Chapter Text
It happened within seconds and Genos blamed his own slow reflexes that he fell into such a horrible situation. Blindfolded and his mouth gagged, along with his hands and legs cuffed by zip ties, Genos could only struggle uselessly on the floor.
The pair of burglars who trespassed into his house and ambushed him with pepper spray the moment he answered the doorbell must now be rummaging around, searching for valuable possessions.
Genos's eyes stung and his breathing sped up as adrenaline rushed in his body. He tried pulling at his arms but the zip ties only further bruised his wrists. Pissed off by his fruitless struggles, he regretted not upgrading his home security system or at least hiring a few bodyguards, as suggested by his godfather, Dr. Kuseno. It was not like he couldn't afford it. He should have anticipated something like this happening the moment he moved into such a grandeur-looking mansion alone.
Genos could only hope against hope that the burglars were only here for the money and nothing more. It would not do well if they decided to kidnap him and ransom his godfather instead. That would be detrimental for his cybernetic company's stock market.
All of a sudden, Genos was hoisted up the ground and the duct tape on his mouth was torn off carelessly by the assailant.
"What's the password? To the safe?" A man's voice was spoken roughly and Genos immediately realized that they must have found the secret safe hidden behind some picture frame in his study room.
Grimacing, Genos refused to reply. The cash and gold bars in the safe were negligible but there was an important pendrive with top-security information regarding the new robotic technology in it. It would be bad if that fell in the wrong hands or worse, if his business rival, Metal Knight were to acquire such knowledge.
A punch to his face broke his train of thought. The assailant roughened him up and tried again, "Tell me when I'm asking nicely."
Angered, Genos spat at what he assumed to be in the direction of the assailant's face and replied, "Over my dead body. You dare come into my house and assault me? The police will be here any minute now."
Genos was shocked when he heard the assailants laugh. "You talk big, kid. But we checked everywhere. No emergency alarm and you live alone. I wonder how long it will take for someone to notice you missing." Genos felt himself being pulled closer to the assailant and he could feel the hot breath of his as he spoke again, "Now tell me the code before I fucking rip your head off."
His blood ran cold. Deep down, Genos knew they were right. There was no escape from this and no help would come his way. He lived in this big mansion alone and he would die alone too at this rate. For a split second, he reflected on his life and he genuinely believed that no one would miss him even if he was dead, maybe Dr. Kuseno but he will move on soon enough. It wasn't like Genos had any blood-related family left behind.
Genos was aggressively thrown to the ground again and a hard kick was delivered right at his stomach. He doubled over and groaned in pain. Almost instantly, the assailant pulled his head up by the hair, causing Genos to scream out loud.
"The password. NOW." The assailant growled into his ears. But Genos wasn't having any of it. He would rather die than to give away his hard work. The technology could make this world a better place but when used inappropriately, it would be a lethal weapon.
"NO." Genos answered, with resolution.
"Very well then." The assailant dropped him on the ground again with a loud thud.
Then, as if the time had gone slow motion, Genos felt the blindfold being removed and as he adjusted to the lighting, he could see the assailant reaching for his gun. Eyes grew wide with fear, Genos braced himself for the shot.
"HEY! What are you doing?!"
It was at this moment time seemed to freeze completely for Genos as he looked up to the doorway to see the man who just spoke.
There was an ordinary-looking man who was oddly wearing an apron over his clothes. There was absolutely nothing notable about him except his bald head. There was a look of confusion on his face. In his arms were bags of groceries with a few leeks sticking out. Genos stared at him for a moment and then it clicked!
He had just hired a personal shopper for groceries a few days ago. They have never met before, not until today, and rather in an inconvenient situation too. Genos was about to shout out to him to leave, to save himself first but before he could, the assailant spoke up again.
"What the fu-?", before the assailant was rudely interrupted, as the bald man threw his bag of groceries and accurately hit him right on the head. The other assailant was frozen in shock and tried to recover as he reached for his gun but he was too late as the bald man had taken the steps towards him and flung the other grocery bag at his face. The assailant dropped heavily on the ground, like a total knockout.
The bald man turned to look at Genos and just then, time had returned to normal for Genos. He could feel the pain on his stomach, his wrists, his legs, his everywhere!
In an instant, the bald man crouched at his side to support him.
"Yo dude, you alright?" The bald man asked, Genos could hear the concern in his voice. Genos tried to answer him but once again, the bald man was faster. He was carefully placed to lean on the wall when the bald man spoke again, "Hang in there, buddy. I'mma call for help real quick!"
Genos had assumed he meant he would call the police and ambulance because it was obvious the imminent danger had already been taken care of and the assailants were currently lying on the floor of his living room, unconscious. But before Genos could let him go do that and before Genos knew he would pass out from the exhaustion and stress, he had to ask something!
"Please wait!" Genos shouted to the bald man as he was leaving.
"Huh?" The man turned his head to look at him again.
"Please tell me your name!"
"Oh. It's Saitama."
Notes:
I was on Youtube a lot recently, and there were those personal grocery shopper ads. The first thing that came to my mind was Saitama. This would be the perfect job for him.
And that was what inspired me to write this. I hope you guys like it!
Chapter Text
Genos found himself on a hospital bed the moment he opened his eyes. The bald ma-Saitama was nowhere to be seen but he noticed Dr. Kuseno was by his side, his expression filled with worry.
"Dr. Kuseno... How long have I been unconscious?", he asked, as he tried to sit up. He noticed the bruises on his wrists and legs have been treated, though he still felt discomfort in his abdomen area. The assailant must have kicked him harder than he recalled.
"Two days. Genos, my boy, you had me worried for two days. You should have listened to me when I asked you to hire some guards. It seems to me that you moving out in the first place was a bad idea.", Dr. Kuseno replied, his voice laced with disappointment.
But Genos didn't want that. He didn't want to stay with his adoptive father. He felt that he didn't belong there. No, it was not that he was abusive or neglected or any of that sort, no, he was treated with kindness and respect. But that only made Genos even more uncomfortable. He felt that he did not deserve such benevolence, the luxury of having a warm family again. And so, it was why he did his best to repay Dr. Kuseno's kindness. He excelled academically and learn the ropes in order to succeed in his place in the cybernetic company.
Genos was successful, for most of the part, he helped to expand the business empire. He discovered new advancing technology for automatic control devices in engineering, built great social connections in his career field, and pushed his company to be one of the top in the list.
Yet, Genos had failed in other areas. He had failed to be a filial son and caused distress to Dr. Kuseno.
"I...I'm sor-", Genos had wanted to apologize before he was interrupted when the doctor came in.
After some checkup, the doctor had deemed that he was good enough to check out in a couple of days. And by the time the doctor left, Genos felt awkward to make the apology.
Instead, he asked, "What happened to the burglars? And there was a kind gentleman who rescued me. I must thank him in person."
"You don't have to worry about the details, my child. Everything has been taken care of. As for the gentleman, I believe he had left after giving his statement.", Dr. Kuseno answered.
"Oh..Very well then.", Genos didn't know what to say or do next. He had wanted to repay the kind man. He felt that he didn't want to owe anyone any debt.
"Don't worry too much about it and get some rest for now. I have informed the office about your condition. You may resume your work when you feel well enough.", Dr. Kuseno said as he stood up and prepared to leave.
"But I am feeling better now and I can g-"
"Don't.", Dr. Kuseno sighed before he continued, "I only have this one son. Can you take pity on this old man and not make him worry so much?".
Genos hung his head in shame, before silently agreeing.
Dr. Kuseno gave him a small smile as he gently patted his head and quietly left the room.
The exchange had made Genos felt strange and warm, Genos liked it though he would never admit it out loud. His thoughts drifted towards the bald man, Saitama. Maybe he could find Saitama again if he searched for him through the online website for hiring grocery shoppers. Maybe then Genos could compensate him through monetary form.
That would be nice, to meet the kind gentleman again, Genos thought to himself as he slowly drifted off to sleep, with his last thought being a plain-looking man in a green apron with groceries in his hands.
It turned out that Genos's wish couldn't be fulfilled. A few days after being released from the hospital and Genos had fully recovered, he had tried to look for Saitama on the website but Saitama had been removed by the administration.
When Genos called to acquire further, they informed him that Saitama had been fired; thanks to the fact that he had damaged the groceries( but that was because he had tried to save Genos, in which Genos had tried to defend; and failed).
When Genos tried to ask for Saitama's personal information, they had refused him too(because of the law and regulation) and when Genos tried harassing them(with money), it was revealed that Saitama was just a part-timer and therefore, they didn't actually have any information on him other than his name.
Needless to say, Genos was infuriated by the injustice. Saitama was fired because of him, because he had tried to save Genos. It was ridiculous and the idea that he had caused Saitama to be jobless, made Genos felt guilty. Yet, there was nothing he could do. All he knew of the man was just his face and his name.
After some thought, Genos decided to let it go and hoped Saitama would find a better job after this. And that was the end of it. Or so, Genos thought.
About a week later, Genos had resumed his work in the office. It was late at night as he was on his way to the building to fetch some important documents that he had forgetfully left behind. The streets were empty, save for a few night shift workers who were on their way to work. Genos decided to park his sports car by the roadside and made a quick dash to the building. He would make a quick job of it, not that he had to though, since his vehicle wasn't blocking anyone.
And that was when it happened. Again.
Time started to slow down.
In Genos's defense, the car came out of nowhere and Genos was sleep-deprived. He didn't even have the thought to shield himself. Genos stood there frozen to the ground.
"Dude! Look out!"
Genos turned to look at the person who screamed at him and time stopped completely then. There he was again, Saitama. But this time, Saitama wasn't in an apron carrying grocery bags. He was in a uniform, to be exact, a security guard uniform with a black cap.
Saitama dived in and grabbed him by the shoulders. Genos could only watch as they both rolled on the ground while Saitama covered his head protectively in his arms. The car had drifted towards the ground Genos previously stood on and crashed onto the concrete bollards. Had Saitama been a second later, Genos seriously would not have survived this.
As the inertia stopped, Genos found himself on top of Saitama. Saitama's arm was still wrapped around his head. His gaze was fixated on the car. When he turned to look at Genos, he let go of him, and just like that, time had returned to normal again.
Genos quickly sat up to allow Saitama some room. Saitama stood up effortlessly, as if nothing dangerous whatsoever had happened. He looked at Genos and gave him a once-over before saying, "You okay, bro?"
Strangely, Genos felt a lump in his throat. He couldn't speak so he resorted to giving a curt nod. Satisfied with the answer, Saitama offered him a hand.
Genos took it but before he could speak to say his thanks, Saitama had let go of his hand and was already walking towards the car to inspect the driver inside. Genos decided to follow suit and he watched as Saitama opened the car door and began searching for a pulse. The driver, who was a middle-aged-looking lady, had a few scratches on her forehead, but otherwise, miraculously unscathed. The strong smell of alcohol from her and Genos deduced she must have driven under influence, hence the recklessness.
It was then he noticed the blood on Saitama's forearm. There was a long, deep cut along his arm and it looked severe. Yet, a glance at Saitama's face showed no hint of pain or discomfort.
He heard Saitama breathed a sigh of relief as he turned to Genos and said, "She's okay. Still breathing. Better call the ambulance now."
Then, Saitama suddenly grabbed Genos's hand. Genos was caught off guard but he immediately realized Saitama was staring at his watch to look at the time.
Saitama let out a shriek of surprise before letting go of his hand.
"I'm late to work! Er..you can handle this right? I gotta go now!", Saitama spoke rushingly and turned to leave but Genos grabbed hold of his hand.
"Y-Your arm." Genos stuttered out, confused why he felt this rush in his feelings. He interpreted that must still be the adrenaline pumping in his body.
"Huh? What?", Saitama asked, confused.
"Y-Your arm is bleeding. We need to treat that first."
"Huh? Oh!", it seemed Saitama just noticed his arm was bleeding and his sleeve was soaked with blood.
"Er..it should be fine. Just a cut.", Saitama replied as he tried to release himself off of Genos's hold.
But Genos only held on tighter.
"It's not just a cut! You need to get stitches for that, Saitama!", Genos exclaimed, voice raised with concern.
At that, Saitama immediately wriggled of his hold.
"How do you know my name?". Suspicion clear in his tone.
It was Genos's turn to be confused. "Huh? You don't remember me?"
"Do I know you?", Saitama answered him with a question.
Genos was shocked, to say the least, he had assumed Saitama would remember him. Saitama had saved his life once and he got fired because of it. For some reason, he felt a stung in his heart at the fact that Saitama had no recollection of him.
"You saved my life before, remember? At my house. There were two burglars. You knocked them out with your bags of groceries and you helped me called the police and the ambulance. But when I was awake, you were gon-"
"Oh, yeah! That kid! That was you?", Saitama cut him off of his long explanation. Genos had a suspicion that he only pretended or vaguely remembered but he didn't want to expose Saitama.
"Yes. My name is Genos. Genos Kuseno. I wish to meet you in person to express my gratitude. Will you care to tel-"
"Yeah, cool! I will see you around kid! I really gotta go now!", Saitama said as he ran and disappeared around a corner.
And just like that, Saitama had come and gone as quickly in his life, leaving Genos more frustrated than before. The only difference, Genos was more determined to find him this time.
Notes:
Saitama is a busy man lol
Chapter Text
A few days after the accident, Genos was dead set on looking for Saitama this time. But the past few days were exhausting. There were police reports to file and an anxious godfather to soothe. Thankfully, the lady driver was fine, a little out of it but otherwise, completely in good physical condition. She had profusely apologized to Genos the moment she was sober enough to realize her blunder. Later, she had thanked Genos instead when she realized that Genos wouldn't be charging against her.
Truthfully, Genos had no intention of suing her or anything of that sort. Instead, he knew deep down that he was a little grateful for the accident because it had allowed him to meet his savior again. Genos knew it was absurd and dumb of him to think that way but he couldn't help it.
Meeting Saitama seemed more difficult than dodging a bullet. In which he did literally dodged a bullet thanks to Saitama.
Yet, no matter how strong and brave Saitama was, he wasn't invincible. He still bled. Genos grimaced as he recalled the deep cut across Saitama's arm and how Saitama brushed it off casually. Genos felt horrible and his guilt bar had increased again. He had survived the entire ordeal without a single scratch but Saitama had suffered in his place.
Later, however, the guilt had switched to frustration and anger. He had gone searching for Saitama again with the clue that he must be working around the area as a security guard on the night shift. He had even resorted to hiring private detectives to look for Saitama.
To say that Genos was unhappy is an understatement. It turned out from the investigation that Saitama wasn't working full time, heck, he wasn't even a part-timer. Saitama was there as a replacement for a shift and he got the job from some posting online. Genos wondered how on earth this was supposed to be legal, for a person to not give their phone number or social security number. When the person Saitama was supposed to replace on that night was questioned, he only said it was a one-time thing and had paid Saitama on the spot.
All the trouble and Genos was back to square one. As he sat in his office, ruminating, Genos chuckled humorlessly to himself. Saitama was like Cinderella, he always had to disappear as the clock struck 12 or something. Or rather, Saitama was like a fairy godmother, his personal guardian, who will only appear when Genos was in danger.
As the investigation reached a dead end, Genos had no choice but to call it off. He hated to admit that he had given up but there was nothing else he could do. And so, for the next couple of weeks, Genos had returned to his normal life.
Genos had drowned himself with work, refusing to feed on the curiosity about Saitama. Still, his moodiness was apparent to his coworkers in the office. It was obvious that he was grumpy. He had more adamantly refused to eat out with his team during lunchbreak than before and instead, opted to lock himself in the office to do work alone. Therefore, for the last couple of days, Genos had been ordering delivery takeout to his office, refusing the company of others.
And that was when it happened, just when Genos had least expected it.
It was on a regular Wednesday and Genos had ordered fast food from a nearby shop. He was focusing intensely on his work when he heard a knock on his office's door.
Genos called out a quick "Come in!" before proceeding to turn his back towards the door to print out some documents. He then heard the soft click of the door opening and paid no mind to the delivery guy as he scanned over some files.
"You can just put the food on the coffee table. The tip's there too.", Genos said nonchalantly while taking out a stack of A4 papers from a drawer.
"Er..."
Annoyed, Genos let out a harsh "What?" but his back was still towards the delivery guy as he skimmed through the printed papers. And then,
"Ouch!", Genos silently cursed when he saw that he got a papercut on his index finger.
That was when the delivery guy spoke up again, "Er, you should probably put a bandaid on that, papercuts are the worst."
Genos heard some shuffling and a zip opening behind him as he grabbed himself a tissue to stop the bleeding.
"Ah here, I got a plaster for you. I'mma just put it here."
The delivery guy must have turned to leave because Genos heard the door opening again.
"Oh, I nearly forgot! I wanted to say sorry coz' the shop ran out of Coke. So they gave you Pepsi instead. Hope that's fine."
Genos turned to reply but the door was already closed. He sighed as he walked to the coffee table. Then, he noticed the tip was still there and a bandaid was put on top of it. Genos grabbed the bandaid and observed the cute green elephants and baby cacti on it.
His conscience reprimanded him for his rude behavior prior. Genos was burned out because of work and the lack of news about Saitama only worsen his mood. Now, he felt horrible for his lash out on an innocent delivery guy. Still, this delivery guy was nice enough to give him a bandaid. It was silly, really, no adult would use a childish-looking bandaid but Genos had felt better because of it.
Shifting his gaze back to the cash on the table, he wondered why didn't the delivery guy take the tip; was it because of the Coke and Pepsi thing?
His moral compass tipping over, Genos walked out of the office to call out to the delivery guy and that was when he saw it.
The bald head was unmistakable. It was clearly Saitama.
But he was already going into the elevator. Genos wanted to shout out to him; to ask him to stop but his voice died in his throat. Genos ran towards the elevator but it was too late, the door was closed and the elevator was heading down to the lobby.
Panicking, Genos immediately pressed the button for the other elevator but it was too slow. Instead, Genos opted for the stairs. He ran faster than he ever did in his entire life.
He would not miss this chance again.
There was no way he would let Saitama go again.
By the time he reached the door, he burst into the lobby. There were a few office workers surprised to see their CEO looking this disheveled. But Genos could care less.
He scanned around for a bald head. But Saitama was gone. Genos rushed out to the streets but there was no sight of Saitama anywhere.
And with this, it summed up the third time of Genos losing sight of Saitama.
Notes:
Lol, guess not.
But yeah...That's a good question, Pepsi or Coke. I'm more of a Root Beer person tho.
Chapter Text
At this point, Genos knew what to expect. When he called the shop looking for Saitama, they informed him that there was a delivery system algorithm and the app was in charge of sending out the food instead. And no, Saitama did not work for their shop so there was no way they would know his phone number or home address.
Rubbing his palms against his eyes, Genos groaned in frustration. Of course, he would be rude to the one person he wanted to be nice to.
Also, why didn't Genos recognize Saitama's voice? Because he was a dumbass, that's why. He knew the voice sounded familiar but had paid no attention to it. He had, on separate occasions, mistakenly thought he heard Saitama's voice. But the time it had really been Saitama, he had brushed it off.
Genos proceeded to knock his head on the coffee table. How can I be so careless? He must be insane to treat Saitama that way. He was supposed to express his gratitude, not be a jerk.
He leaned on the sofa as he thought back on the exchange. If Saitama had actually recognized him, he might have called out to him. But he did not. Did that mean Saitama didn't remember him again?
Or maybe Saitama did recognize him but was turned off by his lack of manners.
Ughh...he probably hates me now. Me, a selfish and ungrateful bastard.
Genos turned his attention back to the bandaid on the table. The only clue he had about Saitama was this bandaid. Genos took it in his hands and stared at the little elephants on it. Saitama must have liked cute stuff, Genos thought to himself.
No, of course Genos wouldn't use the bandaid. It was too important to be used just like that. The bandaid was like his lucky charm at this point.
But Genos had recalled Saitama telling him to treat his wound. Which was why Genos took another bandaid from the first aid box in the office and put it on his wound.
He stared at the normal brown bandaid on his finger, a silly smile plastered on his face.
Saitama cared. A deep cut meant nothing to him, but a papercut needs a bandaid.
Genos tried to follow Saitama's line of reasoning but it was silly really. Genos realized Saitama was the kind of person who would jump in to save the day but neglected his own safety at the same time.
A selfless person, yes, that is who Saitama is , Genos thought. Despite only meeting him three times, it was enough to deduce as much.
But with so many odd jobs, Saitama must have struggled financially.
He must have worked hard to survive.
Genos diverted his gaze towards the food Saitama had delivered to him. He would not let Saitama's effort go to waste and with that in mind, he digged in.
A few days had passed after the incident and Dr. Kuseno had made a remark on Genos's sudden vigor and seemingly brightened mood. Genos only smiled as he reached to feel the tiny bandaid in his pocket.
He had not given up on looking for Saitama but he was happy enough for now. For some reason, he was confident that they will meet again. Maybe not the way he wanted, maybe not at the right place, maybe not the right time either, but he was sure of it.
And Genos was right. It happened just a few days later.
It was a warm Saturday morning and Genos's day off. He took the opportunity to get some fresh air as he jogged around his neighborhood. Ever since the incident with the burglars, a home security system was installed and the overall security in the area had been tightened. There were even a few guards patrolling around.
Genos felt refreshed as he stretched and jogged around. He was enjoying his time so much, he nearly missed it. Almost immediately, Genos skidded to a stop. He took off his earphones as he turned around to confirm his suspicion.
Yes, Genos knew his eyes weren't playing tricks on him. There really was a dirty ball of fluff stuck on the metal fence.
Smirking to himself, Genos knelt before that black-furred kitten. It was kinda cute. Its big, bright, blue eyes stared directly at Genos as if saying, "What you looking at?! Help me get out of this!".
"Need some help there, little kitty?", Genos cooed at the kitten, as he reached out to twist the metal wiring in order to make the hole bigger for the kitty to fit through.
It hissed angrily at Genos, as if annoyed at Genos's condescending tone, but otherwise, did not try to scratch or fight back.
A couple of tweaks later, the kitten managed to squeeze itself out and was about to sprint away before Genos secured it in his arms.
"I knew I saw something silver on your neck.", Genos said as he inspected the kitten's neck, and true enough, there was a collar with a tag on it.
The kitten fought vigorously to escape but Genos wouldn't budge. He could make out a name on the tag and a few lines of address.
"Sonic huh? A funny name for a cat.", Genos muttered to himself while petting the kitten; although it was clear that Sonic wasn't enjoying it.
"Well, the place's not too far from here. Let's get you home, Sonic."
Sonic seemed to calm down a little as it heard the word 'home', making Genos wonder if the cat was trained or it was merely a coincidence.
It turned out that Sonic's home was a pet shop around the area. The moment Genos opened the door, he was greeted with the sight of animals roaming around freely. There were stacks of animal food and accessories on the shelves just like any normal pet shop. The only difference though, was there were no cages.
The bell on the door must have aroused the owner of Genos's presence because a moment later, a young man who was wearing an apron entered the room from another door at the back.
The man was of average height, with a lean built. He was rather good-looking but Genos couldn't see his eyes as his glasses reflected light.
"Oh hi. Welcome to Mumen's Pet Store. How can I help you?", the man asked.
Genos hold up Sonic in his arms and replied, "I found your cat around the area. I'm here to return it."
At that, the man seemed to light up.
"Thank you so much! We were searching for him everywhere. He always slips out like a ninja when we don't pay attention.", the man said as he walked towards Genos with his arms reached out to take Sonic.
He continued, "Where did you fi-?" before he was interrupted when the door at the back of the shop opened again.
"Yo, Mumen. Where did you put those shampo-?"
The back door opened to reveal Saitama, much to Genos's surprise. Saitama was wearing an apron on top of a hoodie and pants again, but it was different from the one he wore the first time Genos saw him. No, it was identical to the apron the other man was wearing instead, with the pet shop logo on it.
There was soap everywhere on his body and Genos deduced he must be bathing the pets.
When Saitama looked in his direction, his face brightened up.
"I've been looking for you everywhere!", Saitama exclaimed as he rushed towards Genos.
Genos's heart thumped faster at that as he softly whispered, more to himself than to Saitama, "You were?"
Saitama had his arms open wide and Genos was ready to hug him.
And that was when Sonic jumped from Genos's arms into Saitama's embrace.
Oh.
Notes:
I'm not even sorry, Genos.

