4, 3 siblings had come and left.
“How are your studies coming Prince Lu Ten?”
Lu Ten started from his memories.
“Well, thank you your Imperial Highness. I have just begun large scale battle tactics. My tutors say I am progressing well.”
“That is good. In time you will serve your father well.”
“Thank you, your Imperial Highness.”
From a distance Aunt Ursa's scream of pain broke through the silence.
“I think perhaps I might take some tea. My ladies are sat with Princess Ursa at the moment. Perhaps you might join me?”
Though it was close, Lu Ten didn't fall into a complete mess.
“I'd like that. Thank you, your Imperial Highness.”
Crown Princess Nuan clucked. “Follow me then.”
As the Crown Princess commanded, Lu Ten fell in line.
They meandered through the halls, maids falling into full bows as they passed. Until finally they reached one of the few areas of the palace Lu Ten had never been inside. The personal quarters of the Crown Princess of the Fire Nation. Crown Princess Nuan glided effortlessly into her quarters. Lu Ten froze on the edge of them.
He saw as the Crown Princess sat down in front of an intricately decorated wooden table. She gestured for him to join her. Shaking, his foot crossed the line.
Crown Princess Nuan's quarters were unlike any other part of the palace. Decorated in green, gold, and earthy colours they were certainly befitting a daughter of an Earth King.
He sat slowly opposite her. The tea pot arrived, with an intricate array of leaves in beautifully decorated pots. Unlike when he took tea with Father or Aunt Ursa, the tea was not yet brewed.
“I am going to brew us some tea. If you could, please bring the water slowly to the boil. It is a good exercise in control, your father finds.”
“I...yes...yes of course, your Imperial Highness.”
The Crown Princess huffed in amusement. Lu Ten did not see the contemplative look on her face as he slowly brought the water to boil.
“Here you are, your Imperial Highness. I hope that my humble efforts are satisfactory.”
“It's perfect Prince Lu Ten.”
She reached towards the bowls.
“With your Aunt going through what she is, I imagine today has been quite stressful. I shall brew a calming tea.”
“I thought all tea was calming?” Lu Ten asked without thinking. Immediately nerves broke through. “I apologise for my question your Imperial Highness. If you do not feel like answering it is no issue.”
She chuckled. “It is no issue Prince Lu Ten. Tea can be calming or energising. Different blends can possess entirely different properties, as well as tastes. The one which I brew for you now calms the mind and the body both. As such it's a favourite of many.”
“I understand. Thank you, your Imperial Highness.”
The Crown Princess stared at the brewing pot for a while.
“You should call me stepmother. Someday you may be Fire Lord after all. And then where would we be?”
Lu Ten's brain skid to a halt. He stuttered and stumbled over his words for minutes before coming up with a coherent response.
“That's not at all necessary! Soon you will have an heir of your own, and they will be Fathers heir. And then someday Fire Lord or Lady. So, it really isn't something I will be.”
Crown Princess Nuan sighed. “You are old enough now to realise how unlikely it is that I will produce a healthy child. I am 37. I have been wed since I was 17. In those twenty years I have only borne two children who lived passed infancy, despite falling pregnant 19 times. That this one would live, is highly unlikely.”
Lu Ten looked down in silence.
She sighed again.
“Prince Lu Ten. As things stand, the Fire Lord does not wish for you to be your father's heir. He considers you weak. Ill-blooded. Frivolous. And to the best of his knowledge, you only have the support of your father. If this continues. If the worst happens, and your father passes to Agni before the Fire Lord. Prince Ozai will be named Crown Prince.”
Lu Ten shivered.
“I see from your reaction you understand how dire of a situation that would be. Prince Ozai is a powerful and intelligent man. But he cares for nothing but power and himself. The war will be over within the reign of the next generation. Prince Ozai will not know how to conduct himself in such a situation and the world will burn.”
Lu Ten found himself nodding along.
“As such, after this pregnancy has come to a close, one way or another. If I have no living babe. I will beseech the Fire Lord to name you Iroh's heir. I expect you to work hard to deserve this honour.”
Lu Ten was silent for a couple of moments.
“Thank you, your Imperial Highness. I will work as hard as I can to deserve this honour.”
The Crown Princess smiled and raised an eyebrow.
“I apologise...stepmother.”
Crown Princess Nuan smiled at him.
“Very good. Now then...it appears the tea is brewed. Let me pour it and you can tell me more about your studies.”

Lu Ten stared down at the golden and green teapot and cups in front of him. His tea was brewed. And still no one outside his family believed in him.
Notes:
Hiiiii. What's up. Merry Christmas! Apologies for vanishing. I've been busy with job hunting and then with getting into the swing of a new job.
Hopefully this was enjoyable if depressing to read. Also, yes this is who Iroh got his love of tea from.
Hopefully everyone finds the late Crown Princess Nuan enjoyable (poor darling).
As always, comments and kudos are appreciated xx

Chapter Text
The Kai, Near to Yu Dao, Summer 91 AG
When the Dragon Hawk was first spotted coming towards the Kai Lu Ten had not been concerned. While mail usually arrived on a set day, it was not overly unusual for a messenger hawk to arrive a day or two out of the usual times, particularly if they were carrying declarations. Of course, this changed when one of his officers ran to him on the bridge, where Katara was busy pestering the captain for information. While initially the Captain had had no interest in the water tribe girl, as soon as he realised that her interest was genuine the man couldn't help himself. In Lu Ten 's humble opinion, it was adorable.
Anyway, as he was saying. Lu Ten 's relaxed attitude to the hawks arrival changed once the message was presented to him by a man bowing deeply. If he'd been concerned by this, his worry was only increased by the ribbon and seal on the message. For it bore Lu Ten 's grandfather's seal. Now there were many things this could be. Chief among them, there was the potential that someone had reported the water tribe situation to the palace. And that the Fire Lord was not happy with him. Fortunately, none but Lu Ten and likely Elder Kanna had seen little Katara bending, so there would be no demands for her transport to the capital, however, there could well be demands for Lu Ten to drop them off to fend for themselves. And, Agni aid him, Lu Ten had become fond of the little turtleduck.
As such when the message read only that Lu Ten was ordered to attend the Fire Lily Festival in the nearest major Fire Nation settlement, he nearly breathed a physical sigh of relief.
“Captain!” He called, drawing the man from his conversation with Katara , who now focused her attention on him as well.
“Where is the nearest major settlement in this area? It appears we are to attend the Fire Lily Festival.” As soon as he said those last three words Lu Ten was made to regret it. A high pitched squeal rang through the bridge.
“A FESTIVAL! WE'RE GOING TO A FESTIVAL!!” Katara squealed jumping up and down in delight.
“Now now there turtleduck. We'll have to ask your grandmother first. I can't just gallivant off with you!” Lu Ten thought that was a very good response.
And then the eyes came out.
Katara stared up at him with her big blue eyes watering.
“But Lulu...” she sniffled “I want to go to a festival with you.”
THE EYES.
Lu Ten spluttered for a moment, though he would deny it to the end of his days.
“There there turtleduck. I'm sure all will be well. We just have to confirm with Elder Kanna , but I'm sure she'll say yes.”
And just like that the little tearbender was as happy as could be. That manipulative little thing....she and Azula would certainly get on well.
“Where to then?”
“The closest major settlement is Yu Dao my prince. However, it is known for its mixed culture so perhaps it might not....” The captain trailed off. Lu Ten narrowed his eyes at him. They would go to Yu Dao and he would be as fire nation as could be. This he swore.
“The Fire Lily only blooms for a few weeks. We'd best set off for Yu Dao now.”
The captain acquiesced and Katara squealed.
To Yu Dao it was

Just a small chapter today. It sets up a much larger one I aim to release tomorrow. Happy New Year all! May it be filled with blessings and happiness.
Chapter 13: Ripples Official Fire Nation Family Tree: 90 AG
Notes:
Before the chapter later today I thought it might be useful to publish an 'official' family tree.
Please note that this pertains to this fanfic and is meant to be the Family Tree of the Official Fire Nation Curriculum. AKA: Don't trust it completely lol
I use BC as Before Conquest and AC as in After Conquest as I somehow doubt the Fire Nation would use the genocide as a term of time measurement. Its also easier than individual rule eras for such a small piece.
If a name is in bold it means they are currently alive
Children of Fire Lords are given the title 'Prince/ss ... of Agni's Light'
Children of the House are given the title 'Prince/ss ... of the Fire Nation'
If a royal marries into another House no special titles are awarded to their children, unless those children marry back into the Imperial House.
Living Members of the Imperial Family (Fire Lord+Princes and Princesses) don't have dates attached to them because of superstition and the belief that they 'shine eternally with Agni's light'
Numbers in brackets and underlined represent the order in which succession is passed
(1) Crown Prince Iroh's Line
(2) Prince Ozai's Line
(3) Prince Rozuku's Line
(4) Princess Azula, Daughter of Sozin's Line

Chapter 14: Yu Dao Part Two
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Yu Dao, Summer 91 AG
The Kai had docked at the nearest port to Yu Dao late the previous night. Lu Ten had seen them into port before sending off some petty officers on komodo rhinos to Yu Dao. While the city had been informed of their intended arrival via messenger hawk as soon as they set a course, it was always a good idea to ensure adequate preparations had been arranged. This was particularly important for Lu Ten's attendance at the Fire Lily Festival, as he would be acting in an official capacity as a Light of Agni. Besides, Katara needed some clothes if she were to be attending with him.
On that note Lu Ten felt rather guilty. While he certainly couldn't be blamed for giving into those adorable blue eyes, he shouldn't have said that Elder Kanna would 'certainly' say yes. Katara had brought up his words when she was asking her grandmother whether or not she could attend the Fire Lily Festival with him. Even Lu Ten could sense the woman's hesitation as she agreed to let Katara go with him. Unfortunately backing out at this point, while it would help ease his conscience regarding accidentally having aided in pressuring Elder Kanna into allowing Katara to go, would only result in an absolutely intolerable waterbending child. Never a wanted occurrence. Lu Ten shivered, remembering little Azula's tantrums. No one wanted that.
In the distance, leaving the mountain range Lu Ten could just about make out the komodo rhinos returning. That was very fortunate. The sun was slowly but surely rising, and in all likelihood, it would take them some time to make their way through the mountain pass to Yu Dao itself.
Lu Ten turned to the captain. “It appears we shall be leaving soon captain. I assume any supply lists have been drawn up already?”
“Of course, my prince.”
“Very good. I trust that I shall be leaving our guest in safe hands with you? The little Lady Katara will be travelling with us. Specifically with Petty Officer Hiroko on the back of her komodo rhino. As such, only Elder Kanna shall remain on this vessel.”
“Understood your Imperial Highness. Rest assured that Elder Kanna shall be well cared for.”
Lu Ten nodded. “Good, good. Now, I shall return to my quarters. Let me know when we are ready to leave.”
Lu Ten's quarters were easily accessible from the bridge, which was in turn the area of the ship with some of the highest security. Being on his 'quest' Lu Ten did not have access to the army of servants his grandfather, uncle and aunt enjoyed back at home. However, at least ten of the crew were fully trained manservants. Lu Ten could largely dress himself of course, but they did come in handy on days like these.
As was often the case, it took a significant period of time for them to dress him in his full ceremonial dress. The robes themselves made up the most part of the time, as thankfully his hair had always been rather easy to tame and only required a top knot. Lu Ten looked at himself in the mirror. He was the picture of a Fire Nation Prince. He didn't feel it.
As Lu Ten definitely-did-not-wallow a little whirlpool stormed into his room twirling. Looking around at her Lu Ten had to say that the soldiers had outdone themselves. The robes themselves were traditional fire nation red, but in lieu of the traditional patterns and emblems regularly used by fire nation weavers, were waves sewn in golden thread. Truly, Lu Ten had no idea where they managed to find these robes. They were befitting of a Princess. Lu Ten gasped and walked hurriedly towards his treasured box. The box contained items to remind him of his stepmother and came everywhere with him. Both because he missed her dearly....and partially due to the fact that being dutiful to his late stepmother made him look good.
In contrast to her stunning robes, Katara's hair was in a basic top knot. It could not stand. Ever so carefully Lu Ten brought out a hairpin from the box. This one was relatively simple, though still recognisable as a Princess's. It was gold, with pearls inlaid. It was perfect.
“Turn around” Lu Ten ordered before placing the hairpin in her topknot.
“Perfect” he smiled and Katara beamed with joy.
“It is so pretty isn’t it, Lulu!”
“Indeed, you are, turtleduck. Just like a Princess.”
He took her hand, and they made their way out, as an officer called to inform them that the palanquin had arrived.
It was only when the palanquin bearers sent by Yu Dao bowed to both him and Katara that Lu Ten realised that his soldiers might just have picked something too good. It would appear mad to place her in front of Petty Officer Hiroko now. Particularly when the bearers had already bowed. And Lu Ten absolutely could not afford to make mistakes. As such, the initial plan for travel was aborted as he led Katara up to the palanquin to sit with him. Both he and the bearers were terribly lucky the girl was so small. Fortunately, the palanquin was incredibly large and ornate. Unfortunately, that, plus Katara's extra weight certainly meant that it would be a long journey.
Though as Lu Ten looked at his 'noble born ward's' excited face peering through the curtains he could not come to regret it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been almost two hours into the journey and Lu Ten regretted it.
He further regretted the fact that it was 'unseemly' for a member of royalty to arrive in a town in a carriage and not a palanquin.
Though, Lu Ten told himself, if it had been uncomfortable for him, it must have been unbearable for the poor men carrying them.
The journey was of course accompanied by relentless, “Are we there yet?...Are we there yet?....How long now?” from Katara.
As such, when they finally passed through the great wall blocking off Yu Dao from the world, Lu Ten was quite certain that everyone in the convoy breathed a sigh of relief.
Of course, the worst was yet to come. While Lu Ten had made Katara swear to not leave the palanquin once they reached the city, and fortunately she had stuck to that, this did not stop her from peering out of the curtains. Sometimes, to Lu Ten's fear, LEANING outside of the curtains. Lu Ten was decided. Children were stressful and he was certain that Zuko would make a fine heir.
Outside Yu Dao was all hustle and bustle, the red and green painted buildings all decorated for the Fire Lily festival. Lu Ten smiled slightly as he glanced out above Katara's head. Somehow, the girl had finally quieted seeing the sights and sounds and smells. The citizens of Yu Dao, evidently seeing Lu Ten and recognising that this was no ordinary palanquin carrying some noble or another, but a palanquin carrying the future Fire Lord roared their approval. Cheers came across and red flowers and confetti rained upon them. Lu Ten snorted. It appeared his guards were having to guard him from admirers instead of assassins for once. That was certainly a change. Lu Ten's earth kingdom blood might find him disdain in most parts of the Fire Nation. But in Yu Dao it brought him only adoration.
The journey to Agni's Temple was shorter and far more enjoyable than the rest of the journey. Before long they had made it to the temple. There on the steps stood an incredibly large welcoming party. This was a welcome change from that damn General. Evidently every noble family of Yu Dao had turned up to welcome him. As was the custom, at the font of the welcoming line were the mayor and his family. A girl Lu Ten presumed to be the mayor's daughter was holding onto a bouquet of Fire Lilies nervously. Next to them were the Fire Sages tasked with keeping this temple to Agni and its fires. As Yu Dao was one of the oldest of the Fire Nations colonies, and a pinnacle of the good work the Fire Nation was doing, the Sages tending it were rather senior.
As Lu Ten left the palanquin, Katara following shortly behind him they all bowed low. Both the welcoming committee and the now silent crowd behind them.
“Rise children of Agni.”
The welcoming committee rose slowly, and cheers rang out from behind him.
“Welcome, Prince Lu Ten, honoured Heir of Crown Prince Iroh, son of Agni. I am mayor Morishita. This is my wife, and our daughter Kori.”
The little girl, who appeared to be around Katara's age bowed and presented him with the flowers. Lu Ten thanked her and walked the line.
He did not get far before an elderly Fire Sage questioned him.
“It is an honour my Prince. I am gladdened that you took the time to join us today for this sacred celebration of life, and Agni's great blessing to us all.”
Lu Ten smiled and responded cordially. Before he could move along the sage spoke again.
“If I might inquire my Prince, who is this young child of Agni who walks with you today.”
Lu Ten's eye twitched and Katara smiled shyly.
“This is the young Lady Katara. Her mother was water tribe, and she is attending with me today.”
The Fire Sage hummed and bowed respectfully.
“I see my Prince. Very good.”
Lu Ten smiled sharply. As he moved on, he did not notice the Mayor murmuring to a close-by attendant.
After the line was greeted, as was tradition Lu Ten went to enter the temple and the crowd fell into full bows once more. On the journey here he had explained to Katara what was to occur, and bless her, she had wanted to join. As Lu Ten felt her hand grasp his robes, he was assured that this was still the case.
The two entered the temple alone and came out an hour later after praying in silence. Lu Ten was very impressed by the turtleduck's patience. He'd prayed silently with only a few children. Only once with Zuko. Never again, the boy had been so fidgety. And Azula no longer prayed in silence, expect on public occasions, which was unfortunate. As such Katara was very impressive.
Lu Ten may or may not have yawned as he stretched himself and got up. The journey out took longer as he stretched himself out. As they exited the temple Lu Ten and Katara walked along the path that had been made for them towards the dais where Lu Ten would sit. He hadn't expected there to be two cushions on that dais instead of one but there they were. Initially, he was uncertain what to do. But after only a moment of thought Lu Ten realised that there was not much that he could do. They had placed a lower cushion for Katara alongside Lu Ten's raised one.
They both sat.
If Lu Ten had been recalling anything in that moment, it should have been that the position next to a Fire Prince attending an event in an official capacity was limited to family members, illegitimate and legitimate both. Wards did not sit there. Considering that Lu Ten had attended such events with both his father and then later his stepmother, he really ought to remember this. Unfortunately for Prince Lu Ten did not recall this essential fact until late that night as he woke up in a cold sweat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They were seated once more and honestly Lu Ten was getting rather concerned that when he went to perform his firebending display he may very well end up falling flat on his face due to the evil ailment of pins and needles.
Beside him Katara was laughing and clapping along to the entertainment. She was wearing a crown of Fire Lilies that the children of the town had presented to her earlier and was obviously having an amazing time. It was adorable and had Lu Ten thinking that perhaps he might like children of his own after all. Zuko would be so disappointed. He chuckled.
Before they knew it, it was time for his display and speech. Fortunately, Lu Ten managed to not mess this up completely and the display itself went off without a hitch. Then of course came the hard part. When Lu Ten made speeches, he was used to seeing eyes of disgust and distaste in the audience. Despite how welcoming Yu Dao had been thus far. Even here he could not help but expect the same. He hesitated. This day had been wonderful, and he wasn't ready for the incoming disappointment and distaste. He breathed in deeply. Needs must.
“Children of Agni. I thank you most sincerely for the incredible welcome you have given me and the Lady Katara today. From the moment I set eyes on the palanquin you so graciously sent for us, to now, when you all listen so courteously.” He bowed his head slightly.
“For millennia the Fire Nation has celebrated the festival of Fire Lilies. The festival of life and of Agni's blessing. As the Fire Lily, our mortal lives are fleeting. The joy, faith, and welcoming nature of Yu Dao which I experienced today is not so. Yu Dao has been a city, a community, that we should all strive for over a hundred years.” He paused
“Under the flag of this nation, under the light of Agni and the rule of my honoured Grandfather, Firelord Azulon, Fire Made Flesh, Herald of Agni, Yu Dao has risen to the pinnacle of civilisation and prosperity. May we go even further, together, and not apart.” Cheers rang through the square.
He hesitated before speaking again. “My honoured late stepmother was born a daughter of Earth King He. I am certain that she would be joyed by the harmony I see today in Yu Dao, just as I am.”
If the cheers had been loud before, now they were deafening.
Behind Lu Ten, the Fire Sages frowned.
Notes:
This was a big one. As always comments and kudos are appreciated. Back to work today so fair warning of potential vanishing.
And yes, in his infinite wisdom Lu Ten just accidentally recognised Katara as a member of his family.
Does everyone in Yu Dao think she’s his bastard daughter? Yes. Yes they do.
Well done Lu Ten. Taking accidental baby acquisition to an entirely new level

