Blazing Fury

Summary:

The Legendary’s have been going MIA for a while now, and with unease building, Knight is worried about his partners.
So he resolves to journey to their domains and find them.

Though the adventure turns into more than he anticipated.

Notes:

To make a long story short, I got this idea from a booster shot fever dream and I liked it enough I started to develop it and here we are.

For anyone who’s read any of my other cookie run fics, this is like a similar universe but also it’s own thing. An au of an au if you will.
I’ll be using like same writing rules I do with my other cookie stuff essentially lol.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Someone Has to Go

Chapter Text

It was another sunny day in the cookie kingdom. The blueberry birds were chirping as they flustered about, a few clouds lazily drifted across the sky, the occasional baa of a cotton candy sheep could be heard in the distance. From an outside perspective all seemed ideal and well.

And yet Knight was worried

Well worried was a bit of an understatement

But nobody could deny the odd atmosphere as of late. The legendary cookies were gone,

Now it wasn’t unusual for them to leave the kingdom for a while, they’re forces of nature with their own domain to watch over, but they’d at least send a messenger bird and stay in contact.

It had started with Wind Archer, he had his duty to protect the sleeping millennial tree, so Knight was used to him being gone for long periods of time, he would always keep in contact though! And he and Fire Spirit would eagerly await every letter.

But it never came.

And then Moonlight left, stating she was worried about her city, and just like Archer, contact was lost.

And then it was Sea fairy, disappearing into her ocean,

And finally even Fire Spirit had left, seeming nearly panicked,

Each one stating they felt something was putting their domain in danger, and then they’d go radio silent.

Knight fidgeted with his gauntlet as he sat on a nearby bench, he couldn’t settle that bubbling feeling in his gut of something being wrong.

Or maybe he just missed his partners.

Both?

He shook his head and sighed, maybe the atmosphere was getting to him more than he thought, nobody could deny losing their heavy hitters had affected scouting missions and expeditions. The cake monsters were tough and only seemed to get stronger every day. They had adapted but the absence was felt.

It didn’t help that Knight had noticed the healing cookies working overtime…

Ugh! Knight shook his head again. He was getting stuck in his thoughts once too often, he had gone on this walk outside to escape them not stew in them.

Fire Spirit always knew a way to keep him from worrying too much, but he wasn’t here...

Knight cookie suddenly stood up before that train of thought could leave the metaphorical station. Clearly the background noise of the fountain wasn’t enough to distract his mind, so let’s find something different!

Not knowing exactly where he'd end up, Knight started walking towards the one area of the kingdom that always seemed to have a perpetual chill.

Not too surprising, it’s been like this since the Frost Queen had arrived here. She said she could adapt to this kingdoms warmer climate, but as a being of ice and snow Gingerbrave and his friends thought she’d be happier with her own little area to call home, after all they’d attempted to build similar little areas for all the other elemental beings, the Queen wasn’t one to show emotion often, but Princess swore up and down she saw the Ice cold cookie smile at the gesture.

A cold gust of air pulled Knight out of his own head again, causing him to shiver, the snow covered area had its own beauty to it, with cold land being illuminated by warm yellow lanterns, the armored cookie stuck to the path as he took a slow stroll through the area.

He found himself standing in front of the Frost Queen’s icey throne. It was a beautiful structure, as well as intimidating. He heard rumors that the ice queen built it herself, the sugar gnomes not being needed at all. Knight wasn’t big on architecture or anything like that, but he had to admit it was impressive.

Knight was so caught up in his own thoughts that he didn’t even notice the air around him becoming colder as a frosty figure approached his side.

“Have you come here to admire my work, Knight?”

Knight nearly jumped out of his armor as Frost Queen spoke, her voice soft as it was commanding, cold like the very snow she channeled. It made the other cookie shiver as he regained his posture.

“Ah! Apologies, Lady Frost Queen, I was wandering and ended up here...” he looked back at the throne and added, “... it is impressive though” the other gave a quiet nod at that. And the two stood in silence for a moment.

And just as Knight considered maybe he should walk away, the Ice queen spoke.

“I’ve heard you’ve been troubled lately, would that be any reason you’ve ended up wandering?”

“Ah!” Knight felt his cheeks warm up in embarrassment “w-where’d you hear that?”

“I’m not one for gossip, but Snow Sugar likes to tell me about various happenings in the kingdom whenever they visit” Ah, that made sense, the kid loves the snow, and Frost queen practically summons blizzards wherever she goes. Knight sighed, rubbing a hand along his arm.

“I... yes I suppose they’d be right. I’m just... worried. I haven’t heard back from Fire Spirit or Wind Archer... and with the others being out of contact too...” Princess always said he worried too much, over her, his duty, and other things, but something in his gut was insisting there was more to this than just a general anxiety over things.

“Your worries are warranted, Dear knight.” When the queen spoke, Knight snapped his attention back to her, she continued. “Something has been amiss lately. I’ve felt it in the air for a while now. The others must have felt it too for them to return to their domains so quickly.” As she spoke she used her free hand to inspect an ice crystal dropping on a frozen tree branch, knight looked away, staring so intently at a pile of snow one wouldn’t be surprised if he burnt a hole into it.

Something was wrong, and she knew it

And yet...

“Apologies if this is out of line, Lady Frost Queen” Knight looked up at the other, trying not to shiver under her cold gaze as she looked back at him,

“But don’t you have your own domain? Aren’t you worried about it as well?” Every legendary that had left said the same thing, something was wrong and they needed to ensure the safety of their domain. It had been a reasonable explanation, even with such powerful cookies agreeing to help the kingdom they still had their own homes to protect.

Frost queen gave a thoughtful hum, inspecting another ice shard frozen onto the tree, then shook her head.

“My domain is covered in ice and snow, not many cookies can simply wander in there without falling victim to the frozen storm” she spoke evenly, as if this was simply a fact of life.

“It will be fine without me, besides..” she glanced over in another direction, knight followed her gaze and spotted Cotton, she was happily chatting with Snow Sugar he couldn’t hear their conversation but the two seemed engaged in their discussion.

“...I made a promise to someone to watch over her, if my feeling is correct, I’m needed here more than ever” she returned her gaze back to Knight, who nodded in understanding.

“I see...”

Frost Queen suddenly plucked a shard of ice off the tree, inspecting it in her hands, before once again she spoke.

“Nothing can stop the passage of time, and soon enough whatever will happen will be upon us” Frost Queen looked out, a stoic expression on her frost covered face.

“For now, all we must do is wait.”

Knight looked to the side.

“Maybe so... but I’m not sure how much longer I can wait.” And with that, he gave the Icey cookie a small bow and left, his own mind bubbling with thoughts.

Some distance away, Pure vanilla cookie had observed the conversation, not on purpose mind you but his own curiosity got the better of him when he overheard a few bits of it. Now he was contemplating his own thoughts. Knight cookie was a brave soul, determined whenever he was given a task, even if others didn’t have much faith in him.

Pure vanilla had a feeling the knight wouldn’t sit idly by with a warning like that.

And just when he had thought of an idea, the very purple haired woman he was about to search for walked by, with a small smile on his lips he quickly walked over,

“Ah, Alchemist was it? Can we chat for a moment?”

It barely even took a day before Knight had come to a decision, he was going to journey out and check on Fire Spirit and Wind Archer. After he had announced his journey there of course was a small ruckus, it definitely didn’t help that he insisted he’d be fine on his own. Even with Princess vouching for his abilities the others still doubted him.

He was used to it, so he prepared for his journey while reminding every cookie that approached him he’d be fine on his own.

“Now I don’t doubt your abilities friend,” Madeleine spoke, walking along with Knight as he gathered his food rations for the trip. “But you’ll be journeying to dragon valley, yes? Surely even one companion would make the trek easier, and as the knight commander chosen by the Divine I’m always happy to-“ but before he could go off on his target, Knight cut him off.

“As I’ve said before I’ll be fine. I’ve journeyed through the dragon’s valley before. Multiple times. Your request is appreciated but unneeded” the smaller of the two knights rolled his eyes, Madeleine still seemed skeptical, but at least he had enough decency to respect his decision.

“Ah, very well then. May the Divine bless you and keep you safe on your travels, friend!” The Paladin gave one of his usual shining grins before wandering off. Knight let out a sigh as the other finally left, he didn’t hate the paladin but the man could be stubborn sometimes.

Then again he’s been called stubborn as well, maybe it’s just a common trait among soldiers?

Though before his mind could wander again he felt the air get cold. He looked up and saw Frost Queen approaching. He quickly turned to give her a bow as she stood in front of him.

“So you’ve decided to search for them?” She spoke evenly, Knight didn’t need to ask who she was talking about, he nodded.

“Yes, I am... you’re not here to convince me otherwise are you?” He really hoped not, getting a lecture from a cookie as powerful as Frost Queen would just feel insulting to him. But thankfully, she shook her head.

“I am not here for that, instead I am here to give you a gift.” And with that, she held out her previously concealed hand.

Sitting in the palm was a frost shard, it looked similar to the ones hanging off of her trees, it looked clear as an ice crystal, yet something in its center pulsed with magic.. Hesitantly, Knight accepted it, the shard felt ice cold in his hand, yet for some reason his hand didn’t feel ready to freeze.

“This ice shard has enough power to freeze over an entire army when shattered. I hope you will have no need for it.” And with that, she turned and left, leaving Knight cookie barely managing to stumble out a statement of gratitude to the ice queen. He looked back at the shard in his hand, then at the bag he kept his food rations in.

Well, he supposed there’s stranger ways to keep food chilled.

Knight was ready to leave the next morning.

Thank the witches, nobody was trying to stop him, instead as he lead his sugar horse towards the kingdom gates those he passed wished him luck or simply gave him a short nod. Though Princess herself was waiting at the gates to see him off.

“You got everything you need right?” She asked and Knight nodded.

“Double checked it this morning, hey since when have you been the one to worry about me?” Princess snickered at the comment and playfully shoved the other.

“Heyyy I’m allowed to worry about my best friend! You be careful out there alright? I’ve heard rumors of the cake monsters being extra vicious lately.” She looked out towards the forest expanse that lined the kingdom, Knight put a hand on her shoulder to reassure her.

“I’ll be alright, I’ve battled worse and lived to tell the tale.” Knight smiled as princes smirked back.

“Yeah, a shame other people don’t listen to it though.” She teases and Knight looked unamused. Though before he could make any quip back Princess suddenly pulled him into a hug.

“...you bring those two back safe okay?” Knight could hear the worried tone in her quiet voice, knight hugged his friend back and reassured her.

“I will”

As they let go of each other, Knight looked over when he heard another set of footsteps approaching. He nearly jumped when he saw Pure vanilla approach with a small wave.

“Ah, seems I made it just in time” he smiled softly, though it fell slightly when he observed the scene.

“...I wasn’t interrupting anything was I?”

“Pffsshh nah you’re fine.” Princes waved her hand, how she was able to stay so relaxed around cookies as powerful as Pure vanilla Knight never understood.

“I see.” Pure vanilla blinked, well his staff did, before he turned his attention to Knight. “Back on topic, I’ve come to give you a send off gift” and with that he pulled out the small bag he had been carrying under his arm.