Even as a cat, Sonic proves himself to be a strong competitor for Genos.

Chapter Text
Genos stood there dumbfoundedly, as he watched Sonic warmed up against Saitama's hold. Saitama was gently patting Sonic and talking quietly to it like it was a baby. He then started to inspect Sonic to see if there was any injury.
At that, Genos broke off of his trance. Of course, Saitama isn't talking to me. It was Sonic dammit!
Genos felt a sting as he watched Saitama giving his full attention to Sonic without batting an eye at Genos's direction even once. It's stupid, I'm not jealous of a cat.
But Genos had hoped. Deeply. That Saitama was also looking for him, just like he desperately did.
It was the man with glasses who broke the awkward moment as he spoke up again, "Saitama, it was this kind gentleman who brought Sonic home. His name is...", trailing off as he turned to look at Genos.
Genos immediately supplied, "Genos. My name is Genos Kuseno."
"Ah, I see. Mr. Kuseno.", the man greeted him with a nod.
"Please. Just Genos is fine." It had felt weird whenever people addressed him with his family name, especially when it wasn't his actual family name.
"Of course, Genos. My name is Satoru but most people go with Mumen, it's kinda my profession name. And this is Saitama, my assistant."
Saitama looked at him this time, actually looked at him, and said, "Yo. Thanks for bringing Sonic home."
Genos had anticipated for a day like this, with Saitama right in front of him. There were many things he wanted to say to Saitama when he finally meets him, many things he wanted to ask as well. But, when Saitama was standing right there, Genos's head went blank.
There was another round of awkward silence as Genos stared at Saitama intensely but this time, it was Saitama's turn to break it.
"So, er... Anyway, Sonic got a few scratches. I will fix it now.", Saitama said to the both of them as he turned and walked back into the backroom.
The door clicked shut and Genos seemed to be able to breathe again. But this time, he wasn't worried. Saitama would not ghost him this time, he had found an actual location, with a name. There was no way he would lose track of him for the fourth time.
Genos turned to Mumen and started the round of questions he had prepared. "Mumen, how long have Saitama been working here? He's not a part-timer again, is he? I need his phone number and his home address, if possible. So, Sonic is his pet? But why did he-?"
"Woah woah. Stop right there. Erm, Genos. It was nice of you to bring Sonic here but we are not comfortable sharing the private information of our staff. If you have no other business here, we will have to ask you to leave."
Genos wouldn't want that. He might not meet Saitama again if he missed this chance. He will have to tread carefully and not be a total creep this time. Putting on his businessman-smile, he proceeded,
"Ah, my apologies. I might have come across as rude. Here is my name card.", Genos procured a card from his wallet and handed it to Mumen before continuing, "You see, Saitama had saved my life a couple of times before. I was just feeling a little overwhelmed to meet him again. I did not expect to bump into him here, of all places."
"Oh.", Mumen was deep in thought for a moment before continuing, "Are you by chance that kid who got involved in an accident in City A two weeks ago?"
"Yes! Did Saitama tell you about me?", hope filled Genos's heart. He had assumed Saitama had forgotten him again, but if he did tell Mumen about the accident, maybe he did remember a little.
"Ah yes. He said he pushed a bystander out of the way but he didn't exactly elaborate. Saitama is a man of few words, you see. He only told me about it when I helped stitched up his arm."
So he did get hurt. I told him he needed stitches!
"Was the wound bad? Why didn't he go to a hospital?", Genos inquired, his anxiety and guilt rising.
"The cut was deep but Saitama said it's fine. He wouldn't be able to afford to go to the hospital, Genos.", Mumen said as he scratched his head awkwardly, clearly uncomfortable to speak on Saitama's financial condition.
Genos was beyond infuriated. "So he went to a vet instead? No offense to you Mumen, but a vet is clearly different to a certified doctor."
"None taken. You're right actually. I'm not exactly qualified either. I'm still just a vet trainee.", Mumen said, his voice getting softer and softer as he spoke.
"What."
"Saitama did say it was healing.", Mumen supplied helplessly.
Genos sighed heavily. This will not do.
"I should take him to the hospital for a check-up, just to be safe."
"Y-You're right. Saitama's at the backroom right there."
He thanked Mumen and proceeded to the door at the back of the shop. He was ready to reprimand Saitama for his carelessness. A papercut was the worst, a few scratches on a cat must be treated immediately, but a deep cut wasn't a big deal. He was really doubting Saitama's way of judging wounds.
He opened the door and opened his mouth to speak his mind when he saw the view in front of him. There Saitama was, sitting on the ground with Sonic in between his legs, a box of first-aid opened beside him.
There was a small, gentle smile on Saitama's face. It was subtle, almost unnoticeable, but it was there. In his hands, he was offering treats to Sonic who gobbled on eagerly.
Then, all of a sudden, Saitama looked up as if noticing Genos's presence. Their eyes met and it clicked.
Genos had a moment of clarification and understood something. He had assumed the illusion of time slowing down and stopping completely was due to the adrenaline rush when he was in danger. Yet, here he was, in the backroom of a pet shop, with no danger in sight, but time had come to slow down and stopped completely.
Saitama blinked and the moment was over again.
"You need something?", Saitama asked, his expression back to neutral.
Genos cleared his throat and tried, "How's Sonic?", it wasn't what he wanted to say but this would do, for now.
"Ah, he's fine. Just a little dirty and hungry."
At that, Sonic hissed as if offended. He strutted away somewhere, probably looking for Mumen for more snacks.
Genos didn't know what else to say so he asked again, "How long had he been missing?"
"Almost a week? Flashy missed him a lot."
"Flashy?", Genos questioned, curious.
"Oh here, lemme show you.", Saitama walked to a corner and grabbed a white-furred cat to show Genos.
"This is Flashy Flash, he's Sonic's brother. He runs super fast.", Saitama said as he fed another treat to Flashy.
Genos failed to see how Sonic and Flash could possibly be related. They were clearly of different breed but Genos did not question Saitama on that.
Instead, Genos gathered up his courage to ask Saitama the one question that mattered.
"Saitama, do you remember me?"
"Yeah, of course. You just introduced yourself. Ge..." Saitama paused for a moment and it occurred to Genos that Saitama really had terrible memory.
"So yeah." Saitama ended that way instead.
"Genos. My name is Genos Kuseno." Genos heavily emphasized his name as he prolonged his intonation.
"But we have met before that. Do you remember the car accident? The wound on your forearm?", Genos tried harder.
Saitama's eyes grew wide like he finally recalled. "Oh yeah! The blond kid!"
It wasn't exactly a flattering nickname but at the very least, Saitama was right.
"Yes. That was me. Mumen told me about your injury. How is it healing? You should have gone to the hospital. I will offer you monetary compensation."
But Saitama was already turning away, scooping up dog biscuits into a bowl to offer to the pets.
"You don't need to do that. It's healed completely.", Saitama said as he watched a couple of dogs rushed towards him for the meal.
Genos didn't know what to reply. Saitama's answer seemed final and resolute. So, he asked for the next thing he wanted the most.
"Then, can I have your number?"

Saitama did turn to look at Genos this time. "Huh?"
"Your number. I need that."
"What for?"
Caught off guard, Genos didn't expect Saitama to question him like this.
So, he rushed out a reason, "You saved my life. If you need any help, you can reach to me. That's the least I can do to repay you."
Disinterested, Saitama went back to attending to the dogs. "And I said you don't need to do that. It was my job. I worked as a guard that night, I think."
"I'm afraid that I have to insist. I feel uncomfortable owing you a favor." More than a favor actually, but Saitama doesn't remember that.
Saitama scratched his chin, as if in thought, then he hit his fist on his palm, as if he thought of a genius solution.
"You can treat me."
"Treat you?"
"Yeah, I will go shopping after this. You can buy me my groceries. Then we will be even."
Again, Genos failed to see how saving a person's life would be equivalent to buying groceries. But he didn't mind it so he agreed.
He waited for Saitama to get off work and accompanied him on his way to the nearby supermarket.
There were thousands of questions he wanted to ask Saitama but he went for the most basic ones first.
"So, do you live nearby, Saitama? With your family?", Genos asked, but he oddly felt uncomfortable, the possibility of Saitama having a wife and children. It felt weird, he didn't want to think too deeply about it. Not that he needed to though, because Saitama answered him.
"I live in City Z alone."
"Oh, I assumed you would have. You looked mature, you know, with your bald head."
Saitama got triggered at that remark. "So I'm bald! What's your problem?!"
"But that would mean you're bald despite being so young.", Genos muttered to himself.
"How old are you, Saitama?"
"I'm 25! Don't I look like it?!", Saitama shouted, fuming.
"Ah I see, you are 4 years my senior, Saitama-san."
"Just call me Saitama!", Saitama sighed, his anger subsided as quickly as it came.
They entered the store as Saitama went ahead to grab a leaflet while Genos went to fetch a trolley.
"They have cabbage and salmon on sale today." Saitama said to no one in particular as he browsed the leaflet but Genos overheard.
Genos followed Saitama around in the store as he looked for discounted food. Genos didn't understand, he rarely visited a store, most of the groceries and cooking were done by the housemaids. The only times he needed to, was just to buy a snack or a drink.
So, he was confused when he noticed Saitama grabbing the more expensive box of biscuits than the other ones. He assumed it might be because Genos was paying. But Saitama had turned to him to whisper to him, as if letting him know a top-secret, "Let me teach you this. You see, this store thinks they are so smart to cheat the customers but look at the volume and price ratio. And add in the voucher, we could save 20% more when we buy two packs."
Then, Saitama proceeded to show Genos the leaflet. "You see, we get a free gift if we buy four. A free container.", excitement clear in his voice.
Genos smirked at his enthusiasm. "You really like grocery shopping that much, Saitama?"
"It's not like I like it a lot. But it feels great getting a good sale, and you can save up a lot.", Saitama answered as he inspected the expiry dates.
As they walked down the aisle, Saitama spotted something else.
"There's a buy one free one promotion on tissue papers. Let's go!"
"You are very good at this, Saitama. Maybe I should address you as a sensei for your expertise.", Genos said it, half meant as a joke but Saitama smiled that tiny smile.
"Don't. It's creepy.", Saitama replied, but there was no heat in it. "Let's grab the ice cream last tho. We don't want it to melt."
"Yes, sensei!"
After paying for the groceries, they headed out of the store and Genos was about to excuse himself to leave since he did manage to procure Saitama's number in the middle of shopping when Saitama called out to him.
"Huh? You're leaving?", Saitama asked.
Confused, Genos replied, "Should I not be leaving?"
"I bought with your share in mind. I thought we are having lunch together."
"We are?"
"Well, you did pay for them. It's only fair."
Genos was about to argue that the grocery was supposed to be compensation but Saitama already started walking, so he opted to follow along and grabbed a bag of groceries from Saitama's hand to help him.
It would be better too, to follow Saitama home instead of asking Mumen or stalking Saitama. He was curious enough to know where Saitama lived, how he lived. He did say he lived alone but what about his parents?
As they walked into City Z, Genos began noticing how run down the buildings were. It was totally different from his usual City A. It must be a rather poor neighborhood. It was quieter here too, almost as if it was deserted.
"There aren't many people living here, are they?", Genos asked as they turned a corner into an apartment building, not much different from the ones Genos saw before.
"Not sure. There's no one living in this building but me tho.", Saitama answered as they walked up the stairs.
"Ah but Mumen lives around. Just further away. At the outskirts.", Saitama continued when they reached his place.
He unlocked the door and as Genos entered, another thought dawned on him.
It reminded him just how vastly different they are. It wasn't exactly a house, more like a room. At the entrance, Genos could already see every corner of the place.
There was a television at a corner, a small cupboard filled up with comic books, a rolled-up futon against a wall, and a low table in the middle of the room. And that was it. Oh, and there were the bathroom and kitchen he passed by as he walked in but that really was it.
It was weird, Genos's bathroom was bigger than this.
"Make yourself at home. Have a sit. Er, anywhere.", Saitama said as he himself entered the kitchen to prepare for lunch.
Genos immediately offered to help, though it wasn't like he knew how to cook. But Saitama had turned him down, saying the kitchen was too small for both of them anyway. So, Genos could only watch through the window between the kitchen and living room as Saitama cooked up a quick lunch.
It looked deceptively easy, and Genos was almost confident he could easily learn it if he wanted to.
"You are very good at this, sensei.", Genos said, oblivious of a smile forming on his own face.
"Shut up, brat.", Saitama muttered but otherwise, focused on his task.
It didn't take long and they were both sitting at the low table with a few simple dishes sprawled out in between them. Saying a quick thanks, Genos digged in.
Genos was right. The food really was deceptive. It looked simple enough but it had tasted better than most 5-stars restaurants he had been to. When he told Saitama about it though, the compliment was brushed off indifferently.
"You must be super rich to get to go to those 5-stars places.", Saitama said, in between bites.
"I do okay."
"That's exactly what rich people say!"
Genos kept quiet before continuing, "It's not my money anyway."
"Huh? Why not?"
It wasn't like Saitama wasn't a trustworthy person and Genos oddly felt safe around him; Genos was at ease to tell him his story.
"I'm adopted."
Saitama paused his eating. His attention was fully on Genos, likely aware that the topic was heavy.
"Oh, er...you-"
"Me? You'll listen to my problems?"
"No actually, thanks, I'm good. You should keep your pri-"
"Actually, six years ago, when I was 15, I still had my own family. Although we had to pinch pennies, my family and I lived a peaceful and fairly happy life. But one day, a wildfire broke out in the woods nearby, it had spread fast and there wasn't enough time for evacuation. The entire town was destroyed. It was most likely due to global warming. It destroyed everything in sight. The park, my school, my house, it even took my family's lives. Miraculously, I survived, but being only a weak 15-year-old, I was alone and at the end of my strength in a small, ruined town. That was when Dr. Kuseno happened to pass through. Dr. Kuseno, a scientist for justice, was on a mission to help and recover the destruction caused by natural disasters. He had taken pity of me and legally adopted me as his son. And that's how I was reborn as a privileged, well-off person. In return, I promised Dr. Kuseno that one day I would repay his kindness by doing good to the world."
"I see-"
"It's been six years since that day. I'm now 21 and I've been wandering from city to city to reach out to the poor and suffering from adversity. The number of charities and fundraising events I've made are too many to count. But I find myself unable to move on from the wildfire incident and have become increasingly restless. I find myself chasing the idea that the world could be picture-perfect, void of pain and calamity. Then, weeks ago, when you saved me from the car accident, I realized just how I have taken my life for granted. If you hadn't been there, I would have undoubtedly been dead. I was convinced I could change the world with money alone but I neglected on the importance of taking action. You didn't just save my life, you have changed my mindset. My life that was once saved by Dr. Kuseno has now been saved again by you, Saitama. I feel the weight of that responsibility. I must not die before truly giving back to society. And to do that, I must continue my aid. I need to get stronger mentally. Last week, when I saw your bravery and selflessness, I knew I had to study from you. If only I could be as strong as you, Saitama! I have a mission to accomplish and the battle is not for me only. It's for my hometown and for Dr. Kuseno too. I realized I am still inexperienced. But right now, I need your guidance so I can make the world a better place! Dr. Kuseno is-!"
"Enough, you idiot! Shorten it to 20 words or less!", Saitama scolded him, cutting off his explanation.
Saitama took a deep breath, his tone slightly calmer, "You don't have to tell me your entire story. Keep your personal information private."
A little taken aback, Genos replied with a short "Yes."
They went back to eating quietly and Genos assumed that was the end of the conversation when Saitama said something again.
"I'm an orphan."
It was Genos's turn to look at him.
Saitama said it in between bites, "You like words so much, you must have heard that phrase. Something about to have loved and never loved."
"It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all."
"Yeah, that."
Genos has stopped eating. He felt foolish and ignorant to have said all that to Saitama, yet Saitama didn't seem to mind, well, except for shortening his speech.
"I don't know how that feels like but it must have been hard for you.", Saitama mumbled, his eyes looking everywhere except at Genos's face. Is this Saitama's way of comforting someone?
"It's good that you have a goal, Genos...I think it's cool."
And that was the end of it. Saitama seemed intent on finishing his lunch. So, Genos followed suit too.
He did feel a little happy that Saitama had trusted him enough to tell him his story, albeit in much lesser words. And Saitama had praised him, which had made Genos's stomach feel weird. It felt like some moths were flying in it.
The feeling wasn't unpleasant.