Royal Palace, Caldera, 91 AG
Zuko , was, as usual, bored. When he'd first heard that Azula would be going to the Royal Fire Academy for Girls he'd been positively thrilled. Now though, having spent months on end suffering through cousin Ha-Jun's lessons alone. Being, alone at the palace. Much as Zuko hated to admit it he'd begun to miss the she-spirit.
Grandfather had insisted that Azula board with the rest of the girls, much to father's annoyance. Zuko almost wished that father had won that battle now.
Azula was beyond annoying. Infuriatingly clever and talented in every single thing she attempted. But she was also his sister. Also his only companion since Lu Ten left. And Zuko was lonely. Azula was set to come home for a visit soon, that was exciting. But she would be bringing with her her new 'friends'. One of the Ty sisters and some other girl whose name Zuko couldn't remember. Zuko already hated them. They might have disliked each other, but Zula was his. And she was being taken away.
Zuko threw the entire remainder of the bread he'd been feeding the turtleducks into the pond. Azula was leaving him just like Lu Ten . But unlike Lu Ten , she was coming back with replacements for his company. He hated it. He hated her. And he hated those stupid girls.
Grumbling, Zuko trudged off to the one person remaining in the palace whom he could talk to. Mother. She would surely understand for surely mother missed Azula as well.
Stalking through the palace Zuko didn't notice the servants sticking to the walls. Didn't notice the hushed whispers or the glances over. Didn't realise that something in the Imperial Family had just shifted drastically.
He did notice Father and Mother's conversation though. Zuko rarely saw them together during the day, at least outside of official engagements. So when he heard Father in Mother's rooms Zuko froze. He couldn't hear quite right. So Zuko lent in.
“..wonderful, dear wife?”
Mother made a gasping breath.
“Our dear nephew has truly doomed himself this time. I must admit. It certainly makes things easier doesn't it?”
Zuko heard mother crying.
“Come now, darling . This is good news. The half-breed won't have to die, and your sweet Zuko will be Fire Lord.”
Zuko heard nothing after that. He ran.
Zuko couldn't be Fire Lord. He'd probably be a General someday yes, like Prince Rozuku. Maybe an educator of Lu Ten 's children like cousin Ha-Jun. But Lu Ten was Uncle Iroh 's heir. Lu Ten would be Fire Lord.
....
....
....
....
....
....
Lu Ten 's mother was Earth Kingdom.
He'd looked it up after his and Azula 's final lesson together. Both Aunt Nuan and Lu Ten 's mother had been earth kingdom. Mixed nation children were half breeds. Father considered them ill suited for anything other than farming and earth fodder. He always said so.
....
....
....
Father considered Lu Ten ill suited for the Dragon Throne.
....
....
....
Father was going to get rid of Lu Ten .
....

What had Lu Ten done to doom himself first?