“Alchemist and I finished them this morning, I hope they’ll be of great help to you” the healer smiled, knight’s curiosity was piqued as he opened the bag.

Inside sat three potions, they had a golden colored liquid contained inside of the glass. Knight wasn’t much of a potion expert, but even he could tell these were special.

“They’re healing potions,” Pure vanilla explained, “brewed with some of my own magic infused in them. They’ll be able to completely heal any injury. Ah! Alchemist wanted me to warn you have to drink the entire thing in order to get the full effect.”

Princess’s eyes sparkled as she snuck a peek into the back,

“Woahhh! That’s cool! Thank you very much!” Princess grinned, and quickly knight nodded as well, giving a small bow.

“Yes! Thank you, very much sir Pure Vanilla.” The healer simply smiled and gave his own bow back.

“I wish you safe travels, Knight.” And with that he waved and wandered back into the kingdom. Knight stored the potions in his bag before mounting his trust horse. He gave one final look back at Princess, who nodded and waved. And with that, he was off. Entering into the forest path, his destination: Dragon’s Vally

Chapter 2: A Rough Start

Chapter Text

He had been on the road for a few days now.

The forest path had faded, but he knew his direction by way of the stars. Knight prided himself on having a strong internal compass, and it didn’t fail him now.

Occasionally there would be a cake hound or two he’d have to scare off, but as he traveled he noticed how not many monsters appeared, even in the dark nights where he was sure they lingered. He wondered why this was, was it luck? Or we’re they simply occupied elsewhere that they didn’t pay a single human any kind.

The soft glow of the moon at night provided no answers.

It left him ample time to ponder during the day, with nothing else to do while riding on horseback. So Knight thought, about the situation mainly, and his quest. It still concerned him, what could happen to cause even the legendary’s to be afraid. They were the strongest beings known to man, the only living beings who could compare were the ancients, but they had been lost...

Well presumably, but with Pure Vanilla’s appearance maybe there was more going on than simply them disappearing.

But the ancients were human, even with their pure soul jam granting them strength, and seemingly immortality if Pure Vanilla is any proof of that, the ancients were still living beings. They were baked, and had their own flaws underneath everything.

But the Legendary’s were different...

They were powerful beings, forces of nature, embodiment of their respective element;

Fire, wind, water, dreams and memory, ice and cycles, time itself! With very few exceptions these beings weren’t even baked into this world, they were manifested.

Some stories tell of a few legendary’s ascending to their position.

And then there was the Millennial Tree, a being of such power they embodied earthbread itself. He took on the form of a human to become closer to life, and then one day he sealed himself in a tree and slept. Knight heard various stories theorizing what happened, some say he was cursed, others saying he simply decided to leave humanity to its own devices.

Wind archer had told him the most compelling story.

“I hadn’t been born when this happened, but I’m sure it happened” Wind Archer had explained, idly cleaning off his bow as he spoke,

“When the darkness threatened to spread beyond this continent, the Millennial Tree used all of his power to prevent that, allowing Cookies to have a haven across the ocean and live. He then sealed himself into a centuries-long sleep, to regain his strength.” Archer looked out, the way the sun cast against his silhouette gave him a noble yet mysterious look. “And it’s my duty to protect him as he sleeps”

Knight sighed as he shook himself out of the memory. He supposed Millennial Tree was a very notable exception to the rule

And then there were the dragons.

Knight didn’t know much about their history aside from the fact they are ancient beings. Forces of nature in their own right. He decides it’s really not much of an argument to say they’re in a class of their own.

Even when old and weakened with age, a dragon is a force of power to be reckoned with.

He sometimes still couldn’t believe he managed to emerge from that battle alive...

Knight was startled out of his thoughts when his horse made a noise of complaint. He saw it had started to get dark and huffed, reaching over to rub his horses neck, he stopped their progression.

“I suppose you must be tired by now. Lets camp here for the night”

And with that he hopped off of his horse and went to find a clearing nearby.

Thankfully, luck was on his side, he found an open area near the tree line, he set up camp for the night as his horse laid in the grass, by pure luck no cake monsters seemed to be nearby, Knight decided not to ask why and just be grateful for now.

Sighing, Knight rested himself against a tree, he noted seeing his horse not far away simply grazing as it rested as well.

With the knowledge of at least that on his mind, he drifted off into sleep.

He was surrounded by darkness.

A suffocating feeling in his chest.

Like he was struggling for air,

Finally, a light shown in the darkness

Crimson, cold, unwelcoming,

But it’s all that there was,

He moved towards it, hoping for release,

But dark tendrils grabbed his legs,

He tripped, clawing at the ground as he was dragged further into the dark.

He looked up and saw a horned figure.

She was smiling wickedly at him.

A loud cackle overwhelmed his senses, and then growls and hisses

And the darkness choked the life out of him

Knight awoke to his horse letting out a fearful whinny, his heart was racing, adrenaline kicking in from the nightmare.

He glanced at the sky and felt his stomach drop.

The moon was a bloody red

Whatever lingering exhaustion he had was immediately purged from his system as he quickly notices a hoard of cake monsters surrounding his small camp in that crimson light.

Grabbing his sword Knight, sprung to his feet.

He barely had time to ready himself when a cake wolf charged, using his sword he pushed it back, but not before another one charged at his side, scratching at his armor.

Knight hissed and kicked it away. Only for another cake monster to take its place and knock him back.

Knight continued to stand his ground, but there were too many enemies, he had to keep fighting though.

He had to.

He had to for them.

Slice, kick, growl, dodge

A large cake wolf got a good scratch in on his legs, Knight cried out but kept fighting.

Swipe, slice, block, bite.

Cake hounds tackled him, and before he could recover a wolf bit down harshly on his arm, warm

Blood seeped through his armor as he shook the beast off, Knight had dropped his sword.

Kick, shove, growl, claw,

Knight huffed, clinging to his injured arm, the cake monsters growled as he saw a few cake wolves circling him, waiting for a moment to claim their prey. But a sharp voice cut through the air, making all freeze.

“That’s enough.” The cake monsters turned towards the voice, and Knight found himself looking as well.

His eyes went wide as he recognized who he was looking at.

Moonlight strode towards him, with her usual effortless grace, but instead of calming blues she wore harsh reds and blacks, her key was replaced with a frightening looking scythe, and an unusually cruel expression was on her face.

Only one word crossed Knight’s mind to describe this dark reflection of Lady Moonlight.

Blood moon.

“So, you’re the cookie that slew a dragon? Not really much going on, especially if you can be taken down by a simple pack of monsters” The Alluring Crescent hummed, squinting at the smaller human like he was some offered prize.

“Well, my Lady never said anything about killing you... but she doesn’t like pesky hero’s interfering with her plans.” She twirled her scythe around in her arms, before holding it up to the other, sharpened blade inches from the human's neck.

“I could be rid of you right now, a simple slash to the throat would do, or maybe I’ll let my beasts rip you limb from limb? Or perhaps I should simply leave you to bleed out.” The Crimson Moonlight grinned with wicked delight at the thought, Knight shivered. Never had he ever dreamed of hearing someone as kind as Lady Moonlight say anything like that.

And if this happened to her... what of the other Legendaries?

A tense moment passed, before the cruel moonlight lowered her weapon somewhat.

“But... a part of me is still merciful... I may be willing to spare you a gruesome death... if you do something for me” Knight struggled to find his voice, but gave a shallow nod to show he was listening. The other smirked.

“Go to the ocean, there you will find the Dread Tyrant, or perhaps you knew her as Sea fairy?”

Knight felt sick,

“A part of me still cares for her... and seeing her suffering brings me no joy.” Crimson Moonlight sighed, resting a free hand on her cheek.

“If you find a way to subdue her, without killing her, I will drive the cake monsters away from you as you travel... though if you refuse, I’ll simply lure them towards you.” Once again, she gave the injured Knight a wicked grin.

“So, do we have a deal?~”

Knight glanced at the cake monsters still surrounding him, they growled in anticipation.

He didn’t really have a choice here did he?

“Yes, o-of course, Lady Moonlight” he answered, the crimson moon grinned.

“Good,” she hummed, and with a motion from her scythe the monsters scattered. Leaving only the two alone in the clearing.

“As a sign of good faith I’ll make sure no hoards of monsters block your path to the ocean. To help push you in the right direction~” and with a chilling chuckle she turned away.

“Try not to die before you reach the ocean, little Knight” and just as suddenly as she appeared, Lady Moonlight was gone.

And Knight was left alone.

As the adrenalin wore off Knight fell to his knees. He was too injured to travel right now, but he had no doubts that the corrupted Moonlight wouldn’t be very patient with him...

The weight of those health potions in his pocket got his attention,

He really had hoped he wouldn’t have to use one so soon but.... with a defeated sigh he dug one out of his armor with his good arm. The golden liquid inside glittered somewhat, Knight popped off the cork and downed the whole thing.

It tasted like vanilla.

Almost as soon as he finished off the bottles contents a warmth spread though his body, and his injuries closed as they were healed.

Knight found himself impressed by how quickly the potion worked, he’d have to thank Alchemist and Pure Vanilla again once he got back.

As he stood up, Knight suddenly realized something.

He hadn’t seen his horse since the monster attack, panicked, Knight called out.

“Macaroon!? Mac where are you?” He called, thankfully a familiar whinny caught his attention, and as he ran over he found his trusty horse, thankfully unharmed, if a bit spooked.

Knight soothed them quickly, leading them back to the campsite.

“We’ve got to take a bit of a detour buddy,” he mumbled, patting Macaroon on the neck. “So get some rest, we’re back on the move in the morning,” the horse chuffed as Knight went back to where his bedroll was.

It was a bit scratched up from the fight but it’s survived worse.

He sat down, figuring he should get some rest as well.

Though Knight wasn’t sure how much sleep he would get tonight. Not with his mind racing with a terrifying possibility.

If both Lady Moonlight And Lady Sea Fairy were corrupted by darkness,

Then what about Fire Spirit and Wind Archer.

Knight laid down and closed his eyes, praying to whatever force would listen that they were both okay.

But deep down, he had a feeling he wouldn’t be so lucky.

Notes:

No I totally didn’t forget to name the horse at the start and gave it one just today.
Fun fact the other name I was considering was Percival

As always let me know of any spelling or grammar mistakes

Chapter Text

Knight swung his sword as he scared away a cake boar, Macaroon making a startled whiny that knight quickly soothed with a pat to its neck.

He had been traveling for a day now, and the monster attacks had been very infrequent.

No doubt thanks to the Crimson Moonlight keeping her promise. A constant reminder of her gaze being the blood moon that glimmered at night.

It had its own beauty, knight supposed, but in a fundamentally wrong way.

The man sighed to himself as he settled for the night, his horse resting beside him as he dug through the rations for tonight’s meal. His mind still racing to find an answer to an imposing question:

How would he subdue the embodiment of the ocean itself? He paused when his hand brushed past something icy. Looking over, he saw the ice shard still in its place inside of the food pack, it’s center giving a cold glow. He recalled Frost Queen’s warning, when shattered it had the power to freeze an army...

But Knight also recalled the nature of the curse sea fairy bore.