Chapter Text
Genos had kept in contact with Saitama for the next couple of months, although mostly just texting. It was funny but it certainly seemed that a part-timer with various odd jobs was busier than an actual CEO of a company.
When Genos asked Mumen about the odd jobs, Mumen had told him that Saitama had used his earnings to keep the pet store going. It turned out that the shop took in more strays than they could afford. The profit from the store wasn't much in the first place, so things were tough.
It had surprised Genos when Mumen refused his money to sponsor them. Mumen had countered that it wasn't right to take his donations without giving back anything.
That had resulted in Genos volunteering on weekends in the pet store.
"You know, you really don't have to come over to help.", Saitama spoke up to him in the middle of bathing a golden retriever. Saitama had given that large dog a pretty cool name, King.
King, had three lines of scar over one of his eyes. When asked about it, Saitama told him that King was attacked by some feral wolves. And had viciously survived after beating the wolves up. But after saying that, Mumen and Saitama shared eye contact and smirked, as if they shared a silly inside joke. Needless to say, Genos was unconvinced.
"Mumen and I can handle this.", Saitama continued as he began to rinse King.
"I want to. It's fun to be here.", Genos replied. And he meant it from the bottom of his heart. It was fun to play with small animals, it was relaxing compared to working in the office and doing business negotiation. And most importantly, he got to see Saitama smiling that tiny smile. It was rare and far in between. The sort of thing that when you blink, you'd miss it. But when Genos did witness it, some feeling of warmth spread across his chest. And he liked that.
The only downside though, was that stupid cat, Sonic. He loved to hog up all of Saitama's attention with his silly antics, like bringing in a dead mouse for Saitama, like it was some treasure. Dead mice are not some cool things to woo Saitama.
And when Saitama did pay him attention, Sonic acted all arrogant like it was natural for Saitama to coddle him.
Yet, Genos couldn't do anything about it. It wasn't like he would want to do anything to Sonic because as much as he hated to admit it, Sonic was the one with the highest probability to make Saitama make that tiny smile.
That was true, he had recorded, calculated, tabulated, and plotted his observations. The final statistics revealed Sonic to be in the first place, followed by Mumen and the third, King. Genos had come in as a strong fourth in the ranking. He was nowhere near satisfied with the results. But for now, Genos took pride in the fact that he did rank above Flashy Flash.
Still, Genos felt happy. Happier than he remembered what happy felt like.
When the weekdays arrived though, Genos had to put up a mask and worked in the office as a CEO should. It was stressful and at times, felt unrewarding but it was his job. He needed to make the money to achieve his goal. That is the way of today's society. You need the money, power, and fame in order to have a say. Sure, he could be like Saitama but working at such a small scale would take decades or even centuries to show any significant results. And so, to beat the system, he played by the rules. Though that didn't mean he had to like them.
It was in the middle of the day when Genos decided to take a lunch break. When he turned on his phone to check for notifications, he saw a message from Mumen who sent it to a group chat, consisting of Saitama, Mumen, and Genos himself.
He opened the message to see,
Mumen: The local report said there will be a heatwave coming this couple of weeks...
Genos scrolled down the message to see Mumen proceeded to give long-winded tips and safety precautions regarding the phenomenon. Below his message, Genos read Saitama's response,
Saitama: Ok
Genos smiled at the short, precise answer. Saitama, ever the man with few words.
Genos then made his way out of the office as he turned off his phone again after replying a thank you for Mumen's concern. He made his way down the lobby and onto the streets searching for a meal.
When Saitama heard that he often took takeouts, he had scolded Genos about it. Saitama had mentioned that he worked in that field and the way some shops handled food was terrible. It was comical then, that Saitama who spoke few words had nagged him for eating unhealthily and when Mumen got wind of that, Mumen joined in too. Recalling the conversation, Genos concluded that Saitama probably didn't remember their third encounter in the office either.
As his thoughts drifted to Saitama, Genos wondered what Saitama be doing on a hot day like this. He hoped he hadn't taken any strenuous work. Genos turned a corner to a family restaurant when he saw it.
There was a walking mascot in the middle of the streets between the shops. It was dressed in white fur, its head resembling a dog, with a tail in between the legs. Genos saw the large tag taped on its body, reading, Watchdog Man. It seemed to be promoting a newly opened game store just two blocks away.
Genos took pity on the person in the mascot, whoever it was must be suffering from serious heat. Genos was in his sleeveless vest and he was already sweating like a sauna. The person who thought of this idea must be pure evil.
As Genos walked past the mascot, it had offered him a leaflet.
Genos accepted it as he continued walking when it spoke, "Please have a visit to our store!", and Genos froze.
Three months ago, Genos would have made the mistake of not recognizing that voice. And back then, he had hated himself for not being able to do so.
But there was no mistaking it this time. So, he walked back to the mascot and asked, "Saitama?"
"Huh?", came the reply.
Losing his patience, Genos straight up took off the mascot's head and he immediately hated the sight.
Saitama was in there, sweating and red-faced but his lips looked abnormally pale. There was shock in his expression due to Genos's sudden movement but he recovered quickly and asked, "Genos? What are you doing here?"
Genos's heart twisted painfully at the sight but he didn't exactly know why. Instead, he scolded, "I should be asking you that, Saitama! What are you doing here on the streets?"
Confusion on his face, Saitama held up the stack of leaflets as if it was obvious. "Er, handing these out?"
Frustrated, Genos went on, "There's a heatwave going on. Do you want to get a heatstroke?". Genos hadn't meant to sound so angry, he would never raise his voice against Saitama like this, but this time was different; Saitama had crossed a new line.
"I'm fine, dude. It's okay. Plus, I get paid double for today's work. It's a steal!"
"What steal?! You're gonna get sick from this!", Genos's voice growing louder as he continued.
But Saitama had turned annoyed at his outburst as he took back the head of the mascot from Genos's hands.
"I already said I'm fine. It's my body, I know I can handle some heatwave.", Saitama was already turning to leave and Genos was about to speak up again when Saitama added, "Don't follow me, I have a job to do!"
Saitama then proceeded to walk in the opposite direction and turned to another street. He put his mascot's head on as Genos watched him disappeared at another intersection.
At another timing, Genos would have thought Saitama in a mascot as cute, he would have taken a few snapshots. But no, Genos was infuriated.
Fine, yeah fine. Like hell he would be fine!
Genos stormed back to his office building, foregoing his lunch.
If someone can survive some heatwave, I can survive missing a meal!
It was petty and Genos knew it. Saitama probably was still roaming the streets below him, passing out stupid leaflets to people who would reluctantly take them and threw them two seconds later anyway!
Genos continued his work in a sour mood for the rest of the evening.
When it was time off work, Genos packed his stuff crankily and finally took notice of the piece of leaflet. He grabbed the paper and scanned its content, searching for the address. Genos reminded himself, he just wanted to check out the store. He wasn't there to look for Saitama.
It was a weak lie, Genos was never the type to play video games, but he went with it anyway.
As he neared the store, he tried to hide behind some pole, which was ridiculous; but he did it anyway.
That was when he saw Saitama sitting on the pavement at the back alley. He had already taken off his mascot and wearing a loose T-shirt and short pants. There was a lunch box in his lap, but instead of eating it, he was feeding his sandwiches to a stray cat.
The scene made Genos feel something, in his chest. It had happened often ever since getting to know Saitama, but it was getting worse. Genos couldn't identify what it was; he didn't know yet if it was a good or a bad thing. He just knew it wouldn't be going away anytime soon.
Genos walked out of his poor hiding spot to meet Saitama. He didn't know what to say but that didn't stop him from approaching Saitama.
Saitama didn't notice him at first, his eyes focused on the brown cat. But when the cat looked up towards Genos, Saitama followed its gaze.
Saitama's eyes widened a fraction before turning away, as if uncomfortable. Genos didn't know what to do either. Instead, both of them stared at the cat as it finished off Saitama's dinner.
By the time it had licked clean off the lunchbox, the cat cooed at Saitama's leg as if saying thanks before strutting away.
Genos felt self-conscious all of a sudden when it was just the two of them alone. The sun was setting and it was getting darker. But Genos didn't want to leave.
He knew he should apologize for his lash out but he didn't want to. He didn't regret it and he would do it again if he had to. But he didn't want Saitama to stay mad at him either.
Genos opened his mouth to try to say something but he didn't have to because Saitama was a step ahead of him.
"I know a new udon place around here. You hungry?", he asked as he stood up with his back facing Genos.
"Yeah...Starving.", Genos replied, surprised to see Saitama taking the first step for reconciliation.
"Good. Coz' you treating.", Saitama said and at that, he turned to give a smile. It was quick and by the time Genos registered it, he was already walking ahead.
But Genos stood there, dazed. That smile was new. No, it wasn't the usual, tiny ones Genos adored. He had never seen this one before.
It looked...pretty.
It didn't make sense to call a man's smile pretty. But it really was. There was a little playfulness behind it but Genos knew it was genuine.
"What's the matter? You don't like udon?", Saitama called out to him and Genos rushed to meet him ahead. As they walked on, Genos made sure to catalog that smile in his head. In his mind, he had victoriously placed himself first in ranking for making this smile.
Notes:
Who cares about S-Rankings now? I care for making Saitama smile more.
-Genos, probably.
Chapter Text
Saitama, as Genos noticed, must have learned his lesson. He had stopped working that mascot job the next day. Genos was smug for the rest of the week as he assumed it was because of him, Saitama had quit.
However, Genos learned the truth about it on the weekend when he volunteered at the store. Apparently, it was the combined effort of Mumen and Sonic for Saitama decided to resign. Mumen only knew when he saw the mascot Saitama carried home with him; hence beginning Mumen's persistent berating. As for Sonic, it was silly. He had disliked the smell of Watchdog Man, the mascot, and had refused to even let Saitama pet him. That had been the last straw for Saitama.
Genos childishly hoped that he was the trigger and that stupid cat Sonic only played a minor role. But it didn't really matter now. As long as Saitama didn't overwork himself, Genos didn't mind sharing the credit with that dumb cat.
But Genos seemed to be relieved a little too soon, because on the next Saturday he went to the store, Saitama was nowhere to be found.
"Mumen, where's Saitama?", Genos asked, as they piled up the stack of pet food in the storeroom. Saitama had, on a few occasions, overslept and came in late so it wouldn't be too surprising but Genos was worried. Did he really fall sick because of that day?
Before his thoughts could get darker, Mumen assured him, "Oh. Saitama told me he got a job catering in a hotel. He won't be coming in today."
"I see." On one hand, he was glad Saitama got a job that didn't require him to suffer like that day, but on the other, he was disappointed. He had always looked forward to seeing Saitama on the weekends. It was the sort of thing to keep him going for the entire week.
"You don't need to look so bummed out. He will be here tomorrow.", Mumen teased him.
Am I that obvious?
"Hey, Mumen?"
"Hmm?", Mumen hummed a reply as he cleaned up the mess Sonic made in the backroom. It seemed like Genos wasn't the only one unhappy that Saitama wasn't here.
That stupid cat misses Saitama too.
"How long have you known Saitama?"
There was a pause. Genos wondered if that was inappropriate. Maybe it was something like Saitama said, keeping personal information private.
But Mumen didn't look conflicted. He looked unsure, as if he didn't know where to start.
"We met in middle school. But we weren't this close back then."
"Oh.", Genos hoped Mumen would elaborate. Thankfully, he did.
"Saitama didn't have a lot of friends. No, it's better to say he has none. The kids in school didn't treat him too kindly when they knew Saitama has no parents."
Mumen had finished cleaning up and began grooming King instead.
"It wasn't the nicest childhood for Saitama. But kids are kids. They wouldn't know it would scar Saitama that badly. When I offered my hand to him, he didn't take it. Said that the kids will alienate me too."
King sprawled comfortably on the blanket, enjoying Mumen's affection. If Genos noticed Mumen playing favorites, he didn't call him out for it.
"Like I said, we were kids. There's nothing much we can do about it. But Saitama is strong, he found a way to cope."
Genos connected the dots, "The strays."
"Yeah.", Mumen smiled, as King snuggled closer against him. "He said these animals are like him, unwanted and thrown away. He felt he could relate."
There was a heavy sigh but Mumen continued, "Saitama didn't want anyone to feel that way, not even animals. That's why he built this place for these animals. When I heard of this, I wanted to be a part of it. That's why I'm here now."
".....And that's why he worked so many odd jobs.", Genos concluded.
"Saitama said it himself, he isn't exactly the brightest bulb. People only hire degree-holders these days. It's not like he had a choice. But he is happy, that's what matters the most."
There was a moment of silence after Mumen finished his story. Genos didn't say anything, not like he had to. But he now understood. He could see why Saitama did the things he did.
Genos felt...melancholic. But there was a new passion burning in him. He couldn't be there for Saitama when he was a kid, but things were different now. He vowed to himself, he would be there this time.
And it was at that revelation, Sonic interrupted his thoughts by jumping up to his shoulders and proceeded to scratch up his arms.
"Ouch! Ouch! You stupid cat!"
Mumen laughed at that. "You guys are getting along well."
"What?! How you come up with that inference is beyond me, Mumen."
"It's true though. Sonic rarely warms up to anyone. Even after so long, he only lets Saitama bath him."
"What do you mean?"
Mumen finally looked at him, "Huh? You didn't know? Sonic is the first pet Saitama officially adopted."
"That stupid cat?!"
Mumen laughed again. "He's not stupid, you know. Sonic is smart to know the way back home and can be a good judge of character. Besides, he is well aware that he is Saitama's weakness and he uses the knowledge very well."
"So he's not just stupid, he's sly as well."
"Stupid or sly, he is still just a cat, Genos. There's no need to antagonize him."
Genos huffed annoyingly, but he knew Mumen was right. He is just a cat, it's not like he can compete against me.
So, Genos ignored that cat and tended to Flashy Flash, but before he could touch him, Flash was gone. He had gone hiding behind Mumen instead.
"Flashy still doesn't like you though.", Mumen observed and then gave a small treat to Flash, to which Flashy elegantly snacked on.
"So how did you manage that, Mumen? How did you get them to like you?"
"As cliche as it sounds, you have to be yourself. Pets can feel it, it's almost like their animal instincts, they could tell if you're sincere."
"But I am sincere!", Genos argued hotly.
Mumen hummed at that, almost as if he disagreed. "You are. Just with some ulterior motives too."
Genos went silent at that.
"You didn't argue back, so it must be true." Mumen said as he stood up, brushing off King's golden fur. "I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but the pets must have seen you as a threat, trying to take Saitama away from them."
Genos contemplated, "But they didn't, not to you. Why? How?"
"It's simple, Genos. It's the same reason why you didn't see me as a threat either."
With that, Mumen walked out to the register to clear up some documents, leaving Genos alone with the pets around him to ponder.

Chapter Text
Genos thought deeply about what Mumen had said but he couldn't, for the life of him, figure it out. He had a growing suspicion he was extremely close to the answer, within his reach but not enough to grasp completely.
It got more convoluted when Genos couldn't explain why he wanted to be closer to Saitama, why he was so anxious to see him struggling and why his heart and stomach did all sorts of things whenever he sees Saitama.
Genos still didn't have an answer the next day when Saitama arrived at the store to work. Genos spotted the dark circle under Saitama's eyes. He must have overworked himself again.
Mumen must have noticed it too because he chastised Saitama and procured a can of coke from his bag to give to Saitama.
"Thanks, Mumen! You're the best!", Saitama sang as he pulled the ring of the can and glugged it down.
Mumen offered another to Genos, to which Genos politely accepted with thanks.
"But why coke though? Coffee has more caffeine, I believe." Genos asked, perplexed.
"Saitama complains that coffee is bitter. Coke has that bubbly feeling, it's more refreshing."
"Exactly! And it's cheaper than most coffee brands too!", Saitama added.
Genos stared at the two. The question came up in his mind again. It confused him, why he didn't feel as riled up because of Mumen. It was unnatural to be angry at a cat than at a human.
Saitama broke his line of thought when he addressed them again, "So are you guys free tonight? I got this box of beer from the manager. Said it will expire by next month, so he gave half of it to me."
Genos had wanted to immediately say yes to the offer, refusing to miss a chance to hang out with Saitama but Mumen had cut in.
"Are you sure it's a good idea Saitama? You didn't forget what happened last time, did you?"
"What happened last time?", Genos asked.
"He tri-", Mumen wanted to tell but was instantly cut off by Saitama, "It was an accident!"
Genos noted the faint blush on Saitama's face. It was just like his smiles, almost imperceptible unless you paid attention.
" 'Sides, I got better at it too! I will show you this time!", Saitama defended himself.
"I can't tonight, Saitama. I'm sorry. I have an upcoming test next week. I will need the time to revise."
"Oh."
Saitama sounded disappointed but he immediately turned to Genos, hopefulness in his eyes.
"But you can make it right, Genos?"
"Of course Saitama! I will bring snacks!", Genos exclaimed enthusiastically. He felt that rush again when he saw Saitama smiled because of him.
"Cool! Mumen, you are missing out big time!", Saitama teased Mumen and then walked to the storeroom for restock.
Genos and Mumen were left alone at the front of the shop with Mumen counting the stocks while Genos cleaned. But Genos noticed a tiny smile on Mumen's face.
When Mumen was done, he walked to the back room but stopped beside Genos to lightly pat his back.
"Good luck tonight, Genos!", he said and then continued walking.
Genos's eyes widen in realization. It was as if he had put together the hints and he had solved the mystery.
Mumen was rooting for him! Mumen was on his side! Mumen was not interested in Saitama and neither was Saitama. That was why he didn't feel intimidated by Mumen.
Venturing further with this answer, it made sense for the animals to feel safe with Mumen too. Saitama and Mumen were equally important to the pets, they shared the bond.
All of a sudden, Genos felt dumb. He had learned the art of negotiation in business, manipulated the people and the market to have his way. Yet, how could he be so blind when it came to personal relationships?
"Oh.", Mumen was about to turn the doorknob but turned around to face Genos. "Be careful of Saitama though. He kisses people when he gets drunk."
After dropping a bomb on Genos, Mumen casually walked into the back room.
Genos blinked. And then.
What?!

Chapter Text
It was nerve-wracking. Genos had continued his work as normally as possible. After the shocking revelation from Mumen, dozens of thoughts flooded his mind.
What was that supposed to mean? K-kissing? When he's drunk? Will Saitama remember after that? Should I push him away when it happens? Or should I just let it happen?
No, no, no. That was wrong, Genos scolded himself. That would be taking advantage of a weakened Saitama. It hadn't even happened yet and he was already fantasizing Saitama's lips.
But it is consensual right? He's the one who's going to make the first move. I am just... There, coincidentally there to be kissed.
After an internal debate with himself, Genos continued on to wiping the windows.
When did this begin? Is it normal though, or a syndrome to something else? Should Saitama see a doctor because of this? He wouldn't like it though and will complain that it's a waste of money.
More negative thoughts started coming in as he thought carefully about what Mumen said.
Mumen is aware of this. Did this mean Mumen and Saitama had... before?
Genos dropped the rag. He hated the image, even if it was only Mumen.
He knelt down to retrieve the rag again.
But what if there was someone else other than Mumen?
A new image of a faceless man kissing Saitama appeared this time. The man pushed a drunken Saitama down on a futon. He proceeded to take off Saitama's hoodie and then his pants. He was about to take off his underwear too when Genos angrily threw the rag against the window.
"Yo, Genos? You okay?", Saitama had entered the room again, a concerned look on his face.
Genos looked at the real Saitama, who was just in his imagination a few seconds before. He didn't answer Saitama immediately, slightly ashamed of his irrational outburst. It was just my stupid, vivid imagination! It didn't happen, he hoped.
But that affirmation did nothing to placate himself. So, Genos picked up the rag and the pail of dirty water beside it. He walked to Saitama with a serious look on his face.
"Promise me, Saitama! You will not drink with anyone else but me!", Genos exclaimed, determination filled his voice.
"Huh?"
"If I'm not there with you, you are not allowed to drink alcohol!", Genos emphasized.
"Chill bro. It's not like I drink with just anybody else. It's just you and Mumen.", Saitama said as he dropped the bags of hamster bedding next to the counter, which Genos regrettably failed to notice, else would have offered to help.
"I didn't take you as such a worrywart.", Saitama continued.
"Don't worry, kid. We will drink responsibly!", Saitama teased him.
Saitama had failed to understand his concern. It only served to frustrate Genos further.
"That's not the poi-"
"Ah, why don't you stay over too? It'll be dangerous to walk home after drinking."
"W-what?"
"I have an extra futon. You don't mind right?"
"I don't."
"Cool. You should pack some extra clothes, then you can just head out to your office the morning after.", Saitama decided, seemingly pleased with his perfect arrangement.
"O-okay."
Genos didn't know what he had agreed to.
It was 7 o'clock sharp when Genos knocked on Saitama's door. He had arrived 15 minutes early but didn't want to be seen as too eager.
Genos heard a few footsteps from within and the door opened to reveal Saitama in his striped pajamas.
"Come on in! I'm hungry already!", Saitama said haughtily, but the cheerfulness in his eyes at seeing Genos said otherwise.
Genos gave a quick greeting before entering. Perhaps he should have just knocked when he arrived, Saitama was starving already.
They proceeded to enjoy the pizza and fried chickens Genos brought in comfortable silence. Later, Saitama had turned on a B-horror movie to watch. Personally, Genos wouldn't have voluntarily selected such a low-quality film but Saitama had enjoyed it. He had actually laughed when Genos pointed out the plotholes. Genos continued to poke fun at the main character's stupidity and Saitama giggled. By the climax of the movie, Genos had learned the appeal of B- horror films and looked at it from a different light. Saitama is a genius! This is even funnier than actual comedy films.
When the movie ended, Saitama had offered Genos to use the bathroom to wash up first, before going to bed. That was when Genos remembered the entire point of why he was here. He looked at the empty cans of beer and empty pizza boxes Saitama was cleaning up.
They had finished that half a dozen of beer cans. Genos thought back and had a vague recollection of Saitama opening cans for him. After a mental calculation, he was sure he had drunk five cans and Saitama only had one.
Did Saitama do that on purpose? Was he just being a good host and offered more to me? He did offer the last slice of pizza to me. Or...had he wanted to test my alcohol tolerance?
Genos went a little hopeful with his last thought. He smiled a little as he rinsed after brushing his teeth.
But what if he didn't feel safe enough to be drunk in my presence? Does Saitama not trust me?
Genos slapped himself, on both sides of his face. No, Saitama was too much of a simpleton to think that far. As much as Genos respected Saitama, he had to admit that Saitama really wasn't that bright. He wouldn't have the thought to defend himself from Genos.
Genos exited the bathroom, scolding himself to stop overthinking and just enjoy the sleepover when he saw Saitama in the hallway. He was waiting to use the bathroom but Genos noticed the blush on his face.
Saitama took a few steps ahead, closing the distance between them.
Genos stood there, he looked calm enough on the outside, but his heart and mind were racing faster than a bullet train.
Is this happening? The k-kiss? Is it really happening? Saitama is slightly shorter than me, he might need to tiptoe a little. Would he be able to reach? Should I lower my head a little instead? Should I tilt it? No, that would be weird. Maybe I sho-
Genos's thoughts stopped midway when Saitama stumbled into his arms. Instinctively, Genos caught him. Saitama struggled a little to stand. It took a while but he eventually did.
"Hehe- hic -hehe." Saitama giggled in between hiccups. "Thanks bro, you saved me."
Saitama wriggled out of his embrace and gingerly walked into the bathroom, and shut the door.
Genos stood outside, waiting, like a statue. His mind was suspiciously blank.
A moment later, Saitama exited the bathroom, grunted a goodnight, and stumbled to his futon. Another moment later, Genos heard some quiet snoring from him.
Genos was still standing there, at the exact place he was waiting. His mind was clear, he felt a hundred percent sober despite gulping down five cans of beer, more conscious than he had ever been in a business meeting.
I-It didn't happen. Genos concluded. There was a bad taste in his mouth, Genos assumed must be the aftertaste of alcohol, but he was aware that taste was disappointment.
Maybe a can wasn't enough to do the trick. But it was enough to make him tipsy. Genos analyzed, as he laid on the extra futon Saitama had placed next to his. He inched closer to Saitama. The faint light from the street lights outside illuminated Saitama's sleeping face.
He looked peaceful...and beautiful.
Genos slowly drifted to sleep, his last view before fatigue consuming him, a drooling Saitama across him.
Notes:
Genos is falling.
Falling asleep.
And falling deeper for someone with low alcohol tolerance.

Chapter Text
The morning after was normal enough, though Genos found himself staring when Saitama came out of the bathroom in a green uniform.
"Fubuki Mart?", Genos read aloud the logo on Saitama's shirt.
"Hmm? Oh yeah! I got a new job again. It's a convenience store this time."
"I see."
"The boss is persistent tho. She insisted for me to be on full-time. But I can't. I wouldn't have time for the pet store then."
"Is she bothering you, Saitama? If she is, I ca-"
"Nah, she's a pretty cool boss."
Genos didn't argue back, but he did feel a little suspicious about this Fubuki. After a quick breakfast together, they headed out their separate ways.
Genos felt a little lonely after that. He would have to wait another five days to see Saitama again. If only we live together.
The weather was getting weird nowadays. Last week was a heatwave but this week's weather forecast was heavy raining every day. It was on a Thursday when Genos found himself on the street and the rain just started to pour heavily.
Genos was on his way back to the office after a successful meeting with some business partners. The cafe where they met was close enough that Genos didn't think to drive. When his secretary offered him a lift, he had refused, insisting on taking in some fresh air by taking a walk back. And now, Genos regretted the decision horribly.
Instead, Genos opted to run to the bus stop he spotted a few meters away to take shelter. But before he began to sprint, the rain droplets stopped. Upon closer inspection, Genos noticed a yellow umbrella above his head, and when he turned to look-
"Ke-shiuk! Behind you!", Saitama's finger poked his cheek, that playful smile on his face.
"Saitama!", Genos shouted, astonished to see Saitama here, of all places.
"Bro, you don't need to yell. I'm literally standing beside you."
"But why are you here?", Genos asked but secretly hoped Saitama was here to see him, to grab dinner or something, though Genos knew the probability was near zero.
"Didn't I tell you? The mart I work at is around here.", Saitama said, as he adjusted the umbrella in his hands.
Genos noted that a bigger portion of the umbrella was above himself and his observation was correct when he saw Saitama's sleeve drenched by the rain.
"Y-You didn't tell me that, Saitama. I would have remembered if you did."
"Heh. You sound like you remember everything I said."
"I do actually."
Saitama laughed at that. "Then, do you record my words in a notebook or something?", Saitama meant it as a joke.
But Genos kept quiet. He wasn't going to tell Saitama that. He wasn't going to tell Saitama that he still kept that bandaid in his desk drawer, or that piece of leaflet he passed him last week. It would be creepy.
Instead, Genos changed the topic of conversation to the umbrella. "We should share the umbrella equally, Saitama. Your other arm is all wet now."
"Nah, it's fine. We are almost there anyway."
Genos was preoccupied with Saitama the entire time, he had been clueless about where Saitama had been leading him. Genos looked up to see his office building ahead of him.
Then, Saitama did it again. He took Genos's wrist and Genos felt like he was shocked by electricity from the contact. It was just like their second meeting.
And it was exactly the same, Saitama was staring at his watch for the time. It was like deja vu because Saitama's eyes grew wide like before.
Saitama let out the same shriek of surprise before letting go of his hand.
"I'm late to work! Er..you can take this umbrella. I gotta go now!", Saitama spoke rushingly as he grabbed Genos's other hand to pass him the handle.
Genos shouted after him, but the strong pour of rain drowned his voice and Saitama was already turning the corner.
Genos felt helpless. Things hadn't really changed, had it? He may have known Saitama now, got his number, been to his house and all.
But he didn't repay him like he said he would. Genos was still being saved by Saitama every time, in smaller ways, but the sentiment remained. He knew he was taking advantage of Saitama's kindness and he kept doing it anyway despite being aware.
It was selfish, but Genos didn't want it to stop. He wanted to keep staying by Saitama's side. He wanted his kindness, his attention. And the greed for them was getting bigger and bigger.
Genos came to realize, as he walked into his building and closed the umbrella; his feelings were so out of his control and so out of proportions, there was no way he could ignore it anymore.
It was about time to acknowledge it, Genos thought as he observed the tiny-smiling eggs illustrated on the umbrella.
He likes Saitama. A lot.