WARNING: Implied familicide and child murder. Child disappearance. Proceed with caution
Throne Room, Fire Nation Imperial Palace, Caldera, Year of Conquest (YC)
The flames of the Dragon Throne burned high as Sozin sat in the seat of power that had been his for over half a century now. Many who had been incapable of comprehending Sozin's righteous plan for the world had fled the Caldera already, including his traitorous grandchildren.
Hokulani had taken Kenzo, the waterbending half breed, down to the South Pole, claiming the boy needed training. They had left under the pretence of going North, to his waterbending daughter in law's homeland. But Sozin knew better. His dragon had followed them after all. And so, the lie had quickly unravelled. The two were inaccessible for now. But they could be taken care of as and when Sozin chose. Hokulani might have been a powerful firebender but she also had a disgraceful interest in women. And Kenzo, Kenzo was a waterbender. Neither were threats to his rule.
His son was not so wise. Zhihao openly opposed him in councils, kept his eldest Zhen and his airbender daughter in law close, and doted on their offspring which had barely any dragonsblood in her. It was enraging. At least he'd been rid of the non-bending disgrace that was his youngest grandson for a while now. Kuzon had vanished looking for dragons eggs nearly a month ago. Not Sozin's own work, but he was hardly complaining.
He smirked. The Comet would soon be arriving, the Fire Sages had told him. And thus his plans could finally be set in motion. The waterbending daughter in law of his was travelling with three of her offspring to the Earth Kingdom. They would not arrive intact. Sozin had ensured it. Tragic truly. That his poor grandchildren had been so horrifically massacred by Earth Kingdom savages. That his beloved daughter in law had barely managed to escape with her life and was bedridden with grief here in the palace. Truly it was a terrible day for the Dragon Throne and Sozin's family.
It would be difficult he was sure. But Roku was no longer here to stand in his way. The plans had taken more than a decade to realise. But finally, Sozin would no longer be largely impotent outside of the land of fire. Soon. Soon. The world would bask in his rule. Would be a part of the glory of the Fire Nation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quarters of Prince Zhen and Lady Tsering, YC
The palace was quiet when Tsering awoke to the cries of her daughter. It was never quiet. The hustle and bustle of the servants, the chirps and caws of the wildlife, the roars of the flames of training. There was always something. Not today. Instead she only felt the gnawing feeling of dread. The feeling of something creeping up behind her. The freezing knowledge that something would go horribly wrong today.
She rose quietly, her husband not yet woken by their daughter's shrieks. Zhen was always exhausted these days, unlike Zhen the younger who seemed to never want to sleep. Tsering didn't blame him. The terrifying figure of her grandfather in law loomed over them all. Her mother in law, and many of her siblings in law had managed to escape. Tsering hoped the same could be said for poor little Kuzon but she did not have much hope in that. They had to remain though. Herself, Zhen, Zhen the younger, and her father in law Zhihao. They were in the direct line of succession. They could not escape. It went against all of her instincts to remain here. As an airbender she endeavoured first and foremost to avoid conflict. Yet, here she remained as the walls were closing in on her. It rubbed her in all the wrong ways.
She came into the room.
Zhen was crying in her crib.
In the corner of her room the nursemaid was a pile of ashes.
She screamed and fled.
As she grabbed her daughter and ran out to the adjoining bedroom Tsering felt someone walking up behind her. There was no time to think. No time to recall her limited training, for Tsering had never been a talented bender. With a gust of wind she awoke her husband and dragged him from their bed. Still dressed in their nightgowns they fled. The wind propelled her, the flames him. As fast as they were, their pursuer was faster. The winds between them lessened as they fled. She had to go faster. Faster. Faster.
It was no use.
They were going to be caught.
A blast of fire shook her to her senses.
She turned.
Behind her she could see something everyone in the world had been predicting for decades.
Chasing them, calm as could be, was the Fire Lord.
And facing him down, dressed like them, only in his sleeping trousers, was the Crown Prince.
Zhihao was more dishevelled than Tsering had ever seen him.
But still he stood there, facing down the most powerful fire bender in the world.
Tsering had been so panicked that she had not noticed as her father in law flew past them.
“Run!” The order was snapped with a tone only a man born to be Fire Lord could pull off.
“Both of you! Run NOW!”
Tsering didn't need telling twice.
Zhen the elder did, hesitating as if he wished to remain with his father.
But Firebending had always been Hokulani's strong suit, not her husband's. And so, holding tight to her daughter Tsering grabbed the air around her husband and PULLED. He came flying towards her as they set off at pace. They had to run. They had to hide.
They would be found.
Gotta love the sheer accuracy of those Fire Nation textbooks
Fire Nation Imperial Palace, Caldera, YC
The wind swirled around the two men as they faced one another down. The spirits were disturbed by what was occurring.
Zhihao stood firm in his stance as he heard his son and his daughter in law fleeing behind him. Fire Lord Sozin stood calmly and strongly, not even deigning to respond with a stance of his own.
“Father”
“Zhihao”
“The strings tethering you to sanity have finally snapped, I see”
“The time has come boy. It is time for the rest of the world to be brought into the glory that is the Fire Nation. It is only a pity that you cannot see that what I am doing is good and right.”
“You are trying to murder your own descendants.”
“They are half breeds. Nothing but that. You however are pure. The fires of Agni flow through your veins as they flow through mine. I must apologise, if the late Avatar had not convinced me of its wisdom, I would never have allowed your marriage to that fish.”
“Pipaluk is no fish father.”
“Pipaluk is dead.”
Silence and buzzing rang through Zhihao's ears.
“As are the filthy half-breeds she bore you.”
“This can all be corrected Zhihao. I am your father after all. I have no wish to fight you. Simply turn around and slay those mongrels and I can find you a good and proper Fire Nation woman for you to take to wife. Perhaps Lady Ty Alangka. She is yet unwed and of good stock.”
“You wish for me to murder my children and wed my 18 year old niece.”
“YOUR CHILDREN ARE HALF-BREEDS ZHIHAO”
Fire came out of Fire Lord Sozin's mouth and nose in his rage. Zhihao did not flinch.
“My children are born of the light of Agni. Born with the blessings of Tui and La. You are the mongrel who has ordered the hunting of our dragon brethren. You are the one who has sullied himself.”
Zhihao breathed in deeply as his father snorted in rage.
Zhihao had been trained by the greatest firebending masters in the known world, human and dragon alike. He had been born to rule, trained by both his father and the former Avatar Roku in the ways of fire and of diplomacy. But he could never match up to his father. Hokulani, the most talented of his children was almost able to. But Zhihao. Zhihao knew. He knew, that once he said this there would be no turning back. He knew, only the avatar could face Fire Lord Sozin in any way. And the avatar was an undeclared child.
“I will only let you have my children once you've burned my bones to ashes.”
The silence rung out between them.
“Fire Lord Sozin.” He did not use his father's other titles, for he no longer deserved them. “I challenge you to an Agni Kai.”
“So be it.”
They both pushed off with flames to land in the courtyard. It would do for their purposes.
“Since only one of us will leave this alive I doubt we need the formalities.” Sozin said
“No, I imagine not.”
They circled one another. They both might have called this an Agni Kai. But in reality there was no religious significance. No formality in this. This was nothing but a fight to the death.
A fight to the death that would determine the fate of the world.
Chapter 18: Arrival at the Northern Water Tribe-Part One
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Northern Water Tribe, 91 AG
Yue had been feeling very excited for days now, and thus had been driving her poor nursemaids spare. She couldn't very well explain the feeling but the sheer joy and excitement and EVERYTHING was almost totally overwhelming to the seven year old. Thus when she saw every man of any import, alongside the two female elders, beginning to make their way in quite some hurry towards the palace, Yue grinned.
For certainly, today something quite exciting would occur. Out of the corner of her eye Yue saw her nursemaid Tapeesa coming towards her to usher her back to her chamber. As such, Yue did the only reasonable thing. She ran the other way. Droplets of water layered the floor as her spirit-mother led her the way she was meant to go. Yue couldn't contain her squeal of excitement.
She was able to hush herself as she hid behind a pillar in the great hall however, her hood pulled up to hide her easily identifiable hair. She gaped, literally every man in the entire tribe seemed to be in the hall, alongside the two female elders. It was amazing, only on sacred festivals had Yue ever seen the great hall so full!
Her father, Chief Arnook, of course sat at the head of the hall, atop the raised ice with the four elders who were his advisers; Yue could only recall the names of Yugoda and Pakku. Father looked pale and worried from what Yue could see. This worried her, for father was never worried, about anything other than Yue of course.
The men all appeared concerned as well, and as her father rose to greet them all, the hundreds fell silent.
Knowing that Yue would not be able to otherwise Tui made it so that all in the hall could hear Chief Arnook's words.
“Brothers! Elders. I come before you today bringing grave news. As many of you will have heard a fire nation battle ship has been sighted near Agna Qel'a” Hushed concerned whispers let up.
“We must attack! And we must do so now!”
A man cried from the gathered crowd.
“Are you a fucking idiot?! Kill one and they'll kill us all. You know what happened to the South after Princess Hokulani!”
“That was a Princess. This is just a ship.”
“Enough!” Father shouted, stopping the argument before it could escalate.
“The historians have been contacted and it appears that this ship flies the symbol of an Imperial Prince at its mast. There are few of these remaining, as such it can be assumed that any attack on it would result in a far worse retaliation from those ashmakers.”
The men paled and mumbled once more.
“Fortunately it also appears that the ship flies a flag of peace. The flag of four, which has always been used as one of peace. It appears odd, but it is recognisable.”
“With these facts considered, I intend to let them in.”
Silence rang throughout the hall before the uproar commenced.
Through it all Yue grinned. This would be fun .
Chapter 19: Arrival at the Northern Water Tribe-Part Two
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Northern Water Tribe, 91 AG
The Flag of Four flew above the Kai as they made their way ever closer to Agna Qel'a. It was a flag which had not been flown by a fire nation cruiser in decades, a flag of the avatar, a flag of peace. None could recall how or when the flag had first been created, but all knew its meaning. Even he, despite its lack of usage in so many years by the fire nation, knew of it.
While in years past all ships which sailed the waves of the world carried the flag in their hold, the ships of the fire nation had not been issued with them for many many years. As such, the one which now flew above them had been rather hastily created. The red of the fire nation had not been at all difficult to acquire, as many of them wore the colour as standard issue, the blue had come from their water tribe guests and the green from one of the Colonials on the ship. The orange however, now that had been almost impossible to acquire. Thankfully, as an imperial cruiser they were issued with air bender spoils of war to display in his cabin. Lu Ten had always found the orange colour out of place so they had never come out of storage so long as he had been on the ship. Thus, it had taken one of the lower seamen to remind him of their existence. Seawoman Choko had certainly been rewarded for her good memory. The non bender girl was quite odd with her wide grey eyes, Lu Ten recalled.
The great walls protecting Agna Qel'a now loomed before them, over thrice the height of The Kai.
Looking at them Lu Ten gulped.
Despite his lengthy journey outside of the Fire Nation, Lu Ten had never once had to greet a delegation of this level of nobility. In all likelihood, standing below them was the Chief of the Northern Water Tribe, his heir, and numerous water Tribe Elders. It was nerve wracking for even him.
Lu Ten was not stupid. Even he knew how much of a risk they were taking in landing here. They were one ship, a grand imperial cruiser yes, but a singular one nonetheless. The Northern Water Tribe was a neutral stronghold, with numerous benders. And the Fire Nation had exacted terrifying vengeance upon the South for the death of Princess Hokulani, perhaps a vengeance too great for the crime.
But there was no time left for second thoughts, as the ice wall parted before them.
“Agni help us” He murmured as the wall gave way to reveal a city of ice, with blue dots specking on the dock.”
He quickly removed himself from the helm and made his way to his cabin as the news of their impending arrival rang out throughout the ships ventilation airways.
He checked his hair and appearance, the robes used for their day at the festival still fitting well, and his headpiece sitting atop his head heavily and steadily. They were presenting a picture of peace after all, as much as an imperial war cruiser could anyway. Lu Ten couldn't very well march in there in full naval attire.
He breathed in deeply as he made his way down to the unloading deck.
He was a Prince of the Fire Nation. He was blessed by Agni. He was the son and heir of the Dragon of the West. He was the beloved son of the late Crown Princess Nuan of the Earth Kingdom. He was the future Fire Lord and Herald of Agni. He was Lu Ten . He could do this. Never mind the fact that he'd never been trained for international diplomacy. Sort of pointless to know that when there would be but one nation when Lu Ten ascended the throne. He could do this. He was fine. He absolutely was not panicking. Everything was great. Yes. Absolutely.
Lu Ten was so lost in his thoughts that he did not notice as Katara and Elder Kanna walked up behind him hand in hand.
Only as the hatch opened did he distract himself from his thoughts. He could do this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yue could barely hold herself back from jumping up and down as the really big ship entered Agna Qel'a. Never in her whole life, nor even in her father's life had a fire nation war ship docked in their waters peacefully. Of course, being 7, the sheer magnitude of this moment did not register to Princess Yue , who was more occupied by how big it was, and that her spirit sister was aboard it.
The great ship then opened up, as if it were a great metal whale opening its maw. Yue had never seen a ship do such a thing and was thus rightfully amazed. From the ship a pretty looking man stepped out. His hair was long and decorated like a woman's would be, but Yue could tell he was a boy. His skin was pale and his eyes looked like fire. Yue was amazed. Behind him stood an old water tribe elder and a young girl, who Yue immediately recognised, in her heart of hearts, as La's chosen. She squealed in excitement, and was quickly hushed by her father, who was quickly growing as pale as the pretty man.
A man dressed in metal came forward and spoke in a loud voice.
“Presenting Prince Lu Ten of the Fire Nation. Son and heir of Crown Prince Iroh of Agni's Light, Dragon of the West and Heir to the Throne. Grandson of Fire Lord Azulon, Fire Made Flesh, Herald of Agni.”
Yue thought that that must be the pretty man as the man in metal took a great breath.
“Also presenting Elder Kanna , and Lady Katara , returned by his gracious Highness to their home in the Northern Water Tribe.”
The silence was palpable as Yue cocked her head in confusion, for surely her spirit sister could not have been so near her for so long without her ever knowing.
The Elder ran down the ramp, La's chosen in hand as she brushed past the Prince towards them.
Yue gaped as she threw herself into the arms of Elder Pakku, who appeared gobsmacked.
“Oh beloved husband!” The Elder cried as she embraced him.
If that had been surprising, Elder Pakku's immediate returning of the embrace was more so, for Yue may have been young, but she was ABSOLUTELY certain that mere hours ago, Elder Pakku did not have a wife.
Yue was close enough to hear La's chosen address Elder Pakku with a question.
“Are you my granddad?”
Unfortunately, Yue had to tune out of that particular conversation as the pretty man approached them. Her father stepped forward to greet him.
“Prince Lu Ten . I am Chief Arnook of the Northern Water Tribe, chosen of Tui and La. I welcome you in peace to Agna Qel'a.”
The Prince bowed slightly to her father, his arms in an odd way as father extended an arm to greet him. The Prince stared at it with apparent confusion as father cleared his throat and moved the arm to gesture to her.
Yue walked forward with all the grace of a 7 year old.
“May I present my only child, Yue .”
Yue tried to copy what the Prince did to greet father, to how much success she didn't know.
As she rose, she saw that he had returned the gesture to her.
“Crown Princess Yue, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
Now Yue had never been called Crown Princess before, and had no knowledge of the significance of the title, nor of the significance of her not objecting to being addressed as such.
“Prince Lu Ten , it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance also.”
The resounding silence across the welcoming party was deafening.
Notes:
Ah Lu Ten. Your training in international diplomacy is non-existent and your awareness of the laws of the water tribe lacking. Also there’s a significant amount of foreshadowing/referencing in this chapter so I’d be interested to see if you guys can pick anything up. Or things which I keep mentioning and are far more important than I’ve previously let on. Realistically you won’t get it until I write future chapters, but it’s cool to include. Fun for me too lol.
Does Lu Ten think that Yue is the future Chieftainess of the Northern Water Tribe in her own right, yes, yes, he does.
Is anyone now going to correct this assumption, no, no they won't.
Also congrats Pakku on your marriage and kids. He's about to have a heart attack lmao.
As always, we love some comments and kudos.
Chapter 20: The Feast
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Chapter WARNING: attempted arranged marriage between a child and an adult. I very obviously do not condone this, but I would consider it to make sense in this situation, considering customs and the sheer potential ramifications of such a match being successful.
91 AG, Palace of the Northern Water Tribe, Agna Qel'a
It had not even been a day since they had landed in Agna Qel'a and already Lu Ten was itching to leave. He'd had training in diplomacy yes, but in internal and familial diplomacy where it was expected that he would not likely be outranked in any room he stood in. As Lu Ten was quickly learning, international diplomacy was a completely different beast. Different customs, even manners were different here. It was confusing and frightening and at the moment Lu Ten was just hoping that they could all walk out of the room alive. At least now he was going to be attending something he had a working understanding of. To honour their arrival the Northern Water Tribe would be holding a feast. Now Lu Ten may not be experienced with inter-cultural communications, but feasts, feasts he could do. Despite the war, and the people who yet starved in the less fertile areas of the Fire Nation, the Imperial Family and the nobles of Caldera regularly held feasts. And of course, every time a noble family was visited by one of Agni's Light a feast was held in their honour. So yes, feasts, feasts Lu Ten could do.
Unfortunately, he had not expected to be 'escorting' the Crown Princess to the table. Elder Kanna , who stood with her husband, who was, to Lu Ten 's understanding, an adviser to the Chief and the most important water bender in the North, had informed him that it was customary for water tribe women to be escorted by their husband, or a close male relative to any event. Lu Ten found this incredibly odd, for once a fire nation person was of an age to attend feasts, if they were unwed, they would walk in alone or with a family group, should their individual accomplishments not be notable enough. He had then noted that he was neither related, married, nor even betrothed to the Crown Princess. When he'd murmured such to Elder Kanna , she had informed him that it was due to his rank and a show of peace. This, Lu Ten could somewhat comprehend, though, it was still terribly odd.
As such Prince Lu Ten of the Fire Nation, stood next to a girl less than half his height and escorted her to the high table which was stood on a dais at the head of the hall. The hall itself was massive, ice ceiling stretched higher than even the walls to the city and the interior sparkled in the light of the fires which lit it.
Together they sat. The Crown Princess was the only child present Lu Ten noted. It was not too odd he supposed. After all, she was the future Chieftainess of the Northern Water Tribe. It would make sense for her to be present at least at the beginning of the feast. Lu Ten figured that as the night drew on the Crown Princess would be escorted back to her chambers for rest, she was only a little girl after all.
Said little girl was now chirping happily at him from the other side of her father about all sorts, as the Chief smiled fondly at her before looking at Lu Ten thoughtfully. Lu Ten could understand this too, for it had been unthinkable less than a year earlier to even him that he would ever find himself seated here. Lu Ten was young, more traditionally open to change, unlike the chief who appeared well in to his adult years. If this was odd for him, then for the chief it must have been beyond confusing.
Lu Ten 's understanding of that look and the intentions of the Chief appeared to be mismatched however, as not two hours into the feast he addressed Lu Ten with a proposition that made him spit take. The conversation was going well initially, with the Crown Princess having just left to relieve herself.
“Prince Lu Ten , my daughter is quite wonderful isn't she?”
“She is indeed Chief Arnook, you have been raising a lovely young girl, I am certain that as an adult she will be a credit to your house.”
The Chief nodded in agreement.
“It saddens me, Prince Lu Ten , that for so long our two nations have been at odds.”
“Indeed. It is unfortunate that the water tribe does not see the good that the fire nation does for this world, despite our own suffering”
Lu Ten parroted the words which he had been taught since birth and the Chief pursed his lips. He composed himself quickly however, and his next words threw Lu Ten into a state of shock.
“The Northern Water Tribe seeks to remedy this dispute. There is no better way to bring two families, two clans, two nations, together than a marriage.”
Up to this point Lu Ten had been nodding along, for he knew that practically, this was often true.
“As such, I would like to offer to you Prince Lu Ten , the hand in marriage of my daughter.”
Lu Ten spat out his drink.
“Forgive me. Your daughter?”
“Indeed. While the age of marriage here is 16, and I am loathe to part with her so soon, if the Fire Lord wishes it so, the wedding can be moved forward. We are of course, eager to remedy this festering dissatisfaction between our nations.”
Lu Ten couldn't quite speak. He was being offered the chance to unite the Fire Nation and Northern Water Tribe peacefully. By marrying a little girl. By marrying a little girl who wasn't even present for this offering. The one thing Lu Ten never wanted. A bride so much younger than him she could have been his daughter (if he were a more promiscuous young teenager of course).
Lu Ten thought he might be sick.
Notes:
Again. I do not condone Chief Arnook's actions! But I think it makes sense with all factors considered. And is a genuinely terrible decision for Lu Ten to have to make.
Hope you found the chapter entertaining. And no, Arnook isn't trying to unite them with the Fire Nation, Lu Ten thinks he is because he's under the impression that Yue is the Crown Princess, which, in the Northern Water Tribe's eyes she isn't. Only a very special, spiritual and beautiful pawn.
Chapter 21: Lu Ten digs himself a hole
Notes:
Again, to reiterate, I don't support child marriage, or betrothing kids. For obvious reasons, this is bad. But makes sense in the fic's world.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Northern Water Tribe, 91 AG
The offer of Chief Arnook hung in the air for minutes before Lu Ten was able to determine how he ought to respond. On one hand, the opportunity to unite the Northern Water Tribe with the Fire Nation would be priceless. Furthermore, taking a Northern Water Tribe Princess as his consort would do well to repay the blood debts for Crown Princess Pipaluk, who would have been Fire Lady had Crown Prince Zhihao lived. On the other hand, Crown Princess Yue was barely 7, and her father appeared to wish them to wed in less than a decade, while the girl remained an actual child. This was not something that Lu Ten wished for, despite the political advantages. Of course, he could take consorts, but it appeared that the Northern Water Tribe was fully monogamous, even among the upper echelons of their society. Lu Ten would not wish to spoil the potential benefits of this match with outrage at his affairs. As such, he would have to spend the rest of his life wed to a girl almost young enough to be his daughter.
It took him far too little time to decide that he couldn't go through with the proposed match. His grandfather would be supremely disappointed in him. Of that Lu Ten was sure.
He would be disappointed if he knew.... Lu Ten could not refuse this marriage if the Chief knew he was not promised, or if he was promised to a lady of lesser rank than the Princess, which was literally almost everyone. But if he...yes...that would do. Lu Ten wouldn't have to worry about grandfather being upset. Nor Uncle Ozai being enraged with his decision. And he'd have over a decade to figure out how to get out of the situation he was about to put himself in. And getting out of this situation would surely be less damaging than attempting to break a betrothal to the Northern Water Tribe's Crown Princess.
It's not as if he'd ever have to go through with it.
Decided, Lu Ten began to speak, and in doing so unknowingly changed the world entirely.
“Chief Arnook, your offer is decidedly generous, and there would be no greater honour for myself than wedding your daughter and joining our two nations”
Lu Ten was so focused on his speech that he didn't notice as the Chiefs face was struck with first happiness, then confusion, before setting on a ghostly white sheen of horror as he realised what the Fire Nation Prince had interpreted his offer to mean.
“However, I am already betrothed. My most noble and intelligent cousin, the Princess Azula , is set to be my bride in 12 years time, when she reaches marriageable age as determined in my own nation. She is a prodigious bender, and letting her leave the main line would be terribly unfortunate. As such, I must refuse this generous offer.”
The colour returned to Chief Arnook's face.
“However, I would be more than happy to reach out to my grandfather the Fire Lord, to explore the possibility of betrothing my young cousin the Prince Zuko to your daughter, to act as her consort once she becomes the Chieftainess of the Northern Water Tribe, as far away as we hope that day is.”
Chief Arnook was completely silent as he considered his response.
Lu Ten smiled politely “It will be wonderful to restore the peace between our two nations.”
Arnook had lived long enough, had read his texts well enough, to know the truth. There was no way that he could refuse this offer. There would be outrage among the tribe, for never had there been a woman who ruled in her own right. But in exchange for this, for an assurance of peace from the Fire Nation, and so soon before the comet returned. The only thing he could do was agree.
And so a pact was made, a hawk was sent to the Fire Nation, and returned over a month later affirming that when both parties were 18, in 102 AC, Crown Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe and Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation would wed.
Travelling alongside this letter was another, with the signed approval of the Fire Lord, Crown Prince Iroh of Agni's Light, Prince Ozai of Agni's Light and Lady Ursa of Hira'a to betroth Princess Azula of the Fire Nation to Prince Lu Ten of the Fire Nation, wedding in 103 AC on the Princess' 18th birthday.

Throne Room, Imperial Palace, 91 AG
Iroh was not sure why his father had gathered all of the family here. Of course the main line of the family sat at the forefront, but all descendants of Sozin lined the walls of the room. Iroh himself had been recalled from the front to be here, even his young nephew and niece were in attendance. Very few things could warrant such a hastily called meeting of all of the descendants of Sozin.
Even fewer of those things were good.
With his only surviving child currently out wandering the world, Iroh had been struck with an existential dread ever since he had received the hawk carrying the orders from his father to return. But not even he could have predicted his father's next words.
“Children of Sozin, descendants of Agni, I have gathering you here today for one reason. I am slowly but surely getting older and closer to Agni's Light. And as of yet, none of my grandchildren are even betrothed!”
At that Azulon looked sharply at Iroh , this was understandable, for while Ozai 's children were still very young, his son was a man grown, and considering their situation ought to have been at least betrothed years ago. His sister in law had suggested her own daughter a year ago, but Iroh had shut that down quickly. Fire Lady Atula had been the half great niece of father after all, and such a match had produced no living children. Their House was small enough as it was, they could not be affording to risk making a match between such close relations, despite little Azula 's talent.
Iroh had wanted to allow his son the opportunity to choose his own match, as he had, but perhaps he had waited too long, allowed Lu Ten too much freedom.
“Fortunately, the eldest of them has decided to remedy this situation.”
He paused for a moment and Iroh sucked in a breathe in shock.
“Prince Lu Ten has proposed matches for all of my beloved grandchildren.”
Iroh 's heart hurt as his father so readily implied that little Atula did not count as one of his grandchildren
“Prince Ozai !” Father summoned Iroh 's younger brother forward.
“Father” Ozai said as he knelt in supplication.
“Feel blessed, for both of your children have been honoured with royal matches.”
Iroh sucked in the air through his teeth and prayed that Azula would go far way to the Earth Kingdom. That her royal match would not be the one he feared.
“The eldest, Prince Zuko , will wed the Crown Princess of the Northern Water Tribe in 11 years time.”
To his side Zuko grew pale in horror, the terrifying stories of the water tribe savages replaying in his mind.
“And your daughter, so talented as she is, has been given the great honour of being selected to be the future Fire Lady of this great Nation. Rejoice.”
Azula grinned in terrifying joy as this was announced.
Ozai on the other hand appeared almost enraged by this decision. Iroh could not see why. His brother, always a spare, would have a hand in raising the future Fire Lady. The girl who would someday be the most powerful woman in the realm. There was no reason to be angry about this.
Not for Ozai anyway.
Smoke trailed from his nose as Iroh breathed deeply.
Lu Ten had gone behind his own father's back to set up a match that he KNEW Iroh disapproved of.
And Iroh was beyond enraged at his only son.
Notes:
"It's not as if he'd ever have to go through with it" famous last words Lu Ten. Famous last words. Fortunately for him, in this fic, he won't.
Though I must admit I'm really tempted to write a cracky one shot where he does have to. For the meme.
....it will surprise no one that I'm a game of thrones and house of the dragon fan as well as avatar.
Anyway, welcome the comments and kudos!
Also, loving the fact that Lu Ten thinks that it will be easier to break off an engagement to Azula (which would make her Fire Lady) than Yue. Like, my boy, you are in for a shock.