Shaking his head, he closed the pack, he only hoped even when corrupted, lady Sea Fairy would be willing to listen to reason.

But a feeling in his gut told him he might not be so fortunate.

With a melancholic thought on his mind, Knight sat himself beside the fire, helmet at his side as he warmed up his ration. His mind idly drifted to a familiar scenario some time ago.

Wind Archer sat at the fire, tending to the food they were preparing, as well as the fire itself. Knight was busy cleaning his armor, even when on a quest he liked to keep it tended to, which left Fire spirit without much to busy himself.

He floated idly for a bit playing with an orange flame in his hand as he also kept a quiet lookout, but the area they were in was fairly safe, the worst enemy they’ve faced so far was an angry snake, so he wasn’t too concerned.

He glanced over at Archer at the campfire. He was focused as he tended to the food over the fire, even when doing something simple he was always so focused and attentive. Like he was determined to never make a mistake.

It was admirable, in Spirit’s opinion, though he’d also think Archer needed to loosen up more.

A devious smirk crossed his lips, getting an idea.

Pestering Archer sounded more fun than sitting there anyways.

So setting his feet on the ground Fire spirit moved to kneel next to Wind Archer. The other looked over at him briefly, acknowledging his presence, before returning his focus to the fire.

“Heya Archie.” Fire spirit hummed, but before he could even try and say anything else the other spoke.

“Fire Spirit, are you here to help or are you just bored?” He deadpanned, though there was no Malice behind his words. The fire elemental blinked once then nervously chuckled.

“Wow, didn't even humor me a little huh?” He chuckled before leaning back on his heels.

“I’m bored, yeah, there’s no enemies for miles, and I don't do well sitting still.” He was aware the other knew that about him, the trio had traveled together on expositions or quests before. Though he suddenly gasped as an idea struck.

“Think I can help with the-“

“Fire spirit...” Wind Archer glanced at the other, a look of warning. “You’re not helping with the cooking.”

“Awww why not?” Spirit pouted, playing up the emotion by giving the wind elemental his best puppy dog eyes.

They had no effect as the other lightly flared.

“Because last time you were in charge of cooking you burnt everything to cinders. And I hope by now I don’t have to remind you that Knight and I can’t eat charcoal like you can” as he spoke he poked the camp fire with a stick, it caught onto the same stick briefly, turning the warm wood into a dark charcoal. Fire spirit laughed to try and hide his embarrassment

It didn’t work.

“You’ll never let me live that one down will ya Archie?”

“Absolutely not,” Wind Archer smiled. They overheard Knight snort, seems he had been listening in on the conversation. Fire spirit gasped dramatically and looked back at the other, a look of foe-pain on his face.

“You too Knighty?” He cried, the dramatic act only making the human laugh more.

“It is a little amusing, the embodiment of Fire can’t cook to save his life” knight looked up from his work briefly at the comment. Said fire elemental stuck his tongue out and turned away.

“It’s not my fault food is so easy to burn!” He huffed, the human chuckled and looked back at his work.

“Nobody’s perfect.” He hummed.

“The point is,”

The archer held up the charcoal stick in his hands, the flame long since had died out and it was cool to the touch. With an almost playful tone, he poked Fire spirit in the chest with it.

“Unless you wish to tend to the campfire with me I think your flame is best suited somewhere else.”

“Oof!” Fire spirit put a hand to his head and his chest, falling back in foe pain.

“You wound me Archie! How could you do this to me? I thought you loved me?” The green man in question simply rolled his eyes at the others' antics, Tossing the stick back into the flames. During Fire Spirits dramatics, he leaned over to the human, who was nearly finished cleaning his armor for the night and had his helmet off. Fire Spirit whined.

“Knightyyy I’ve been wounded~”

“Fire Spirit you’re fine” the human glances at the other, and after seeing no clear signs of damage chuckled,

“I’ll never recover from this” he leaned further into the other, practically laying on him now.

“Spirit please” knight smiled, fighting back a laugh.

“Avenge me Knighty!”

The human couldn’t help the laugh he broke into, he shook his head lightly and open his mouth to give some sort of retort.

Though before Knight could say anything else Archer had walked over, sat himself next to the human, and soon enough leaned against his other side.

It was safe to say he was not getting any more work done like this.

“Really guys?” Knight deadpanned, but held no malice behind it.

“Hmm, you’re warm” Archer hummed, nuzzling his face into the crook of the humans neck.

“Well Of course he’s warm, I’m here~” Fire spirit grinned, crossing his arms and resting them on top of Knight’s head.

“You’re not warm, Fire spirit, you’re hot” Archer rolled his eyes.

“Hell yeah I am” the other grinned with a wink, which got another eye roll and a smile from Archer.

“You aren’t going to let me get up are you?” Knight asked, slowly realizing how he was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Or wind and fire he supposed.

“Hmmm, nope!” Fire spirit hummed, leaning further into the human, his legs floating behind him idly.

“But the food?” Knight asked in mild concern.

“It will be fine.” Archer reassured, shifting his weight so he could lean on the human as well. “It’s moved away from the direct flames, it won’t burn for a while.”

“You’re both like oversized cats sometimes I swear”  Knight, quickly accepting his fate as a rest spot for the two elementals, sighed in content. A smile tugging at his cheeks.

“But you love us~” Fire spirit purred, Knight chuckled softly. Putting his armor down, he wouldn’t be able to finish it anyways like this.

He recalls the trio fell into a comfortable silence, only breaking when they went to eat.

Knight remembers feeling warm and secure that night, cuddled up against his two partners.

A part of him is still in awe that he was fortunate enough to have them both. He closed his eyes, basking in the warmth of being with those he loved and trusted.

But when Knight opened his eyes he was alone.

The dark night only pushed away by the light of a lone campfire, yet even when sitting nearby, he felt cold and alone.

“...I miss them” he spoke to nobody, staring at his food, his appetite leaving him.

He hoped they would be okay, that hope leading him this far. But the more he thought the more the reality set in that this wouldn’t be the case.

Beings as powerful as Lady Moonlight and Lady Sea Fairy were corrupted, she likely had gotten Fire Spirit and Wind Archer as well.

Knight didn’t know how to save them.

He tightened his hand into a fist. He couldn’t just give up, they needed him now more than ever! He’d just have to find a way to save them.

So taking a bite of his meal, knights resolved burned in his chest. He’d find a way to purge the darkness from them.

But before he could do that, he’d have to subdue Sea Fairy.

He looked out onto the path, the trees were getting scarcer and he had no doubt he’d be by the ocean in a day or so. A confrontation wouldn’t be long now.

So as he prepared to settle for the night, he resolved to start thinking of a plan for the encounter.

Though he supposed, the first thing he’d need to do was find a boat.

Chapter 4: Rising Dread

Summary:

Knight confronts the corrupted sea fairy
Goes about as well as you’d think

Notes:

The ocean is freaking terrifying when you think about it.

Anyhow no real tw for this one other then several mentions of fear of drowning
Which is fair

Also yes I’m posting this past midnight

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It was thankfully easy to get a boat, there was a fishing town nearby the sea he was able to buy one from, they also agreed to take care of Macaroon while he was out at sea.

One less thing to worry about, Knight supposed.

Which gave Knight plenty of room to be concerned over the unnaturally still waters.

There weren’t even any waves, the only ripples coming from his own boat paddling along.

He was hoping for the best, and yet prepared for the worst, leaving most of his stuff back with his horse, the only items he had on him were the two remaining health potions, his trusty sword, and the ice shard.

It felt cold against his chest.

Or maybe it was just the cold feeling of dread as he paddled further into the open ocean

He felt like he had a target on his back, helpless as he waited for a predator to strike.

She was taking her sweet time apparently.

So Knight continued on, waiting in anxious anticipation for the other shoe to drop.

And just as he started to wonder if he had gotten lost at sea. The ocean roared to life.

Knight yelped as the waves around him suddenly surged, dipping and easily dragging along his little boat, he heard water rushing around him, but was too distracted with the feeling of his boat being lifted by the waves. He glanced out and caught the edge of a water cyclone forming, though had to scramble for footing before he got a good look at it.

Knight held onto the side of his tiny boat for dear life as the waves held it nearly sideways, he couldn’t help but look into the center of the cyclone.

And he made eye contact with her.

The Dread Tyrant.

Sea fairies‘ Usual light blues were replaced by a cold turquoise and blueish-black, her waterfall hair flowing upwards like a vortex, threatening to suck in whatever poor soul got too close.

But her eyes were what gave Knight a chill, Sea Fairy wasn’t the most expressive, but you could still see that life, that determination in her eyes. To live, to fight, to be with her beloved moon.

But the tyrants eyes were dead, cold, and filled with despair

For a moment, neither of them spoke, the only sound being the rushing waves surrounding them.

But soon enough Knight found his voice.

“Lady s- Lady Dread Tyrant” Knight spoke, finding he had to raise his voice over the rushing waves.

“I’m here on behalf of Lady... Crimson Moonlight. She asked me to-“

“Subdue me...” the corrupted Sea Fairy cut him off. “I’m aware...” her voice held an unnatural calm, yet Knight felt himself shiver. But he steeled his resolve and raised his voice again.

“Please... can’t we talk about this? I don’t wish to fight.” Especially since Knight didn’t know how he could win against the ocean. “I’m going to find a way to save you all, you just need to hold out a little longer. I know everyone back at the Cookie Kingdom are waiting for you!” He didn’t know if the other was listening to him, she hadn’t reacted at all. Not until Knight added in a quieter voice.

“I know Squid Ink misses you... as does Sorbet Shark” For a moment, he saw the others eyes widen. But her face fell again soon enough. For a long moment nobody spoke.

Until the Tyrant did.

“It doesn’t matter, I cannot resist even if I wished to.” Knight heard the waves pick up around him as the Dread Tyrant raised a hand.

“Dark enchantress has a vision for the world... there is no use going against her.” And in one swift movement, the fairy tossed Knight and his meager boat across the waves, how he managed to hold on was beyond him, but as he regained his composure after the sudden launch he saw the Tyrant raise from the cyclone, wielding her trident.

So this would be a fight.

The Dread Tyrant raises her weapon and more bursts of waves shot towards him, knocking into the boat and causing it to sway dangerously, threatening to knock the helpless human into the water.

As he regained his balance, Knight drew his sword, then quickly realized how useless it would be considering the only bit of solid footing he had was the very boat below him.

And he was trying to fight the ocean.

He needed a better plan.

More torrents of water knocked into the boat, Knight swung his sword and managed to cut one of the pillars in half, but two more quickly followed and knocked into the boat, knight swore he heard splintering wood.

If he didn’t go down first, the wooden boat would be torn to shreds, Leaving him without a platform to fight on.

What he needed was a way to end this battle quickly. Because he’s sure it wouldn’t be hard for the other to knock him into the water and drown him below the waves.

And he’d be helpless to try and save himself.

The ocean was merciless, and the tyrant did not care.

And Knight was quickly realizing just how one sided this fight was.

More waves, more splintering wood, and still no visible reaction from the tyrant. Knight let it a yelp as he was knocked onto his back.

There was no way for him to win. Not out in the open ocean. Not with the waves threatening to rip his puny boat apart. Knight tried to rack his brain for solutions.