Chapter Text
Genos might have come to terms with his feelings, but he took no action about it. It was pathetic, Genos thought, that Mumen had seen right through his emotions before he himself. Even the stupid cat, Sonic, could tell. It might sound condescending but Genos was glad his crush was the most oblivious person he knew.
Thinking back to the past, Genos didn't recall any period in his life where he felt so strongly for someone. Sure, he would look at attractive people around him and appreciate the view but that was about it. There were no vivid imaginations about their lips, no thesis report on the probabilities of looking at their smiles, and definitely no recording their words and habits into a notebook.
Genos rubbed his face in his hands as he sat in his office, thinking.
I'm really too deep in this, am I not?
It was exhilarating, but daunting at the same time. Genos never dated anyone before, he had practically zero experience in his love life. He may have had a few crushes before the incident, but those were relatively mild and fleeting. They never amounted to anything solid.
No, it wasn't like Genos was unattractive. Genos was well-informed of his good looks and body, his capabilities as a CEO, and definitely, for his wealth. He was frequently reminded about them, especially during social events.
Ah, that reminded him of the week after, a charity event hosted by his company's rival, Metal Knight. While it was true that Metal Knight might be his enemy in business, Genos respected and recognized him as an honorable person.
Metal Knight was often generous and actively participating in offering funds and donations for the needy. The coming charity event would be one of his many. For that, Genos would be courteous since their end goal was the same.
Hang on! I should invite Saitama as my partner!
Mentally patting himself on the back, Genos seemed proud of himself for taking up a chance to get closer to Saitama. It would work even better, if Saitama treated it like a date.
Except that it didn't.
When Genos brought up the event and the free food they would get from it, Saitama had sadly declined. Needless to say, Genos was shocked, Saitama never declined free food.
But Saitama had a valid reason. He already picked up a part-time job on that evening. And no, he couldn't cancel on it because he had promised Fubuki too.
Genos was dejected about it and he blamed it on Fubuki. He knew his instincts were right to hate this lady. It was unfair, to dislike a person he hadn't even met but Genos was only human. It was inevitable for him to cast his anger on someone when his perfect-plan-date got ruined.
Came the day of the event and Genos was grumpy as ever. It didn't go unnoticed when Dr. Kuseno who came with him spoke up.
"Genos, is everything alright?"
"Yes, Dr.", Genos tried to mask off his mood by saying, "You know how much I dislike these kinds of events. Even though they are for a good cause, it's exhausting to socialize like this. I would rather just write off a check."
His father figure laughed at his explanation. "I understand, my son. I have to admit though, it's always funny to see you ward off unwanted suitors. It's like watching a romantic comedy movie."
Genos huffed at Dr. Kuseno for making fun of him but he did smile at his remarks. Speaking of movies, Genos would very much rather be watching a B-heck, even a C-horror movie with Saitama than to be here.
He wondered where Saitama was working at the moment. He got the job from Fubuki, so maybe at another convenience store? He hoped Saitama wasn't working late into the night, or else he would have those dark circles under his eyes again tomorrow when they meet in the store.
"Hey, Genos."
Dr. Kuseno's voice broke his thoughts and pulled him back into reality. There was a look of hesitance but Genos waited for him to continue.
"You know you don't have to bring me to those events right? If there is someone else you want to invite as your plus-one, this old man is more than happy to give up his spot."
Genos wanted to reply but he stopped himself.
Dr. Kuseno looked at him, realization in his eyes. "So, there is someone."
Genos nodded, uncharasterically shy to admit to his godfather.
"Who's the lucky lady?"
Genos went quiet.
"Ah, it's a man then."
"Dr. Kuseno, I-"
"My child, it's okay."
Genos stared at Dr. Kuseno but there was no anger or displeasure in his expression. Instead, there was acceptance and relief.
"I'm glad you found someone you like, Genos. Gender doesn't really matter. Well, at least, not to me."
"I...Thank you, father."
Dr. Kuseno smiled at that calling. "I expected you would have lived the rest of your life alone. You don't look like you enjoyed the attention of the men or women who looked your way. I thought you will be comfortable like that. And I thought it was okay too, as long as you are happy. But, as a man who lived most of his life alone, I'm happy you found someone."
He took a sip of his drink and then continued, "But, as a father, I would like to meet this person. I would want to know what kind of a man who managed to steal away my son's heart."
"He's a great man, father. Greater than I deserve. And honestly, I don't think I am worthy enough."
A look of disagreement appeared on Dr. Kuseno's face for the first time in the entire evening.
"I'm sure that isn't true. My son has the best qualities most normal people wouldn't even dare dream about."
Genos exhaled loudly. "Well, if I am as good as you said I am, he wouldn't have turned down my offer to be here today."
Dr. Kuseno looked intrigued, "He had refused?"
Genos nodded, in defeat.
"Why, that is an interesting man.", Dr. Kuseno looked deep in thought, as he sipped his wine and glanced at the wealthy, famous people in the ballroom.
"A man, unattracted to good looks, nor intelligence, and not even wealth. What a peculiar person indeed."
There was a pause and then Dr. Kuseno summarised, "It sounded to me like you will be having a difficult time to win him over, Genos."
Genos agreed inaudibly and was about to say more when someone walked to their corner.
"Genos, Dr. Kuseno, a pleasure to meet you here."
Genos stared at the blue-haired man, Amai Mask, the world-class actor slash model slash singer. The infamous triple threat. He looked handsome, as to be expected, but his personality, was rotten to the core. Genos had the opportunity to know him before and he had desperately hoped he hadn't. Still, Amai was nice enough to contribute to charities, whether out of his goodwill or for publicity, Genos didn't care.
It was out of professional courtesy for Genos to greet him. "Amai. Pleased to meet you too."
They had a few lines of polite exchanges and again with a few other groups of people before Genos excused himself for some refreshments; already depleted his social battery of the day.
Genos escaped to an empty hallway with his glass of wine in hand, eager to get away from the crowd. He opened a door to a balcony to get some fresh air.
It was suffocating in the ballroom, filled with mindless chatter or gossip, though some would take the opportunity to make business talks there, none of them appealed to Genos. It must be bad enough that Genos thought even Sonic's companionship was better than this.
"Hey there, handsome."
A tall, muscular man with dark curly hair had suddenly appeared beside Genos, stunning him, but just as quickly, Genos recovered.
He knew this man. Puri-puri Prisoner, was his nickname. He was the self-made millionaire, with his built from the ground business empire of security facilities, specializing in jails and prisons. An impressive entrepreneur but surrounded by rumors and scandals of him sexually assaulting the prisoners under his care.
Genos decided it was best to stay away from this sort of people. He quickly gave a polite greeting before excusing himself.
But Puri was being difficult, he held Genos by his shoulders, blocking his only exit. As he inched closer, Genos could smell the alcohol on Puri's body.
Grimacing, Genos tried to courteously tell him to piss off.
"Mr. Puri, I need to get back to the ballroom now, if you will excuse me."
"Hey, hey, pretty boy. Don't leave yet. We are just getting to know each other."
Annoyed, Genos tried to push him away by force but Puri held on stronger and invaded his personal space further. His hands went to grope Genos as he tried to fight him off.
Genos was about to seriously hit him when-
"HEY! What are you doing?!"
Genos was never more grateful to hear this voice again. He didn't have to look up to know who it was, but he did it anyway.
There was Saitama, with his everchanging weird clothes, but this time, he was in a white tux shirt, with a yellow tie and a pair of black slacks. In his left hand, was an empty tray with a towel on top. A waiter this time, huh?
Saitama only seemed to realize that it was Genos when he looked behind Puri. And when he did, he was furious. Saitama flung the tray straight at Puri's face. There was a loud 'thud' sound and time slowed down to stop just like it always did when Saitama did anything cool or cute.
Genos could only watch as Saitama pulled him behind himself, serving as a barrier of protection between Genos and Puri.
"Get your dirty hands off my friend, you pervert!" Saitama shouted, as he punched Puri's face again.
Puri fell down to the floor and Genos expected him to be angrily shouting at Saitama, threatening to sue him or something.
But Genos's blood ran cold when Puri addressed Saitama.
"Ah yes, please. More. Beat me up more, shout at me more."
Saitama froze for a moment. "Wait. What?"
"I meant that I love it. I like it when you are rough. It's been a while since I had a feisty one who could hurt me."
That was when Puri stood up to his full height, at least a head taller than Saitama, and walked towards him. His hands had reached out to Saitama's face.
Oh hell no .
Genos didn't even think as he stepped in front of Saitama and grabbed Puri's arm, twisting it at a painful angle until he heard a crack.
Puri had screamed in pain as he took a step back when Genos finally let go of his arm.
"Don't you fucking dare touch him. I will kill you."
Genos didn't wait for a reply as he grabbed Saitama's hand to leave. They didn't stop until they reached the entrance of the ballroom. A few guests were watching but Genos didn't care. They should be safer here with more people around.
He turned to inspect Saitama, but his hand was still tight around his wrist. There was a slight blush on Saitama's cheeks and Genos assumed it must be due to the exertion of running away so quickly.
"Are you okay? He didn't actually touch you, did he?", Genos asked anxiously.
Saitama looked at anywhere but his eyes, mumbling out a "I'm fine."
That was when Genos finally remembered their handholding and promptly let go, embarrassed at his own boldness.
There was a pause and then Saitama spoke, "I didn't know you could do that move. That was super cool!"
Genos looked to see Saitama smile. It was another one this time, not the playful one, not the tiny one. This one looked pleased with a little bit of pride, like he was proud of Genos.
Genos decided that this one was his favorite so far.
"I started taking some self-defense classes recently.", Genos said sheepishly, as he rubbed his neck awkwardly. He actually did, right after the incident with the burglars. He just didn't expect to show off his skills to impress Saitama.
And then, Genos came back to reality. "But what are you doing here, Saitama? I thought you said you were working?"
"I am. As a waiter. Pretty neat huh? I didn't know your event thingy be here tho. This is like a movie, we're like spies, to meet like this."
Genos smiled at that. His evening just went a hundred times better after meeting Saitama.
Saitama grabbed his hand and by now, Genos knew what he wanted. Yet, the tingly feeling was still there.
"Ah, it's about time. Well then bro. Enjoy your dinner. I'm going home now." Wait? Again?

"What? You're leaving so soon?", Genos asked, failing miserably to mask his disappointment.
"I've done my shift? They are rotating two shifts." Saitama explained, as he fumbled to take off his tie.
"And I will have to return these cool clothes to Fubuki.", Saitama added.
Genos grimaced at the mention of that name. All of this mess was because of her. If Saitama had come as his partner, that stupid thing with Puri wouldn't have happened.
"Then, I will send you home. It's not safe this late at night."
Saitama was about to reply when they heard a voice from behind.
"You don't have to do that, Genos-kun."
Genos turned to come face-to-face to a young man. He was tall, slightly taller than Genos himself, with a lean, muscular build. His black hair was tied in a ponytail reaching his lower back. Genos noted his navy-blue martial art uniform was different from the obligatory dress code of formal wear. His catchy outfit was unmistakable, Genos recognized him as the top strongest martial artist that was the talk of the town recently. But Genos couldn't understand why he had interrupted him.
"Ah, Suiryu! Why are you here too?"
He smiled handsomely at Saitama and Genos immediately was on guard against him.
"Yo, Saitama. Must be fate to meet you here. Bakuzan missed you, you know."
"He did?", Saitama brightened up and Genos had to ask, "Who's Bakuzan?"
"It's my pet dog, a Siberian husky. He used to be a stray that Saitama takes care of, until I adopted him."
"It's been so long since you brought him over tho. What happened?"
"Hehe, I've been busy winning tournaments.", Genos watched him bragged on disdainfully but Saitama looked impressed.
"Woah, did you meet anyone strong then?", Saitama asked, curiosity shining in his eyes.
"None as strong as you, Saitama. It gets boring real quick.", Suiryu replied and Saitama looked a little disappointed at that.
Genos had a growing suspicion that Bakuzan wasn't the only thing to link them together and Genos hated it.
"Why don't you come over tonight? Bakuzan will be happy to see you again.", Suiryu asked smoothly.
Genos didn't give Saitama a chance to reply when he cut in, "That's fine. It's getting late and I will be getting Saitama home."
"Ah, Genos-kun. It was rude of me but I don't think we have introduced ourselves. I'm Suiryu, a martial artist. I've heard a lot of good things about you and your company."
Suiryu offered a hand and Genos reluctantly shook it, solely because Saitama was watching.
"We should get goi-", Genos was once again rudely interrupted.
"Yo, Saitama!"
Genos was getting irritated at all the attention Saitama was receiving. He had only wanted to send Saitama home. In hindsight, Fubuki might have been doing him well not letting Saitama be his partner.
This time, the loud person was another young man, with his white hair styled into two parts, like horns. He wasn't in formal clothing either, instead wearing a tight-fitting sports attire. Genos wondered what was the point of a dress code if no one was following it.
"Oh, Garou! Wow, this really is like a movie. We are all meeting at the same time."
"Huh? What? Doesn't matter. You are here, so where's Mumen?", Garou asked rudely and Genos was feeling annoyed by all these new people Saitama seemed to know.
"Heh? Why? You miss him?", Saitama teased Garou, his eyebrows wiggling playfully.
"W-what?! N-no! Charanko misses him, not me!", Garou spluttered out and even Genos, a complete stranger could tell he was lying.
"Let me guess, Charanko is your pet?", Genos asked.
"Yeah and, who the fuck are you?", Garou shouted rudely, as they started to attract attention from other guests.
"Woah, Garou. Language.", Suiryu tried to placate.
Garou opened his mouth, probably to spew out more vulgar words but Saitama stepped in.
"I'm working. Mumen's not here. But you can come over to the shop tomorrow morning. Bring Charanko. You too, Suiryu. Bring Bakuzan.", Saitama spoke to them both.
Then, Saitama grabbed Genos's hand again to look at the time. "Yo guys, I really gotta go, last bus is leaving soon. See ya!"
And with that, Saitama sprinted off. Genos watched him vanished down another hallway before he could even think of calling out to him. Is Saitama getting faster at getting away or what?
Suiryu was the first to recover as he spoke to them, "Well, it was nice to meet you guys. See ya tomorrow!", before casually strolling away.
Garou, being the most immature, flipped a finger at Genos before storming off.
Well, this was great. Genos thought sarcastically. A potentially romantic walk home ruined by two dudes he didn't even expect.
But maybe Garou wasn't the threat. Based on his childish actions, he was probably embarrassed to get caught by Saitama about Mumen. That was something he should ask Mumen about. Genos couldn't say the same for Suiryu though, that dude was suspicious.
Exasperated, he texted his godfather for his early leave. Genos had enough for the night. He just hoped those guys wouldn't be there tomorrow when he volunteered at the shop.

Second male leads never stood a chance.....or do they?
Chapter Text
Well, hope was just a hope because as told by Saitama, Garou and Suiryu had obediently come, each with a dog beside them.
Just like Suiryu mentioned, Bakuzan was a large dog of Siberian husky breed, but he didn't look too friendly. Garou, on the other hand, had brought a small chihuahua with light brown fur. Charanko looked fierce, as if ready to bite, but that cute face wasn't scaring anyone.
Saitama and Mumen were more than happy to see them, though more for the dogs than their owners, Genos noticed. Charanko, that angry ball of fur, had jumped off Garou's hold and ran towards Mumen the moment they entered the store.
Mumen laughed out loud as Charanko licked his face, as if happy to see Mumen after so long. Like owner, like pet, Genos deduced. Garou had followed his dog to sit beside Mumen on the floor. The two had begun a conversation but Genos was too busy surveying Suiryu and Saitama to listen.
Saitama had knelt before Bakuzan, petting and talking to him, using the same tone he always used with Sonic. Bakuzan's tail started wagging, enjoying Saitama's affection.
With everyone else preoccupied, Suiryu struck up a conversation with Genos. "Hey, Genos. Didn't expect to see you here too!"
"I work here.", Genos responded coldly. He felt threatened, with all these new predators in his territory.
"Ah, I see. Where is Sonic? I bet he missed me."
As if on cue, Sonic emerged from the back room and strolled elegantly towards Saitama, already impatient. Genos watched intently, he was positive Sonic would be hostile.
For once, Sonic was on Genos's side. When Suiryu reached out to pet Sonic, he had scratched his hands aggressively. But Suiryu was nonchalant about it, he went on calling Sonic a 'tsundere'.
Saitama heard that and laughed alongside Suiryu. For some unknown reason, Genos felt a wave of surging anger in his chest at that scene in front of him. He clenched his fists tightly, as if wanting to punch someone.
But no, he shouldn't act so recklessly. Still, Genos had seen and heard enough. He knew he wouldn't be able to do anything with the other predators here. Instead, Genos mumbled that he needed to check the stock and stormed into the back room.
In there, King was hiding in a corner while Flashy Flash was sleeping soundly on a blanket. Sighing, Genos walked up to King and sat beside him.
"Hey, King. What's wrong?"
King looked up to Genos with his big, brown eyes. Genos could tell he was anxious about the new strangers in the store. But Genos wasn't Saitama or Mumen. He didn't know what to do to comfort King. So, he did what he thought was the best.
Genos sat against the wall, made himself and King comfortable, as he wrapped his arms around King, consoling him with soft words. King seemed to calm down a little after that, his panting had slowed and the trembling stopped too.
Flashy, who was resting, had woken up and voluntarily moved towards Genos and comfortably snuggled in his lap, probably seeking warmth.
As Genos rested, with a dog and a cat on either of his sides, Genos contemplated what he needed to do next. He wasn't giving up, no, definitely not. But he wasn't going in without any plans. He had not anticipated a rival. It never occurred to him. In hindsight, a kind and honest man like Saitama would have suitors but Genos wasn't aware of that.
Genos sighed but he wasn't too worried. He might have zero experience in his love life but he is a businessman. If this was a battle of wits and tricks, Genos knew the last thing he wanted to do was to be desperate. In business, they called it supply and demand. Playing hard to get would be better. Isn't that why the female leads always go for the bad boys, instead of the nice second male leads?
With that in mind, Genos decided to remain calm as he continued petting King and reached for a blanket to put on Flash. He didn't know how much time passed when Mumen came in.
Mumen noticed him and decided to join him on the floor. Almost immediately, Flash went to Mumen instead. Ungrateful brat, Genos thought.
The annoyance must have been clear on Genos's face because Mumen smiled. "It's natural for animals to seek out more familiar scents. They will feel safer."
Mumen continued when Genos didn't reply, "But King sure likes you more now."
"You think?"
"Yeah, and Saitama too, I'm sure."
Genos looked at Mumen's face, expecting to see him smirking to make fun of him, but Mumen looked sincere.
All of a sudden, the door opened loudly, startling all of them. Garou was there, with Charanko in one hand. His eyes widened when he saw Genos and Mumen sitting closely on the floor.
Genos knew exactly what Garou had misunderstood when he noticed the rage in his eyes but Mumen spoke up, "Garou? I thought you left to practice?"
Garou cleared his throat, he was avoiding their gaze. "Yeah, I came back to ask if you will be free for dinner. But turns out you are busy."
"Huh? What do you mea-?", Mumen asked but before he could finish, Garou turned angry and shouted, "Nevermind!" before storming away.
Genos saw the pain in Mumen's eyes when Garou turned his anger towards him. It was simple, for Genos, as an outsider, to tell their feelings were mutual. But Mumen was dense and Garou was impatient.
Genos felt guilty. He had ruined the dinner plan after all.
"Mumen, Garou's just jealous."
"Huh? What for?"
Genos exhaled loudly. Saitama and Mumen are the same kind of people, aren't they?
"He saw us being close, he must have misunderstood."
It was best to be straightforward to the oblivious kind. You could say it with a megaphone, print it on a large banner, broadcast it to the entire world, but they would still be confused.
Mumen probably wasn't as dense as Saitama because he did get the meaning.
"Oh.", Mumen thought for a moment before continuing, "But there was nothing betwee-"
"Yes, nothing between us. You know that, I know that, but Garou doesn't."
Genos felt weird playing the matchmaker, but he already went this far. "Garou is insecure. That's how you will normally feel when you think you are not worthy enough for the person."
The statement hit a little too close to home. But Genos continued nonetheless, "So, if you really like him too, Mumen, you should make him understand."
There was a moment of silence. Then, Mumen passed Flashy to Genos and stood up, determination in his eyes.
"I should go. I have a confession to make."
Genos smiled. He shouted a "Good luck!" as he watched Mumen ran out of the room.
After the motivational talk, Genos was compelled to take action as well. He gathered up his courage to check on Saitama and Suiryu.
And that was when he opened the door to see Suiryu hugging Saitama.
All hell broke loose.
Screw playing hard to get!