Fire Nation, 91 AG
Princess Azula of the Fire Nation had grown up under her father's thumb. Granted, his specific interest in her had only begun once she made her first flame, but ever since then it had been father that Azula had looked to for guidance. Father who had always been vocal in regarding Uncle Iroh and Lu Ten as bastards. Father who had run her through her firebending drills relentlessly until she fainted from exhaustion, in preparation for the day she set foot on the field of battle, or had to defend herself from traitors. Azula was younger than her brother, but she was smarter, talented and generally brighter than him in all areas.
As such, she had grown up thinking that someday Grandfather would see reason, father would be made heir, and weak little Zuzu would be removed from the line. That Uncle Iroh and Lu Ten would ever remain in the way had not registered.
Azula would be Fire Lady someday. She deserved it. It was her birthright.
Now grandfather had given her that birthright. Except not quite. She would be Fire Lady. But not ruling in her own right. Instead she would be Lu Ten 's bride. Azula had been pleased initially. It solved the issue of who she'd wed, and she was sure that she could get rid of Lu Ten easily enough when the time was right. There were no deficits to this in her view.
Father did not take to Grandfather's decision so well. He'd waited until they were in private, in their own wing of the palace, before he blew up.
Azula loved Father.
Azula respected Father.
Azula did not fear Father.
Not even when mother was being beaten in front of her.
Because father was good and right, and Azula wasn't a coward like Zuzu.
Azula looked on from behind the column hiding her, as father ranted and raved and burned. And she dared to wonder. For Azula was not stupid. Despite father's power, even she could see that he was the fool here. It was then that Azula had realised that Father didn't love her. Didn't respect her or want what was best for her.
She was to be Fire Lady. She could certainly be rid of the half-breed Lu Ten easily enough once she'd borne an heir. And then she'd be Regent. Undoubtedly, as soon as she wed she would be the most powerful woman in the Fire Nation, with there being neither a Fire Lady nor a Crown Princess.
Father didn't care about that. Didn't want that for her. He just wanted power for himself.
And Azula 's heart hardened once more. She was a monster to mother and a tool to be readily discarded to father. No one loved Princess Azula of the Fire Nation.
Azula most certainly didn't cry that night, for those of the Blood of Sozin did not cry. But she did think. She did plan. She made considerations.
Azula 's fire bending would of course be important, for assassins were around every corner. But she also had to learn other things. Strategy, history and mathematics would not be enough. Not when she would spend at least 2 years as the consort to a man who outranked her.
Princess Azula of the Fire Nation had to learn how to become the perfect Fire Nation noble consort. Regnant Lords and Ladies were the ones most involved in the war, in strategy, in taxes and revenue and all that went in to managing land and peasants. Consorts had an entirely different role. Somehow, it had never crossed Azula 's mind that she might have to take up the role of the caregiver, the charitable consort, the networker and the spy.
Lords and Ladies Regnant were feared and respected. Their consorts were loved and respected. It was the best and most balanced way to keep the peace. And to secure the position of an heir should their ruling parent pass before their majority.
Uncle Rozuku and Lady Keohso didn't count of course. But they were the exception that proved the rule.
Azula had no clue how to be a consort. She was raised to be a soldier.
So Azula wondered who she could look to for advice. Lo and Li had both seen generations of Imperial Consorts, but they were concubines, and not to be seen tutoring the Princess in the ways of being an Imperial Consort. Aunt Nuan and Grandmother were both dead, and thus inaccessible. And of course, all other female members of the Blood of Sozin were descendants of, or wed to descendants of Prince Rozuku. As such, they would undoubtedly try to sabotage her in favour of Lady Myeong of Keohso, Uncle's most senior female descendant.
That left only one person Azula could look to for mentorship.
Mother.
Azula was well aware that Mother feared and despised her. But she truly had no other choice. So that morning, after they broke their fast and Azula completed her drills, she made her way to mother's quarters.
Azula thought she looked surprised to see her.
“Mother. I require your aid.”
“Yes Azula ? What is it?”
“I need to learn how to make people love me.”

Chapter Text
Fire Nation, 91 AG
When Lady Myeong of Keohso was born there was not much expected of her. The daughter of a second son, whose only sibling was 14 years her elder and worlds apart. At that time it had still been plausible, if not likely, that Uncle Ha-Jun would marry, that father would never rule House Keohso, and that she would remain merely the eldest daughter of a second son, canon fodder or breeding stock.
Then she had lit her first flame, and proved to be both a prodigious bender and incredibly clever. Then Uncle Ha-Jun had turned 50 and made it violently clear to Grandfather that he would never wed.
Then the murmurs of her impending betrothal to the future Fire Lord, Prince Lu Ten of the Fire Nation, began. And suddenly everything was expected of her. She had been 9. The Prince was 15 and they had begun, ever so hesitantly, to look for a bride for him.
Initially Myeong had doubted it would be her, despite her own royal blood, as everyone knew that Grandfather and the Fire Lord despised one another. And so she had been certain that the Fire Lord would never approve her match.
But then the rumours grew, they solidified until one day, during the summer solstice of her 13th Year Grandfather had summoned her to talk.
Myeong remembered kneeling before him, ancient as he was, as he talked and talked. Remembered every breathe of that conversation with complete clarity.
Remembered what he had told her and taken it to heart.
She had held her head high and waited for the day she would be Fire Lady.
Then the so-called Fire Lord Azulon had spoken. Then he had spoken and selected a little girl over her. A girl with no claim, no right, to what was Myeong's. Beside her Grandfather had clenched his fists as his eyes burned with just rage. The little girl was smug. Myeong was burning.
They had waited until they returned to their own palace, only a few yards away from the main one. There the adults had sequestered themselves to a soundproof chamber and begun talks. Her brother Min Jun was allowed in, at 28 and newly wed, he was allowed in. His pretty young wife, only 20 and already pregnant was allowed in. But not her. Grandfather's favourite descendant and she wasn't allowed in. Instead she was left with her infantile cousins, all 8 of the little sh*ts. She burned more.
Smoke left her nostrils as Myeong tried to contain her rage. Contain her hatred for that evil old man, and his kinslayer of a father.
Eventually she could contain it no more as she ran to the courtyard and roared.
All her anger, all her family's vitriol against their usurping kin came out in that one breath.
As she fell to the floor and mourned for all that had been lost, the courtyard burned blue around her.
It took mere minutes for her heart and her resolve to harden.
Myeong would be Fire Lady one day. She deserved it. It was her birthright.
Notes:
The loose facts of this had been set in stone since before I actually wrote this story. But for some reason I never figured out I could actually do something with it. Then I did, so canon has sort of crashed and burned. Oops. Did I tag this fic canon divergence? I should go check.
Anyway comments and kudos are welcomed. Particularly interested as to what you think is going on with this branch of the family -winks-.
That family tree I produced has so many inaccuracies lmao. Gonna get some fun flashbacks first though. Yay more Sozin (sarcastic).

Chapter Text
Agna Qel'a 92 AG
Katara was sad. She missed her mummy, She missed her daddy. She even missed Sokka. On the journey here she'd had Lulu and even Hiroko. Now Katara was alone. She'd liked the Princess, with her snow hair, the few times they'd met. But she had her own teachers while Katara learnt under master Yagoda.
Katara enjoyed training to heal, really she did! And she was really good at it too! But sometimes, when she and the other girls watched the boys training, Katara wished she could learn too. She'd moved through the classes rapidly and now found herself learning alongside girls on the cusp of womanhood, instead of those her own age. That made things lonelier still. Her current classmates treated her like a doll instead of an equal, then ignored her as they giggled looking at the boys training after class.
Katara knew that the Northern Water Tribe was where she was safest, Grangran had made that more than clear. But she missed the South. She missed her brother. She missed Lulu. She missed everyone.
That was why today, Katara had made the decision to go exploring. To find something else to do. Maybe to find a nonbending friend her own age to play with! All Katara knew was that she certainly couldn't bear to be with these giggling 14-year-olds a moment longer.
So while her 'big sisters' were distracted by the boys waving water around (like idiots she might add, Katara was certain she'd be better!), Katara of the Wolf Tribe snuck away.
It was easy.
She wasn't quite sure where to go. The only places she'd been before had been the palace, her and Grangran's new igloo with Grandpa Pakku, the healing buildings, the Great Hall and the Dock.
As she often did when she was lost, Katara looked to the water. And then followed it when a droplet inevitably arose. Fortunately for Katara , no member of the Northern Water tribe had anything but a passing interest in the young girl, and certainly no one saw her chasing after a droplet of water hopping from snow pile to snow pile, all the way to the Spirit Oasis.
It was beautiful she thought. Despite being in the heart of the North Pole, there was green. Katara found herself drawn to the pond. And then entranced by the fish spinning in everlasting circles within it.
Around and around they went, in harmony. Katara was sure that they would never stop.
She didn't notice as the Princess entered the spirit oasis, her nursemaid waiting at the door.
Yue sat by her side and watched with her for a while.
“Tui and La” She said finally, startling Katara out of her trance.
“The Moon and the Ocean”
“Princess Yue !” Katara bowed, as she'd been instructed to.
“Lady Katara .”
“I'm probably not meant to be here am I?”
“Not in the eyes of men.”
Katara bowed her head and grumbled. She'd only been in the tribe for months but she'd already had quite enough of the boys and men here.
“But the spirits are another matter.”
Katara looked up. Across from her the Princess was twirling one of her braids.
“My hair is quite unique I know.”
Katara bowed her head again “Sorry Princess, I know its rude to stare.”
“It is fine. This hair is a blessing you know? Tui gave it to me when she brought me back to life.”
“You died!?” Katara gaped amazed.
“Mhm. But Tui saved me. She speaks to me sometimes, as La speaks to you.”
At this Katara fell into a fit of giggles. “La doesn't speak silly. They're a Great Spirit. They're much too busy to speak to us!”
Yue giggled in return.
“Then how did you find your way here then silly?”
Katara was confused. “I just followed the water droplet.”
Yue laughed again and gestured at the water.
“You're saying that was La!”
“Mhm. You're La's chosen. As I am Tui's. Someday, you will be the Avatar's Waterbending Master. And I am meant to ensure it.”
Katara saw two major issues with that statement, and had no hesitancy in blurting them out.
“But the avatar's gone! And besides, dumb grandpa Pakku won't let me learn how to move the water or make ice. He says its a job for boys.”
“That's why I'm here Katara ! To ensure that you do! Besides. Balance may be everything” at this she gestured to the fish still swimming as one.
“But the water is fluid, waterbending is change and moving. Why shouldn't our roles be so too? I know for a fact that some of the boys are absolutely hopeless during training!”
Katara snickered in agreement.
“So how are we going to do it.”
Yue cocked her head.
“I don't really know yet. But we'll definitely figure it out. Together.”
Katara grinned.
“Together.”
And suddenly, she didn't feel so alone any more.
Notes:
As always we love some comments and kudos :)
Also, yes I've decided to make La's gender fluid. Because they're the ocean spirit. Fluid. Get it? XD. Bad joke. But figure it makes sense lol
Chapter 25: Hokulani of the Blue Fire

Chapter Text
Southern Water Tribe, 4 AG
Four years. That was how long it had been since everything went to shit. Since Hokulani's own grandfather slaughtered her family, and began a genocidal rampage against the world. Any survivors of the Air Nation were scattered to the winds where they once found freedom, the war in the Earth Kingdom raged on relentlessly, and while the Water Tribes had both pushed back the initial onslaught, all expected the Fire Nation to return. Father had had seven children. Now less than half of them lived, all in exile. Despite her own prowess Hokulani felt useless. What was their purpose if they could save no one? Her dragon chuffed beside her. The remaining children of the late Crown Prince were not the only ones in exile of course, two of the ever decreasing in number dragons were with them, her own blue dragon, Bo, and Zhen's own golden one. Kenzo had never had enough fire in him to bond with a dragon, though it was heartening to see him ride the otter penguins.
She'd fought off the onslaught of the Fire Nation with relative ease, for they had no bender with them of her skill. But despite her best efforts she hadn't been able to save the Air Nomad refugees she had seen in the storm. Seeing the Air Bison being struck by lightning, seeing it fall into the waves with mass of orange on board still haunted her dreams. She still heard her babe niece crying. Zhen and Tsering had never told of what had happened on that fateful night. All Hokulani knew of it was that they had awoken with a daughter that day, and left aboard a dragon without her.
She saw her sisters as they sunk into the sea, helpless. Hokulani was haunted by nightmares of things that she had witnessed and images of things she had not. Bo warbled beside her and looked to the sky. Black snow began to fall peacefully at her feet and Hokulani's heart sunk. They were back. She leapt upon Bo immediately, as they set off for the city.
The sound of war was already ringing when she got there. Zhen was mounting his own dragon to take to the skies, as Tsering held the babe in her arms, Kenzo at her side. Men of the Southern Water Tribe readied for war, with all of their benders, man and woman alike running to the gates as the first line of defence. Non bender women and elders grabbed the children and babes as they retreated into the capital building.
There was no need for her to warn them it seemed. Never having left Bo's back, Hokulani took to the skies again, this time beside her brother, the rightful Crown Prince. They saw as the ships landed and the southern water tribe engaged.
They were too distracted by the horrors of war to see him coming.
All Hokulani heard was the dying shriek of a dragon as she turned her head to see Zhen and his golden dragon falling from the sky in a bloody mess. It was grandfather. Hokulani had no time to mourn her brother, no time to attempt to save him as Sozin and his dragon quickly set themselves upon her and Bo. They twisted and swerved, fire spewing from all four of them in an unholy dance. Sozin's dragon grabbed Bo by the wing and suddenly they were all hurtling towards the ice below. Hokulani was certain that she would die. So she sent a wave of blue fire at the head of the dragon, at grandfather himself. They fell through the ice with a giant crack, the water and blood enveloping them all. Hokulani felt it as Bo's spirit left her body. She pushed all of her bending into her limbs, hurtling through the ice cold water and onto the sea ice above. They were too close to the city. Hokulani panted and coughed as she dried the water from her clothes. Hypothermia would soon set in if not.
A wave of fire and a boom alerted her to Sozin. She laughed as she saw him, as drenched as a polar bear dog, no dragon beside him.
“I have slain your companion grandfather! What shall I do next?”
“Traitorous half breed cunt!”
Hokulani cackled, interspersed with coughs.
“Says the genocidal kinslayer.”
“You are no kin of mine, half breed.”
Hokulani stretched herself. Grandfather's new son was only 4 years old. If she could take him down, the throne would be theirs for the taking. Not Zhen's though. Because her sweet brother was now dead. 2/7 of them now remaining. She snarled. Grandfather was powerful. So powerful that most thought only the avatar could take him down. Perhaps that remained true, but Hokulani knew that she had to try.
She came at him with wave after wave of blue fire, lightning crackling about her in a way only she could do. They fought like that for hours, two of the most powerful fire benders to have ever been born, facing off in a battle to the death. They didn't notice the young man sneaking up behind them, nor the 1 year old babe in his arms as he hid behind a snow bank. They didn't notice the retreat of the remaining fleet, 10 warships sent to the depths of the South Pole by the many benders. The only thing on each of their minds was the death of the other. Burns littered both of their bodies as one finally fell. Hokulani might not have quite been her grandfather's match. But she was younger, she was more resilient to strain.
And so, in the depths of the South Pole, with two dragons sinking to the bottom of the ocean, and 10 battle ships approaching upon he horizon to pick up their stranded Fire Lord, Fire Lord Sozin fell to his knees.
Burns littering her body, Hokulani looked down at him, and knew that she had won. That the mantle of Fire Lord would soon be her nephew's. That while it was too late for so many, she had stopped the war.
“Your reign is over Sozin. You have killed my father, your own son. You have killed my mother. You have killed all but one of my brothers and sisters. And you have killed so many more. Now, finally, I bring you justice. Now, I bring you death. I pray to all the spirits that your time in the spirit world will be restless, relentless and torturous. I pray that for what you have done, you never find peace.”
And then she walked towards him. And then her heart lit up as she prepared the killing blow to the monster that had been her grandfather. And then Princess Hokulani of the Blue Fire found herself with a spear through her heart.
Hokulani turned, gasping for breathe that would not come, as she met the blue eyes of her own brother.
She did not even have time to ask why as her body lit up in flames and she breathed no more.
Sozin had time though. Sozin looked into the water tribe man's eyes. While he saw a hint of dragons blood in them, mostly all he saw was fear. Sozin smiled.
“You chose well grandson. I am sure you know as well as I do that I would always have won this bought. You have bought yourself a favour.”
Kenzo gulped, his actions not yet coming to him. He had to. He had to. Grandfather would have won. Grandfather always wins. He had to.
“If I offer you the knowledge that I have slain Tsering? That I will gift you their last remaining child?”
“If that is so then I offer you two favours.”
“It is so” Kenzo said, sweating. He had to do this. His wife was pregnant, grandfather needed to leave them alone. Hokulani wouldn't really have won. Grandfather was too powerful. He had to. He had to.
“Good boy”
Kenzo's nephew whimpered in his arms.
“Leave the Southern Water Tribe alone. Attack everyone else however much you please. Just leave us alone.”
“So be it. So long as I live no firebender will set foot in the South Pole.”
In his state of panic, Kenzo did not note the words of his grandfather after “so be it”. Perhaps if he had his next favour would have been different.
“Secondly, I will hand you my nephew. I ask that he be raised safely, in a position of plenty. He is only a babe. He is able to learn his place.”
Sozin chuckled wetly. “So be it. I do still need a spare after all.”
Kenzo breathed a sigh of relief, believing his demands to have been met. He placed the wailing orphan babe on the ice, and stepped away.
“His name is Rozuku.”
Sozin grabbed the one year old with little care. “Prince Rozuku, my second son” he chuckled.
And former Prince Kenzo walked away and didn't look back.
Notes:
YUP. That'd be that branches secret. When Myeong said it was her birthright to be Fire Lady she wasn't kidding lmao. And yes, Hokulani the BAMF that she was almost stopped the war a whole 96 years earlier. RIP.