But the only thing getting his attention was the chill of the shard stored in his armor.

He had no choice did he?

Knight quickly reached into his chest plate and dug out the ice shard. He had been told to use this as a last resort.

And he would drown out here if he didn’t do something.

So, tightening his hold on the item, Knight pushed himself to his feet. He looked back up at the Dread Tyrant.

Corrupted sea fairy’s expression still didn’t change, even as water cyclones surrounded her.

“I’m sorry, Sea fairy,” knight spoke, unsure if the other would even hear him over the waves. “I promise to fix this once this is over.”

And using all his might, he tossed the shard at the woman. Distantly he heard the sound of shattering glass. Then a surprised scream.

And then his vision went white as he was hit with a burst of cold.

Knight blinked awake to the feeling of snowflakes melting on his cheeks, he was laying on his back, on the floor of his little boat. groaning, he sat himself up, holding his head as no doubt he’d hit it against something in the encounter.

And when he looked over the edge of the ship he gasped in surprise.

The entire ocean surrounding him was frozen in a thick layer of ice.

He looked around, and soon found the figure who had been trying to drown him moments before.

The Dread Tyrant was frozen solid, her arms covering her face in an attempt to shield herself.

Knight felt his heart fall at the sight. Especially when he knew of her curse.

But somehow, he knew she was alive, she’d survive this.

She had to.

It didn’t make him feel any less guilty however.

Knight stood up. Realizing the boat was pretty much useless having been frozen in ice on all sides, he hesitantly stepped out onto the thick ice. It held his weight, and slowly, he started walking back in the direction of land.

The chill of the area around him doing little to distract his mind as it processes the battle.

But he reminded himself of what all was at stake here.

He’d just have to apologize properly once everyone was back to their usual selves.

That promise to himself was the only thing that kept him from freezing up on the ice before he made it back to land.

And as he returned to his horse and prepared to journey again, that same promise pushed him forward.

He’d find a way to fix this.

But for now, his destination was the Dragon’s Valley. So he saddled up and journeyed on.

“Hang on Fire Spirit, I’m on my way”

Notes:

So I use the cookie run comic maker website to look at character sprites (since the wiki doesn’t update apparently) and it didn’t look like Dread Tyrant sea fairy had any frozen sprites, which is neat. Did becoming a bad guy make her like immune to that? I feel like that might have been explained in some lore event I missed and haven’t looked up yet.

Though I don’t think even darkness can stop Frost Queen’s power.
Or my love of irony

Chapter 5: Searing Heat

Summary:

Knight finally arrives at the Dragons Valley, but what awaits him isn't the usual sight, thankfully, he runs into an old friend.

Notes:

We’re halfway there! Now we’re getting somewhere! Also Uhh taking my own creative liberties for worldbuilding here.
Eh this is already an au. I’ll try and keep everything consistent though.

I sure hope this still was in the once a week loose deadline, wasn’t sure since new years and all that.

Chapter Text

Even when corrupted, Lady moonlight was a being of her word. As Knight traveled along towards the Dragons Valley he had little to no encounters with any cake monsters.

He decided to be grateful for this, as it allowed him to travel quickly. And in a few days time he was at the Valley.

The temperatures were almost unbearably hot as usual, but he was used to it, you come to expect the heat when you visit often enough for one reason or another.

He remembers it being this hot during his first real venture into the land, when he volunteered to fight the red dragon that had been terrorizing the Hollyberry Kingdom for a while now.

Nobody had been eager to face the mighty dragon, especially with Hollyberry still missing, but Knight was loyal to his home and had a fiery drive to protect its people.

Or maybe he was just a spunky teenager who wanted to prove himself, either way he had taken on the quest.

Nobody had expected him to succeed in cutting off the dragon's tail

Even fewer had expected he’d actually manage to kill that very same dragon

He recalls returning to the Mala tribe, the chieftain at the time being very generous in allowing him to make final preparations there before facing the dragon, bloodied and burned, gripping his sword in one hand and the sliced off green tip of the tail in the other before passing out at the tribe’s gates. He also remembers when he came to that princess herself had somehow convinced Pistachio to let her join the group that went to the tribe to retrieve the injured knight.

He also recalls how only the tribe and Princess herself believed he had actually killed the dragon,

He was pretty scrawny at the time...

Knight was kicked out of his thoughts when he suddenly heard a growling, when he looked up he saw a cake monster, it looked like a hound but not any that he’d seen before, it’s body was a magma red and it had dark, ash like icing on top of it, it would flake off as the beast moved.

His horse reared, letting out a frightened whinny as Knight drew his sword and dismounted quickly.

The beast pounced, but Knight was prepared, quickly stabbing it to the ground. As the monster perished it’s body dissolved into ash, the only sign it even existed.

“...what in the world...” Knight mumbled, lifting his sword from the ground. He didn’t recall any monsters like that in the Dragons Valley, could this be recent?

His thoughts went back to Fire spirit.

A part of him hoped this was simply unrelated but...

His attention was captured when he faintly heard the sounds of a battle, he turned in the direction it came from and realized with growing panic it was coming from the direction of the Mala Tribe. He had been heading that way in hopes to result before venturing further into the dragon’s valley, it seems like he better step up the pace.

Quickly mounting his horse again, Knight galloped towards the tribe.

It wasn’t long before he came upon a fierce battle.

Ashy cake monsters were flooding the tribe borders, spicy warriors of various types fought valiantly to hold them back, but the monsters kept coming.

Knight knew they could use all the help they could.

So he rushed ahead. He sliced up several monsters on horseback, they fell to ash at his blade. But one got too close and startled Macaroon, Knight quickly hopped off and slew the beast, his horse fleeing into a less populated area. Knight was quick to adapt, standing his ground as he slew more of the ashen monsters.

A hound fell to his blade, a brute burnt his armor, another down, another replaced it.

It was overwhelming, and Knight couldn’t fight them all alone.

Suddenly, knight heard a battle cry, as a familiar voice called

“Try and handle the SPICE!” And with that the head of an anise star crashed into a group of monsters, reducing them to ashes in moments.

Knight looked up to see Mala Sauce run to him, and soon they were back to back in the fight.

“Mala! What’s going on here?” He asked, pushing back another beast with his sword.

“Can’t explain right now,” Mala replied, swinging her weapon in preparation for another attack. “Mind helping us with the fight?” Knight was sure she knew his answer from that smile on her face, he nodded.

“You have my support.” And with a newfound vigor, the two fought together.

It was while he battled that the man realized just how weak these cake monsters were, one good stab from his sword would have them crumbling, but he supposed strength didn’t matter when you have overwhelming numbers.

Especially when he glanced around and noticed how all the warriors seemed to be tired, it didn’t hamper their ferocious determination to protect their home, however.

Mala knocked out a row of monsters with the head of her anise star,

Knight sliced down three more beasts,

When Mala would stumble, Knight was quick to cover her, and when Knight felt overwhelmed Mala was there to thin the numbers with her fiery weapon.

And slowly but surely, the hoard was whittled down to just a few straggling hounds.

It was when the hoard had been reduced to such low numbers that medical care had started to be sent out, the more wounded fighters being taken in first while the ones with more strength finished off the remaining beasts.

Knight hadn’t realized just how burnt he got until his armor rubbed against his skin and he hissed in pain.

Mala must have noticed more injuries than he did, as she called over one of the tribe medics.

And before he even realized it he had been dragged to what he could only assume was the medical tent. The tribe didn’t exactly have anyone with healing magic but they made do with the supplies they had.

And considering how well bandaged and treated his burns were he’d say they’d be just fine without them.

Though he didn’t miss how overworked the people working the tent looked. It made him almost feel bad for using some of their precious resources. Though he wasn’t able to think about that before Mala Sauce entered the tent.

“Knight! Hey, just the little dragon slayer I was looking for!” She greeted with her usual boisterous smile and a heavy smack on the shoulder, Knight bit back any pain he felt at the friendly gesture.

“Sorry that wasn’t exactly the warmest of welcomes, I’d say we weren’t expecting an attack today but uh, that wouldn’t exactly be the truth” she scratched the back of her neck, knight couldn’t help but notice she didn’t seem as energetic as usual.

“About that, what was that attack about? And what sort of monsters were they? I’ve never seen anything like it” Knight asked. Mala blinked a moment, sighed, than took a seat next to knight on the bench he was sitting at.

“That’s just the thing, these attacks have been happening a lot recently, the tribes been taking to calling them Ashen cakes, cuz’ I’m sure you’ve noticed, they turn to ash when defeated.” Knight nodded, the chieftain continued.

“Though the monsters themselves aren’t strong, with how many keep coming and how often they do, we have been struggling to keep up.” Mala crosses her arms.

“Not to mention there’s been no sign of Fire Spirit since this all started, and even the dragon has been staying away! Which they never do for this long” Knight tried not to look more worried at the talk of a dragon being a usual visitor to the tribe, but Mala herself brags about the tribe battling dragons so he assumed that was the least of her worries.

“Ah but enough about our problems, what brings you out here Knight?” Mala turned back to the other with a grin, Knight sighed a bit, and shifted his potion somewhat.

“I’m looking for Fire Spirit, he’s been out of contact for a while, along with the other legendaries, and people were getting worried. Gingerbrave asked for me to check in with you since I’d be in the area... but I’m fairly sure I’d have come here anyway.” Knight looked forward, determined, yet troubled.

“...I have reason to suspect Fire spirit has been corrupted by darkness, along with the other legendary’s. I’ve already had run-ins with Lady Moonlight and Lady Sea Fairy...” and he was sure Dark Enchantress wouldn’t have just stopped at them.

“I need to find Fire Spirit, and soon” he stated, Mala sighed and leaned back somewhat. Processing everything she had been told.

“...Yikes, that’s... yeah that’s bad” bad is an understatement. She looked back over to Knight,

“If I had to guess, Fire Spirit might be huddled up in his place, it’s pretty deep Into the valley though and the temperatures only get hotter-“

“I can handle the heat” Knight cut in. Mala laughed.

“Oh I don’t doubt that, but we suspect the monsters originate from that direction so that’s not the only thing to be worried about.” She leaned forward again, looking at Knight with a softer expression.

“I don’t think I could stop ya even if I wanted to, so I’m just gonna ask you to recover first before you start traveling. The valley is dangerous even when ash monsters aren’t roaming around.”

Knight nodded, that was a reasonable request. But he looked away, he just had this feeling in his stomach, he had to find fire Spirit. Now. And he couldn’t wait for his wouldn’t to heal.

It’s a good thing he had a solution for that.

Digging into his armor he pulled out one of the golden potions, it’s contents seemed to shine in anticipation. Mala leaned over to look at it when Knight pulled it out.

“What’s that?”

“A healing potion, Alchemist brewed it with Pure Vanilla’s magic.” He simply explained, Mala looked impressed. Though Knight popped the cork and drank the entire thing before she could ask anything else, he felt the warmth of healing magic spread through his body as his wounds healed. Moments later he stood up.

“Woah woah, hold on” Mala stood as well. “What’s the rush for? Even without some potion, aren’t you tired?” Knight knew she was just concerned, but he shook his head.

