Chapter 1: A Faraway Dream

Chapter Text

Hero let out a heavy sigh as his alarm blares loudly beside him. He reaches over and turns it off, getting up with a stretch. The star crystals were just starting to shine outside the window showing it was still early morning.

He yawns and gets changed into his normal clothes, a blue hoodie with some black slacks. It could get pretty cold in Snowdin after all! At least he wasn’t as bad as his brother Kel.

He wore a pumpkin orange sweater with a bright orange scarf on top of it. They normally wore the same black slacks as they were handed down to Kel from him after all.

Lost in thought he goes about his morning routine. He waves his hand over their grill making blue flames spark to life with magic as he carefully sets the pan down over it to warm the pan. He makes his way to the fridge seeing that they were down to their last four eggs. He’d have to stop by the store.

Taking the last of the eggs he gets to work on whisking up the eggs smiling fondly at a framed photo of his brother excitedly holding the flicker of a blue flame in his hands.

It was his brother’s dream to become a part of the royal guard. After all, his friend Aubrey was already the captain. The two would train together or well would try too. His brother was exactly magically inclined like the rest of them.

Aubrey wasn’t the best teacher either as he stopped by once and saw the two of them yelling at the top of their lungs. Apparently Aubrey had learned it from Kim as in her books that’s how they would power up.

Hero wasn’t too sure about that one. He didn’t say anything as he didn’t want to upset his brother but… He was worried. Kel could hardly manage a spark of magic.

It wasn’t normal. He had read that when the humans lived on the surface they didn’t have any magical properties. It was hard to believe. Magic was just an everyday thing for them now he couldn’t imagine life without it…

It was also hard to read the reason why magic was created in the first place. A weapon. A weapon against monsters. There was a war that happened above ground between monsters and humans… A bloody and cruel war that ends with thousands of humans being slaughtered. The remaining ones who lived were sent to live here. In the underground.

Hero slaps his cheek to get himself to focus huffing unhappily as he pours the eggs into the pan. There was no point in thinking about that now.

“Herooooo!” Comes the familiar draw of his sleepy brother stumbling his way down the stairs.

“Yes Kel?” Hero says with a little chuckle at how funny Kel could be when he was tired. Kel pauses for a few seconds and yawns softly.

“I had a dream.” He mutters. Hero hums softly to encourage him to go on as he focuses on stirring the eggs.

“We made it outside… There was this bright fireball that made everything bright! Trees that stretched out as far as I could see…” Kel sits down on the ground as he sleepily tries to remember his dream.

“Then there was this cool boat that could go on land! But it would go super super fast.”

Hero smiles softly at his brother's ranting as he really did enjoy hearing about Kel’s dreams.

“A ground boat huh?” Hero puts the eggs on a plate. He waves his hand over the flame and makes it flicker out before he gets both plates for them and gives it to Kel, sitting down across from him.

“Yeah! But like it would go really really fast.”

“You already said that part.” Kel pauses for a few seconds.

“I did…? Did I tell you about the giant buildings that reached up to the sky?” Kel asks curiously. This was his favorite part of his day. Hearing about Kel's dreams. Or even the adventures he’d go on with Aubrey.

Though he wanted to get above ground to see it himself he never wanted this to end.