But was there even a second male lead to begin with?
Chapter Text
Genos stormed towards them and broke off the hug. He stood in between to stare angrily at Suiryu.
"G-Genos?"
Genos saw Suiryu smirked and Genos held himself back from punching him.
But Suiryu was already turning to leave, leading Bakuzan out of the store.
"See ya around, Saitama, Genos!", Suiryu called out before walking away.
The store went quiet, now with everybody else gone. Saitama resumed to pick Sonic up and headed into the back room. Genos followed close behind.
"Dude, what were you doing just now?", Saitama asked but Genos had no intention of answering.
Instead, "What was that hug for?", Genos questioned, anger sipping through.
Saitama, ever so clueless, failed to hear it out.
"A goodbye hug?"
"Then why don't I get those too?"
Saitama laughed at that, thinking it was a joke. "We don't meet often, Suiryu and I. 'Sides, he's going away again. Probably won't be back for another year."
Genos, for the first time that day, finally heard something good. "A year?"
Saitama was preoccupied with sweeping the fur on the floor as he answered, "Yeah. Some big martial art competition. It's gonna be at..."
Saitama trailed off, Genos was sure Saitama already forgot.
"So yeah.", Saitama ended it that way, like he always did when he failed to remember something.
Genos felt relieved, almost as if a large rock was lifted off his heart since last night.
But he still wanted to know.
"How did you two meet?"
Saitama thought for a moment and then, "We fought off some bad guys together.", and that was it.
Genos waited for more but that really was it. Saitama went to take out the garbage and Genos followed again.
"Was there anything else? You were interested in his fights with someone strong."
Saitama threw the bag into the large container and walked into the store again.
"We sparred. Just once actually. And I won."
Saitama went into the bathroom to wash his hands.
"Did he want a rematch then?"
Saitama had dried his hands when he replied, "Nah, we are cool now."
"That was it?"
"What more do you want to hear?"
Genos paused but honesty seemed to be the best policy so he said, "Suiryu looked like he is interested in you, Saitama."
Saitama stopped walking abruptly and Genos knew he had hit the nail on the head.
Saitama quickly busied himself with filling up the water bowl for the pets but Genos knew he was hiding something.
Genos insisted, "Am I wrong, Saitama?"
Saitama released a heavy sigh, defeated by Genos's pushy attitude.
"He confessed before."
WHAT. WHEN. WHERE. HOW. THAT FUCKE-
But Saitama managed to stop his wrath in time as he continued, "And I rejected him. I thought he was joking. I mean he's a playboy and all. And he's a cool friend."
A pause, then Saitama added very quietly but Genos still heard him, "I thought I don't swing that way."
Momentarily forgotten about Suiryu, Genos asked cautiously, "You thought?"
He didn't want to sound hopeful but Saitama used past tense.
"Actually, now that I think about it, I don't swing any way. I'm bald and poor and stupid. Who would want me?", Saitama said hurriedly. He was trying to make a joke but Genos could tell, Saitama was feeling pathetic.
A look to his face confirmed Genos's thought. Saitama's face was blanker than ever. When Genos first got to know Saitama, he assumed the blank face was his default look. But now that they were spending time together, now that Genos had seen Saitama's smiles, Saitama's anger, Saitama's shyness, Genos understood one thing.
The blank face was his mask, to cover up his pain, his loneliness, his lack of self-confidence. Genos hated it. When that blank face was up, Genos couldn't tell if Saitama was suffering quietly, if he was sad about something.
Genos wanted to know, He wanted to know everything about Saitama. He wanted to see him smile, he wanted him to be happy, with Genos. Genos made a vow, he was going to keep it.
"I would want you, Saitama!"
"Eh?"
"I would want you! You are not the bad things you said you are, you are kind and gentle, and selfless. To me, you are attractive.", Genos emphasized.
Saitama looked at him, his blank face slowly disappearing, replaced by a smile. It was almost the same as the Tiny Smile, but there was something else in Saitama's eyes, gratefulness.
A feeling of warmth began to bloom in Genos's chest, and later spreading to his entire body, as he gazed at the soft, gentle smile.
"Thanks, Genos, for making me feel better."
"That's not what I meant, Saitama. I-"
"I know, Genos."
"You do?"
"Yeah. You and Mumen are always so nice to me, I appreciate it."
Genos wanted to say more but Saitama had reached up to ruffle his hair. "Thank you but you don't have to butter me up."
Saitama proceeded to head out to the counter, but Genos didn't follow him this time.
Genos touched his hair, at the exact place where Saitama brushed it. He didn't think of me in that way.
I need to change that.

Chapter Text
"Something happened while I was gone?", Mumen asked curiously, as they packed up, ready to close the store for the day. Saitama was in the storeroom, doing double-check on stocks.
"Not really." Genos replied. "How about you and Garou?"
The reaction was immediate. There was a deep blush blooming on Mumen's face.
"N-nothing much, just a dinner together tonight."
Genos smiled. He was happy for them, he really was. But he wondered when can he ever reach this level with Saitama. At this rate, with Saitama's level of obliviousness, definitely not soon enough for Genos.
"Lucky you."
"You should ask Saitama out for dinner too.", Mumen said casually, as he put on an extra layer of jacket.
Genos stared at him, momentarily stunned. Mumen turned to see his expression and quickly continued, "Friends go out to dinner too, right? It doesn't necessarily have to be romantic, like a date. Just treat it as a meal together, if you are feeling pressured."
There was a pause and then, "Mumen, I need your advice."
Genos figured there was no one else better to ask than Mumen. He had zero dating experience and he will definitely need guidance for this. Mumen didn't laugh at him when he revealed that and Genos immediately knew his decision was right.
"Well, you can always start simple. As I said, a dinner at a nice place to get to know each other more. When you guys get closer, go for a movie together. If you want to be fancier, some guys even take their partners to theme parks on first dates."
Genos opened his phone and began taking notes in there.
"Everyone has different tastes after all. It is better for you to understand what Saitama likes and dislikes. Then, you can decide and plan what to do together."
"Then, what does Saitama like or dislike?", Genos asked, his fingers at ready to type more.
But Mumen laughed. "That is something for you yourself to find out, Genos. Don't do everything by the book, especially when it comes to the matter of the heart. Isn't that the fun of falling in love?"
"I wouldn't know. I never did before."
Mumen patted his shoulder, "Then, experience it this time. Wholeheartedly. Sincerely."
Genos looked Mumen in the eyes and found comfort in his words. "Thank you, Mumen."
Mumen smiled as he released his grip on the shoulder, "No problem. You did tell me about Garou. So, we are even."
That was when Saitama walked into the room and Genos took up the courage he gathered, as he shouted, "Let's go on a dinner together tonight, Saitama!"
"Sure.", came the short reply.
Well, that was easy.
"Mumen, you are coming too right?"
Scratch that, it wasn't.
Genos thanked the gods that Mumen was on his side because, "Ah no, sorry. I already have plans tonight. You guys should have fun!"
"Oh too bad. Next time then.", Saitama sighed and he turned back to Genos, "Are we still on?"
That was the plan from the start; just the two of them alone but Saitama didn't know that. "Of course! I will come pick you up at 7?"
"That sounds like a date, but sure.", Saitama joked but Genos's heart had skipped a beat at that remark.
Genos was nervous, a little anxious too. His hands felt clammy, he kept checking his reflection to make sure he looked decent enough. He had styled his hair and dressed up for the night, in a black tux shirt and black slacks but he did forego the suit and tie.
He took a deep breath and knocked on the door. The door opened to reveal Saitama in his usual outfit, his signature hoodie, and brown pants, with a pair of red sneakers.
"Oh, I didn't know we have to dress up. Should I go change?"
But Genos was quick to assure him, "That's fine. You look good in anything, Saitama."
"I already said you don't have to butter me up. But I don't have any fancy clothes to change into anyway. Where are we going exactly?", Saitama asked as he locked his door and together, they walked down the stairs.
"I know a place that has premium beef dishes. I recalled you prefer beef more whenever you pick a bento in convenience stores."
Saitama turned to stare at him, "But that's going to be expensive, Genos!"
"It is my treat, Saitama."
"Eh? Why would you be treating?"
"Because I asked you out, Saitama.", Genos answered as he opened the car door for him.
"Woah dude, even your car is cool!"
That remark reminded Genos that Saitama had never seen him driving before. He had always taken the chance to walk Saitama home after work, in order to spend more time together.
"It's nothing much.", Genos replied humbly as he sat on the driver seat and started the car engine.
Saitama was busy admiring the interior of the sports car, forgetting his seatbelts. So, Genos did the gentlemanly thing when he leaned forward to put the seatbelt on for Saitama.
As he sat back again, he noticed Saitama's face had warmed up. Should I turn on the air conditioner? The weather is getting colder nowadays though.
"Saitama, are you feeling warm? Should I lower the temperature a little?"
But Saitama was staring out the window now, "I-It's fine. Let's go, Genos."
Genos complied as he started driving. His heart was beating so loud, he hoped Saitama didn't hear him.

It's not just your heart tho, Genos...
Chapter Text
"I definitely can't afford this." Saitama whispered, more to himself than to Genos, as he looked up to the restaurant.
Genos thought the place was decent enough, he had called for a reservation only a few hours ago and had got a table instantly. Though it was probably because they recognize his name.
As they got to the door, Genos stated his name and reservation code automatically. The Maître d' spared a quick glance at Saitama's outfit but was smart enough to keep her mouth shut. She brought them to the table and promptly excused herself.
Genos had wanted to do the gentlemanly thing again and pull the chair for Saitama but Saitama was faster to sit himself down.
Another waitress attended to them, offering them some light refreshments and menus.
Genos looked across the table to his date, neglecting the menu in his hands.
"Yeap, definitely can't afford this.", Genos overheard Saitama muttered to himself.
"What would you like to have, Saitama? I would recommend the premium beef I mentioned earlier. I'm sure you will like it."
Saitama hesitated, but he answered, "Yo, Genos. I appreciate you bringing me here, but a dish here is a month's salary for me."
Genos opened his mouth to explain, wanting to insist to Saitama that it was his idea, his treat.
But, before he could do so, another person appeared at their table.
Genos frowned at the man.
"Fancy meeting you here, Genos. What a coincidence!"
Genos didn't reply, hoping he would get the message to leave.
He didn't.
"And this is?", Amai asked as he addressed Saitama.
Genos cut in before Saitama tried to reply. "He is my date. I would appreciate it if you would please excuse us."
"Ah, I see. Genos's date huh?", Amai looked at Saitama, gave him a once-over, a look of displeased appeared on his face.
Irritated, Genos wanted to call out to him to leave but Amai continued, "You are aware that there is a dress code here right? I am surprised that this place is getting unprofessional to let random people in now."
Genos wanted to argue but Amai was faster, "Genos, I am disappointed at your choice of a date. I expected you to be better than this."
"That's enough!"
Saitama had stood up as he spoke again, "You can go ahead and judge me but not to Genos. You are the exact bad image of rich people who look down on others. You disgust me!"
Amai's beautiful face morphed into a look of disbelief. "W-What? I? Disgust you?"
But Saitama was already leaving to the door. And Genos rushed to follow. But he did stop at the door to look back at Amai.
"Saitama is right. Your rude mannerism is indeed disgusting!"
Genos didn't hear Amai's reply as he ran out to search for Saitama.
He had to turn many corners and reroute a few more times until he caught a glimpse of the bald head.
"Saitama!"
Genos saw Saitama stopped for a moment but then he walked away even faster.
Panicking, Genos ran to catch up and caught hold of his wrist but Saitama wasn't looking at him; his gaze on the ground.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know that would happen. I didn't know that jerk will interrupt. Next time, I will bring you somewhere private instead." Genos rushed out the words, then he repeated once more, "I'm sorry."
Saitama sighed and rubbed his face with his other hand. "Why are you apologizing? It's not your fault. You should let go of my hand."
" No . If I let go of you, you will run off again."
"I won't."
"Then, why were you avoiding me just now? And why aren't you looking at me now? Are you angry at me?"
At that, Saitama did look at him, looking appalled, "What? No!"
"Then, why?", Genos couldn't hide the sadness in his voice. Their first date together and it had gone horribly wrong. Saitama was running away from him.
"I...I'm not good with words, Genos. I don't know how to say this. But I'm not avoiding you, not really."
"Tell me. I will listen, no matter what you want to say.", Genos said resolutely, he moved his hand from Saitama's wrist to his hand, securing them safely in his hold.
There was hesitance in Saitama's eyes but he said, "The jerk was rude, but he is right. It's weird for others to see us sitting together. We don't match."
Genos's chest ached, like someone just punched him there.
Saitama added, "That kind of place is for you, Genos. But I don't belong there. I feel bad, like I'm embarrassing you."
You're not. Don't say it like that, it hurts.
"Genos? Genos? Woah, why are you crying?"
Genos didn't realize his cheeks were getting wet but he watched as Saitama reached up and used his sleeves to wipe away his tears.
"Do you hate me now, Saitama?"
Saitama's eyes widened in shock, "No! Of course not! It's just...what I said..."
"I don't care about that! I don't care what other people think! No one has the right to judge who I want to be with! It's my choice and mine alone!"
"Well, I don't mea-"
"Please don't say that we don't match! Please don't say that you embarrass me! Because you don't, I like to be with you! More than anyone else!"
Saitama retracted his hand after wiping off the tears. For a moment, none of them spoke, simply gazing into each other's eyes. Genos could see the doubt on Saitama's face, slowly replaced by a gentle smile.
...Yet, there was still something else in his eyes, something Genos couldn't decipher; something Genos couldn't understand.
"Thank you, Genos."
Then, Saitama did something unexpected. He used his hand, which was in Genos's hold, to grab on Genos's wrist.
"Let's go! I'm starving!", Saitama exclaimed loudly, then dragging Genos along.
They turned to another street when Genos finally thought to ask, "Where are we going?"
"Wc Donalds! We should eat fast food when we are feeling down! I'm craving french fries!"
Genos smiled at Saitama's returning happiness. Whether he was doing it for the sake of Genos, Genos couldn't be sure. But as long as Saitama didn't hate him, he was fine with whatever.
"Yes, Saitama!"
As long as we're together, anything is fine.

Chapter Text
After the dinner incident, Genos was hesitant to do anything more even though he wanted to. Saitama had returned to normal by the end of the night, when Genos sent him home.
But Genos knew something had changed. And it wasn't good. The distance between them had grown wider. Genos blamed it on Amai but deep down, he knew that wasn't just it.
Saitama had seen a little of Genos's world and was intimidated. He had felt lacking. Saitama said it himself, he didn't belong there.
Through Genos's ears, it had meant he didn't belong there, beside Genos.
Should I...Should I give up? Would it be better if we are just friends?
Genos didn't want to. But he didn't know what else to do either. He didn't know how to convince Saitama and change his mind. He didn't know how to set things right between them.
The dark thoughts plagued his mind the entire week and when the weekend came, Genos felt more uncertain than ever.
The dilemma must be obvious enough for Mumen to notice that he asked, "Something on your mind, Genos?"
Genos looked around in the backroom to check and noticed Saitama was outside, talking to a customer.
So, he proceeded to pour his heart out to Mumen. Mumen had listened intently and asked questions at times. When Genos was done, Mumen went quiet.
Genos was anxious about the silence so he asked, "So what do you think I should do?"
When Mumen tilted his head to stare at Genos, there was an unfamiliar look on his face. Genos had never seen that expression on Mumen before. It actually looked unnatural.
There was a deep frown on his face.
Mumen was angry.
"Are you telling me, you thought of giving up?"
Genos went quiet.
Mumen had turned his back against him, preoccupying himself with grooming King.
"I don't think you should come here anymore, Genos. I think it will be better if you leave."
What?
Of all people, Genos knew Mumen was the most supportive of him pursuing Saitama. He had given him bits of advice and tips. Even if Mumen didn't do such things, Mumen was a good friend. Did Genos say something so bad to make Mumen angry?
"If you think pursuing Saitama is a game for you, you should stop. I regret helping you if that was your intention in the first place."
"It's not a gam-"
"But your hesitance is your answer, Genos. I don't think you are really in love with Saitama."
Mumen sighed. "I'm sorry if I sound too harsh. But it did sound to me you were not serious. A few words from Saitama and you are already giving up? Saitama may look expressionless on the outside, but he feels deeper than most people. Please don't play with his heart."
"But I'm not! I wouldn't hurt Saitama in any way!"
"I know. I could tell that you did want to repay Saitama's kindness by volunteering here every weekend. I could see you putting effort and time in. That was why I wanted to help you. But what you said just now, it made me think again. That's not love, Genos. That's hero worship."
"Hero worship?"
"You said Saitama had saved you a few times right? Aren't you just feeling grateful to him?"
Genos was confused. Did he really mistake his feelings for being thankful as love? Was it just a crush on someone brave and nothing more?
"I'm sorry, Genos. That was rude of me. It was also my fault to push you towards Saitama. But Saitama is my best friend. I just want to protect him from all this unnecessary pain. It is clear that both of you are of different worlds. Maybe you should find someone of your own status, if you want to avoid this dilemma."
Was that really it? His excitement to seeing Saitama? His obsession with him? His anger and jealousy to the other people close to him? All of those feelings just because of hero worship?
Genos didn't know the answer to any of them.
It was then Saitama entered the room.
"...Something's wrong? Genos, you look pale.", Saitama asked and then reached out to touch his forehead, checking his temperature.
But Genos moved away quickly. "I-I don't feel so well. I should leave."
"Oh? Make sure you dri-"
Genos was already out of the store before he could hear the rest of Saitama's advice.
He couldn't do this now. He couldn't look at Saitama right now. He would actually go insane with all these questions in his head.
So, Genos went straight home. He took a cold shower, worked out in his home gym, managed his business reports, and even cleaned around his house. But after he did everything, the moment he sat to rest, there was only one thing on his mind; Saitama.
He had a sleepless night, as he questioned himself and thought of all the things that had happened between them. When the sun came up the next day, he still didn't have any answers.
Genos didn't go to the store, even though his heart had stubbornly told him to, he had wanted to see Saitama. He missed him.
It's stupid, it was just a day before that we met. You don't miss someone this quickly.
He only felt more guilty when Saitama texted him.
Hey Genos.
R u feeling better?
Don't worry about the store.
Take care n rest well.
Call me if u need anything.
Saitama didn't usually text that much, he must have been worried for Genos.
Genos went back to bed then, depressed. Eventually, he did manage to fall asleep as fatigue overcame him.
It was much later in the evening when Genos was wakened up by a call. The caller ID revealed it to be from Saitama. Genos hesitated but he did answer.
"Hello? Is this Genos-san?"
Genos immediately stood up, fully alert. That wasn't Saitama.
"And who are you? Why would you have Saitama's phone?"
"We are calling from X Hospital. There had been an accident. A fire broke out at...."
Genos dropped his phone on the floor.
The hospital.
An accident.
A fire.
No. No. No. No. No.

Chapter Text
Genos drove as fast as he could, he might have gone above the speed limit, but that was the smallest of his worries at the moment.
He hated himself so much right now. If yesterday was their last meeting, if that was what he last said to Saitama. And he had fucking moved away when Saitama tried to touch him.
Genos remembered the last messages he got from Saitama. Is this the end?
He didn't notice the tears falling. But he did realize there were no sleeves to wipe them away this time.
I...I don't want to lose him. There are still many things I want to say to him, things to do with him.
No. He refused to think those dark thoughts. Saitama is so strong. Nothing could happen to him.
.. But he had bled. He had been injured before. Will he leave me? Just like my family did?... Am I going to be alone again?
Genos didn't think as he rushed into the hospital the moment he arrived; his car carelessly parked at the side.
He asked the receptionist impatiently about Saitama. He was told he was in one of the patient's rooms.
A patient room. Okay, he must be fine. Right? He has to be.
As he opened the door, Genos saw the curtain pulled around the bed.
Genos stopped breathing as he walked towards the bed and gently pull away the curtain.
Time stopped then.
Saitama was sitting upright on his bed, as he quietly munched on a banana, his other hand was holding a manga.
"Yo, Genos? Are you feeling better now?"
Without a warning, he rushed forward to hold Saitama in his arms.
Yes. I am feeling better now.
Time had returned to normal and Genos felt that he could breathe properly again.
"Please don't do this again, please don't make me worry like this again." I thought I lost you.
"Huh? I'm fine tho."
Genos reluctantly let go of Saitama to inspect him. Saitama did look fine, other than the reddening ears. Is Saitama feeling cold or?
"But the hospital had called me. They told me there was an accident, a fire."
"Oh, about that. I don't have an emergency contact so they went ahead and called the two numbers on my phone. You and Mumen."
"And the fire?"
"Yeah, that. A fire broke out at that shop 'round the corner. And there were kids, so I went in to fetch them."
Saitama finished off so casually and Genos actually wondered why Saitama was in a hospital.
"Then, why are you here in a hospital, Saitama?"
"Because he sprained his ankle and dislocated his shoulder, that's why."
Both of them turned to see Mumen at the doorway, a bag of snacks in his hand.
"Hey, Mumen! Thanks for the food! You know how bland hospital food tastes."
"Did you like the mangas too?"
"Yeah! You're the best, Mumen!"
Genos stood there as he watched Saitama looked into the bag, picking his favorite snacks. Now that Mumen mentioned it, he noticed the discomfort when Saitama moved his right shoulder.
Mumen cleared his throat and asked, "You are here too, Genos?"
"Yeah, the hospital called me."
"I'm fine, Genos. You should leave. You are sick, aren't you? Go home and rest more!", Saitama said in between bites of a tuna onigiri.
" No. "
"Huh? I already said it's fin-"
"You are the one who's on a bed now, Saitama. Don't worry about me. I will update the hospital about your emergency contacts. From now on, they will call me first if anything were to happen."
Genos headed out to the counter without waiting for a reply. He was filling the forms at a corner when he noticed Mumen walking towards him.
"You don't have to do that, Genos."
"I want to."
Mumen said no more after that.
After the forms were handed in and filed, Genos turned to Mumen. "We need to talk. About Saitama."
Mumen only nodded as Genos lead them out to the open space outside the hospital. It was nighttime already.
They were quiet for some time, simply looking at the stars above.
"I am in love with Saitama."
There was a long pause. Then, Mumen replied, "I see."
"It isn't hero-worship, it's not a silly crush, it's definitely not just because of I'm grateful."
Genos went on, "It might have started off like that, true, the first few times I met him. But the feelings have changed, nurturing and growing into something else. I wasn't certain when you asked me yesterday. But, after what happened today, I thought I lost him for good. I thought I wouldn't be able to see him again. My heart...was crushed. There is no way I can label this as anything else other than love."
"He has become someone so dear, so precious to me, Mumen.", Genos finished.
Mumen let out a loud exhale. "I believe you. I saw you walking into the room. I saw your face. You looked...terrible."
Genos smiled at that.
"I'm sorry for yesterday, Genos."
"No, Mumen, you were right. I need to make my feelings clear."
"So, we are good now? We are still friends right?"
"We are always friends, Mumen."
They smiled at each other this time. "You should stay behind with Saitama, Genos."
"Thanks. Saitama is right, Mumen really is the best."
Mumen laughed out loud at that.
Notes:
I'm sorry, I took a two-days break. Hehe. But don't worry, my beloved readers, there will be no more waiting. I will update daily from now on. In fact, we are actually right on schedule now.
Phase 2 is coming to an end soon... We now know of Genos's feelings, how about Saitama's?
Chapter 20
Notes:
So, I found out today that the tag I used, "Saitama has MANY odd jobs" is a canon fact. I assumed he did but I didn't know there were solid evidence( Interviews of ONE and Murata sensei, OVA and drawings)
He worked as a construction worker(that was how he met Amai in the toilet), in a theme park(where he scared Tatsumaki in a ghost house?) and an actual convenience store worker(where a robber threatened him with a knife but dumb Sai was looking for barcode to scan?)
My mind is blownnnn. If anyone has seen the drawing of Sai as convenience worker, send it to me! I NEED IT FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES!
Forgive my enthusiasm. Anyway, let's finally meet Fubuki, shall we?