“I have to find Fire Spirit, now, he needs me. Mala, can you watch my horse while I’m gone? Macaroon doesn’t do well in this environment” Knight had his mind set, he’d be going even if the other argued against it the entire time.

Thankfully she didn’t, she gave a hardy laugh and smacked the other on the back.

“That’s our little dragon slayer! Determined as ever when your minds set! Do what you’ve gotta do Knight, I’ll make sure Mac is taken care of until you get back!” Knight smiled gratefully at the other.

After getting the Okay from one of the medics, Knight was up and moving immediately. Pack over his shoulders as he made the trek deeper into the Dragons Valley. Mala sauce had told him the more direct path to where Fire Spirit’s domain was, and Knight knew if he was quick he could make it before sunset.

The walk, well more like a brisk jog, had been mostly uneventful, the Valley’s major threats were dragons and the scorching heat the place naturally had, So knight wasn’t expecting to find any monsters. Well, aside from those Ashen Cakes, but  it seemed the ones in that hoard were the majority since he didn’t see any of those on his path either.

Not until he reached the edge of a cliff. Across from the small gap was another hoard of those ashy cakes, thankfully they hadn’t noticed him, and frankly he didn’t want to test if they’d jump the gap just to get to him.

“I don’t think I can handle a fight with them... best to go around” Knight mumbled to himself, now how to go about that is the question.

As he paused to debate his next move, that's when a sudden, thunderous roar caught his attention. He froze in place briefly, recognizing it as the call of a dragon.

Though something was different about it.

Before he could even debate investigating, he saw exactly who the voice came from as a burst of pinkish flame cut through several ashen monsters. Not far behind was a wild haired cookie draped in reddish armor. They were crying out in frustration as they swung their sword, easily reducing the monsters to dust.

And just like that the ashen army knight had been worried about was gone.

He could only gape in awe at the power of this person, destroying so many foes with little effort,

Though as he got a better look at the figure a slow realization dawned on him. Their armor was a familiar red, with a spiked helmet and pointed ears, white, dotted hair pulled back in a loose ponytail which barely held back their wild mane, said spotted hair also served to cover their wings. However it did nothing to cover their tail which had an unmistakable end to it.

It was cut off just where it would have faded into green.

Knight was sure he went as pale as his armor.

That couldn’t be possible, there was no way that this being could be.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, he recalled Wizard cookie talking about some old dragon legend, where when some ancient dragons died they got reincarnated into a human form. Still retaining some of their power and memories even in a weaker state. Simply biding their time as their strength slowly returned.

It's just his luck that this legend turned out to be true.

As the greenish red dragon finally turns to the human, and Knight is face to face with Pitaya Dragon.

The same red dragon he slew years ago.

Notes:

Haha no fire spirit yet, you get a dragon
Speaking of: I sort of did my own thing with the cookie dragon lore for my cookie run stuff, basic idea is for a dragon to get that human/cookie form, they’ve had to have died. Dragons live stupid long but aren’t immortal.
And they aren’t immune to getting killed in various ways.

Also listen, Knight can be a little badass as a treat, he’s just cursed to never be taken seriously for it by most people.

Anyhow, as always let me know of any spelling or grammar mistakes, comments are always appreciated!
See ya next week ^_^

Chapter 6: Cindering Ashes

Summary:

Knight finally finds Fire Spirit

Notes:

Knights not having a good day let’s be honest here

Also gonna apologize if Pitaya seems a little out of character here, I uh, I’m gonna say that’s intentional since uhhh au reasons.

Anyhow enjoy!

Chapter Text

Knight didn’t move a mussel, one hand gripping the hilt of his sword as he and the dragon had a silent stare down. His mind was racing, did the dragon recognize him? Would this turn into a fight? He hoped it didn’t but Knight was prepared to battle if he had to. He’s fought human opponents before, how different could a dragon-like human be?

...very, he supposed, they decimated an entire field of monsters with ease.

Knight was prepared to draw his sword when the other opened their maw to speak.

Though what was said completely blindsided him.

“Oh and who are you supposed to be? You’re clearly not from the mala tribe!” The dragon exclaimed, looking frustrated. Knight blinked in surprise but kept his defensive stance. But he only managed to make a noise of confusion before the dragon lifted their arms and started ranting.

“I knew they were struggling due to these sudden attacks but to send some weak looking human to face me?? This is insssssulting!” They hissed out the last word, kicking up a pile of ash that used to be a monster.

“These ssssstupid monsters show up and distract the tribe so they’re not able to battle me at full ssstrength! Then I decide to make their fight easier by handling some of these waves myself, but these ssssoot beings don’t even put up a fight!!” The dragon hissed and stomped their foot on the ashes while growling, knight couldn’t help but call the scene a tantrum.

“I’ve been starved of a good fight for too long! And these pathetic ash beings are to blame! I can’t even talk to Fire Spirit as they’ve shut me out! And now ssssome pathetic knight comes to challenge me! You aren’t even worth the effort!” And with that they looked back at the human, glaring, though after a beat, their wings flared and they suddenly grumbled.

“...you’re not even here to fight me, are you human?” At this point they just look... tired, frustrated and exhausted.

Not something Knight would have expected from a dragon, even one turned human-ish. But slowly, he shook his head.

“No, I’ve been traveling to find Fire Spirit myself.”

“Oh great, wonderful! Praise the sun! This is bullshit..” Pitaya’s tone was drenched in sarcasm as they grumbled and turned away, kicking at a rock at their feet before falling into quiet muttering.

Knight is absolutely reeling. Of all the outcomes he’d anticipated for this interaction, the great red dragon throwing a tantrum about having crummy fights was not one of them.

Nor them seemingly not recognizing him... Knight decided he’s going to be glad about not being recognized for his acts for once.

Especially if it means he doesn’t have to fight this dragon... again. So with a somewhat relieved sigh, Knight took a step back.

“Well... I should get moving then-“

But almost as if they remembered the human was there, Pitaya turned back around.

“Now hold on there, little knight! I’m not done with you” the man flinched, but looked back towards the larger being,

“You spoke of Fire Spirit...Why are you looking for him anywaysss?” Pitaya glared at the human in suspicion, if Knight didn’t know any better he would have almost called it some sort of protectiveness.

When this whole situation is over Knight is asking Fire spirit why he never told him that Pitaya was still around, especially if they have some sort of bond.

“Because he’s my partner, and has been missing with no contact for several weeks now. I’m worried about his well being.” Knight answered honestly. He decided to leave out the part about suspecting he was corrupted however, if this dragon does seem to care about Fire Spirit it’d be best not to worry them for now.

Said dragon seemed to process this information. Blinked once. Then exclaimed,

“Wait... you’re the human Fire Spirit is dating?” The dragon blinked in disbelief.

“W-what’s that supposed to mean??” Knight snapped back, feeling suddenly defensive at the tone the other used.

Pitaya looked the human up and down a moment, before squinting, then shrugging.

“Not sure what he sees in you.”

“Hey!”

Knight did not come here to be judged by a dragon who seemingly knew his boyfriend and had some unspecified bond with them!

But he quietly huffed and turned away, he didn’t have time for petty squabbles he had a field to cross!

Albeit a flaming one.

With all the ash monsters gone he could get a proper view of the terrain, and Mala Sauce was not kidding when she said it only gets hotter. Amongst the heat were fire geysers that erupted at various intervals, ravines that hissed with steam, various lava pits that bubbled, and of course with the added threat of ash monsters appearing, travel would be no easy feat.

But if it meant getting away from a bratty dragon then he would deal with it.

Knight started walking away, unsure exactly how he’d cross such dangerous terrain but he was determined.

However he didn’t get far before the dragon yelled.

“Oh no you don’t!” And with one hand they picked up the knight like a kitten. The human yelled in surprise as Pitaya placed him next to them.

“You can’t just walk there! You’ll end up burnt alive before you make it twenty feet!” They exclaimed, Knight crossed his arms, he’s getting really tired with this cookie by now.

“Do I have any other choice? Now if you’ll excuse me I’ve got to keep moving.”

“Oh no you’re not! I’m not letting you walk to Fire Spirits place!” They huffed, placing themselves between Knight and the direction he was going, yet before the human could say anything the dragon pointed to themself.

“I’m going to fly you there! Got it?”

Knight blanked.

“...what!?”

“You got cotton in your ears? I’m flying you there! It’s faster and you won’t die halfway there!” Pitaya seemed to have made up their mind, which only left Knight even more confused.

“Why??” Knight found himself asking, the dragon huffed and looked away.

“Look, Fire spirit clearly cares about you, so you’re likely the only human who can talk him out of whatever the hell has gotten into him.” They shuffled a bit on their feet, tail twitching, before they grumbled. “And I’m not... good... at the talking... thing.... So I can’t do it.”

Knight would have sworn the other looked almost embarrassed to be admitting that. But before he really got the chance to process it, the dragon spun to face away from knight, their wings becoming engulfed with a red flame before they became larger, Pitaya looked back at the human and called,

“Well come on then! The sooner you get there the sooner this mess gets fixed and the sooner I can battle the Mala tribe again!” Knight felt himself reeling once again but decided it would be unwise to decline this offer. Especially when oh so generously given to him by a dragon. So with a nod he jogged over, hopping onto the others back.

Pitaya took a moment to make sure the other was secure before saying.

“You better hold on tight, because if you fall I’m not catching you!” And that was the only warning knight got before they took off.

Knight kept his head down as the dragon flew through the air, wind rushing past as they soared through the skies. He was holding on tight as if he’d slip off at any moment. Pitaya apparently found this amusing as they let out a laugh.

“Not a fan of flying little knight?” They teased, Knight just managed to gather himself enough to find his voice, all so he could stumble out.

“J-Just let me know when we get there”

The other only laughed again, and knight could have sworn they started flying faster

Knight wasn’t sure how long they had been flying, couldn’t have been longer than a few minutes, it felt like hours with how he was holding on for dear life,

But Knight felt when they had moved to hover in the air, an hesitantly dared to look up.

When he did he spotted Fire Spirits home.

It was an old castle fortress he found and then decided to clean up since ‘it looked way too cool to just leave’ and honestly, for fixing it up mostly himself Knight had to admit it looked pretty solid.

Though the dark bricks making up the walls felt colder for some reason.

It did not help how the place was swarming with ashen cakes

Pitaya hissed as they gazed at those ash monsters swarming the place, however it didn’t look like an attack like they did to the Mala tribe... Knight hummed in thought.

“Mala Sauce’s suspicions must have been right, they do seem to be originating from here” which made it a very real possibility Fire Spirit was behind this.. or even made these monsters.

“Of course She was right, that human’s got a good head on her shoulders!” Pitaya retorted, Knight wasn’t entirely sure what to make of that but shook his head.

“Regardless! There’s too many of them”

“Don’t doubt my strength, I can take them!” Pitaya grinned with eager confidence, but Knight had a feeling. He didn’t know much about corruption, but he heard it works with what the person already feels, making them into their worst self.

But still their true self was underneath it all.

And if his suspicions about fire spirit being at the head of these monsters were right.

“Let me try something first” Knight found himself speaking, Pitaya glanced back at them in surprise.

“...You’re kidding?”

