Chapter 1: Day 1: Silence

Chapter Text

It was a quiet night in Bushwick, which was rare in New York City, especially for the tail-end of May. Kurt swears he hasn’t heard a car alarm or police sirens in the last three hours, which was almost unheard of. The white noise of the city seems dampened, and Kurt is reveling in it. Blaine went to bed hours ago, and Kurt almost feels bad for not still laying down with him. Figuring out how to live with each other again now that Rachel has moved out has been fun, interesting. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t also exhausting.
Kurt loves Blaine, but sometimes he really misses having his alone time. Blaine always wants to be doing something, and Kurt enjoys a nice lounge every now and then. It wasn’t that big of a deal, and Blaine is learning that sometimes it’s best to leave Kurt to his own devices. But Kurt did feel like he was distancing himself from his fiance, and that did make him feel really, really bad.
And this is how Kurt ended up here, sprawled out across the entirety of what used to be Rachel’s bedroom, in the very wee hours of the morning, making Blaine a new collection of bowties.
Kurt liked being able to do this for him, it’s been a while since he’s made Blaine anything. There were a couple of old shirts that Kurt couldn’t (or didn’t want to) wear anymore, and as much as it hurt Kurt’s soul to cut into the velvet jacket that he wore during Artie’s televised Christmas special, Kurt can’t help but admit that knowing that Blaine will get more use out of it now brings a smile to his face.
Kurt had been in this rhythm for a little while now, tracing his pattern with a chalk pencil before cutting the fabric, sewing up the side-seams, flipping the bow tie right-side out, ironing the whole thing flat, and then finishing the last bit of stitching. Kurt had made 8 ties before he realized that it was nearing 4 in the morning, and that he should probably lay down with his dearest.
After placing Blaine’s new presents in a decorative box on their bed side table (and writing a sticky note for on top of the box that simply read ‘because I love you’) Kurt started getting dressed for bed. He carefully lifts up one edge of their comforter before stopping what he’s doing completely.
The barest traces of sunlight are starting to peek in through the windows, swaddling Blaine in soft light. He’s snoring lightly, lips parted, and his hair is sticking up in every which way, covering most of his forehead in loose, slightly frizzy coils. And Kurt can’t help but just...look at him. He glances down at his hand, noticing how the brighter atmosphere makes his engagement ring glint. He looks at Blaine’s hand, which is currently outstretched over Kurt’s half of the bed, and looks at his engagement ring too.
He wishes that he could talk to himself from his freshman year of high school. Here, in this silence, with the world just starting to wake up...everything is perfect, everything is as it should be.
Kurt slips into bed, sliding underneath Blaine’s arm, and brushes a few stray curls to kiss his forehead. He knows that nothing can stay forever, but here, in this moment, everything has finally fallen into place.