Chapter Text
Saitama was sound asleep when Genos went back to check on him. He was snoring softly, a little bit of drool at the side of his mouth. Genos thought he must be too deep in love, to think that sight looked cute.
Genos observed closely, as he sat down on the chair beside the bed. Saitama looked much younger like this, snuggled under a blanket. He looked innocent. Genos found himself wanting to protect this man. A man four years his senior, a man who would run into burning buildings, a man who would shield random people from harm.
This man didn't look like he needed protecting, but Genos wanted to anyway.
He wanted to get closer to him, to take a place in Saitama's heart, just like he did so easily with Genos's.
Will you let me, Saitama? Will you let me do that?
Genos reached forward to touch his face but decided against that. Instead, he secured the blanket tightly around him.
"You shouldn't have just run in like that, Saitama. I know how selfless you are when it comes to saving people. You should think of yourself more, think of how I would feel if anything were to happen to you."
Genos had spoken so softly, it was barely a whisper.
"I...I like you, Saitama."
There was no reply, of course, as Genos could still hear the snoring, could see the slow rise and fall of his body as he breathed in and out. He should confess when Saitama awakes. But he wouldn't yet, not until he was sure Saitama wouldn't reject him. So, he still had a long way to go.
Due to Saitama's insistence that he was fine, the hospital could do nothing but to discharge him the very next day. When they went to settle the fee, the owner of the shop was already there, insisting on paying; grateful to Saitama for saving her children. Saitama, being Saitama, had brushed it off as easily.
Genos was upset about Saitama's nonchalance and lack of concern for his health but he didn't say anything. Saitama was in a good mood after the encounter, Genos wanted to keep it that way.
"Well, thanks for staying with me last night, Genos. You should leave for work now."
"What about you then? I should send you home at least."
"Home? I'm heading to work now too."
"What?"
"What?"
Genos was taken aback, "There's no way you're going to work like that. Look at your leg, you're still hopping around."
"It's fine. I've been through worse than a sprain."
"That's not the point! You should let it heal properly!", Genos insisted.
"It is healing. It can heal while I'm at work.", Saitama said confidently.
Genos didn't know how to argue with that logic. That sentence was so wrong, he didn't even know how to correct it.
"Alright then, I'm going now.", Saitama said as he started walking away but he didn't get far before Genos grabbed his hand.
"Get in the car. I will bring you to work. And I will bring you home after that."
Genos knew he couldn't win against Saitama, the best he could do was to support him closely behind.
"O-Okay. Thanks, Genos!"
No, don't thank me for this. I'm already regretting it.
It turned out the convenience store where Saitama was working at, was really just two blocks away from Genos's building. When they entered the shop, a beautiful lady was at the counter. She must have noticed Saitama limping, because she rushed forward and grabbed him by the shoulders.
"Saitama! Why are you here? Mumen called me and told me what happened."
"He did? I'm fine. I'm ready for my shift."
"Don't be silly. Go home and get some res...Ah, who is this handsome man with you?"
Genos guessed this lady must be Fubuki. She looked pretty enough, tall with an attractive body to boost, her green uniform seemed too tight around her body though.
How she knew Mumen was another question Genos wanted to know. Were the three of them so close already?
"Ah, this is Genos. Genos, this is Fubuki."
"So, you are Genos. I've heard many things about you from Saitama and Mumen."
She gave Genos a once-over, as if she was a judge, rating a contestant. Genos didn't like it, though she wasn't rude the way Amai was.
"I could say the same thing to you."
Saitama must have looked at the time on the wall, because he interrupted, "Er...Genos, you should head to your work now. You don't want to be late because of me. Thanks again yea!"
Genos was pushed out of the store by Saitama but he managed to say, "Call me once the shift is over, I will bring you home!"
He only got to see Saitama's back when he turned back to look. Genos could see Fubuki pestering Saitama as he walked to the storeroom, most likely to change into his uniform.
Genos annoyingly made his way to his building.
Who is Fubuki to them? Why is she so close to Saitama?
Those thoughts had plagued his mind the entire day while Genos worked.
Could she be...another rival?
Notes:
Nah, she's not. Not everyone is a rival, Genos.
...For all you know, she might be playing matchmaker.

Chapter Text
When it was time off work, Genos checked his phone but found no messages from Saitama. Getting worried, Genos decided to check the convenience store himself.
His shift should have ended by now, why didn't he call me?
Genos arrived at the store to see someone else at the counter instead. When asked the whereabouts of Saitama, the cashier said he got off work half an hour ago and left with the boss.
Fubuki, huh?
He walked out of the store, seething. She played dirty, didn't she? I said I will be getting Saitama home!
Genos didn't walk far when someone called out to him.
"Genos!"
Hope filled Genos's heart with just a word. He immediately turned towards the voice and saw Saitama standing beside an ice-cream stand, a popsicle in his hand. But Genos's smile fell slightly when he saw the person beside him, Fubuki.
Suddenly, he didn't feel like running to Saitama anymore. But that wasn't the problem because Saitama ran up to him then. There was a smile on Saitama's face and for a moment, Genos forgot the existence of the rival nearby.
"Yo, Genos! I got one for you too! Here!"
Saitama offered up his other hand to Genos, revealing another yellow popsicle. Genos accepted it, and felt something weird in his heart again. He felt oddly rejuvenated, as if all worry and fatigue left his body.
Genos didn't know a popsicle would make him feel this way. That, or the person who gave it to him. But Genos didn't have to think hard for the answer.
"I didn't wanna call you, thought you will be busy with work."
There was a pause and Saitama looked a little sheepish as he lightly scratched his cheek, in which Genos's mind automatically responded with, That's kinda cute.
"My phone ran out of battery and I forgot your number. But I knew you would come here when you're done.", Saitama finished cheerfully, then proceeded to enjoy his dessert.
Momentarily distracted by the way Saitama licked the popsicle, Genos cleared his throat and spoke, "S-So you waited for me here? In the cold?"
"Uhuh. It feels nice eating ice cream when it's cold. It doesn't melt as fast. Don't you think so too, Genos?"
Genos would think normal people who feared cool temperatures would disagree but Genos was one of those unbothered by cold, so he opened his mouth to agree when Fubuki walked up to them.
I almost forgot she was there.
Fubuki greeted him with a nod but Genos could clearly see the smirk on her face.
"Alright then, now that you gave him the ice cream, can we leave already?"
What?
"Oh yeah, about that Genos, Fubuki said I'm burdening you a lot with the hospital and all. And I feel kinda bad too. So, you should go home and rest, Genos."
"Yes, thanks for taking care of Saitama, Genos. But I will bring him over to my house now, since his leg doesn't seem to be getting better."
What?
"Well then. Bye Genos!"
Woah, woah, stop right there! What's with going to her house?
Genos blocked their way before they could leave. There were many things he wanted to yell about but they were in the middle of a street.
Instead, Genos civilly said, "Fubuki is a woman, Saitama."
Fubuki, who was standing at the side, had the audacity to giggle at his remark.
Saitama, clueless as ever, replied with, "Er, yeah, that should be obvious, Genos."
Frustrated, Genos tried to explain, "And you're a man, Saitama. That will be inappropriate ."
"It's not a problem because Fubuki is-"
"If that is the case, then you should bring him back to your home instead, Genos.", Fubuki cut in out of nowhere.
"W-What?"
Genos scolded his brain to stop making the same reaction but he couldn't.
"It's decided then. Saitama, I feel relieved to leave you in this gentleman's hands. He seemed so eager after all."
"That's not-", Saitama tried to get a word in again but Fubuki was determined.
"I trust you to not do anything inappropriate to my friend, Genos. I will be off now."
With that, Fubuki left them standing there in quiet shock.
Saitama was the first to recover, "Er, you don't have to listen to her. I-I'm going home now."
But Genos wasn't listening to Saitama anymore, as he dragged him away by the hand, his heart thumping so loud he hoped no one around heard it, especially not Saitama.
"Fubuki's right." Wow, I never thought I would say something like that.
"You shouldn't be left alone without supervision. We can stop by your place to grab your things, then you can stay over for a few days." Genos hoped Saitama didn't hear the trembling in his voice. He wanted to sound final, leaving no place for Saitama to argue.
A whole new wave of happiness hit him when he heard a soft reply from behind him, "O-Okay."
Notes:
We always see Genos following Saitama around and complying to his every word, but I like to think that Saitama can't say no to Genos either.
Chapter Text
The car ride to Genos's home was in awkward silence. They had gone to Saitama's house prior and to the supermarket as well; to grab some groceries and basic necessities.
Genos did not expect this, he certainly did not expect Fubuki to help him and more importantly, Saitama's agreement to follow the plan.
So...Fubuki knew. She knew and she helped me, just like Mumen did. Wait a minute, did Mumen and her plan this?
Genos didn't have the time to think much about it as they reached his house. He helped Saitama with his belongings and the groceries. As Genos unlocked the door and headed in to put down the things, he looked around to see Saitama frozen at the doorway.
"Is there something wrong?"
Saitama didn't answer immediately. He squinted his eyes at the place, his head tilting to a side.
"This place feels familiar. Like I've been here before...Like a deja vu."
Then, Saitama straightened his head again to continue, "But nah, there's no way. I've probably seen it on TV or something."
Is that so?
Genos walked up to Saitama, cornering him against the door. Saitama looked up at him, and Genos could see the confusion back in his eyes.
I didn't expect him to remember our first encounter. Well, he still didn't, not completely. But...should I tell him?
"G-Genos?"
Genos was aware of how close they were standing together, how he was blocking Saitama's only exit. But that wasn't the point now.
"Do you remember, Saitama?"
"Remember what?", Saitama asked in return, clearly getting uncomfortable with the proximity. Yet, he didn't push Genos away, Genos noted.
"It was wrong of me to not tell you the complete truth, but I had no intention in lying to you. We have met before the accident."
"We did?"
"You saved me, right here, from the burglars. You were my grocery shopper before."
Genos could see the realization slowly showing on Saitama's face.
"You, you were that kid! The one tied up! And there was a gun!"
Genos smiled. Took you long enough, Saitama.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier? Now I feel bad for not knowing."
"That's fine. As long as you remember now. That is one more thing I need to thank you for."
"Heh. You are returning the favor, by letting me crash here."
Saitama smiled then and Genos's chest felt tight, like he was short of breath. Suddenly aware of the close distance again, Genos quickly stepped back.
"Y-Yeah."
"Lemme help with dinner then. I will even share my secret recipes with you!"
Saitama had stepped away and into the kitchen, starting already with the groceries. He had helped himself to an apron, on the rack.
Genos wanted to call out to him; to say it was fine, to ask him not to overwork himself. But when he got there, he watched Saitama working on the kitchen island. Genos stood there, leaning against a wall, admiring the view.
I can get used to this, coming home from work, to this.
It was then that Saitama looked up at him, a cheeky grin on his face, "You wanna learn my secret recipes or not?"
Genos returned him with a smile, "I'm coming now.", as he walked into the kitchen and put on a matching apron as well.
It's been too long, since I've felt the warmth of a home.
The dinner was filled with Saitama's corny jokes and Genos felt surprisingly light, as if the accident Saitama had, just a day ago never happened.
Saitama is here, with me, that's all that matters now.
Genos had asked Saitama to go ahead to use the bathroom, as he himself prepared the guest room for Saitama. For once, Genos hated how large his house was and all the extra rooms in it. If he could have it his way, it would be great if they were sleeping close together like they did in Saitama's apartment. But that was too good to be true. And it would be creepy if he told Saitama that.
When Genos came out of the bathroom after Saitama was done, he couldn't find Saitama in the living room. Assuming he was already in bed, he went into the guest room to check but Saitama wasn't there either.
And then he heard it.
The soft note of a piano.
But the music wasn't smooth exactly. Genos could tell the player was a poor beginner, attempting to play a melody.
With his third guess, Genos walked to the common room, technically a vacant room at the end of the hallway. Genos seldom used that room but he knew there was a piano in there, the one that Dr. Kuseno bought him a few years ago as a gift. Back then, Dr. Kuseno learned that Genos used to play the instrument before the incident and was actually decent at it. He gifted it to Genos, hoping he would continue his hobby. It was a well-intentioned gift but Genos didn't enjoy it. It only brought him painful memories.
When Genos opened the door slightly, his guess turned out to be correct. Saitama's back was facing him, as he sat in front of the piano, randomly playing the notes, as if getting hold of the tune.
And then, there was a pause. Saitama took a deep breath, placing his fingers on the keys.
Genos held his breath as well, anticipation filled his heart. Does Saitama know how to play piano as well? He truly is impressive.
Saitama let out a loud exhale and then started to play.
But it was totally different from what Genos expected. Too different.
Saitama was playing with a finger, on the wrong key at that. Yet, Genos could vaguely hear what he was trying to play.
Heart and Soul.
Genos let out a laugh, much to his own surprise, at the obvious mistakes Saitama was playing. An amazing man like Saitama has weaknesses as well.
Saitama must have heard his laughter because he stopped immediately. He turned and jumped a little when he saw Genos by the door.
A blush started blooming on Saitama's face but before Genos could confirm, Saitama turned away.
"S-Sorry. I got bored and saw the piano. Decided to try playing."
Saitama cleared his throat and apologized again, "Sorry I didn't ask."
Genos walked closer and noticed Saitama's ears getting red. There was a giddy feeling starting in Genos's heart as he gazed upon that sight.
"That's okay."
The blush was fading when Saitama asked, "You know how to play?"
Genos nodded. He was never one to show off his skills to anyone, the way some men would play the guitar or drum to impress girls. Yet, the hopeful look on Saitama; as if urging Genos to play for him, was too overwhelming.
So, Genos croaked out, "I could play that piece, if you want."
Saitama didn't answer but he simply scooted over and offered more space for Genos to sit.
Genos sat down and said, "It's been a while since I played, so don't laugh at me."
Saitama still didn't say anything but he did look eager.
A deep breath, his fingers on the piano, and then Genos started playing.
The motor skills came back easily enough, he played a few notes wrong, but Saitama didn't seem to realize, clearly engrossed in the music.
When it was done, there was a moment of silence.
Then, Genos heard it. A soft "Wow" from Saitama.
"When did you learn to play like this?"
Genos normally would refrain from answering, but this was Saitama.
"My mom taught me. When I was younger."
Saitama didn't offer the usual lines others would say; "I'm sorry for your loss." or "I didn't mean to."
Instead, "You played really well. Your mom must be proud."
"You think so?"
"I know so."
It was strange for Genos, just a few lines from Saitama had made him feel so much better, comfortable enough to play again and revisit his memories.
Saitama is right. Playing the piano feels like paying respect to them. I should be proud of the things they taught me.
Genos woke from his thoughts as he felt Saitama's hand on his.
"Teach me?"
Genos refocused his gaze on the person next to him. I should focus on the people who are still here for me, people who care.
"You know, this piece can be a duet."
"Really?"
"Let me show you."
Chapter 23
Notes:
There's a saying, 当局者迷, 旁观者清. It means to say that the spectators see the chess game better than the players themselves.
This is a good representation of the current situation.
Chapter Text
It was the first time Genos saw Saitama laughed out loud like that, and it was because of him. Although Genos took pride in it, it was still rather embarrassing. There they were, standing in the kitchen, an egg successfully flipped onto Genos's head. It was early in the morning, Genos decided to make breakfast for the both of them.
It was just his luck that Saitama witnessed upon his failure.
As soon as Saitama recovered from his laughter, he walked to where Genos stood. He took the pan from his hands, lighting up the fire once again. "Here, lemme show you how it's done."
Genos watched as Saitama skillfully break an egg with only a hand, mixing the ingredients, all while oiling the pan with the other hand. It was like a disciple watching his master doing what he does best, Genos observed.
A little while later, "And it's done!", Saitama said as he proudly presented his dish of omelette. Genos wanted to have a taste but his hand was playfully slapped away.
Saitama smiled at him and reached up to his head to pick at his hair, "Go wash up first, there are still some bits on your hair."
Genos didn't reply, he only watched patiently as Saitama tried to remove the eggshells on his head.
Saitama...please continue making breakfast for me. For the rest of my life.
A moment later, Saitama paused what he was doing, realizing Genos's stare.
Immediately, the moment was over. Genos could be mistaken but he swore he saw panic in Saitama's eyes. Saitama quickly retracted his hand from Genos's head and turned towards the pan.
Genos could see Saitama's ears turned red again. He wanted to ask why but Saitama spoke up.
"G-Go now. I will prepare some side dishes now."
Genos wanted Saitama to continue what he was doing earlier, but it was clear that he had made Saitama uncomfortable. So, Genos complied as he made his way to the bathroom, his mood slightly dampened.
The dream of Saitama making him breakfast every day, for the rest of his life, seemed too far away now, because Saitama didn't stay for another night. No, Saitama didn't even stay another day.
After a somewhat awkward breakfast, Saitama had told Genos he would be leaving when they were drying the plates together. "I should go back to the store today. Mumen said he wouldn't come in until evening."
When Genos opened his mouth to speak, Saitama didn't give him the chance to say a word.
"Don't worry, I'm not overworking myself.", he quickly added, "I will call if I need anything."
Saitama wiped his hands dry with a rag, then reached for his bag on the couch. Genos had failed to take notice of that before; when did Saitama pack up so quickly?
Genos felt it again, the feeling of distance between them growing wider. He recalled the time Saitama avoided him after meeting Amai. This was the exact feeling.
And it was happening again.
And Genos didn't know what to do.
Saitama was already walking to the door, but before he reached for the doorknob, he turned towards Genos.
"I...Thank you for your hospitality, Genos. I will be going now."
He flashed Genos a smile and a moment later, he was already out the door.
Genos stood still, where Saitama had left him. His mind kept replaying the smile, the look in Saitama's eyes.
For the first time since they met, Genos hated Saitama's smile. It wasn't the Tiny Smile, the Playful Smile, the Proud Smile, no, not even the Grateful Smile.
This was different. It felt foreign, forced, fake.
Saitama was pretending, Genos could tell as much. The smile was hostile and frankly speaking, Saitama wasn't the best actor.
He is hiding something...Did I make him so uncomfortable that he had to pretend around me? Did I say something that offended him?
Genos thought long and hard, recalling every single interaction they had since last night. But, Genos couldn't tell what went wrong. Something wasn't adding up. There was something Saitama wasn't telling Genos.
Genos angrily threw the washing rag into the sink, frustrated with the development between them. Deep down, Genos realized, it wasn't anger in his heart.
It was fear.
Fate didn't have to take Saitama away from him, not if Saitama himself was walking away from Genos.
His hands gripped harder at the counter, irrational thoughts making their way into his mind.
As if I would let that happen.
Chapter 24
Notes:
We are reaching the climax soon, but before that, Genos needs to talk to someone for some insight; someone he least expected.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Genos's intuition was right, it was happening again. Saitama was avoiding him, and it was so obvious even Mumen took notice.
The three of them were working in the pet shop on the following Saturday. Saitama had recovered quickly, Genos observed. The limping was gone and Saitama wasn't wincing when he carried things on his shoulder.
Yet, the distance remained. Saitama had excused himself quickly, offering his help to a customer, to deliver the food stock.
Genos hated to be right for this. Saitama is a simple person, he wasn't the kind to play games. If Genos did offend him in some way, he would not hesitate and just call Genos out. But he didn't.
It was true, Genos was angry and frustrated, but more than anything, he was worried. When Genos reached his tipping point, he reached out to Mumen for help.
Mumen contemplated for a while but didn't provide an answer to ease Genos's worry.
"Not you too, Mumen! What the hell did I do wrong?!"
Mumen stood up to face Genos, placing a hand on his shoulder to placate him.
"You did nothing wrong, Genos."
As Mumen pulled back his hand from Genos's shoulder, Genos noticed that he looked noticeably troubled, as if confused about something.
"To be completely honest with you, Genos, I don't know."
"How could you not know? You're his best friend!"
"That I am, but it doesn't mean I can see through his every action. Besides, Saitama never talks about feelings."
Genos slumped down into a chair against the wall. What should I do now?
As if noticing his distress, King walked up to him and rested its head on his knee, trying to comfort him. Genos reached out to pat its head, grateful for the cheer up.
"Saitama isn't the kind to give cold treatments. He will say it in your face if you did do something wrong. And I am very sure he likes you...so I wonder why he ac-"
Suddenly, there was a knock at the backroom's door, shocking the two of them out of the conversation. The door then opened wide to show Genos a face he didn't expect to see.
Garou.
"I knocked this time!", Garou's voice rang loud and clear in the room, though his expression told Genos he was a little embarrassed. Was it because of the misunderstanding last time?
"Garou! Why are you here?", Mumen asked as he walked towards him; his face lit up instantly upon seeing his boyfriend.
"I..", Garou cleared his throat, shyly avoiding Mumen's gaze, "It was a coincidence. I was taking a walk around the area after going to the dojo. Thought I dropped by...to see you."
Genos watched as Mumen tilted his head to a side, confusion on his face.
"But your dojo is at the other end of the city, Garou?"
Garou's eyes widen a fraction, knowing he got caught about his lie and Genos smirked at the idiocy.
Guess I still have to be the matchmaker then.
"He's here because he misses you, Mumen. No sane man would take a detour around the entire city just for a walk."
"W-What the fuck you saying?! It's my fucking choice to w-"
Mumen reached to grab Garou's hand, effectively silencing him.
"I missed you too, Garou. I'm really happy you're here."
Blood rushed towards Garou's face but he tried to act casual as he rubbed his neck with the other arm.
"So, you free for dinner tonight later?"
"Ah yes. I need to clear up some documents at the counter first. Can you wait for a while? It won't take too long."
Garou nodded obediently. "I will wait in here for you then."
"Okay." Mumen let go of his boyfriend's hand to walk out to the front of the shop, leaving Garou and Genos alone.
Genos stared as Garou watched Mumen leave, like a puppy watching its owner leave for work. Genos could almost imagine Garou's tail wagging excitedly for Mumen to return.
"There's no need to be so dramatic. He will be back in like 10 minutes or something."
Garou turned to look at him at that remark, his scowl back on his face. "I'm not gonna argue with you. Mumen wouldn't like that."
"But you just did just now."
"You fu-", Garou stopped himself quick. He took a deep breath, a pause, then he continued, "Mumen said you were the one to help him discover his feelings for me. And you helped us get together."
Genos didn't answer. It surprised him to think that Mumen thought so highly of him. He felt a little proud to be able to help his friend achieve such happiness. But why can't I do that for my own relationship?
"Oi! Are you even listening? I am taking the initiative to say thank you here!"
Ah, Genos must have missed hearing that as he wallowed in self-pity. Though he felt the need to tease the childish man, "What, like it's hard?"
But it surprised Genos when Garou didn't get angry at his provocation. Instead, Garou looked uneasy.
"I-I'm trying okay?"
"What? It was just a jok-"
"I had difficulty connecting with people. For a very long time." Another pause. "But it's important for me to say this. I'm grateful for what you did for Mumen and I."
"...Mumen is very important to you, isn't he?"
"Yes."
Genos was a little taken aback by the look of seriousness in Garou's eyes when he answered. He felt the urge to know, despite it having nothing to do with him.
"What happened?"
Garou didn't look bothered by the question. Rather, he just answered. "Had a rebellious stage. Fucked up real bad. But Mumen ...was there. To help. He stayed when no one else did."
An ugly thought made its way into Genos's mind. He hoped he was wrong.
"And you want to repay him? For what you did?"
"Yeah. Of course."
This wasn't what Genos wanted to hear. "Then, aren't you just grateful to him? Like hero worship?"
Genos realized he was saying the exact same thing Mumen asked him. But he had to be sure. He didn't want Mumen to be hurt. If there were no feelings, it would be pointless.
"Huh? Hell no! I wouldn't want to bring him to dates to make him smile or felt jealous when I saw you with him or wanting to fuck him into the be-"
Garou stopped himself a little too late this time. He had made his intentions very clear. But Genos was glad that he was wrong. He was glad Garou was sincere, albeit a little too honest.
"I-I mean, yeah. Of course I can differentiate between a crush and an actual like. I'm not stupid."
Genos smiled. So he is smarter than me, in this aspect.
"Oh, how about you and Saitama?"
Genos stared at him, slightly astonished. Garou really wasn't stupid. Oh well, might as well just tell him.
"He's avoiding me...I don't know why."
"Ah, the stage of denial."
"What?"
"It's to be expected tho, I mean Saitama is timid after all."
"Saitama is not timid! He is a brave man wh-"
"I don't mean that way. Wait, what's the word? Confidence? No, not that. I don't know how to say it, but... I mean look at you! Look at him! You get it?"
Genos didn't like where this was going but he still asked, "What do you mean?"
"You two don't match."
The words repeated over and over in Genos's mind, he heard Saitama himself said it before.
"In looks, in education, in wealth. It's obvious. Saitama wants you to have better."
Genos looked at Garou this time. I really misjudged him . "How are you so sure?"
"Coz I was the same. With Mumen. I know I don't deserve him...But I didn't give up, coz I want him. Turns out Mumen felt the same way too. Said I'm rich and young and full of potential and all. Fuck that shit! I ain't letting go if I know Mumen likes me too!"
"...I'm not giving up too.", Genos mumbled to himself.
"Say what?"
"I said I'm not giving up on Saitama too!", Genos said resolutely.
Garou smiled at him, "That's the spirit!"
Genos had a realization that Garou was cheering him up, in a weird way, but it worked. He wanted to say thank you but Mumen entered the room then.
"I'm done, Garou. Ah Genos, I think I will close the shop now. Thanks for your work today!"
Genos stood to leave but there was only one remaining question left to ask. "Mumen, who's Fubuki to you and Saitama?"
But instead of Mumen answering, Garou cut in, "Fubuki? Isn't she your roommate?"
"Yeah. We are old friends from way back. Why do you ask, Genos?"
"She's your roommate?" And Garou is okay with that too?
Garou seemed to hear his other question too because he answered, "You know there is a thing called platonic friendship right?"
For the third time this entire evening, Genos reminded himself that Garou really, really wasn't dull.
Notes:
So, technically Saitama would have been staying over with Mumen and Fubuki.
Anyways, Garou is right. Platonic friendship between a male and a female is possible!
Btw, did you all see the new animation Murata sensei made?! Go check it out if you haven't! It's soooo goood!
Chapter 25
Notes:
I have planned a total of seven part-time jobs for Saitama. This is the last one. Are you keeping count too?
Slight warning: There's a reason why the Mature rating was used. Things will get dark for a moment.