“Weren’t you the one who said Fire Spirit would listen to me? Let me try that first... if it doesn’t work then we do your plan”

“Your funeral, little knight” the dragon huffed, but after circling the fortress once more they found a spot to land. Knight slid off the others back as he looked out at the scene.

They were near one of the gates, ash monsters turned their attention to the duo. Pitaya has their sword out, growling with anticipation.

Knight kept his sword in its hilt. He noticed something almost immediately, none of the monsters were attacking, even though some looked very eager to.

So taking in a breath, he called out.

“Fire Spirit! I’m here, let me in!” His voice echoed off of the walls, and for several moments, there was silence.

And then there was the creek of the gates opening, and the ashen cakes stepping aside.

Knight had to fight back the proud smirk he wanted to give the dragon for proving them wrong, but now wasn’t the time.

“...well then...” Pitaya grumbled, both surprised and disappointed apparently. Knight gave them a glance then stepped forward, crossing the threshold into the palace.

Knight had only been to Fire Spirit’s place once before, he remembers it being brighter, livelier, and hotter.

It felt like walking through a familiar place that had changed suddenly. The inside was dimly lit, various torches threatening to go out with a simple gust of wind. And the place was noticeably cooler, especially when compared to the outside. Knight shivered, but he couldn’t tell if it was from unease or the chill.

Even if some called this place a fortress, it wasn’t very big. Fire Spirit bragged about how he found this place ages ago and worked to renovate it himself, and even a legendary cookie with a lot of time on his hands can only do so much on his own.

Which made it easy for Knight to find the main areas. The hallway opened up into what he could only call a throne room, it was decorated as such, with singed curtains and banners, as well as a few posters and drawings taped onto the wall. It was pretty clear someone much younger than him had been the artist.

But Knight didn’t let himself linger too long, he saw his destination ahead, he had no doubt Fire spirit was in there.

Waiting

His pulse raced with anticipation, but he kept his guard up. He didn’t want this to turn into a fight, but it was best to be prepared for one regardless.

And so he stepped past the arching entrance

And when he looked up towards the center of the room, he saw him,

Fire Spirit

But he didn’t look like himself, he had on a bulky cape with shoulder pads reminiscent of a bat, and generally his body looked darker, duller, ashen, especially compared to the bright orange and reds he usually was. His once flaming hair looked to be nothing but smoke, only a few remaining glows of cinders indicating the fire hadn’t died out, knight suspected he could actually touch it now.

The Lord Of Ash looked over, no charismatic smirk on his once lively face. But he almost seemed amused when he greeted.

“Hey Knighty...”

Knight couldn’t hold himself back. He couldn’t stand to see Spirit like this. What had the Enchantress done to him to cause his endless fire to nearly go out?

Knight ran over to the other, disregarding his own safety as he reached for him.

There was no resistance as Knight gently cupped the Ash Lord's face with his hands.

“Oh Fire Spirit”

Slowly, the other leaned into the touch, sighing.

“I didn’t want you to see me like this...”

His tone was one of despair, and yet a quiet acceptance. Knight got the distinct feeling he had been hiding himself away on purpose.

Gently, Knight pushed one of those stray cinder hairs behind Spirit’s pointed ear.

“What happened? Who did this to you? It was Dark Enchantress wasn’t it?” Knight spoke, concern dripping from his voice.

The other pulled away slightly, as he recalled the events.

“I... was ambushed, she must have messed with my place as a trap... got me alone and... I couldn’t escape the dark.” The Lord Of Ash looked to the side, not meeting Knights gaze,

All for the best, as Knight’s expression fell.

An ambush, a cowardly tactic, yet effective as it worked to corrupt them all.

He knew very well how hard it was to fight off an army on your own.

“I should have been there with you-“ Knight found himself muttering, all at once Spirit’s gaze was back on him, a brief look of panic in his eyes.

“Knighty... Knighty, no she would have gotten you too... or worse” the Lord Of Ash gently held the hand still on his cheek.

“And... knowing you were still out there.. alive and safe, away from her reach... it’s the only thing that kept me going like this.” There was a dark chuckle, knight felt his heart ache.

Fire spirit was always one to fight to the bitter end,

And even when his flame threatened to flicker out, he was still holding on by a threat.

Knight wondered how much longer he could last.

“I’m going to save you,” Knight declared. Determination flaring. “I’ll find a way to save you, and the others! No matter what it takes. I promise!” Fire burned in the human’s eyes. That spark of hope that the Lord of Ash had lost in the darkness.

Slowly, the other cracked a smile.

“I know you will Knight'' And with that, he leaned forward. Pressing a gentle kiss on the man's forehead.

Knight felt a warmth settle in his chest at the action, but it was unfamiliar, almost burning, red hot magic, almost like.

Knight gave a quiet gasp, but before he could ask the other spoke.

“I don’t know what lies ahead for you, but you’ll no doubt have to face Her soon. I’d be a terrible partner if I didn’t try and help how I could.” Fire spirit placed his free hand where Knights heart was, where the fire burned just under the skin.

“So, I gave you my blessing. I can only hope it’ll keep you safe...”

Finally, hesitantly, the two separated. The Lord Of Ash sighed and tapped his staff on the floor.

“...I’ll try and hold out as long as I can, but I don’t think the Enchantress will be happy when she realizes I’ve stopped making monsters for her...”

“Then I’ve got no time to lose” knight nodded.

“I have to find Wind Archer first though.” He needed to, he needed to be sure of his fate, Spirit seemed to understand this and hummed.

“Do what you have to, I haven’t seen him since...” Since he got corrupted, Knight realized. He reached forward and took the other’s hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

“When this is over, we’ll all get together and do something. Maybe a picnic? The Hollyberry kingdom should be harvesting the berries in the soda sea by now” knight gave a small smile, the ash lord hummed,

“...a bit early to think about celebrations isn’t it?...”

“It’s never too early to hope for the future” Knight smiles, the other rolled his eyes, that brief smile had fallen by now. But he looked serious as he said.

“Pitaya flew you here right? Ask them to fly you to Archie’s forest, it’ll be faster... tell them it’s a favor to me if they get huffy about it”

Knight nodded, deciding now was not the time to ask about Fire spirit and Pitaya's apparent friendship. So finally, hesitantly, he let go of the others hand.

“I’ll find you when this is settled.” Knight promised, and with that, Knight hesitantly pulled away.

Before Knight left the room, he gave one final look back at the Lord Of Ash, the other giving a small wave which the man returned.

He hoped when this was over, he’d never find himself in a situation where Spirit looked that hopeless ever again.

The walk down those cold hallways was silent, save for the echoes of his footsteps, his mind racing as he processed everything.

He had to find Wind Archer,

Fire Spirit didn’t have much time left,

How long until he Enchantress realizes the Dread Tyrant has been frozen,

And how long did he have until the enchantress enacted some unknown plan?

He didn’t have any answers, he just had his own part to play, he had better start thinking of solutions soon, for everyone’s sake.

And as Knight stepped out of the fortress, the gates closing behind him, a fiery resolve burned in his chest.

He’d find a way to save everyone, to save Fire Spirit.

And as he looked over at the dragon, who surprisingly had been patiently waiting this whole time, his resolve only burned brighter.

It was time to head to Wind Acher’s forest.

Double upload? More likely than you think.

This part is a bit on the shorter side buuuut I’m gonna blame it on wanting a bit more time for the next part.

Chapter Text

The flight to the forest was thankfully silent, Knight wasn’t sure if Pitaya was simply staying quiet because they were lost in their own thoughts, or was actually being curious towards the human.

But maybe that would be giving the dragon too much credit.

They touched down at the edge of the forest, announcing the landing with a huff.

“Alright, this is as far as I’m taking you. I’m fairly sure that Archer doesn’t like me and I’d rather not be shot at today.” Knight nodded as he slid off the others back.

“Thank you, again, Pitaya.” Knight spoke to the other, he was genuinely grateful for the dragon apparently feeling generous. So he gave a small nod in thanks.

Pitaya huffed and looked away. Mumbling something about not worrying about it.

There was a brief silence between the two, which would have made for an awkward partin, but the human thought of something first.

“Pitaya,” Knight spoke, causing the other to glance over. “Could you... keep an eye on Spirit? I think they could use the company of a friend right now...” the other blinked at him before huffing.

“You speak like I wasn’t intending to do that anyway.” Knight couldn’t help but chuckle softly at that response, at least they did care.

So with that the dragon turned to leave, wings flared ready for takeoff

Pitaya glanced back once, looking at Knight before saying.

“...don’t die.” Before they flew back into the air and headed back home.

Knight watched them leave for a few moments, before turning towards the forest and walking.

The tree line became thicker as the leaves blocked out more of the sky, and soon enough he was surrounded by shades of green.

Knight was somewhat familiar with these woods by now, he’d have to be if he was visiting Wind Archer so often. But the usually familiar forest felt oddly suffocating, unwelcoming, even to him. The canopy overhead blocking out a little too much light, the far stretches of trees felt like a wall, blocking out something or someone, his mind wondered if some feral beast was lurking, wishing to attack.

And yet he knew nothing like that lingered in the archers woods, Wind Archer himself made sure of that.

Knight wanted to feel confident in saying even under the influence of darkness, Archer would keep up his duty, he always did say that he was born for this...

Knight fidgeted with the strap of his pack as he walked, his mind buzzing with various thoughts. None good unfortunately.

He needed to focus, anything to keep himself from worrying.

He still had to come up with a plan on how he’d fix all of this..

So he started brainstorming. Recalling some of the various magic lectures he’d attended, or overheard from Espresso, he started from there.

Dark magic is a very corruptive force, which is why it’s generally frowned upon to practice it. But other Magic’s can be used to repel it’s effects.

Namely, Light magic, it’s opposite.

One big glaring issue though, Knight can’t do magic, period. He just never had the aptitude for it.

But if he could find someone who was able to use magic, specifically light magic....

Knight stopped in his tracks briefly at a realization.

“...maybe I should have let Madeleine come with me...” he grumbled as he sighed into his hands.

It was just his luck that he refused the help of one of the most proficient light magic users he knows

Perhaps even the only one.

The more reasonable side of his brain tried to remind him he had no idea he’d need his help, corruption via dark magic wasn’t a thought on anyone’s minds. Yet he still felt like a fool to brush the other off so quickly

With a sigh he started walking again. Best think out his options if he wanted to get Madeleine.

His horse was at the Mala tribe, and if he was lucky he could find Wind archer in a day or so, meaning he’d have to travel back through the dragon's valley on foot...

He doubted Pitaya would be waiting for him so he’d have to take the long way, that could take him a day or two, maybe even three if he had to face ashen cakes.

Taking into account the several days' travel it’d take to get back to the kingdom... and then who knows how long it’d take to find all the corrupted legendary’s again. It’d take too long

He didn’t know if he had that much time to spare

And this is all assuming that Dark Enchantress doesn’t have something planned, who knows how long until she acts upon something dastardly, the cookie kingdom was weakened without its heaviest hitters, she could strike it directly...

They wouldn’t be able to survive a direct attack like that if she used the legendaries against them

Knight froze in place again. Shaking his head to try and clear his thoughts. He was likely overthinking but, the possibility was there.