Chapter Text
Southern Water Tribe, 92 AG
Sokka grumbled as he poked his spear into the water yet again. He was out in the canoe fishing with Bato as Dad stayed with mother through her labours. They had been out there for almost a full day now and despite his talent, Sokka was getting quite bored with fishing. Though, staying out here did mean that he didn't have to face his newborn sibling, so it wasn't all bad.
When mum and dad had first told him that he'd be having another baby sibling he had been livid, Sokka wouldn't lie, and despite the months that had past since that conversation he remained un-enchanted with the concept. Because Sokka already had a little sister, despite how little anyone talked of her these days. Sokka knew she wasn't imaginary, that Tara and Grangran had both been real. That they both were still real. Sokka couldn't see why his parents were so eager to replace his little sister. because Tara was gone but she wasn't dead. Sokka was absolutely certain of that. He would know if Tara was dead, he would.
Bato had stopped talking a while back, busying himself with untangling the netting. Sokka was certain that he ought to have finished that job by now, but if anything the netting just seemed to be getting worse. It took another few hours of Sokka's grumbling and sighing, accompanied by Bato's anxious twiddling, before the man slapped his knees.
“It's getting late. We'd best head back.”
Sokka was yet to figure out how Bato knew that, considering they were currently in Agni's season, with only a few hours of darkness each 'night', but he certainly wasn't complaining.
They'd drifted out rather far in their time at sea, so paddling back through the flows certainly took a while. It seemed like forever, the long trek back home, to mum, to dad, to it . Sokka was a bundle of dread when they finally approached the village. One of the younger women in the village ran toward them, her own babe strapped to her back.
“Is it done!?” Bato asked
“Yes, the Chief's wife has delivered a daughter. Hale and hearty.”
Sokka pursed his lips. He could have forgiven it if it had been a brother. That it was a girl was far worse. He bet they'd name it Tara. They already wanted to replace his sister. Why wouldn't they do it fully, name and all.
While Bato practically ran back to their igloo, Sokka dragged his feet. Warriors clapped him on the back, girls twittered their congratulations, and Sokka glared at the floor.
By the time he finally made it back home Sokka was wishing that La (who absolutely wasn't real) had swept them away. Anything would be better than facing this.
Then dad opened the curtain covering the entrance and beckoned him in and Sokka knew he could put it off no longer.
Mum was wrapped up in furs, a bundle in her arms, and sweat lining her forehead. By the flames sat the most spiritual of the elders, preparing to seek for the girl's name. Sokka thought this was dumb. Almost as dumb as spirits.
“Come and meet her Sokka.”
Sokka didn't move.
“Come along darling, come and meet your youngest sister.”
And Sokka would never ever admit that those words had made him tear up. Not once.
He shuffled forward. Closer and closer until he could almost see her. Mum angled her towards him, and in the background he could hear the noises of the Elder looking to the ancestors and the spirits for guidance on the girl's name.
The babe was pale, as was normal for newborns, a few strands of dark hair lay on her head, and when her eyes opened they were blue, like mum's, like dad's, like his own, ... like Tara's. But as she looked up at him and yawned, Sokka could have sworn there were specks of gold in there. Which obviously wasn't possible, because they were water tribe, and water tribe eyes were blue. Sokka opened his mouth, then closed it again, for surely if the girls eyes were specked with gold, mum would notice and say something. It was just a trick of the light.
At their side the elder gasped, the name coming to her.
“The ancestors and spirits speak as one my chief.”
Dad nodded for her to continue.
“They wish for her to be bestowed with the name of a great bender.”
At his side, little to Sokka's own knowledge, his parents grew pale.
“The babe's name is Hokulani .”
Sokka shivered at the pronouncement, said with the weight of a million voices, unnatural in some way. The fire flickered and the wind blew and the waves calmed as her name was pronounced to the world.
“For the waterbender who once took Sozin to his knees?” Dad questioned, in shock.
The elder nodded.
“Great things are heralded for you it seems, my daughter. Great things indeed.”
And little Hokulani, with her blue-gold eyes, yawned and fell to sleep.
Notes:
Yup, they have another child in this fic. I figure that with the limited resources of the South pole, they probably operate on an unofficial two child policy. No Katara, only one kid. So, new baby.
Also yes, in the southern water tribe, Hokulani is hailed as a heroic waterbender. History is written by the victors, and Kenzo really wanted everyone to forget his fire nation heritage. Also, the south pole just really suffered due to the raids.

Chapter Text
Caldera, 92 AG
The sight that had awaited Lu Ten when the Kai finally completed the last portion of its journey through the Great Gates of Azulon and into the First Lord's Harbour was a grand one. Citizens from all walks of life lined the Royal Plaza, with Firebending soldiers guarding his receiving line. Lu Ten was dressed militarily now, an Imperial Firebender dressed to strike the fear of the spirits into all of his enemies. Sharply pointed armour covered all of his body but his head, upon which a crowned top knot sat.
While dressing in such a way to arrive in a Fire Nation city, to greet members of his family, may have felt normal before, now Lu Ten felt differently. He had experienced international diplomacy, he had attended a festival where the people loved him instead of fearing and detesting him. In both situations he had dressed softly. In the heart of the Northern Water Tribe, he had had not one piece of armour on him and had returned in one piece with a marriage treaty in hand.
And now, to greet his family members after more than 2 years he was wearing his most intimidating suit of armour. The fact that this disconcerted him was disconcerting in and of itself.
Lu Ten stepped of the ship which had been his home for the past couple of years to a roaring crowd and an extensive receiving l ine ma de up of ministers, their consorts, and of course, his family members.
Seemingly the only ones not present were the only two which outranked him, Father and Grandfather. Every other member of the Imperial Family was present and accounted for.
Of cou rse, the first to greet him was Uncle Ozai, who, as is tradition, looked upon Lu Ten as a farmer might a maggot-slug. Uncle Ozai, who had never deigned to serve in the army or the navy was dressed in robes befitting a second son of the Fire Lord, and, with seemingly great effort, bowed his head to Lu Ten.
The next was Aunt Ursa, who was as pale as the snows of the north, with even heavy makeup unable to hide the bags beneath her eyes. Lu Ten frowned as she went to bow, pulling her into an embrace.
Zuko was next, he who had been bouncing on his heels ever since Lu Ten had come into sight . The 9 year old rushed him quickly, his formal dress with its sharpened militaristic edges now jarring to Lu Ten. Both Zuko and Azula always dressed in these militaristic styles at formal occasions, Lu Ten recalled. For some reason this now disturbed him.
It was even more jarring when he finally laid eyes on little Azula, his ... betrothed. Lu Ten really did need to find a way out of t hat. B ut that was neither here nor there, for before him stood a young girl that Lu Ten did not recognise. He hadn't seen her since she was 5 he supposed, and children are wont to change rapidly. But still, it seemed odd. Gone was the smirk, the taunting grin and cruel laugh. Gone were the militaristic styles of dress. Gone were the mannerisms of a confident girl, certain of her own superiority.
The Azula who stood before him today was unrecognisable. She had her hair in a top knot, as she always had previously, but it was now adorned with a relatively large sized red and gold flame, denoting her status as both an Imperial Princess and as the betrothed of the heir of the Crown Prince. She stood demurely, and her robes were likely the most jarring aspect of her. For unlike her brother, unlike any way Lu Ten had ever seen her, Azula was wearing the robes of a princess, embroidered in gold. There were no baggy pants or loose fitting tunic to increase mobility, no sharp armour adorned with gold. No, instead Azula was dressed like Aunt Ursa, like Princess Nuan. She was dressed like a girl planned to be a consort, not a warrior of the main line. She was acting like a girl who planned to be consort.
Still shocked, Lu Ten greeting her briefly, this time with a bow, for the girl who, in the minds of much of the world (though certainly not himself), would some day be the Crown Princess Consort, the Fire Lady. Lu Ten did not notice his Uncle grow red with rage at his side.
He moved on quickly, trying his best not to look back at his cousin in surprise. Uncle Rozuku was next, the old man glared at him so icily that Lu Ten thought he might very well be trying to strike lightening through his heart. Lu Ten had been meant to marry his most senior female descendant he recalled, a talented fire bender despite the fact that the girl's parents and brother were all non-benders.
It was little surprise that he was treated to the same eyes as he went along the line, with the Line of Azulon ending with Azula, now there were only the descendants of his brother Rozuku, all of which appeared to want Lu Ten dead.
Uncle Rozuku's wife, the old Lady Ji-Su of Keohso, Head of her House. Their heir, Lord Ha-Jun of Keohso, the Minister of Education. Their second son Lord Ha-Byeong and his wife Lady Mei. Their non-bending son Min-Jun and his wife Mamushi, who, if Lu Ten recalled correctly, had served in the Fire Navy since the age of 16, and had returned to active service only recently, after their heir Ye-Jun was born. Neither of them seemed overly grateful for his congratulations on the birth of their son however.
Finally Lu Ten came to her. The 15 year old Lady Myeong. She had grown up since he had last seen her Lu Ten noted, beginning to appear more akin to a Lady, now standing in ceremonial armour. The girl was still a child though, she had not yet learned how to hide the fire and rage in her eyes and in her heart. Lu Ten smiled at her. She snarled at him.
His other relatives did not receive the same level of attention, though the Tys with their grey eyes did make Lu Ten cock his head. Before he'd travelled it had never truly registered with him that those eyes were so unusual, both in their shape and in their colour. Now it did, and Lu Ten could not help but pause as he looked into the eyes of the septuplets. It was odd, he noted, that the eyes of air nomads could be found in a family which had been pure fire for centuries.
Lu Ten b rushed it off and spoke to the awaiting line of ministers instead. He was certain it was simply an oddity of the spirits, like the fact that there were identical septuplets. Just a miracle of the spirits.
Notes:
hiya! So, Lu Ten is back in the Fire Nation. I'm sure this will go smoothly.
How do we like PrincessConsort!Azula
Also yes, Mamushi is canon Mamushi. For the meme. She's a bit of a different character here though, since she's married to someone who doesn't exist in canon.