Chapter Text
"Hello?"
There was music blasting in the background on the other end of the phone; it was so loud even Genos had to move his phone further away from his ear.
"Yo, Genos-kun!"
The voice sounded obnoxiously familiar, Genos almost regretted picking up his call.
"Suiryu.", he addressed coldly.
The voice on the opposite laughed. "I didn't expect you to pick up. An unknown number to a CEO. Chances are low."
"This is my private number. How did you get it?"
"Garou passed it to me."
Genos grimaced. And I thought he is smart.
Suiryu continued when he didn't reply, "Don't be mad. I do have a serious matter to tell you."
Then, the music seemed muted, as if Suiryu had moved to somewhere more private to speak. "Tell me, Genos-kun, how serious are you towards Saitama?"
Frowning, Genos asked, "What is that supposed to mean?"
"I thought you caught him already. Are you done playing with him now?"
"What? "
"If you are done, give him to me. Let me have a turn too."
"What the fuck are you saying?"
"You and I... We are not so different, are we? Don't get me wrong, Saitama is a very rare toy, but it's not weird if you are tired of it now."
Genos gripped his phone tighter, until he heard a crack but that was the least of his concern.
"I'm just being courteous, it's common decency to ask before taking someone's else toys.", the taunting continued. Genos never felt such dark rage before, it consumed his entire mind and body. He craved to hurt someone now.
"If you even dare to touch him, I wi-"
"Someone already is."
What?
The phone cut off right after. What the FUCK?!
Genos didn't wait, he immediately called Saitama.
Please answer. Please pick up.
He didn't. The call went to voicemail instead.
Where is he? What is happening? Who is he with? Is he in danger?
The answers came soon enough; in the form of an image. It was sent by Suiryu.
Saitama was in it. But Genos was not relieved.
What the hell is he wearing? Who the fuck is that?!
In the picture, Saitama was practically half-naked, topless with unbelievably tight, black pants. Is that a ball of fur on his butt?
His suspicions were confirmed when Genos noticed the fluffy ears on his head. A bunny outfit. Saitama looked...cute and sexy. Genos's brain couldn't decide which was which.
Stop! Down boy! Now's not the time!
Sure, Genos had seen Saitama undress to change clothes (No, he wasn't staring ) but it was never like this. Saitama had always been fit, muscularly lean, and he wasn't even trying; those muscles were thanks to his heavy part-time works.
But that was not the point now. Genos couldn't be distracted by the body, not when Saitama was standing so close to someone else in the picture. And a fully naked person at that!
Saitama was smiling , as he helped to wrap bandages around the other man's head. What the...?
The stranger's face couldn't be seen, his back facing the camera.
But that wasn't even the weirdest part. Which was bizarre.
At a corner, sitting at their table were Fubuki and Mumen. Fubuki was wearing something skimpy and too revealing. Mumen wasn't much better either, as he sported the similar outfit as Saitama, though slightly more covered, in a tight vest.
Genos's mind didn't even have the time to process the ordeal, when Suiryu sent him another message.
M Club. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Genos stood outside the club, his mind suspiciously blank now that he was here. It was weird, there were so many things he wanted to ask before.
Say, for example, what the actual fuck is going on? Is this some kind of prank? I didn't know that they are the sort of people who go to clubs. This is a side of them I have never witnessed before. Hang on. Should I tell Garou too? Did he know about this?
All questions and no answers, Genos prepared himself to enter.
The first thing he registered was the irritatingly loud music again. It was so crowded in there but slowly fizzled out as he went in deeper. This is not the place Saitama would go, what is he doing here?
Suiryu must have been here before, if he was the one who took the picture. Genos looked around, searching for familiar faces.
That was when he saw it.
Something in Genos snapped then. As if a switch was flipped on.
Saitama was serving drinks at a table, his body slightly tilted forward to put down the drinks. The two men in tank tops were ogling hungrily, like Saitama was a feast.
Genos corrected himself mentally , he is a feast, but he is my feast. Genos hated it, the fact that other people could see this side of Saitama, before himself.
One of the men, had his hand raised, not stealthily, trying to feel a grope. But Genos was already there before it made contact with Saitama's bottom.
Genos grabbed Saitama by the waist, startling the other with a gasp. He proceeded to pour the drinks on the two men's heads. Then, he dropped a stack of cash on the table.
"As compensation. From now on, don't touch what's not yours.", Genos said, deceptively calm, when his heart was bursting with rage.
The two men were too shocked to give a proper response and Genos didn't wait for long as he whisked Saitama away with him. The other patrons in the club were staring, but nothing else mattered for Genos.
He didn't stop until they were out of the club, out of sight from everyone else; in a secluded back alley of some shops.
Genos finally turned to look at Saitama then, as he let go of him. Saitama's face was beet red, out of embarrassment or shyness, Genos couldn't be sure.
Frankly, though, he didn't care. Genos didn't know who else Saitama had shown that face to, how many others who fell into the trap, how many others who couldn't control themselves and take Saitama and proceed to fuck him against the wall.
Genos didn't want to think about that. He wasn't sure if he could take it anymore.
He was angry but most of all, he was hurt, by Saitama's actions. He was tired, very tired of his nonchalance, his not-caring personality. Genos was exhausted, to constantly chase after him.
Saitama was testing him, wasn't he? One hurdle after another? He had made Genos cared for him, worried for him, fell for him so hard Genos didn't think there could be anyone else but Saitama.
Giving up? Not at all. But I should just tie him up, lock him away from anyone else. Wouldn't that be much easier? Maybe then he will finally understand my feelings. Is that crazy? Not at all. Not if he can finally be mine.
"Achoo!"
The sneeze broke his train of thought. Genos refocused his gaze on Saitama. He didn't know how long they had been standing there, in the middle of the night, during the end of the autumn season.
He really is dumb, huh? Who else on earth will be stupid enough to stand here, not saying a word?... He probably doesn't even know what I want to do with him. Will he even know if I just kidnap him?
Genos chuckled humorlessly at his own thoughts. He will probably just ask where we will be going.
"G-Genos?"
Genos stared down at Saitama, who was shivering in cold now. There was a hint of fear in Saitama's eyes. Genos found himself enjoying the look of fright on Saitama. It makes him even cuter like this.
"I-I should go back."
Saitama was about to move away when Genos moved forward to block his way. He advanced and Saitama had no choice but to keep moving back, until his back hit the wall.
The shorter man squeaked in shock upon the contact against the cold concrete. He looked up to Genos again, panic clear in his expression now.
It was comical to Genos, then, as the situation fully dawned on him. If only I was this aggressive from the beginning, he wouldn't have dared to run away from me. So this is what it feels like to finally have caught him.
"Where do you think you're going?", Genos asked, his voice eerily composed.
"B-Back to work?", Saitama shifted uncomfortably, "Genos, this is a bit weir-"
"What for? To be touched by someone else?"
Saitama's expression shifted a little, somehow annoyed. "It's my part-time jo-"
"How much are they paying you? I will give double, no, I can give you a hundred times more." Then, let me fuck you too.
"Huh?!"
Saitama's mood changed completely then. He looked offended.
"Are you making fun of me now? Do you think it's funny to see a person working hard for money?"
Genos was stunned by the sudden change in the atmosphere.
Saitama muttered angrily under his breath but Genos heard him due to how close they stood, "You don't even know who I work so hard for."
"What?" What?
A look of determination replaced on Saitama's face again.
"Ah, screw it! I like you, Genos! I like you a lot! But I know I'm not good enough. I'm not rich enough. I'm not smart enough. I'm not even attractive! But I'm working on it! I will work very hard! I will earn enough money to impress you! So, until then, don't make fun of me! Don't look down on my feelings!"
Genos stood there, processing. All the crazy thoughts he was thinking disappeared. This was the longest speech he heard from Saitama, way over his 20- words rule. And it was for a confession.
Saitama...confessed. To me. He confessed to me. He shouted his confession. It was a confession. H-
"I-I'm sorry if I disgusted you or something. You should reject me clearly now. I just wanna say it, I don't want to regret anything."
Saitama wasn't looking at him in the eye, in fact, he was trembling, from cold or nerves or fear, Genos didn't know anymore.
Genos couldn't reply, not for the life of him, his voice just wouldn't come out.
Tired of waiting in embarrassment, Saitama tried to move away; to get out of there.
Genos wouldn't let him go though, not anymore.
He grabbed Saitama by the face and kissed him then.
Notes:
*clears throat ...So, er, yeah.
You all can guess who the other man is, right?

Chapter Text
Cold.
That was the first sensation that registered on Genos's mind about the kiss. Huh, weird, people always say kisses are supposed to be warm.
Genos pulled back for a moment. Saitama's eyes were still closed, his lips slightly apart; as if waiting for more.
Smiling, Genos complied. The second kiss was warmer, softer. Genos heard a soft moan from Saitama, as he slowly slipped in his tongue.
This feels...nice.
Genos found himself enjoying it more now. No, he was no expert, nor was he a good kisser. This was his first kiss after all. But it had felt so good and Saitama must have felt the same too, as he let out small gasps in between the kisses. He clung on to Genos's coat, desperate to get closer. Genos moved his hands from Saitama's face, slowly caressing his neck, then lower to his back... And immediately stopped.
Genos broke the kiss suddenly, stunning Saitama. Saitama's face was flushed red but now that Genos thought about it, it wasn't because of the kiss.
"G-Genos?", Saitama asked, a little out of breath, he looked confused and eager for more.
No, now's not the time. Stay down!, Genos scolded himself.
It was then, Saitama sneezed a second time.
"I'm sorry!", Genos shouted, as he quickly took off his coat to put on the half-naked Saitama.
You horny dumbass, Saitama is cold, what if he gets sick, what if it gets serious, like hypothermia?, Genos mentally berated himself.
Genos took Saitama's hands into his, breathing warm air and rubbed more heat into them. "I'm sorry, I should have given you the coat before, I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention."
But when Genos looked at Saitama, he was smiling. An innocent smile, a childish one. Like a kid just given his favorite candy.
Saitama tiptoed a little, kissing him gently on the cheek. "Thank you, Genos."
It was Genos's turn to freeze, though not in cold. So that's what love does to a person.
He hugged Saitama then. Genos didn't like how cold Saitama's body felt, but he would warm him up soon enough.
"I'm sorry if I was avoiding you.", Saitama spoke softly, against Genos's chest. "Mumen scolded me, that it wasn't right. Fubuki said I should just confess. Zombieman told me to just face it. And be ready for rejection."
"There's no way I will reject you. I'm in love with you, Saitama. For a very long time now."
Saitama looked up to him then, in the eyes, to check if Genos was lying or something. Apparently, he was satisfied with whatever he found because he fell back into Genos's embrace again to mumble, "Well, this was embarrassing."
Genos smiled at the shy Saitama. But then, something came up. "Wait, who's Zombieman?"
"Hm? A friend? He's one of the pet store's bosses. I thought I told you."
Hang on a sec.
"So, who are the bosses again?"
"Mumen, Fubuki, Zombieman and me."
"... You never told me that, Saitama. Are there any other friends I should know about?"
"Huh? What do you mean?", Saitama moved away from his hold, much to Genos's dismay, to look at him again.
Genos cleared his throat, suddenly feeling ridiculous.
"Y-You know, Suiryu sent me a picture, of you all. That was why I'm here."
"Uhuh, and?", Saitama stared eyes wide at Genos; he genuinely didn't understand.
While it was true they had both confessed and feelings were delivered across, Saitama's obliviousness was still a constant.
So, Genos decided to just show the image instead.
But Saitama didn't react the way he expected. No, it wasn't embarrassment nor was it guilt.
Saitama actually laughed.
"I didn't know Suiryu took one in there! Look at Fubuki's face!"
"...Do you want to explain to me what's going on?"
Saitama looked confused and asked, "Wh-"
"Why don't you explain to me what you think it meant."
They both turned to look at the other end of the alley, towards the owner of the voice.
"Yo, Z!"
So this is the naked man with the bandages. Zombieman huh?
Well, he wasn't naked anymore. The man was dressed in a trenchcoat with black pants and tall boots. He looked exceptionally pale, just like in the picture. His dead-looking eyes were staring straight at Genos, as he let off a puff of smoke from the cigarette.
Then, he shifted his gaze towards Saitama, the hard look in his eyes instantly soften. ...Huh.
"Fubuki's complaining that you went slacking off."
"Ah, about that...", Saitama said quietly, as he scratched his cheek awkwardly.
"So this was the guy you talking about?"
"Huh? Ah yeah. Er, Z, this is Genos. Genos, meet Zombieman."
Genos looked cautiously at the pale man, "Is that your real name?"
Zombieman smirked, "You don't wanna know my real name." He turned to Saitama, eyeing the coat on him with distaste. "You should get back in there. Mumen can't handle them all."
"Oh okay.", Saitama replied, as he removed Genos's coat to hand it back but Genos wouldn't allow that, as he grabbed Saitama's hand in his.
"Saitama will not work here anymore. I'm not letting perverts touch my lover."
Saitama's face redden instantly, most likely surprised at the term of endearment.
"You have a possessive one, Sai." Zombieman dropped his cigarette on the ground, lightly stepping on it; to put it out. "But work is work."
Genos frowned at him. But Saitama appeared to be agreeing as he released himself off Genos's hold.
"It's fine, Genos. I can handle it." No, you can't. You are too defenseless at these things.
If anything, Saitama was stubborn. Genos wanted to go after him but was blocked by Zombieman.
Genos stared eye-to-eye at him, clearly irritated.
"You're too controlling.", Zombieman remarked.
"What?"
"I know what you're thinking. But Sai said it himself, he can handle it. He's been taking care of himself for years before you even met."
"You're right but that was before. I'm here now. So, I will do what I have to do to protect him from now on."
Zombieman didn't reply, as he casually leaned against a wall, lighting up his second cigarette.
"...So why were you naked? And what happened to your head?", Genos couldn't help but to ask. Saitama's friends truly were getting weirder and weirder.
"You really want to know everything, huh?"
"Everything about Saitama, yes."
"It's a gig we got from Suiryu. It's his club after all.", Zombieman took a puff and continued, "It's kind of a fun thing to do with friends. Play dress up and get paid."
Zombieman turned to look at Genos, saw his expression, and laughed, "I assure you it's not a common thing. Sai gets crazy when he's drunk after all."
"...So, you know too."
"What, you jealous? Thinking he was kissing someone else?"
Genos didn't reply. Instead, he opted to clench his fist tighter; he didn't want to hit someone out of anger.
But Zombieman only laughed again, further irritating Genos. "This is fun."
He had finished his second cigarette again then.
"Well, break time's over. It was nice talking to you."
He was getting ready to leave, when he turned to say to Genos, "That was his first kiss just now, you know. Can't believe you're going at it at this kind of place, thought you'll be more romantic."
"W-What?"
"Be gentle with him, when you're taking his first."
At that, Zombieman walked casually back to the club; leaving Genos alone, flabbergasted in the back alley.
Notes:
Littering cigarette butts everywhere is wrong. But Zombieman is hot, so I will allow that, in a fic.
I'm bias to him...so he will have a cameo here.
Chapter Text
Genos liked to think that he didn't overreact. He liked to think he was composed after hearing it all from Zombieman. But the rapid heartbeat, the sweaty palms, and constant pacing around wasn't fooling anyone.
First kiss? That was his first kiss?! But I thought...the drunk moments, what happened then?... But Zombieman had no reason to lie to me.
Genos couldn't stop the smile from blooming on his face. He felt so happy he could hardly breathe. Saitama had told him he liked him, and they were hugging, then they kissed. All of this was too much to be processed.
So, we are lovers now, aren't we? I can constantly be close to him now, freely hug him whenever I want to, kiss him...and do things to him.
Immediately, Genos shook himself off of the dirty thoughts. No, not yet, I want to make him be comfortable enough with me first. I'm not going to scare him away. I don't want him to be afraid of me.
Genos thought of what he had in mind before the confession; the disturbing things he had wanted to do to Saitama. What the heck was I thinking?!
...But it had been his real thoughts. The idea of Saitama being with someone else had angered him so much, he actually would resort to such extreme actions. Saitama had woken a part in him, something not necessarily nice, something terribly dominating and predatory. Even Genos feared the overwhelming feelings he had. What if Saitama hadn't confessed then? What if he did do something to hurt Saitama?
I shouldn't let Saitama see this part of me, that will truly scare him off. He would come to hate me, he would regret this, he would want to break up, he would want to leave. He-
"Oi! Genos! You deaf or what now?"
Shocked out of his thoughts, Genos looked up to see Garou in front of him, in the back alley.
"Garou? What are you doing here?"
"That fucker Suiryu sent me a picture. I'm looking for Mumen. Why the hell you standing here?"
Genos looked closely at Garou, observing him. He looked pissed, very pissed. But the frown also showed a hint of worry. Did I look like that too just now?
When Genos didn't immediately answer him, Garou paced around, his hand grabbing his hair anxiously. "That asshole Suiryu! If I see him, I will fucking kill him!"
He turned to look at Genos again then, as if he remembered something suddenly, "Hang on a sec. If Mumen's here, Saitama should be too! Let's go, Genos! We need to fuck things up!"
Then, something clicked in Genos's mind. ...Suiryu really is an asshole.
"Wait, Garou. I think I know what's going on." Genos proceeded to tell Garou what Suiryu had sent to him too, and their weird gig in the club.
"That fu-", Garou stopped himself for a moment, seemingly thinking. "Why did he do it? What the hell was he trying to achieve?"
Genos thought for a moment. "Based on his personality, I don't think he was thinking of that."
"Huh?"
"He's doing this just for his own amusement."
"WHA-"
"Calm down, Garou.", Genos gritted his teeth, unhappy with what he was about to say, but it was the mature thing to do, "They are adults, they can protect themselves."
Garou didn't burst out to argue with him, which confused Genos. So, he looked up to see Garou's expression. Garou didn't have to say it, because it was clear on his face, ' What the fuck is wrong with you?'
"What?", Genos asked, frowning as well.
"Are you saying that because we are younger? Coz that's fucking stupid. I don't know about you, but I'm going in to find my boyfriend."
"But it's their job. They sh-"
"I don't care about that! Call me childish! Call me clingy! I don't want anyone else to see Mumen like that but myself!"
Genos widened his eyes in surprise. Garou was unexpectedly honest with what he wanted. And what he wanted, was similar to Genos, he just wanted Saitama all to himself.
"You...", Genos cleared his throat and tried again, "You don't think that's selfish?"
Garou walked closer and squinted his eyes to look at him, as if trying to understand something.
"You are afraid." He stepped back then, to lean against the wall beside Genos and continued, "I didn't take you as a coward."
Genos grimaced, feeling pathetic that Garou was able to see right through him. "I just don't want to lose him. If there comes a day when he will hate me, I...I don't think I can accept it. I think I might do very bad things to make him stay."
There was a moment of silence. Maybe Garou thought I finally lost it.
But Garou did answer. "It's not right, but it's understandable. You're insecure. But Saitama doesn't strike me as someone who changes his heart so easily." Garou scratched his head, as if uncomfortable to say more but he still did, "I know what it feels like, but a person who truly loves you will accept the worst part of you too. Just like Mumen did to me."
Garou stood up straight again, and resolutely said, "That's why I'm going in to see him. If it's for work, so be it! I will support him but I'm staying close to keep assholes away." He walked a few meters before turning back to face Genos, "Well, are you coming or not?"
The club was still loud the second time Genos went in, but the feeling of going in there was different now. It wasn't to doubt or to fear, it was to protect someone who belongs to Genos. Somehow or rather, the talk with Garou had made him feel lighter, better. Garou was right, Genos can trust Saitama to stay loyal.
If Genos thought carefully about it, Saitama was never one to put in the effort if he didn't care. But Saitama did so, for Genos. He worked hard to earn money, in order to impress Genos. He took the courage to confess, and prepared to be rejected. Saitama loves him. What else was Genos asking for?
The moment they found Mumen at the bar, Garou had rushed there to meet him. Genos followed suit, but stayed a little further away; curious about how Garou would react.
"Garou? You shouldn't be here!", Mumen said disapprovingly.
"Huh? Why not? I can't even meet my boyfriend now?"
"No, that's not it. This club is strictly for 21 and above. Didn't they ask for your ID when you entered?"
Oh, that's what Mumen's worried about huh.
"No? I look old enough. It's just a year short, it doesn't matter. Hold on, that's not why I'm here for! I-"
"That is still not right! You are not allowed to drink yet! I will get you some orange juice instead."
Mumen was already turning away before Garou get to say anything else. But Garou must have seen something else because he immediately shut his mouth, his face brightened up like a tomato.
Finding his reaction odd, Genos followed Garou's point of view to see what he was staring at.
Oh.
Well, in Garou's defense, the bunny outfit was really erotic. And the small ball of fur at the back was too tempting to ignore.
But the view wasn't for long, because Mumen turned around again. And true to his words, he brought Garou a glass of orange juice. "Here, Garou. Oh, and you were saying, why are you here?"
Genos turned to stare at Garou then, but it seemed that all the rage and frustration were out of his system. Genos smirked at his observation. He may be a terrifying wolf to everyone else, but in front of Mumen, he's turned into a puppy.
"I-I came to check on you. I heard you are working in a club."
Mumen smiled gently at Garou, a soft expression on his face; one Genos had never seen before. It must be reserved for Garou alone. Suddenly, Genos felt like he was intruding on an intimate moment.
"Are you worried for me, Garou?"
Garou didn't reply but simply nodded, his gaze on his glass of juice.
Mumen reached forward then, to plant a kiss on Garou's forehead. "I'm sorry to make you feel that way. But thank you for being here." He reached for Garou's hand on the counter, "Do you trust me, Garou?"
Garou didn't wait for a second to reply, so sure of the answer, to say, "Yes."
"Then, there's no need to worry. Because you're the only one I have my eyes on too. Okay?"
Although Genos was observing them a few meters away, Garou's compliance was obvious to see. He was completely taken by Mumen already. "Okay."
"Then, wait for me here? The shift is almost over now."
"Alright."
Mumen moved away to serve other customers then, and Genos took the cue to join Garou.
"Someone told me he's coming in to keep assholes away.", Genos teased.
"I am. Can't you see I'm guarding here?"
"With that glass of orange juice? Yeah, sure. Very intimidating."
"Fuck you! Go bother Saitama! I'm busy keeping watch here!"
Genos smiled then, "I'm watching since I entered."
"Huh? Then, where is he?"
Genos passed his phone towards Garou to look at the screen. On it, were the security cameras of the entire club, following Saitama's whereabouts.
Garou looked at him, stunned, "How the fu-?"
"Technology is my strong suit.", Genos said easily, like that explained everything. But Garou didn't ask more about it. Rather, he said, "You don't want to burden Saitama directly huh. So, you chose to do it from a distance."
Genos didn't reply but they both knew Garou was right. Genos didn't want Saitama to be upset, so he will try extra hard from now on. He wanted to make Saitama fall deeper in love with him, so much so that one day, he wouldn't be burdened by Genos's love and willingly stay by his side.
One day.