“...I need to solve this quickly then” he concluded. Returning to the kingdom just to get Madeleine would take too long, could he find a messenger bluebird and send one? Being able to meet the light magic user halfway?

That might still take too long, he thought of he state The Lord Of Ash was in.

He didn’t have much time left,

Knight didn’t have the time to spare,

There wasn’t enough time

There wasn’t enough time to save them-

Knight took in a deep breath to try and calm himself.

He couldn’t risk thinking like that.

Not now

So he pushed those doubts and fears away, he still had a mission to fulfill

“...I think, I need to set up camp for the night” he resolved, perhaps it was a bit early but clearly, he needed another distraction before his own thoughts pulled him down into a state of panic.

So finding a good spot, he did just that.

It didn’t take him too long to get everything set up, it had become second nature for him to set up camp by now. So as Knight sat on the forest floor, tending to his blade, his thoughts drifted to Wind Archer.

Archer was very dedicated to his duty, sometimes to the point of shooting first asking questions later. Knight knew he had a king heart at his core, but the darkness would make it near impossible to reach that...

Knight had a distinct feeling that he would have to find Archer. He dreaded that thought, last thing he wanted to do was hurt someone he loved, but unlike Fire Spirit who was more more of a chatty fella, archer was a man of action,

Knight would have to prepare for a fight.

A part of him still hoped Archer would listen to reason like Spirit did.

But Knight knew that was wishful thinking

Notes:

It’s a real shame timekeeper is unreliable when it comes to showing up, I’m sure they would have made this whole story shorter.

But that’s no fun is it? :)

Chapter 8: Raven Wings

Summary:

Knight finds Wind Archer

Notes:

We’re in the home stretch, wonder if I can finish this before the end of the month?

Okay I won’t make any promises for that, I’m already writing this at like 2 in the morning

Chapter Text

Knight was up and moving faster than he thinks he’s ever been. He wasn’t sure if it was his own nerves acting up, or if it was something else.

He had the distinct feeling he was being watched.

No not watched,

Hunted

With that unpleasant thought on his mind he found himself packed and moving again in minutes.

Though even as he traveled, he kept his hand firmly on his sword hilt. That feeling of being watched never going away.

He was starting to think finding Wind Archer wouldn’t be hard,

Especially if the other was apparently looking for him too.

There was the snap of a twig, and Knight turned around just in time to see a purple arrow fire towards him, he jumped out of the way, just barely getting his armor scratched.

Looking up in the trees is when he saw him.

Wind Archer

His usual greens were replaced with purples, and he had some sort of dark bodysuit on, the most notable difference however, were the dark colored wings on his back.

It reminded Knight of a raven.

He couldn’t see the others eyes behind the ominous visor on his head, but that didn’t stop the human from taking in a breath to speak.

“Archer-“ Knight’s cut off as another arrow wizzes past his head. He just barely dodged. It was like his words weren’t getting through to him.

It didn’t help that Night Raven hadn’t said a word since he appeared. The gem on his forehead glowing the same ominous purple as his visor.

It’s like the other didn’t even recognize who he was!

With that any hope of a peaceful resolution was thrown out of the window, Knight readied his sword.

“I don’t want to fight-“ once again Knight was cut off by an arrow he had to dodge, this one coming a bit too close to his leg.

Night Raven had made it very clear that he wasn’t listening to him, then Knight supposed he’d have to find a way to make him listen.

So with a dash forward Knight swung up at the archers legs. With a flap of those wings he dodged and landed on another branch, already pulling back the string of his bow to fire again.

Wind Archer was a ranged fighter, he never stayed too close in striking range, that was part of the reason he and knight fought so well together, they could support each other's weaknesses in battle, Knight handling the close range while Archer shot enemies down from a distance.

It made it frustrating, however, when fighting him one on one, especially if you’re like Knight and don’t fight with anything long range.

Okay, keep it together Knight, come up with a plan.

He dodged out of the way of another arrow by hiding behind a larger tree, the cover wouldn’t last him long, as he heard the others' wings flapping, meaning Night Raven was moving.

Knight knew to move when he heard the near silent rustle of feathers and a string pulling back. The man dodged yet again as Purple arrows lodged themselves into the tree he was just hiding behind.

Frantically, he looks around for the other, the Raven’s darker colors allowing him to blend into the shadows far more effectively than Wind Archer’s previous green pallet did with the leaves.

Knight isn’t sure if he finds that impressive or unnerving.

But as he just barely misses another arrow grazing his arm he spots the attacker again, the just barely visible glow of the gem and visor giving away his location.

And once again, Knight has his focus drawn to the unsettling glow of that visor, something is off about it.

Could that be that visor is what’s keeping Raven from recognizing him?

With no other ideas Knight decided that would be his goal,

He needed to break that visor.

But now he was back at the issue of trying to get close to someone who was a ranged fighter.

If he had something he could throw at the other..

Knight rolled out of the way of another arrow, it whizzing past his ear. Out of reflex he looked back at it, and noticed how it dissolved into a purple light moments after hitting the ground. Seems Archers’s arrows still did that, even like this.

Unless Knight wanted to start throwing rocks, he knew using one of Night Raven’s arrows against him was his best option,

He sidestepped another arrow that took a chip out of his armor

But unless he wanted to take a hit and pull the arrow out, which he didn't, that work hurt and who knows how long it’d take, he was going to have to catch the arrow in the air.

That…would be a very risky move...

He’s attempted riskier

So he took up the defensive.

There was the sound of wings flapping as the other moved again. Knight steadied himself, listening closely to his surroundings,

He could hear his own heart thumping against his chest as he tried to pinpoint where the other was. Listening for any sound that would give away their location.

So Knight held his breath and listened.

There was a near silent sound as an arrow was released.

In a quick move Knight turned towards it and made a grab.

He caught the arrow in mid air, he could feel the magic from it burn into his gauntlet

But he didn’t let that distract him, as in another quick move Knight turned towards the archer and hurled the arrow back at him.

His aim was true, and the arrow hit its target.

There was the sound of shattering glass as Night Raven's visor was shattered, finally revealing his eyes. They looked almost dazed, but soon they were shut as Wind Archer collapsed to the forest floor.

Knight felt his heart drop at the sight. Immediately, he was running to his side.

“Archer!”

Knight fell to his knees and gently scooped the other into his lap, supporting the wind beings head with his arms.

There was a soft groan from the other as he slowly blinked his eyes open. Bright purple eyes took a moment to focus before looking up at the human holding him. Knight felt hope spark when recognition shone in those eyes.

“...Knight? What are you doing here?” Raven asked, then suddenly seemed to jump as he glanced around the scene of the battle.

“...how long have you been here?...did I attack you?” The other looked both concerned and a bit embarrassed at that comment, but Knight didn’t mind it. An overwhelming mix of emotions flooded his system as he pulled the other into a tight hug.

“Archer! Oh Archer.” The other quickly returned the hug, holding the human just as tightly.

“I... I'm truly sorry if I hurt you, my dear Knight, I couldn’t recognize that it was you.”

He wasn’t sure exactly why, maybe it was Knight finally knowing for sure what became of his partners, maybe it was the overwhelming relief that they both recognized him, or maybe it was the fear and uncertainty he had buried before finally deciding to return to the forefront.

But when he heard Archer speak, it was like the floodgates had snapped, and Knight found himself unable to stop the tears that started to flow.

Archer was always the best at comforting Knight when he was at his lowest, maybe a part of him thought he needed it.

Whatever the reason, he found himself crying, and before the other could pull back and ask what was wrong, he was speaking.

“I’m, I’m so sorry Archer” Knight hiccuped, the other shook his head.

“Why are you apologizing?.. I attacked you first” Raven tilted his head slightly, concern clear on his face, but Knight shook his head

“It’s-its not just that” He sobbed, trying to wipe away the tears that wouldn’t stop, his fears bubbling to the surface,

What if he failed, he had no plan,

He was their hope and he had nothing,

“I don’t know what to do, I want to save you, and Fire Spirit, and everyone else, but I don’t have enough time! The only light magic user I know is back at the kingdom, and who knows how long I have until She does something drastic.”

Time. Time had become his enemy in every plan. He didn’t have the time to travel for help, and he couldn’t solve this on his own.

This was a battle he couldn’t win.

Had He come all this way just to fail?

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I failed. I failed you, I failed Fire Spirit, and Sea fairy, and Moonlight, and the entire kingdom. I can’t fix this- not on my own- I’m just one useless knight!”

“Oh Knight...” Raven mumbled softly, gently reaching up to wipe the tears rolling down the others cheeks, how long had he been holding in a breakdown like this? He wondered, so he moved to hold the other, rubbing circles into his back, providing a silent comfort as he sobbed.

Yet even still, The Night Raven quietly thought, light magic can purge the darkness from his and the others' systems, but they needed someone powerful, and fast, the kingdom was too far away, and he didn’t know of any others nearby who knew light magic and were willing to help...

Well there was one,

his mind could only think of one being who could help.

It was risky but what other choice did they have?

Making his decision, Night Raven nodded to himself. Knight had managed to collect himself somewhat now, just quietly sobbing into the others shoulder. Though he senses that Archer had something to say, as he pulled back somewhat to look at his partner. Archer had a resolved look in his eyes.

“...listen closely, dear Knight, I have an idea” the archer suddenly spoke, looking directly at the human. Knight slowly nodded, he knew that look in the others eyes. Holding the humans face with both of his hands, Raven spoke, his words held a sudden weight as they were said

“You need to seek out the Millennial Tree,”

Knight’s eyes widened, he knew of Archer's duty to protect the slumbering being, he was devoted enough that he didn’t even like himself or Fire spirit anywhere near the other.

Not that anyone could just walk to where the tree slumbered, no doubt some ancient magic kept him hidden from the world, as he safely slumbered.

He knew the other wasn’t asking this of him lightly.

“But, but isn't he still asleep?” Knight found himself asking, even if he did find the tree, what can a sleeping god do to help?

Raven expected this question, and nodded,

“Yes, He is due to wake up soon, but it will be too late when he does. Listen close, I was told of a way to wake him early.” And archer leaned closer to whisper the spell into the other ear.

Knight could tell that some powerful magic was held in those words, as he felt the incantation burn itself into his memory, as well as suddenly knowing exactly where the sleeping being lay.

Knight shivered from the ancient magic he beheld.

“He said only to use this for emergencies,” Archer said as he pulled away. “And I believe this is one.”

“Wind Archer..”

“The darkness that tainted me must have kept me away from his slumbering place due to the magic around it, I cannot seek him out myself... if I ended up leading the Enchantress to him I couldn’t live with myself...” Raven looked away, almost looking guilty. Knight felt that spark of resolve again as he understood what the other was saying.

“I’ll do it, I’ll find him. You have my word” archer looked back, smiling softly at the others words.

And once again he felt hopeful.

Archer pressed their foreheads together and closed his eyes, and like with Fire Spirit, Knight felt something powerful settle in his chest, a magic as strong as the wind that bellowed in the sky.

“My dear knight, take my blessing, and find the Great Tree, you’re our only hope now”

Perhaps it was the magic that was in his system, but he felt his worries weren’t as big now,

He had a plan,

He had a solution.