Chapter Text
Caldera, 92 AG
Asahi looked on at the procession in mild disbelief, her six year old daughter, still at the breast for some meals, clutched at her side. Hundreds of soldiers lined the processional route guarding the 7 large palanquins as they made their way up to the palace. While 6 of them were shaded by curtains, giving onlookers no clue which royal or nobles were seated within them, the largest, and most intricately decorated one was left open faced, the easily identifiable face of Prince Lu Ten , and his cousin, the girl he was to wed, visible to all.
Asahi hadn't believed it when the announcement had finally trickled through to them. That the Crown Prince's son would be betrothed to his cousin, that had not been a surprise, for it was relatively common amongst all classes of society, for numerous reasons. But that the 21 year old Prince would wed his 7 year old cousin. That was bemusing to her. Of course, they would not wed until she was 18, and he 32, but still. For a girl only one year older than her own daughter to have already been told what her future would be, who she would wed, how she would act. It was disturbing to her. At least the prince looked as concerned with this situation as Asahi felt, she saw his face crinkle, and his eyes keep glancing over to the little girl sitting next to him, perfecting poised, with a perfect, likely practised, smile.
Asahi couldn't help but wonder whether the little Princess would ever have the chance to think for herself, to have any true agency, or if she, like so many girls before her, would be naught but her parent's and husband's pawn, a broodmare for political gain.
Asahi might have been a single mother, her husband having been killed not so long earlier in the Earth Kingdom, but somehow it was she who found herself pitying the princess.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Azula smiled serenely down at the gobsmacked peasants, none of whom were able to take their eyes off of Azula and her darling cousin. Much to her irritation she had had to ride down with Zuzu, Mother and Prince Ozai , but on her return she sat next to Lu Ten in their palanquin, for all of Caldera to gaze upon in awe. She was rightfully, delighted. Both for the adoration of these puny peasants, and the fact that Prince Ozai was relegated to the place of a hidden and unimportant second son. It was truly delightful.
Ever since Grandfather had named her as the future Fire Lady , Azula had been working tirelessly to make herself into the most perfect Fire Lady Consort possible. She'd even gone so far as to visit some of the peasant schools and orphanages in the area, to seem 'close to the people' and 'charitable'. Of course, while infrequent now, Azula was well aware that such charitable ventures would have to grow more common as she grew older, and thus more respected, but for now, it would have to do to sow the seeds.
Mother sometimes smiled at her now, and even grandfather had awarded her, regularly bringing her in to sit in on his audiences with people, though she'd yet to be allowed into any war related audiences or meeting. This was, of course, understandable, as once she was consort, grandfather had told her that he expected there to be no war to discuss. So yes, Azula was well on her way to her rightful station as Fire Lady . And she was bubbling with joy.
Chapter Text
Caldera, 92 AG
It had felt like an entire avatar cycle before the palanquin Lu Ten was riding in with his baby cousin was set upon the ground. Finally, he could escape. Lu Ten offered a hand to Azula after he stepped out of the carriage. The Azula of two years ago would have brushed past it as she jumped out of the carriage. This Azula simply smiled demurely at him as she took his hand and stepped out daintily. It was beyond disconcerting.
Fortunately, he would not have to interact with this new version of his cousin for much longer, as they were met by one of the senior palace servants, who summoned Lu Ten for an audience with his father and grandfather.
Lu Ten couldn't help but glance about the palace walls as he made his way to the throne room where he had been so many times before. Having visited another palace he now saw things in a new ight, or lack thereof. It no longer escaped his notice that the palace, the home of Agni's chosen, of the true children of Agni's light, was dingy and dark. The was no light within these walls save for the fire lamps which poofed smoke into the already dark environment.
It felt so wrong.
As the great doors opened to the sight of the flames concealing the imposing figures of his father and grandfather, both seated high upon the dias, that sense of wrongness only heightened. It was one thing for this to be the greeting of officials, servants and petitioners. These imposing figures, closer to Agni than humans, facing down their subjects, this made sense to Lu Ten . But he was family. This was his father and grandfather. And they were so separated from him.
Why was this normal?
Lu Ten knelt, as was expected of him, thoughts and doubts flowing through his brain and his heart.
“Fire Lord Azulon. Crown Prince Iroh . I, Prince Lu Ten of the Fire Nation, heir and son of Crown Prince Iroh , son of Fire Lord Azulon and Fire Lady Ilah, and of the late Crown Princess Nuan, Second daughter of Earth King He, offer to you my humblest and sincerest apologies. I was sent on a mission to find and capture the avatar. I have failed. I beseech you for mercy and forgiveness.” he prostrated himself.
...this was his father and grandfather.
“Rise my grandson. You may not have returned with the avatar, but you have returned having given us not only an easy and peaceful means to control of the Northern Water Tribe; but an intelligent heir, who has already proven himself capable of siring children.” Though Lu Ten could not hear it, at this his father Iroh 's breath caught.
Lu Ten looked at his grandfather in confusion. Fortunately for him, Azulon saw fit to elaborate.
“Do not tell me you did not think word would reach me here of your bastard Prince Lu Ten . You should bring her to my quarters for meditation tomorrow. I should like to meet this 'Lady Katara ', my only great-grandchild so far.” Azulon said.
Lu Ten gulped...fuuuuuucckkk.
“Thank you for your consideration grandfather. However, I regret to inform you that as she is a waterbender, I have left her with her grandparents in the North Pole.”
“Ah, I see. A wise decision Lu Ten , a waterbending daughter of a fire nation Prince with earth kingdom blood would have made a valuable pawn for our enemies. In any case, she has been seen at official events, and by top generals. As such, please do inform the historians of her mother's name and her own. The water witch you must have slept with will be raised to the status of Noble Consort. While I am gladdened you have already displayed your virility, please do try to be more selective with your conquests. Your dragonsblood already runs thin as it is. We do not need it to be diluted any further.”
Oh dear Agni this was his grandfather.
“You are truly generous great Fire Lord. I appreciate your great wisdom. You need not worry about the blood of my heir. My future bride is certainly as fire nation as a dragon!”
Why was he joking, why was he joking, why was he joking.
Azulon chuckled loudly.
“That is to be certain. But women cannot be trusted to produce living children on a regular basis. You should know this better than most, for your mother did not bear you herself. And could produce no children who lived past childhood.”
That hurt. Lu Ten hated to think of his stepmother's suffering. Despised any thought of Atula's death. That his own grandfather would brush his little sister's life off so casually. His stepmother deemed a failure with such callousness. It sickened him.
This was his family.
“You are wise.” he ground out. “It would probably be for the best for me to collect my consort from the South as soon as possible, as she has already proven herself. Once I return, I will take others as consorts, if that is what you would advise.”
“As I said, an intelligent heir. Bring your betrothed with you. It would do her good to see the world, and to begin to command her lessers who are also her sisters and the mothers of her children.”
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Lu Ten didn't have a fucking consort. He'd slept with a couple of women during officer training, and even a man, though he didn't like to think or speak about that. But he didn't have a fucking consort! Let alone a child. Lu Ten silently bemoaned the situation he'd dug himself into.
“Of course, grandfather. It would be a delight to have Azula by my side.”
“Very good. And once you return, perhaps you can take the Myeong girl as your consort. She's of good stock, and it might shut my brother up if he knew the girl had the chance of birthing a future ruler.”
Somehow Lu Ten doubted that ... strongly.
“Of course grandfather. I shall consider it thoroughly.”
And thus Lu Ten left once more, and preparations for yet another lengthy voyage began.
Chapter Text
Agna Qel'a, Northern Water Tribe, 92 AG
The flames of the healing hut flickered, lighting the hut in an eery glow. Yagoda sat beside her old friend Kanna, and her young protégé Katara, who, with only a year of formal training in the healing arts of waterbending, was already nearing mastery. Neither Yagoda’s mastery, nor Katara’s prodigious talent had been enough to save Kanna. For even the greatest of healers were helpless when the spirits decided to take someone into their midst.
Kanna had been sleeping for weeks now, kept living through influxes of chi, snow melted into her mouth, and gruel. Yagoda had tried everything; Pakku had scoured the Great Library for any information; and Katara had fainted from exhaustion. There was naught to be done. Only the Avatar could save Kanna, and the Avatar had been gone longer than Yagoda had been alive. She supposed it was a small blessing, that she had had the opportunity to spend an entire year with her old friend before she passed, after having lost her for so many decades. It did not feel like a blessing now. Now all Yagoda could feel was regret for the time lost.
When the Chief had announced the arrival of the Fire Nation War ship, she had been shocked. When he had announced the ship was to be let through the entrance to Agna Qel'a, well, to say that she had been apprehensive would be a vast understatement. But in they came, and for the first time in her life, Yagoda bore witness to the Fire Nation. At first, she had thought that the young man with the flame crown had been a woman, so short and beautiful he was. But then his herald had announced him, and that beauty turned to ice in Yagoda’s eyes. For he was none other than the future ruler of that evil nation.
Yagoda’s attention to the prince had been cut short however, by elder and young girl who had emerged from behind him. Kanna. A name that had not been uttered in the Northern Water Tribe for decades. Kanna who had rushed into the arms of the man she had fled from. Kanna, who despite her age, was nimble on her feet and glowed with the youth of a woman half her age. Kanna.
Yagoda hadn’t been able to believe it at first. But then, following the Fire Prince’s departure they had had the opportunity to talk more, as she was tasked with teaching the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribes.
Kanna’s son and daughter-in-law had decided that it was for the best that their only daughter was sent to the North the moment that she bended for the first time, breaking an ice flow apart. They had no other choice, for the child was the last known bender of the South Pole. Before she had slept, Kanna had drawn Pakku close and spoke words to him that only the spirits could know. The last words she had said to Yagoda were good night.
A trained healer, Yagoda could sense it as Kanna’s time drew closer than ever and called for one of her many apprentices to fetch Master Pakku to sit with her in the end.
Yagoda shook Katara gently to wake her from her slumber the moment that Pakku entered the chamber, quiet and sombre.
And so they sat, Yagoda at Kanna’s head, one of Kanna’s hands held in Pakku’s, the other in her granddaughter Katara’s. Until, as the full moon reached its zenith, Kanna of the Water Tribes, mother of Chief Hakoda of the White Wolf Tribe, Grandmother of Katara the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribes, breathed no more.
Katara broke down into verbal sobs, begging her grandmother to return to her, as Pakku and Yagoda watched on, their own grief manifesting in silent tears drenching their faces.
Chapter Text
South Pole, 92 AG
At seven years of age Princess Azula of the Fire Nation had never left the shores of her homeland. As she took in the sights of the icebergs and sheet ice, the creatures she did not even have words for, it hit Azula how different the world was from the confines of the palace. This was not the first time that Azula had thought this of course, it had been a months long voyage after all. But still, these sights, these noises, this temperature, all combined into something more overwhelming than anything she had faced before.
Mother had not accompanied her, with Grandfather apparently wishing to teach Azula some responsibility. Fortunately, Azula had been allowed to bring Ty Lee and Mai with her. Ty Lee’s mother Ty Suriyo was also accompanying them, both to ‘supervise’ Azula’s interactions with Lu Ten and to help to continue their studies. Azula and Ty Lee looked like such opposites, even Azula sometimes forgot that the other girl was her second cousin thrice removed. That while all of her children were non-benders, Ty Lee’s mother Ty Suriyo, was a firebender, and ninth in the line of succession to the Dragon Throne, being descended from two of Fire Lord Sozin’s children - Azula and Rozuku.
Cousin Suriyo was a stern woman, which was surprising to say the least, considering the character of her daughters. But she was a talented firebender, and had been a talented officer before she had retired after her victory in the battle that had killed her sister Ty Lin. She was a more than decent tutor for Azula to learn from. She also made sure that none of her three charges ever had a hair out of place, particularly when they were having dinner with Lu Ten. She’d attacked Azula today with the ferocity of a dragon, combing her hair until Azula was sure that she’d be bald by the end of it, draping her with robes upon robes upon robes. Azula felt more like a Hippo cow than a human.
Azula stood on the deck next to Cousin Suriyo, Ty Lee and Mai right behind them, as they approached the small settlement. The settlement where Lu Ten’s Noble Consort resided. Azula still did not quite know what to do with that information. While she had been aware of it for months now, she was not sure how, or if, it should be addressed. That Lu Ten had already proven himself capable of having children was a relief for both Grandfather and Azula. Azula might not particularly want any babies, ugly little things that they were, but she knew they were necessary. There were only nine people currently eligible for accession to the Dragon Throne. Three of those people were on this very ship. Even if she wasn’t to marry Lu Ten, Azula knew that Grandfather would expect her to have children.
So yes, knowing of this child, the ‘Lady Katara’ was a relief. That the girl was a waterbender moreso. But that Grandfather wanted Lu Ten to bring the girl’s mother home with him. Azula didn’t like that. That he wanted Lu Ten to take Azula’s greatest rival Myeong as a second consort, Azula liked that even less. While the royal historians had not yet published the latest update to the Imperial Family Tree, Lu Ten’s child had been sketched in, as had her mother, Kya. Azula sneered at the thought of the savage’s name. Kya who had borne Lu Ten a daughter five years ago. A daughter who yet lived. Azula was extremely conscious of the fact that she was only seven. That it would be over a decade until she would be wed to Lu Ten and able to attempt to have a baby. In those 12 years the Water Witch might be able to give him six or more children. Myeong was 15. If her parents did not insist Lu Ten wait until she was the right age to marry (and why would they, Azula wouldn’t), Myeong might be able to do the same. Azula tried not to worry with her lip. Upwards of 12 children by consorts before Azula could even produce one of her own. And that was presupposing she would be able to. Aunt Nuan had failed, and she and Uncle Iroh were unrelated. Fire Lady Atula hadn’t even been able to produce one child. And she was Grandfather’s grandniece.
The ship stopped on the sheet ice, too solid to be moved, with a great thud and a worrying Azula was ushered to the exit. She was positioned only a step or two behind Lu Ten, who was, like Azula, dressed in much finery. Too much finery for this tiny village in Azula’s opinion.
The exit for the ship lowered and Azula was met with more white than she had ever seen before. They exited flanked by soldiers and cousin Suriyo, Ty Lee and Mai waving them off from the deck of the ship. They didn’t have to walk for long before they were greeted by the savages. They were giant, with many of the soldiers standing a head taller than Lu Ten. Lu Ten spoke in a language Azula didn’t recognise. She only heard the name “Kya” and struggled not to sneer. The soldier at the front of the party looked confused for a moment, and Lu Ten spoke in that strange language some more. Then she was being gestured to. Then Suriyo was ushering her forward. And before she knew it, Lu Ten was telling her to bow. Telling Azula to bow to a savage. She really did struggle not to sneer at than, sparks almost coming out of her hands.
“This is to be your bride.” The savage said something again. Azula hated it. Hated not understanding.
“She is yes. I think it would be best if we could talk in private. I don’t think that you will like what I have to say.” Lu Ten responded in that savage language.
“You may be surprised Prince Lu Ten. You may have come at just the right time. Your betrothed looks of a similar age to my son, Sokka, and some of the other children of the village. If it would be agreeable to you, we would be happy for her to spend time with them, accompanied, of course, by your cousin.”
Azula saw Lu Ten nod before he turned to her.
“Azula, the chief has offered for you to spend time with his son, and with the other children of the tribe. I believe this would be a good learning opportunity, if you are so inclined to take it. Lady Suriyo, I believe you speak Southern Water?”
Cousin Suriyo nodded to the affirmative. Azula knew that she didn’t actually have an option.
“Of course, my Prince.” Azula said, bowing. Lu Ten smiled tightly at her, and Azula worried a little more.
Then a tall man was guiding her and cousin Suriyo away as Lu Ten walked with the seeming Lord of the village to a snow building not so far away. As she was led into the noisy room, filled with children looking at her with a varied mix of emotions, Azula breathed in deeply. She was a Princess. She was the future Fire Lady. She could deal with some savage children.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lu Ten had gone over what he would say to Katara’s parents many times since his grandfather had given the order. He’d obsessed over it even. Nothing ever sounded quite right. Then again what could? Oh hello, Chief Hakoda and Kya! Funny story, the entire fire nation is under the impression that your daughter is my get, and that I slept with Kya when I was a teenager! That was sure to go down well.
Lu Ten hadn’t been meant to know that Katara was, in reality, the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe. But the girl had mentioned it off-hand, with an obliviousness that only children possess, during their time together in the North. Lu Ten was honestly impressed that the girl hadn’t mentioned it earlier. He knew by then, what danger her status put her in. And Lu Ten cared for the little girl. Felt for her almost how he had felt about Atula. So, Lu Ten had not breathed a word. Not to Kanna, not to any of his crew or family, not even to Agni. Not until he off handedly, accidentally, noted to his grandfather, the fucking Fire Lord, that his ‘consort’ was in the South. Lu Ten thanked all the spirits daily that neither grandfather nor father had connected those particular dots.
He digressed. The Chief, Hakoda, led him into an igloo. A woman who could only be his wife, could only be Kya, sat there. A young child in her arms, not even a year old. Another warrior followed them in.
“Lady Kya.” Lu Ten greeted her, glancing over at the other warrior warily, for this was not a conversation for all ears to hear.
“Bato is my dearest friend Prince Lu Ten. Whatever you have to say to my wife and I can be said to him also.”
Lu Ten cleared his throat. No words came out. No words worked. Lady Kya looked at him in worry.
“I…this is difficult. I was recently journeying the world. Searching for the avatar.”
At this the three Water Tribe people frowned. Right…possibly not the right thing to say.
“On my journey in the South I came across a ship in distress. This ship was carrying two people on it, an elder and a young child. Kanna, and Katara.” Kya gasped in horror.
“I had my crew rescue them, and Elder Kanna said that they were returning to their home in the Northern Water Tribe. As I was on a fool’s quest, I saw fit to return them. I am grateful that I did, as returning them has brought peace between the Fire Nation and the North. My cousin, Prince Zuko, is to marry the Crown Princess of the Northern Water Tribe, Princess Yue.”
At this Hakoda, Bato and Kya looked to one another confused, for women were not allowed to be Chief to the best of their knowledge. Lu Ten, enveloped in his story did not notice.
“Unfortunately, during our travels to the North, I may have given quite a few people, important people, the wrong impression about my relationship to your daughter, Katara. Word got back to my grandfather, the Fire Lord, and well …. my family is under the impression that she is my daughter,… that you are my consort.” Lu Ten knew there was not a word in Water for consort, so used mistress instead. He bowed his head in apology before his next words.
“Chief Hakoda, Lady Kya, I have been ordered to bring my consort back to the fire nation, where she will live in luxury. I completely understand if it is not possible, but if it is… I need a water tribe woman to return to the fire nation with me. To pretend to be Katara’s mother.” He finished and only the crackle of the fire could be heard within the igloo.
“There is no need to pretend. I will go with you.”
“Kya no!” The Chief shouted.
Lu Ten looked up in shock.
“This is the answer we have prayed to the spirits for Hakoda. Presented to us on a silver platter. It would be folly not to take it. I won’t let my daughter leave with some stranger!”
“She has a good point ‘Koda. We could not handle Katara here, not safely. Hokulani. She would be impossible, and you see how she weakens as the sunless days come closer. It is a solution. To save her.”
The chief buried his head in his hands as his friend placed a hand on one of his shoulders, his wife a hand on the other shoulder. Lu Ten felt incredibly confused and out of place. He really did not want to be here. Was it too late to back out?
The chief let out a watery chuckle. “Why are you always fucking right.” He sat defeated as Kya spoke again.
“I will go with you Prince Lu Ten. As your consort. I will not give you any children however. My heart belongs here, to my husband.”
“Of course!” Lu Ten interrupted before she could speak again.
“Good. I must ask a favour of you however. My younger daughter. She has something in her that none of us expected. We do not know where she has inherited it from, perhaps from a distant ancestor, perhaps it is a new blessing by the spirits.” Kya spoke again and motioned to hand her baby to Lu Ten.
Lu Ten had never held a baby before, not Zuko, not Azula. He sat awkwardly with her, Kya’s hand still stroking through dark locks. The baby was strangely pale for a water tribe child, that was immediately evident. Then she opened her eyes and Lu Ten knew what Kya wanted of him. She did not even have to say the words. Lu Ten stared into golden eyes that looked exactly like Zuko’s in shock.
“My younger daughter. She is a firebender.” Kya said.
As if on command, the girl sneezed sparks at him and giggled.
Notes:
Hi y'all! Happy new year! As always, comments and kudos appreciated. Lu Ten is becoming a professional at accidental baby/child acquisition lmao
Yes, Katara was actually born in 85 AG, but Lu Ten would have been 14 then, and I can't see Iroh letting him leave the fire nation before the age of 15 AT THE EARLIEST. Also 13 years + the s word is, ew. ew. ew. ew. So Lu Ten is bluffing it and hoping that Katara stays small for her age and/or never leaves the North.