Chapter Text
Genos was there, waiting when Saitama came out by the back door. He was no longer in the bunny outfit but back in his signature hoodie and pants. Saitama was blushing the moment he noticed Genos, but he was smiling to greet him. He turned to wave goodbye to his friends before running up to meet with Genos. Genos could see Garou escorting Mumen home while Zombieman accompanied Fubuki. He did wonder about the nature of their relationship, about Zombieman and Fubuki, but that didn't matter anymore because the person in front of him now, was Saitama. It was only natural for Genos to give Saitama his full attention.
"Genos, did you wait for long?"
"No. I don't mind." I don't mind anything at all, if it's for you.
"Then, let's grab supper together. I know a ramen place around here."
Genos nodded, as he took off his coat, to once again put on Saitama. "The weather is getting colder now, you should not wear so thinly."
It was then Genos noticed Saitama was looking away and there was a deep blush, spreading from his cheeks to his ears. Genos finally understood now. Avoiding eye contact, the reddening ears, these were the clues he had missed.
"How long ago since you liked me, Saitama?", Genos blurted out, surprising even himself. He mentally slapped himself for speaking his thoughts out loud.
Saitama scratched his cheek, a sign of being nervous that Genos began to take notice of, before answering, "Er, I don't really know for sure actually."
Genos smiled at the answer, which was typical of Saitama. "It's okay. When, where, and how doesn't really matter." Just stay in love with me.
Saitama nodded, but he asked something else, "Can we, er, actually nevermind.", before giving up in the end.
But Genos wasn't letting it go so easily. Communication was the key after all. He didn't want to count the lost opportunities he missed with Saitama simply because they didn't talk. Not anymore. Things will change from now on.
So, Genos went on to grab Saitama's hand, asking him, "Tell me."
Saitama was staring at their connected hands now before smiling at Genos, "You are doing it already."
"Huh? What?"
"I wanted to ask to hold hands."
"Oh." Genos did the stupid thing then, as he immediately let go of his hand.
The reaction was instant, Saitama's smiling face dropped along with the hand contact. Saitama took a step back, fidgetting with his now free fingers. "S-sorry. It's too soon right? I won't ask for such things then."
Shit. How do I even fuck up holding hands?
Genos took the step forward, closing their distance again. "No. You should ask for them! Anytime, every time you want them!", Genos exclaimed as he reached out to Saitama's hands again.
But the moment was already ruined, because Saitama took another step back again, avoiding his grip. "It's fine. I'm sorry for making this awkward. L-Let's go get supper now!", Saitama said with false cheerfulness as he walked ahead.
Fuck! I messed up. And we just confessed like an hour ago!
Genos wasn't having any of it as he sped up to hug Saitama from behind.
"G-Genos?!"
"I'm sorry I messed up. I have never dated anyone before. I don't know what I'm supposed to do, what I'm not supposed to do. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore! I'm sorry. But please, please don't step away from me. Please don't be mad at me!"
"Huh?"
"Please don't break up with me!"
"What?!", Saitama released himself from the hug then and for a moment, Genos thought his worst fear had come true.
But Saitama grabbed him by the face, and looked up straight into his eyes then. "Why would I break up with you for that? It's not even been a day that we dated!"
Saitama stopped talking for a moment to mumble to himself, "Hang on, no. That came out wrong. That sounded like we will be breaking up later." Then, he looked up at Genos again, "No, that wasn't what I meant! If anything, I thought you will be dumping me, not the other way around!"
"Huh? What does that mean?"
"I thought you are dating me out of kindness. You know, coz I'm pathetic. Then, you will dump me sooner or later when it's over."
At that, Genos had enough. He grabbed the hands on his face, to place them on his chest. Saitama tried to struggle, "Hey, wh-?"
"Feel my heartbeat? Will it beat that fast if I was pretending? I wouldn't kiss someone out of kindness! I wouldn't hold their hands or hug them! I wouldn't even spare them a glance if I had no feelings for them! So don't ever doubt my feelings for you! I won't make fun of your feelings so please take mine seriously too!"
Saitama's eyes grew wider at Genos's confession. "So, it wasn't out of pity?", Saitama asked, his voice impossibly soft, like he was scared to know the answer.
Genos knew words failed to convince Saitama so he did what he wanted to do the entire night; kissing Saitama again.
It was a different sensation this time. It was more affectionate rather than desperate, more gentle rather than being rough. There can be different types of kissing too huh. I want to try them all with Saitama.
Slowly, Genos let go reluctantly, releasing Saitama of his embrace; only to see tears in Saitama's eyes.
What?! What?! No, no, don't cry. Fuck. Please don't cry. Whatever the hell I do is wrong? Please stop crying. I'd rather die than making you cry.
"Saitama?"
But Saitama was crouching down now, his face hidden behind his arms. Genos kneeled in front of him, no longer knowing what to do.
"I-It's nothing. I'm just very happy now. I-I need a minute.", Saitama said, his voice muffled.
Genos's heart finally stopped squeezing in pain. He reached forward to hold Saitama in his arms again, albeit in a less comfortable way, but Genos wasn't complaining. Not at all.
"I'm sorry you have to see this side of me. I don't usually cry like this. I don't cry at all. This is weird. I'm getting weird.", Saitama was rambling now, something very out of character for him, but unbelievably adorable for Genos to see.
"That's okay. I want to see every side of you. Show them all to me." Only to me.
There was a long pause until Genos heard a very quiet, "Okay."
It was another ten minutes of sitting on the cold, hard ground when Genos heard a stomach growling. Genos smiled, as he whispered to Saitama's red ears, "Let's go eat ramen now, shall we?"
"Okay."
Notes:
First loves are almost always weird, awkward, painful but unbelievably sweet. They are each other's firsts, so please forgive their stupidity.
Even holding hands is a difficult task for them.
Chapter Text
Genos expected a lot of things would be different after they started dating but surprisingly, it didn't. They still hang out like they used to and worked together in the pet store. The subtle differences now though, were the tiny smiles Saitama showing him more when they made eye contact, and the casual touches they shared. Genos found himself getting used to these small, special treatments reserved only for him. They made him feel, well, special.
Although Genos's ranking in making Saitama smile had risen up to the second place, he was still behind one annoying cat; Sonic. But Genos realized he didn't mind as much anymore. Because Sonic wouldn't be able to do the things he did with Saitama. He wouldn't be able to hug him, kiss him, hold him.
While Genos poured the kibbles into the bowl for Sonic and Flashy Flash, Sonic stared annoyingly at Genos before turning to its food.
Mumen, who was watching the entire ordeal, made a comment, "He's tolerating you."
Genos turned back to see Mumen by the door, staring at them. In his arms, Mumen was holding the angry chihuahua, Charanko. Garou must have dropped it off here before going to his dojo to practice. Now that Genos had built a weird friendship with him, Genos learned that Garou was aiming to be a martial artist as well, like Suiryu. Garou had done some rebelling stuff when he was younger, going from dojos to dojos to pick fights. But he had grown out of that phase now. Nowadays, he learned under his master, Bang, to be even stronger. Genos had a feeling about it, that Garou would do well, one day even surpassing Suiryu and his master. But Genos wasn't going to tell Garou that, that jerk was arrogant enough already. Well, other than to Mumen, that was.
"What?", Genos asked.
"Cats are unusually possessive, of their territories, of their favorite humans. But Sonic is compromising. He's willing to share Saitama with you.", Mumen explained, as he gently placed Charanko onto the floor.
Genos frowned at Sonic, "Well, aren't you generous then. Should I be thankful to you?"
Mumen laughed then. "So how are things between you and Saitama?"
Genos smiled. "Good, I think."
"When are you guys going on that date?"
"Huh, what date?"
Genos looked at Mumen and noticed his eyes growing wider, realizing his mistake. "Sorry. I didn't say anything! You didn't hear anything from me!"
Mumen hurriedly walked to the storeroom, obviously avoiding Genos from questioning him further. Saitama was secretly planning a date? Is it supposed to be a surprise?
Speak of the devil, Saitama entered the backroom then. Genos observed his facial expression, he noticed Saitama was anxious about something.
"Saitama?"
"Huh?"
Genos didn't want to tease Saitama but he always enjoyed seeing Saitama blush, so he asked, "Is there something you want to tell me?"
Saitama avoided eye contact again, staring everywhere else but at Genos, "Er, no?"
"No?", Genos couldn't hide the smirk on his face any longer.
"N-Not yet."
"Not yet? So there is something."
Saitama finally had the courage to look at him, as Genos enjoyed the full blush on his face, he answered, "I haven't decided yet. The best place to go.", a pause, then he continued, "I haven't done this before either. This isn't something I usually do. So, give me some time."
Genos felt his heart squeezed tightly, it happened too often now, whenever it involved Saitama. "You're looking for a place for our date?"
Saitama nodded, "It's our first one right? I don't want to mess it up."
"You will not.", Genos comforted as he walked closer to hug Saitama. Saitama rested his head on his shoulder then, seemingly content with the contact.
"It doesn't matter where we are going. As long as I'm with you, I'm happy."
"You always say things like this so easily.", Saitama mumbled, his voice muffled against Genos's shirt.
Genos planted a kiss on Saitama's temple. "Why are you the one planning it though? I can do it too." But as soon as Genos said it, Genos remembered. The encounter with Amai Mask. Genos grimaced at the thought. He wouldn't allow that to happen again.
"Fubuki said relationships need both sides to work out. I can't just do nothing, not just take and take.", Saitama said.
I don't mind. I don't mind giving you everything.
Their peaceful moment was ruined when Sonic came over to scratch Genos's leg, eager to break off their hug. Saitama let go then, and reached to hold Sonic in his arms, "Hey, what's wrong? Do you want more snacks?"
Genos just watched disdainfully from the side as he cleaned up the cat bowls. Mumen's wrong. This dumb cat ain't sharing.
There was a bright side to everything though, because if Sonic was just a cat, there would be no way for him to interrupt this date. Here. At a theme park, where no pets are allowed. Genos smiled at his own thoughts but was interrupted out of it when Saitama grabbed his hands to run to the nearest roller coaster. "Genos! Let's get on that!"
Seeing Saitama so excited, Genos simply followed suit, allowing Saitama to drag him to wherever he wanted. As Saitama looked around at the attractions, Genos merely observed him. Saitama must have taken Mumen's advice then. Theme parks huh?
Genos have never been to one before, not before the incident, and certainly not after the adoption. He had been too busy with work and studies to enjoy this. But this feels nice.
They entered a souvenir shop after Saitama saw something that caught his eyes through the window display. Genos watched as Saitama reached for a headband on the aisle to place it on Genos's head. There was a pause, then Saitama burst out laughing a moment later.
Genos couldn't help but smile as well. "What?"
Saitama didn't answer him, but he pushed Genos in front of a large mirror beside the display. Seeing his reflection, Genos pretended to be exasperated, but deep down, he was just enjoying it as much.
Genos reached for another headband on the aisle to put on Saitama. Then, he grabbed his shoulders to face the mirror together. "Now, we match."
Well, technically they were total opposites now. Genos had a devil horns headband that glowed red, while Saitama had a halo that glowed bright yellow.
Saitama smiled then but he removed the headbands. Confused, Genos asked, "You don't like them?"
"I do, but you're no devil and I'm no angel."
Genos begged to differ, Saitama had always been his personal guardian angel and Genos himself...wasn't the nicest person.
Saitama selected another one from the aisle again to put on Genos's head. "Now, this is you!"
Genos turned to look at the mirror. "A wolf?", Genos asked.
"Eh? It's not dog's ears?"
Genos grinned at Saitama's mistake. Well, he's not wrong though. I am a wolf.
Instead of answering him, Genos found the headband he was looking for and gently placed it on for Saitama. "I like this one."
"Huh? Bunny ears?"
"I liked it when you were wearing the bunny outfit at the club." Saitama's ears reddened again as Genos added, "Wear them for me?"
Saitama nodded, "Let's get these then. And we will have cotton candy later!". He rushed off to the counter to pay for the headbands, but Genos could tell Saitama was shy after hearing his request.
This really is fun , Genos thought, as he walked to the counter to join his lover.

Chapter Text
It had been five months since they started dating but if Genos had to be exact, it was 5 months, 2 days, and 17 hours. He could have countdowned to the seconds too but he didn't remember the exact time Saitama had confessed. Thinking back about it, it was extremely blurry and confusing. Genos was always one with perfect memory but he couldn't be sure.
Is that what love confession is supposed to be like? Is this the effect of love? Losing track of time?
But it was about time, for Saitama to meet Genos's parent. Dr. Kuseno had been asking for months to know Saitama but Genos had been worried. He feared that their relationship hadn't been stable enough yet. He remembered that Saitama had been intimidated by the wealth and fame Genos had. Genos knew Saitama wasn't confident about himself. It had been difficult to convince him.
Genos recalled the conversation they had on their intimate first night together. It was after Genos made love to Saitama. Genos remembered every moment of that night, as if he had recorded it with his eyes.
Saitama was panting heavily under him, and whined a little as Genos slowly pulled out.
"Are you okay? Does it still hurt?", Genos asked, as he showered sweet kisses on Saitama's neck, trying to soothe him.
It took a while but Saitama's breathing slowed down and he answered, a little dazed, "Y-Yeah."
Genos smiled at Saitama and kissed him on the forehead. Saitama reached up his arms to pull Genos down, to kiss him on the lips.
"I... I love you, Genos."
Genos's eyes widened, Saitama was unusually honest after sex. Genos didn't immediately answer, merely opted to reply Saitama with his action.
He continued to deepen the kiss, slowly, tenderly, to show how much he treasured Saitama.
When he broke the kiss for air, Genos saw how flushed Saitama was under him. He didn't want anyone else to see this arousing side of Saitama. It was cute when Saitama confessed that this was his first time doing such a thing, and it had made Genos unbelievably happy. He had been Saitama's first and he will be Saitama's only as well, Genos promised himself that.
"Be with me forever, Saitama."
Genos knew it sounded like a proposal, because it was meant to be one. True, there were no flowers or rings, no pianos or violins playing in the background, no bottle of champagne or candlelights. They were in Saitama's studio room, with the streetlight outside as the only light source. But this was the right timing, the right place to say this.
Saitama didn't reply immediately but Genos could see tears slowly forming in his eyes. By now, Genos knew what the tears meant, it wasn't rejection.
So, Genos reached out to wipe them away. "It's okay.", Genos said softly, shushing him.
"A-Are you sure?"
"Yes.", Genos answered without hesitation.
"But I'm not good enough, Genos. I might never be."
Genos kissed Saitama again. He didn't know how to convince Saitama that he was perfect for him; that all those flaws he said were attractive to Genos; that it didn't matter if everyone else in the world were better than Saitama, he would still have chosen Saitama.
I should just convince him with my actions then, for the rest of my life.
"I love you. I want to be with you until we grow old. I still want to be with you in another life, or afterlife, or if we become ghosts."
Saitama giggled at that. "We will be a very weird pair of ghosts then."
"Then, so be it."
There was a pause.
Saitama smiled softly and whispered the answer Genos wanted to hear; "Yes."
It would be tough, Genos knew, for the both of them to compromise to be together. Saitama was still working his various odd jobs, trying hard to be financially independent. He still wanted to impress Genos, he said. But Genos had been impressed with him since the day they first met. Though Genos didn't stop him, for his persistence was one of the many points Genos loved in Saitama.
However, some ground rules had been set down. There would be no more weird jobs where Saitama would need to compromise his health, nor will there be jobs where he had to wear so erotically. In other words, Genos wasn't letting any chance of someone else seeing Saitama in a bunny outfit ever again(though wearing one in the bedroom solely for Genos's eyes was an entirely different matter).
For Genos himself, he would still be a CEO, he would still need to work hard for his goal. The only difference now, was there would be someone by his side to support him.
He couldn't show Saitama to the world yet, but there will come a time for that. For now, Genos only had to show Saitama to one person, his godfather.
It was on a regular Thursday when Dr. Kuseno found the time to drop by at Genos's office to meet up. Dr. Kuseno is a busy man after all, to go all around the world for research and business purposes. It would just be a short and casual meeting.
Saitama had arrived first, after his part-time job at Fubuki's place. When he entered Genos's office, he looked around. There was a weird expression on his face, but it was gone as quickly.
"Genos!", Saitama greeted, "I'm not late right? Dr. Kuseno's not here yet?"
Genos noted that Saitama was still in his convenience store uniform but he was carrying a bag, probably containing his change of clothes. Genos smiled, Saitama had wanted to leave a good impression after all.
But it was too late for Saitama to change because Dr. Kuseno knocked on the door just a moment later. There was a look of panic in Saitama's eyes but Genos reached out to hold his hand, offering him comfort.
The door slowly opened to reveal Dr. Kuseno. He entered the office to greet them but the moment he saw Saitama, his eyes widened. "You're Saitama?"
"Oh, and you're Dr. Kuseno?"
Genos stared at the both of them for a moment. "Have you two met before?"
"Yeah." "Yes." They answered simultaneously.
Dr. Kuseno immediately added. "Genos, this was the kind gentleman who saved you during the burglary. We met in the police station before."
Oh, that explained a lot.
"Ah yes, father. I was looking for him for a very long time then."
Dr. Kuseno turned to look at Saitama again. "So, you are the man my son fell in love with."
Saitama didn't seem to know how to answer, so he just nodded and said, "It is nice to finally meet you, Dr."
Dr. Kuseno smiled, "Nice to meet you too, Saitama-kun."
"Er, there's no need to be so forma-"
"No.", Dr. Kuseno interrupted. "I am indebted to you, for the times you have saved Genos." He turned to look at Genos then, "I understand what kind of a man he is now. You have chosen really well, Genos."
"No. It was Saitama who chose me instead.", Genos explained. He took a deep breath before continuing, "He's the one I want to spend the rest of my life with, father."
Genos was gripping Saitama's hand tightly but he felt reassured when he felt a squeeze back from Saitama.
"Very well. I am happy for you both. We will need to sit down for a nice dinner to talk more about it. For now, I give you my blessings."
"Thank you, father." Saitama followed suit to bow when Genos did so.
As Dr. Kuseno turned to leave, they both breathed a sigh of relief.
Saitama smiled then. "Your father gave us his blessings."
Genos kissed his forehead lightly before replying, "Yeah." He was about to hug Saitama, his hands reached out when he felt the wetness.
In an instant, he pulled up Saitama's long sleeves to see the cause of it.
Genos scowled at the wound and the blood soaking his sleeves. Why didn't I notice this just now?
"Eh?", Saitama questioned, as if he just saw the injury as well. "I didn't know it's so serious. I didn't dirty your carpet right?"
His heart twisted painfully at the sight and the way Saitama neglected his well-being again. If there was one thing he could ever hate about Saitama, it would be this.
"Who cares about the carpet?! What happened?!", Genos asked, failing to lower his tone.
"It's nothing."
Genos spared Saitama a look. Instantly, Saitama explained himself, "I thought I might be late for the meeting. I ran here, I fell."
Upon hearing that, Genos's heart wrenched painfully again.
Saitama lowered his head, "I will be more careful next time. I'm sorry for making you worried."
Genos inspected the wound, the cut wasn't deep, but it was long and ugly. It looked painful. Without a warning, he hugged Saitama tightly. "...Sometimes, I just want to lock you up where no one can find you. Then, you wouldn't get hurt and I can keep you all to myself."
There, Genos had said it, his darkest desire. He didn't know how Saitama would react. But he didn't care anymore. Saitama should know how this had hurt him more than it had hurt Saitama.
He felt it then, Saitama's arms came to hug Genos back, clinging tighter to him. Saitama didn't say anything back, merely brushing his back gently, to console him.
Genos felt his tears falling. He felt he could breathe properly again. Because Saitama has accepted the worst part of me. He embraced it. He still loves me.
Saitama gently let go then, to reach up to wipe his tears away with his sleeve. A moment later, he flashed Genos a smile, "Are you going to treat the wound or not? It doesn't look like it will stop bleeding anytime soon."
Genos smiled back, despite the ugly tears on his face. "I will go get the first aid kit." He hesitantly let go of Saitama to retrieve the kit in the other room. Genos wiped away the remaining tears, his heart felt impossibly light, his head strangely clear. He had made peace with his ugliest thoughts. It will be okay from now on.
When he got back into the office, Saitama was standing by the coffee table. There was a frown on his face, just like when he first entered the office moments ago.
"Yo, Genos. This is going to sound weird...but I'm having deja vu . I think...I think I have been here before."
Genos grinned then.
Looks like Saitama will finally remember all our first meetings from now on.
