Chapter Text

“Hello?”

“Ari.”

“Dante.”

“I woke up this morning and I wanted to kiss you. I wanted to kiss you so bad I considered following you back home.”

“You don’t have to do that. We’re kissing right now.”

“It’s not the same.”

“Kiss me back.”

“I’m kissing you back.”

I smiled. “See? Not even an ocean can keep us from kissing.”

“That’s very poetic, Aristotle Mendoza.”

“You make me into a poetic guy.” I meant it, and he laughed because he was happy, and I laughed with him.

“Don’t ever let me break your heart again, Ari.”

He couldn’t see me, but I pursed my lips. I couldn’t promise that I could do that, and I couldn’t promise that I wouldn’t accidentally let myself break his. But I wasn’t worried. I wasn’t that worried. “How ‘bout this? Don’t break your own heart and I won’t ever break mine.”

Chapter 2: Ring, Ring...

Notes:

Chapter Text

I heard the phone ringing from the bathroom. I didn't remember it being that loud, but I heard it and my heart started racing. Then I started racing down the stairs. I made an abrupt stop and turned into my room to grab a shirt - not that it really mattered.

When I got downstairs, my mom was on the phone. She saw me rushing in and gave me a look, bright and amused. “Well,” she said, “it was lovely to have a moment with you but I’ll pass you over to Ari. I think he’ll explode if he doesn’t get the receiver soon.”

I would have said something smart-alecky about that comment to my mom, but I just squinted my eyes at her and grabbed the phone when she handed it to me.

“Hi,” I said.

“Hi,” Dante said back. “She makes it sound like you really miss me.”

I was in Paris just a few days ago, with Dante, holding hands and making promises and putting our broken hearts back together.

I glanced behind me to see my mom in the kitchen, a cup of coffee in front of her as she looked over her summer syllabus.

I sat where I usually did when on the phone with Dante and said, “Yeah. I do. I miss you like crazy.”

Maybe my mom heard me - she wasn't looking at me, but she was smiling at her papers now. And I could tell Dante was smiling too. I liked it when I said something that made Dante smile.

“Me too,” he said. “I miss you like fucking crazy.”

I laughed and he laughed and we laughed. And I asked him about Paris since I left.