Chapter Text
Zuko had very rarely laid eyes on his grandfather. As Fire Lord, Grandfather Azulon was nearly constantly occupied, with the few hours he was not busy being usually taken up by rest. Zuko had certainly never spent time with his grandfather alone, with just the two of them. As such, when he received the summons to join Grandfather and Mother for their evening tea ceremony, he was nervous, and was promptly made fearful once Mother had poured the tea and Grandfather dismissed her. For the first time in his nine years of life he was sat alone with the ruler of the Fire Nation, Zuko’s own grandfather.
Zuko kowtowed before him. “Fire Lord Azulon, it is an honour to sit with you this evening. May the light of Agni shine upon you for decades to come.”
“Prince Zuko. Greetings. Rise now.”
“As you will it Fire Lord.” Zuko rose to a kneeling position, trying desperately to breathe normally.
Silence came upon them as the Fire Lord went to take his tea. After he drank, Zuko raised his own cup with trembling hands to sip the hot leaf water.
“As you well know, Prince Zuko, it is the honoured duty of our family, one bestowed by Agni himself to care for Agni’s people, all across the world.”
Zuko was silent, but nodded in acknowledgement.
“You will not be the first Prince of the Fire Nation to wed a Northern Water Tribe Princess. Indeed, as you well know my honoured elder brother, the late Crown Prince Zhihao of Agni’s Light, was wed, with the approval of our Father, Fire Lord Sozin the Great, to Princess Pipaluk of the Northern Water Tribe.”
Zuko continued nodding along “Yes, Fire Lord”
“You shall be the first Fire Nation Prince to act as Consort to a Water Tribe Princess however. It will be your duty to save your new people from their savage ways, to bring them truly into Agni’s Light.”
Zuko wasn’t sure how he’d be able to do that … it seemed so big.
“Yes, Fire Lord, I shall serve Agni’s will”
“You are a good Prince, Prince Zuko, and shall, someday, make a wonderful Chief Consort.”
“Thank you, Fire Lord,”
Fire Lord Azulon gestured to one of the servants, who had been so silent Zuko had forgotten they were even there. The servant walked over to them and laid on the tea table in front of them a set of scrolls, bound in a silvery leather.
“My goodsister, Princess Pipaluk brought these with her when she came to this great nation to wed my brother. They contain details of water tribe customs, histories, and waterbending techniques.”
At this Zuko looked up in shock. “Forgive me, Fire Lord Azulon, but why would I need these?”
“To save the savages from their own ways, you must first understand those ways, and why they are both damaging to the people, and inferior to our own advanced and civilised customs. You will study Prince Zuko, so that you might save them. Now, off with you.”
Zuko kowtowed to his grandfather, his shocked eyes hidden from view.
As he picked up the box of scrolls, he hoped against all hope they were written in Fire tongue.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Less than a mile away, the flames in the great chamber of the grand palace which was the residence of the younger brother of Fire Lord Azulon and his descendants flicked up and down hypnotically as Prince Rozuku of Agni’s Light breathed weakly. He had been unconscious for days now, and all of the healers and sages were in agreement that the end was drawing near for the old prince. In all of that time his elder brother, Fire Lord Azulon had not seen fit to visit him.
His wife, the Lady Ji-Su of Keohso, Head of her House, had passed in her sleep earlier that week, and the sages had been anxious for Prince Rozuku to weigh in on who the headship of House Keohso should pass to, with both of the late Lady Keohso’s sons now being in their 50s. With the elder as a childless bachelor, well established as the Minister of Education, the sages and other officials alike were loath to lose him to a ruling position as Lord Keohso.
They were not to get his opinion however, for on that day, during the 72nd year of the reign of Azulon, Prince Rozuku of Agni’s Light, last surviving child of Prince Zhen and Princess Tsering, claimed son of Sozin, breathed his last, and all the fires in the great palaces of the Caldera went out in harmony.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unfortunately, the scrolls had not been written in Fire, but Northern Water, and as such Zuko was relegated to the library translating the lines of the scroll, one by one, seemingly neverendingly, using the dictionary scrolls. So engrossed was Zuko in his task, bestowed on him by the Fire Lord himself, that he did not notice the flames of the palace going out, only absentmindedly lighting a fire in one palm to help him to see.
Azulon noticed however. And Azulon knew. He had been holding yet another war council went the lamp at the end of the hall had gone out. His flames surrounding the throne and concealing him from onlookers flared as a litany of emotions overcame him, silencing his council in fear.
Azulon could not remember a life without his brother. Father had brought him to the palace when Azulon was very young after all. They may never have gotten along all too well, with Rozuku being raised by their zealously loyal nephew, who had been 20 years Azulon’s own elder, Ty Thura and his wife. But to have had a brother for almost 90 years, and then suddenly for that brother to be gone…it was jarring.
Azulon breathed out, burning away the tears in his eyes. Rozuku and he had never gotten along. But his brother deserved to be honoured.
“Lord Siso.”
“Yes, your Imperial Majesty”
Lord Siso, a great grandnephew of Azulon’s mother Fire Lady Dipali bowed.
“Fetch Lord Ha-Byeong of Keohso.”
“My Lord?”
The silly man kept forgetting his place. He may have been Azulon’s cousin, but there was no imperial blood running through his veins.
“My noble brother has passed away. I will be appointing Lord Ha-Byeong as Lord Keohso.”
“But your Imperial Majesty, forgive me, but is it not Lord Ha-Jun’s birthright to be Lord Keohso?”
Azulon’s nostrils flared and he blamed the emotional unrest caused by his brother’s passing for not later burning the man on the spot.
“Lord Ha-Jun is unmarried and has no children. He is better serving elsewhere. Bring his younger brother to me so I might make the appointment!”
Finally the upstart bowed, deeper this time than was usual for a man of his standing.
“Your Imperial Majesty” Lord Siso, and, hidden by his own fire, Azulon sank into his seat.
His brother was dead.

Chapter Text
Agna Qel'a, The Northern Water Tribe, 93 AC
In the height of the North the sight of a bird was rare enough, the sight of a red winged one, that was unheard of. And yet there it was, a stark contrast to the white of the sea ice and the blue of the ocean. A fire nation messenger hawk. Atuat had just finished her healing lessons for the day, and had been on her way home, but ran instead to her father, a warrior on the wall.
“Father! Father!”
Her father turned, concerned.
“What is it Atuat?”
Atuat went to answer him but a younger warrior burst in, ignoring her entirely.
“Warrior Aluq!”
Her father turned to him expectantly.
“Yes?”
“A messenger bird from the Fire Nation sir. One of our benders shot it down.” At this he presented father with an injured bird barely clinging to life. Atuat gasped in horror.
“Tarrlok! Do you not see my delicate daughter here! How dare you display that poor beast in her presence!”
“Miss Atuat. I apologise.” He stated quickly before turning back to her father and ripping something from the bird’s talon as it continued to bleed out.
“It is from the Fire Lord.”
“Then we must take it to the chief immediately.” At this her father turned back to her.
“Atuat, go to your mother, tell her I may be late this evening.”
“Yes father.”
Before her father and the younger warrior, Tarrlok, were able to run off Atuat spoke again.
“Father! May I try to heal the bird?”
The injured creature was quickly pushed into her hands.
“Do not feel bad if it dies. It is Fire Nation after all.”
At this the two warriors fled the room rapidly and Atuat fell to her knees trying to stabilise the poor bird. She could only do so much however, and quickly fled to seek aid, either from her Master, or from Katara, a young girl in her class who was truly blessed by the spirits. Atuat ran with the bird lax in her arms, as quick as the wind.

Palace of the Northern Water Tribe, Agna Qel'a, 93 AG
Chief Arnook was exhausted, if slighty happy. Ever since his daughter had been raised to the Northern Water Tribe’s first ever Crown Princess nearly 2 years ago, seemingly every meeting with his council had been a fight. Yue had taken her new lessons in stride bless her, but for the rest of council, other than Master Yagoda, her very status was an insult to the spirits, the ancestors and centuries of tradition. The neutralisation of the threat of the Fire Nation was the only thing that had stayed their hands from rebellion, of that Arnook was near certain.
Today’s particular brand of fighting was the ever present, “We are to be led by a woman! She will never understand how to fight, or how to lead her people in war!”. Arnook’s go to was (quite wisely he thought) not that she would be wed to a militant Fire Nation Prince who could surely assist her, but that she would be assisted in her rule by a grand council of warriors would she not?
The fight was going as well as could be went two warriors burst in.
“Forgive us my chief, councillors, Master Yagoda”
“What have you come for Warrior?”
“Chief Arnook. A letter from the Fire Lord.”
Arnook stared at the insultingly innocent looking letter with poorly concealed dread. Had the Fire Lord pulled out of the betrothal agreement? Was war on the horizon? Had Prince Zuko died, as children were so prone to?
Arnook was barely able to stop his hand from trembling as he took the letter. He broke the seal of the Fire Lord and unwravelled it with great care, reading the poorly written Northern Water carefully.
He did not recognise some of the words, but the gist was evident.
Fire Lord Azulon was thanking them, the Northern Water Tribe, for raising his grandson, Prince Lu Ten’s eldest daughter. He notified them of the arrival of Katara’s mother to the Fire Nation, where she, alongside Katara’s sister Hokulani, would reside with Prince Lu Ten. Lady Katara was no lady, no daughter of a Tribal Chief, but the daughter of a Fire Nation Prince. A Princess.
They had leverage.
Chief Arnook breathed a little easier when he next spoke.
“Pakku.”
“Chief”
“Fetch your ward. I have news for Princess Katara of the Fire Nation.”
And so you could hear a baleen drop.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Later
Katara had been living with Grandfather for a year now, ever since her GranGran had gone to the spirits. Despite spending a significant amount of time with Yue, who was the Crown Princess and heir to Chief Arnook, she had never set foot in the Great Hall of the Northern Water Tribe. Why would she? She was an 8 year old girl.
But grandfather had brought her there today, and Katara felt smaller than ever as she looked at all the men staring at her, picking her apart, searching her face and body for something.
“Princess Katara.” Chief Arnook spoke, and Katara looked at him in confusion.
“Chief?”
“You have our apologies for not addressing you properly Princess. Your grandfather, Fire Lord Azulon, has written to us to inform you of your Father and Mother’s arrival in the Fire Nation. And of the birth of your sister, Princess Hokulani of the Fire Nation.”
Katara was confused. From her limited memory, she had thought she had come from the South Pole, not the Fire Nation. That her father was a large man with a wolf tail.
But maybe she was confused. Maybe the warm man, Lulu, on whom’s ship she had travelled with Grangran, whom she had spent the better part of a year attached to his side. Perhaps he was her father.
Katara wasn’t sure she could remember.
Katara looked over to Master Yagoda, who had been Grangran’s friend. Grangran would have known, so surely Yagoda would too.
But Yagoda was silent.
“Master Pakku. I know you have enjoyed having your granddaughter with you, but I must insist Princess Katara be moved to the palace, to somewhere more befitting her station. You understand?”
Katara looked to her grandfather in horror but Master Pakku only bowed his head and aquiesced.
And so Katara’s life changed irrevocably. Now a daughter of a Fire Nation Prince, trapped in an icy prison.
Notes:
And that's why Tui had Yue kill Kanna.
Sucks for Katara.
Consort is the base line for a woman kept as a lover by a member of the Imperial Family. Men were kept as consorts by male members of the Imperial Family prior to same sex relations being banned. It is frowned upon for female members of the Imperial Family to keep consorts.
Chapter 35: The Air Nomad Genocide
Chapter Text
Southern Air Temple – The First Day of the Air Nomad Genocide
They had come at night. Under the cover of darkness, they had brought fire and blood and death to the Southern Air Temple. Mother Superior Jamyang (105) of the Western Air Temple had never seen anything akin to it in all her years. She had thought Sozin capable of much, but this…. this was beyond anything she could have anticipated.
She recalled less than a month prior, having her assistant Brugmo, now a Master Airbender at only 12 years of age, write a letter of condolence to the Fire Lord and his kin for the deaths of his grandchildren Princess Yazhu, Princess Azula, and Prince Kazuki. The young princesses and prince had been killed in a shipwreck off of the coast of Kyoshi Island as they made their way to Ba Sing Se, where Princess Yazhu had been set to wed Crown Prince Feishan of the Earth Kingdom. The match had been hailed as a great remedy to the growing tensions between the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation. Instead the bride and her siblings lay dead in La’s eternal clutches. The deaths of three of the seven children of the Crown couple of the Fire Nation had devasted their mother, who they were reliably informed had somehow managed to bend her way to safety and lay comatose in the Fire Nation Palace.
Crown Prince Zhihao, Crown Princess Pipaluk, Prince Zhen and Former Nun Tsering had not been seen since the wreck. They had thought the famously close-knit family to be isolated in mourning. Looking at the war raging outside her now, Jamyang was not convinced that they had not left this planet with their kin.
“Mother Superior!” Brugmo burst through the door with Namlang.
Jamyang had doomed them to death with her decision to visit the Avatar. If they had remained in the Southern Air Temple perhaps they would have lived. Surely Sozin could not have duplicated this attack elsewhere.
“…do?!” Oh dear. Jamyang’s mind had wandered and she had missed this.
She glanced out of the window and saw as a middle aged airbender was shot by a fireball. She watched as he fell the ground, burning. The children would not be able to escape.
“Mother Superior!” It was a young man at the door. He had been the one training with Air Ambassador Dargye in the Earth Kingdom until recently Jamyang recalled. At his side was a face Jamyang knew relatively well. She had met two of his predecessors after all. Avatar Aang.
“Mother Superior! The Council of Elders begs you to flee with the Avatar! You must protect him.”
Jamyang looked at her young ward Brugmo and saw as her shoulders fell and her face hardened. Resignation evident. It would be most sensible to take the Avatar and attempt to flee. Jamyang knew this. With only two of them, they would be lighter for the young Avatar’s spirit animal to carry them. And with her knowledge and age, when the soldiers fired at them, well, Jamyang knew the hidden tiers. The tiers only taught to the most spiritual and respected of airbenders. Those who knew absolute control and dedication to the spirits.
The tiers designed for killing. The tiers that had been banned by Avatar Roku 60 years ago.
Now, Jamyang was one of only a handful that knew them. One of only 3 currently residing in this temple.
But Jamyang couldn’t bring herself to. To abandon the children she loved to their deaths. It was an earthly attachment. It was illogical. It was a sin. And yet…
“Brugmo, Namlang, Monk, Avatar Aang.”
They fell silent, as outside the screams of burning and of death surrounded them.
“You will all follow me.”
And so Jamyang bended herself forward, feet never touching the floor.
The spirits must have been with them, for somehow they were found by only three soldiers, all of whom Jamyang was easily able to dispatch.
They mounted the Avatar’s saddled Air Bison in silence. Jamyang silently thanked the brave individuals who must have saddled the beast.
And then they flew. Near immediately fireballs set upon them.
“Brugmo! Sense your surroundings and direct the bison accordingly! Monk … you will assist me with Tier 36 – we will have it surround the bison!”
The young monk paled but his face hardened and he nodded in acquiescence.
And so they bent. They bent as they never had before. A vicious Air Vortex which transformed into an Air Sphere. The Air Bison bellowed in panic. It was not trained for this. None were these days.
They went on for hours upon hours upon hours, neither she nor the young monk willing to let up and risk what may be lingering outside their sphere. Brugmo was doing admirably, keeping up the strenuous task of sensing their surrounds outside of the sphere, despite the barrier, and directing them to the South pole, where Princess Hokulani and Prince Kenzo of the Fire Nation were known to be residing.
Eventually however, Jamyang’s age caught up to her, and her mind wandered, and the sphere collapsed, taking her with it.
She fell to the saddle, the young Avatar barely catching her with his wind cushion.
She could hardly keep her eyes open as the Avatar, Namlang and the Monk all huddled over her, Brugmo not distracted once from her task. The world around them was storm and thunder but they had to continue after all. Rain drenched them, and Jamyang had to strain herself to speak.
“Monk…tell me your name.”
“I am Tshering, Mother Superior.”
“Come closer.” He knelt close to her and she whispered in his ear all the secrets of bending she could, with little hope he would retain the information.
“You must care for the Avatar now Tshering. And the girls as well. Promise me.”
He hesitated little before promising. Jamyang closed her eyes, relieved.
Before she passed on, Jamyang heard one last word, screamed in excitement, by which one of the children she could not say.
“Dragon!”
And then the world faded to black and Jamyang was falling.
Chapter Text
Flashback - The Kai, 92 AG
When she had seen the black snow falling again, after all these years, Kya’s blood had grown as cold as ice and her heart had sunk. The Southern Raiders had come, every 10 years, like clockwork, ever since anyone could remember. Before the last Southern Bender had been captured their raids had been more frequent. Now it was once a decade that the South was forced to pay homage, or to burn. They came only to remind them of their place, Kya knew. The Fire Nation wanted for nothing that their scattered people could provide. They came just because they could. They killed her father in front of her, because they could. They had found a water bender in a neighbouring tribe a decade ago. Other talks or raids were merely myths, fearmongering, but Kya knew this one to be true. For in 82 AG they had walked the boy of 7 around in chains. Kya had seen him.
They must have heard of Katara. Of a little girl able to water bend. That was what she had thought. Then they had seen the singular ship flying not a black raven, but a flag of four. The Fire Nation came in peace. Kya had barely arrived at her friend Tica’s igloo in time to stop her from smothering her twin girls in their sleep. Tica had wailed in her arms when Kya told her that it did not seem to be a raid. The twins were none the wiser that their mother had almost spared them a fate worse than death. Kya did not think she would have had Tica’s strength.
Now she found herself on that ship. The war prize of the future Fire Lord. Her daughter saved from the sunless days of the Southern Water Tribe. She had left her only son, and the love of her life. To live in the heart of the enemy’s nation as a whore. The Prince may claim that he would respect her wishes. That he would not impose himself upon her where she slept. That he would not ask her to bear him children. But Kya had first hand experience of what Fire Nation men could do. She would never trust him.
Kya had not left the cabin she had been assigned since setting foot on the ship. The only thing that gave her the strength to continue with her decision was seeing little Hokulani grow ever stronger the farther from the South Pole they travelled. And they had travelled far. They were nearing the Fire Nation proper now, and still she had not taken up the Prince’s offer for her to join him for dinner. She wouldn’t have a choice for much longer. Even if it had not been the Princess who invited her this afternoon. Today or tomorrow, Kya had planned on finally saying yes. But her hand had finally been forced when, instead of an invitation from a Prince, this afternoon she had received an invite from his betrothed, the Princess Azula. The unnervingly severe Lady Ty had provided her with a briefing of the Fire Nation Imperial Family, and particularly the people she could never refuse, on the first day of their voyage. Other than the Fire Lord and Crown Prince themselves, the main individual highlighted as one she must obey was the young Princess set to be the Prince’s bride, Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. If Lady Ty had been unnerving, Princess Azula was a thousand times worse.
Kya had brought her younger daughter Hokulani with her to the dinner. She did not trust anyone on this ship not to smother her the moment they had the chance, particularly Princess Azula who was looking at Hokulani with a calculating and cold gaze. Ironic considering her fire coloured eyes.
“Thank you for joining me Noble Consort Kya”.
Lady Ty came close to Kya’s ear and translated the Princess’ words.
“It is my pleasure, Princess Azula.”
Kya expected Lady Ty to move over to Princess Azula to translate her words, but the noblewoman remained at Kya’s side.
“It is a pity that we have spent so long on this voyage, and yet you have yet to learn the civilised language of the Fire Nation. I am glad that you have at least, being doing your job properly and entertaining my cousin.”
Kya saw the moment that the young girl saw that the words had been translated, as Kya flushed red first in rage, then in embarrassment. She had nothing to be embarrassed about, of course, she would never betray her husband. But it was true that Prince Lu Ten had come to her room on a nightly basis. She had entertained him with cards and spending time with Hokulani.
“I will endeavour to learn Princess. Please, have patience with me. It is my honour to serve Prince Lu Ten.”
“It is. Don’t forget that savage. And don’t get any ideas about your daughter’s position. You may keep her. I am no murderer. But remember it shall be my son who sits the Dragon Throne. Not your half-breed girl.”
“I would never think otherwise Princess.” Kya bowed and grit her teeth. It was almost sad, she knew, to become so incensed at the words of a child. But something deep down in her raged at the girl’s words. Kya couldn’t help but think the world would be better off if Hokulani ruled the Fire Nation, rather than the spawn than this evil child.
She rose, and saw the little girl’s smile be almost warm as she looked at her, eyes cheerful. Kya at first wondered if she had perhaps judged the girl too hastily. Then she took a bit of the food in front of her, and Kya’s mouth burned. The Princess giggled. It would have been cute if Kya was not in so much pain. She breathed in deeply. The Princess was a child still. Perhaps she just needed a mother? Kya had not heard anyone talk of the mother of Princess Azula since she had boarded the ship, and it was Lady Ty that accompanied her, not her mother.
Kya’s heart softened as she looked into Azula’s warm gold eyes, and saw not a cruel Fire Nation princess, but an older version of Kya’s little Hokulani.
Kya had never met her own mother, for Ila of the Wolf Tribe, wife of Chief Atka of the Wolf Tribe, had died at her birth. Her grandmother had died before her birth, and of course her Grand Aunt Ila had been taken by a Fire Nation prince long before that. But the Wolf Tribe were a pack. And packs looked out for one another. Just as Tica’s mother had taken Kya as her own daughter, so Kya would take the young Princess Azula in. Kya would treat Azula as if she were her own flesh and blood.
Kya could fix her. No matter how long it would take, Kya would make the Princess melt.
Notes:
Hi. Wanted to get something about Kya's time on the ship in there, so we're jumping back in time for a sec. Once the fic is finished I might move :)
Also yes, Kya was her generation's Yue. Hakoda was a great warrior and was chosen to be the next chief, so was wed to Kya.
Chapter Text
93 AG: Main Imperial Palace, Wing of Prince Lu Ten
Lu Ten wasn’t quite sure how residing in the lap of luxury with two Consorts – neither of whom he was actually sleeping with – and an army of servants, was more stressful and confrontational than diplomatic relations with the Northern Water Tribe, but somehow it was.
If the High Sage had walked up to Lu Ten four years ago and had told him that by age 22 he’d be a father of two; betrothed to his cousin Azula; officially the lover of both Lady Myeong and a water tribe savage he’d have been shocked but not overly so. All of these things were perfectly understandable after all. But if anyone had told him that he’d be desperately longing to flee Caldera to treat with the Earth King, as he had already treated with both the Chief of the Northern Water Tribe and the High Chief of the Southern Water tribes, he’d have considered that individual rightfully insane. Yet here he was.
They had arrived in Caldera a few months prior, being greeted by a great procession of the most important nobles and Generals in the city. Both Azula and the Lady Kya had held themselves with pride, as Hokulani had giggled in her mother’s arms. Lu Ten had been surprised when they had told him Hokulani’s name, being that of the famous Fire Nation princess who the Southern Water tribe had murdered, but he supposed that perhaps it was simply a very popular name among the water tribes.
Grandfather had practically glowed when Hokulani had been introduced to him, particularly after she lit his beard aflame (panicking the entire room and almost causing her poor mother to faint) with a sneeze. In an exceptionally disturbing series of events, Grandfather had responded with a booming laugh. Lu Ten had thought his Aunt likely to faint in shock. No punishment was dished out to the babe, with Grandfather only exclaiming with pride that she lived up to her namesake.
Kya had not left her daughter’s side once since boarding the ship in the South Pole, completely understandably. Hokulani might have been right at the bottom of the line of succession, but as the only firebending child of a future Fire Lord, and a mixed race one at that, assassins were around every corner. Lu Ten was sometimes genuinely shocked that Azula hadn’t seen fit to get rid of both Kya and Hokulani. Instead, his cousin had been visiting the two water tribe every day, at seemingly random times and intervals. Lu Ten supposed the purpose was likely to keep them close, or nervous, or perhaps both. His servants kept him informed of the proceedings in his wing of the palace, where he now resided with Lady Kya, Hokulani and Lady Myeong.
Grandfather had discouraged him from visiting Kya’s chambers again, and as Lu Ten certainly did not trust that the Fire Lord did not have his own spies within Lu Ten’s staff, he had not dared go close, not even during the midday sun. He had visited Lady Myeong’s chambers at least twice a week since Grandfather had called him in for tea and had all but demanded he produce a babe with the prodigious fire bender.
Lu Ten had said that Azula may consider such an act a threat, and that he didn’t want to anger his betrothed. Azulon had said the little girl should be honoured to be Fire Lady, and welcome any children Myeong gave them.
Lu Ten had pointed out that having a potentially Firebending child from an Imperial Consort a decade older than any trueborn heir could pose the threat of a civil war. Azulon had simply stated that if that occurred then the Fire Nation would be richer for it, with the most powerful Fire Lord possible sitting the Dragon Throne.
Lu Ten had fallen silent and acquiesced.
Myeong did not want him, a fact she made quite evident. Lu Ten would not force himself on her. Instead they spent the evenings together staring in silence or sparing wildly. Spars with her were more invigorating than any sparing partner Lu Ten had had before. She was brilliant.
Myeong’s mother and sister in law had visited them infrequently since she had been living with him, preferring like the rest of their branch to keep to the former palace of Prince Rozuku, located on the outer edge of the Imperial Compound. Her mother had visited her the night prior, Lu Ten had tried to tune out the screaming match that had ensued.
But at least Myeong’s family visited her. Father had not visited them once, returning to the front lines soon after Lu Ten had returned from his Avatar hunt. Father had not seen fit to speak to him then. Nor had he sent any messages since. No one here could be trusted to know that though. It struck fear deep into Lu Ten’s bones to know that his father may no longer favour him. Kya could not know. Azula could not know. No one could know that his one main supporter had tossed him aside the moment he expressed his own agency.
The court was full of snakes, waiting to strike him when he was most weak. So far as anyone knew, so far as anyone must know, Lu Ten was the favoured grandson of Fire Lord Azulon, the chosen heir of Crown Prince Iroh, the one who had already continued the line of Sozin twice over, producing one imperial firebender, diluted though her blood was. They could not know the truth. They could not know Hokulani was not his daughter. They could not know that his father was not speaking to him. They certainly could not know that Lu Ten himself was doubting the righteousness of the war.
It had to be business as usual.
Lu Ten nodded to the soldier guarding Lady Myeong’s door. She opened it without knocking, for even an Imperial Consort was not a wife. She was Lu Ten’s property and was not to be afforded privacy, not when it came to him. After spending time in the Water tribes, such a fact now made Lu Ten’s stomach turn. The fact that this fact of life hadn’t disturbed him before his journey, upset him moreso. Grandfather kept numerous consorts. Fire Lady Illah had been one originally. A water tribe prize of war. The mother of father and Uncle. A woman so thoroughly broken he had never heard her speak before her death. A Fire Lady in name alone, never once leaving the Fire Lord’s palace, never once sitting at his side.
Grandfather had not rid himself of his other consorts when she was raised to Fire Lady, though at the time she had been the only one of them to bear him a child, Iroh. In time, the Fire Lord’s consorts had borne a handful more children. Then Prince Zhihao, son of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess had been born, hale and hearty and screaming.
Then those other children had screamed.
A couple, the youngest of the children, had been gifted to fervent nationalists. Set to be raised with no knowledge of their heritage, their names struck from all records, as if they had never existed. Only the Imperial family were kept informed of their names and identities, lest they ever present a threat. Those who were older, all aged between 4 and 20, were executed and their names wiped from all ledgers and records. Their deaths were quick of course, for the Fire Nation were not monsters. The main line could not be threatened, that was the reasoning for the slaughter. It was an unspoken atrocity, considered by all in the nation to be a necessity, the murder of nine children with the blood of Agni, ordered by the Fire Lord. The Noble Consorts who took offense to the death of their children joined them, and no one spoke against that either. For while they may have borne Imperial Firebenders, they were still the Fire Lords property. And no one cares when the Fire Lord kills his property.
Lu Ten was struck from his thoughts as a figure fell to her knees.
“My Prince” it was a coldly courteous line befitting a noblewoman of Lady Myeong’s standing.
“Lady Myeong. I wish to join you tonight.” He said before the door closed.
“As ever I am at your service.”
“Rise.” Lady Myeong looked up with her wide golden eyes, and her still rounded face. As every night, Lu Ten’s first thought was of how young she was, then how much she detested him, then that despite both those facts she was one of the most beautiful young women he had ever seen. She had turned 16 only recently, and Grandfather had thrown a feast in her honour, before expressing his wishes that she might soon bless the Fire Nation by extending the line of Sozin further.
Neither Lu Ten nor Myeong intended for that to happen.
“What do you wish to do tonight then?”
Myeong pursed her lips and sighed.
“As I said my Prince…” she sat on the bed. “Tonight I am at your service”.
Her robes began to fall away and Lu Ten’s eyes widened in shock.
Her voice said one thing, her eyes which promised a fiery death said another.
Lu Ten wished at that moment that the palace had more than one floor.
Notes:
Hiya, sorry for vanishing again. I've been busy, moved into a new place, got swamped by work and have possible been ever so slightly depressed.
94 AG, Quarters of Prince Lu Ten, Imperial Palace, Caldera
Lu Ten had been staring at the scroll for what seemed like hours. For the first time in almost a full year his father was trying to get in touch with him. And Lu Ten couldn’t bear to look.
A knock at the door.
“Enter.” Lu Ten said softly.
The door slid open and Myeong entered, bowing deeply.
“My Prince”
“Lady Myeong”
She walked over to him, with the posture of a woman sure of her status. In the past year they had grown closer, particularly lately, as grandfather became more and more impatient for him to produce a child with her. Myeong had recently been forbidden from contact with her close family, at least until she “did her duty”. As if she had a say in when she became pregnant.
Lu Ten had become more and more isolated in the court, the passive aggressive looks and his Uncle’s cold eyes tracking his every move. Myeong’s allyship only brought the loyalty of those who he was already related to. If she was his wife, perhaps things would be different, as she would be allowed to accompany him to events and leave the inner palace. But she was a consort, so she could not. Lu Ten had ears in the servants, for which he was grateful. Though sometimes he did wonder if it would be better not to know that so much of the court, and in particular the generals, still whispered about him. About his heritage. About the fact that at 23 he had yet to be blooded. Ignoring the fact that Ozai had never served either.
Azula was yet too young to buy him favour, not that he intended to wed her. And in her place, Aunt Ursa was useless at scoring favour on his behalf. She was almost as quiet and invisible as Fire Lady Illah had been.
Lu Ten placed his head in his hands as Myeong placed a hand on his shoulder.
“What is it” her voice was as cold as always.
“A letter from father.”
Behind him Myeong raised an eyebrow and looked down at the sealed scroll.
“I see. Are you going to open it.”
And while they had grown closer, they were not close enough that Lu Ten would tell her that he and his father were not on speaking terms.
“Of course. I merely hesitate, as it is so late, and reading any bad news at such a time won’t do well for my sleep.”
Myeong rolled a thumb along his neck and Lu Ten shuddered.
“If sleep is what you worry after, you know I will be happy to keep you company throughout the night.”
That Myeong could say something so salacious in such a cold tone never failed to bemuse him.
“You have the right of it, my lady.”
He broke the seal and uncurled the scroll. It was short. It was a summons.
Lu Ten was going to Ba Sing Se.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Next Day.
Myeong inspected her reddened skin with a detached curiosity. It was like this every morning after she lay with Lu Ten. After she rubbed herself raw in the evening to be rid of his touch. Perhaps if he hadn’t been the son of Azulon’s spawn. If she had a choice in this. If she had made time to get to know him before giving into her family’s pressure to lay with him it would be different. But it wasn’t.
Myeong was a liar. Pretending that she now cared for the cousin who had stolen what was rightfully hers when she still detested him. Brushing the side of his neck with care in the evenings and gripping the sheets in the heat of sex when really she wanted to ring his neck and scratch out his eyes until they could no longer look at her softly.
She wouldn’t have to worry about that any more at least. Lu Ten was going to the front. Myeong placed a hand on her soft stomach. She wasn’t secure. The moment he left, she, alongside Kya and the girl would be in danger. Perhaps Myeong less so. So far as Ozai was aware she was a pureblooded Imperial Consort. Yet unproven fertility wise, but still worth keeping around. Hokulani on the other had was a threat to Ozai. And she was still of an age where death was not uncommon. Kya wouldn’t survive the night. Everyone knew how Ozai liked to play with his pets.
Myeong breathed in deeply as a shrill laugh echoed through the halls of the inner palace. Azula. How Myeong hated to admit how they would be relying on that girl and Azulon for their safety. Her skin itched at the thought.
Myeong bowed as Lu Ten left the palace later that day. Blinked once, twice, as the great doors sealing them off from the main palace slammed shut.
So long as Azulon lived, they would be fine. And Agni knew that old man held onto life like an elbow leech.
They would be fine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Main Fire Nation Camp, Ba Sing Se
The great walls of Ba Sing Se stood impossingluy in the distance as Lu Ten finally approached his father’s camp, accompanied by 2 entire divisions. Travelling there had been beyond obnoxious, taking months and months. No one had written from home yet, though that wasn’t surprising, as communications to active divisions were rare at best.
Lu Ten didn’t know how he was to face his father. What he would say.
Then finally he entered the tent of the Dragon of the West, Crown Prince General Iroh.
And his father beamed in pride and gathered him in his arms with a clap on the back. And Lu Ten relaxed for all had been forgiven.
With his first orders as a real front line officer in hand, Lu Ten left his father, no, his General’s tent with an almost skip in his step. Only to halt with almost immediate effect as his eyes met amber eyes he’d spent years trying to forget.
Amber eyes’ voice was breathy in disbelief when he finally spoke.
“Lu Ten”
Lu Ten could have sworn he’d turned as white as the Northern snows when he replied.
“Min-Jun.”
Lu Ten was in trouble.