And he knew he could do it. So with a steady nod, Knight set his resolve solid.

The archer pulled away after a moment, a worried expression settling on their face.

“I don’t know when the darkness will cloud my vision again...” Raven looked to the side, and Knight had a feeling he knew what the other was implying.

He’d start hunting the human again when that happened,

So Knight needed a head start.

Pressing a quick kiss to the other’s cheek, Knight hesitantly pulled away.

“I won’t be long,” he promised. He wished their parting wasn’t this rushed, but they both knew they were on borrowed time.

“May your journey be swift and safe” Raven stated while pulling himself to his feet, before turning away and flying off in the opposite direction. He was ensuring that there was as much distance between them before the darkness took hold again.

Knight decided he could not let this opportunity go to waste. So he stood up, wiping his face clean with his arm. That ancient magic in his mind gently coaxed him in the direction he needed to go.

That same magic whispered that he wasn’t far.

And so he decided to run. He had no time to waste.

Wind Archer was counting on him,

Fire Spirit was waiting for him,

And with his partners on his mind he let his feet carry him through the woods.

He was going to wake the Millennial Tree

Notes:

Sometimes ya just gotta get a good cry out of your system before you go and wake a god

..also is Night Raven out of character? Does it even count if the character doesn’t like say anything? Eh, whatever, Wind Archer was a man of few words before hand.

As always, let me know of any spelling or grammar mistakes, comments are appreciated ^_^

Or maybe I’m just putting pressure on myself since this is the final fight and I want it to feel cool

Either way hope you’ll enjoy

ALSO UHHH
blood warning, and general violence warning, gonna say gore too but that’s probably minor

Chapter Text

Knight refused to let himself stop to rest, he knew he was close, the powerful magic resting in his mind whispering how close he was.

He could rest when this was over.

So he continued through the forest, the trees getting thicker, he couldn’t see the sky anymore, and he had the distinct feeling that he would have gotten horribly lost had it not been for the magic guiding him.

A part of him wondered if that was the intention of whatever magic protected this place along with Wind Archer himself.

But soon enough, he stepped into a clearing.

A peaceful looking grove, with flowers and tree roots spread about.

And the thick roots lead back to one place, a large tree that reached into the sky, its bark twisting, almost forming a cocoon.

Knight could feel the magic radiating from it.

This had to be the Millennial Tree.

Slowly, he walked up to the base of the tree, the roots dug deep into the ground, he wondered just how far they reached.

Carefully, he put one hand onto the tree, and recited the spell burnt into his memory.

Moments after it faded from his mind, like a whisper.

And knight held his breath for it to take effect

Beats pasted.

Nothing.

Knight shook his head. No no he definitely did it right, then why was nothing happening?

He looked down at the ground, then noticed one of the large roots, some gold ruins were duly glowing, Pulsing with power. Was that like it before?

But he wasn’t given the time to think any further when he heard growling.

And then a cackle.

And creeping out of the darkness of the forest, approached a hoard of cake monsters, growling and snarling, eager for a fight.

And above them, riding atop her staff, was Dark Enchantress.

Knight's first instinct was to try and attack her, but the monsters below would have devoured him alive if he even tried, so he could only glare harshly at the enchantress.

She only cackled in amusement,

“Well now, I guess I should thank you. This old tree had been a real pain to find, but who knew it was as simple as following a foolish little knight.” The Enchantress grinned.

“Now I can destroy the one being who can stop my plans before he even knows what hit him! I can’t thank you enough~”

Knight stood his ground, albeit confused, How has she gotten so close? But then he processed what she had said,

Knight felt himself seethe

“You followed me??” He yelled, a few of the monsters growled louder at his outburst, they looked all too eager to rip him apart. But the enchantress raised her hand and they went silent, she tutted,

“You think I wouldn’t take notice of someone messing with my newest minions? I worked hard to corrupt them all!” She glared, knight wanted to squirm under that hard look, but he kept himself still, she continued, leaning back on her staff,

“That old tree won’t fall to darkness and he’s also the one thing threatening my Ambitions, so it’s better if he was dead” she waved her hand casually, then gave a dark grin.

Knight had heard enough, he had come too far to just let the Dark Enchantress get what she wanted, and what kind of knight would he be if he didn’t protect others?

Knight drew his sword.

“If you think I’ll just stand here and let you harm the Millennial Tree, then you must be the fool!” He declared, loud enough that he knew the other would hear, perhaps even more of the monsters too. Dark enchantress growled at that, scowling.

“And what can one messily knight do?” The enchantress challenged, Knight didn’t back down, standing his ground. She raised an arm,

“Kill him” she commanded, and the monsters pounced.

Next thing he knew he was fighting off cake after cake, blocking as many attacks as he was dealing, the horde eager to reach him and rip him limb from limb.

But he wouldn’t let that happen, he couldn’t, he couldn’t die here. A hound bit his leg, he kicked it away, attack after attack against his armor.

There was no end in sight to the monsters.

And the tree behind him still had yet to move.

Knight cookie huffed, raising his sword to block another attack, he shoved the cake hound away, only for another to take its place. It was hopeless, the monsters kept coming and surely they’d overtake the Millennial tree. But a part of him was sure... that spell had worked, it’s just taking a while...

he glanced back at the roots, they looked to be glowing brighter than before. Hope sparked in his mind,

The spell hasn’t failed, it just needed time to warm up.

Which means he has to defend the tree until he wakes. A new resolve burnt in his chest, hot as fire and raging like the wind. Knight dug into his armor and  pulled out the final healing potion he had been giving. Ripping the cork off with his teeth he chugged the entire elixir, immediately he felt his wounds start to close and heal, knight pulled himself to his feet.

“As long as I can still fight, I will not allow you to harm the Millennial Tree!” He declared, a newfound power searing itself in his chest,

It burned like fire

It raged like the wind

A blazing fury overtaking his heart

His sword started to glow a mix of red and green. And as he struck the next cake monster to attack a beam was launched from his sword, slicing several cake monsters behind the one he attacked.

The Dark Enchantress blinked in surprise, then scowled.

“I should have known they’d have given you their blessing. No matter,” she raised her arm and more cake monsters appeared out of dark portals.

“You’ll fall all the same”

Knight was moving immediately. Going for the monsters closest to him he lunged and stabbed at them, a sharp beam of fire launching out from the attack, like an arrow being shot, it pierced the monster, as well as others behind it.

And without pausing, knight moved to swipe at the cake wolves to his side, launching a few away with a fiery wind that launched from his blade, more monsters falling to his attacks.

A few of the less brave cake hounds whined and scurried away, not wanting to face someone who was blessed by two forces of nature,

Yet others remained steadfast.

Fire raged, wind roared, claws scratched against his armor, weapons clashing together.

Even with his second wind, even with the strength of his partners helping him, Knight was still one man fighting an endless army.

He didn’t know how much time had past, he didn’t know how long it’d take for that spell to kick in, but he continued to fight.

Even when a werehound slammed him against a tree he continued to fight,

Even when a hound bit his leg, and he heard something snap, he continued.

Even when his own blood and sweat started to cloud his vision he continued to fight,

And fight,

And fight,

Until a blow to his head sent a ringing into his ears,

And suddenly his body recalled just how tired it was.

Knight couldn’t feel his legs

No...

Knight fell to his knees, his sword planted in the ground to try and support him

I can’t stop now...

Another Cake hound lunged at him, he swatted it away with his sword but lost his balance, falling onto his stomach. His many injuries ached

I have to protect...

His thoughts became clouded as his vision blurred, how much blood had he lost?

Fire spirit... Wind Archer...

He weakly tried to grab his sword, but his body wouldn’t move anymore. Exhaustion washed over him in a blanket of cold

I’m sorry

And as he faded from consciousness, he heard Dark enchantress speak.

“Is that all? Run out of tricks, little knight? Oh well, let's get back to business then” she hummed. Knight couldn’t fight back, he failed, he started to close his eyes, vision blurred from exhaustion and the blood no doubt leaking from his head.

He couldn’t help but wonder if this was how he’d die.

At least he can say he went down fighting...

There was a pulse of something powerful and warm. He was aware of a sound of panic amongst the cake monsters, maybe even Dark Enchantress herself. But that all didn’t matter as he felt a hand gently settle on his back, and then the warmth of healing magic flow into him. Tiredly he looked up

And saw the gentle face of the Millennial tree looking back at him.

“Rest now brave knight, you’ve done more than enough, let me handle the rest” he spoke, something ethereal yet comforting in his tone,

knight couldn’t help but agree, he closed his eyes and as he fell into a healing sleep, and for the first time in a while

Knight had a feeling things would be fine.

Notes:

Let’s be honest has anyone ever woken up with their first alarm?
…if you actually have and not like taken a few minutes to wake up then you have some mighty energy.

…also I’ve stated that this is an au that doesn’t strictly follow canon right? That’s gotta be established by now right?

Chapter Text

A pulse of magic ripples throughout the land. Reaching the furthest corners of Earthbread.

Even the humble Cookie kingdom felt it, the residents pausing their activities to marvel at the scene.

Frost Queen looked out in the distance, a part of her knowing the Millennial Tree was that way. The soft voice of Cotton got her attention.

“Frost Queen? What was that just now?” She asked, something like awe in her voice.

“It felt like magic... warm yet powerful. I don’t recognize it” Frost queen gazed down at the smaller girl beside her, before looking out once again.

“It was the Millennial Tree, young Cotton” she answered, a small smile creeping on the ice queen's face.

“It means our Knight has succeeded”

The Millennial Tree stood tall in the center of the grove, a sleeping Knight by his feet, and an aura of power all around him.

Most of the cake monsters that remained whimpered and backed away, clearly intimidated by the newly awoken god.

“I must admit, I was a bit curious what events could have transpired for me to be woken up early, though legendary cookies being forced into darkness is most definitely that kind of event” he spoke with a calm smile, though a few specks of a cold rage were hinted at under the surface.

“Dark Enchantress, I can’t say if I’m impressed or disappointed that you’d stoop so low as to force others into the dark. I always thought you were above that” He looked up at the woman in question, who was gripping her staff hard enough her knuckles had surly turned white, the Great Tree then looked out over the army, causing more of those monsters to back away under his gaze,

“And bringing your horde into my grove as well? You wound me, my child.”

The remaining monsters tried to stand their ground, but even they were intimidated.

The pure magic that the other gave off felt stronger than anything they’d ever experienced.

And even those that feared Dark Enchantress soon learned to fear the Tree more.

The Enchantress hid her fear behind a look of utter hatred as she growled.

“You... you should have stayed asleep!” She spat, the Tree was unphased

“I believe this stunt of yours has gone on too long, Enchantress” the Tree spoke, the gentle smile on his face betraying the colder tone that creeped into his voice. “You’ve overstepped your bounds, you even dragged my progeny into it. A shame” he sighed. The enchantress cried out and launched an energy attack at the other, but with a wave of his hand it dispelled.

And then in a blink, the other was in the air in front of the other.

“Go home, and reconsider your actions” a rune circle appeared behind him. And before the Enchantress even could scream she was blasted with magic.

As she was launched away, the tree knew she’d survive, but she’d be hurt enough to not be an issue for a while.

That should be a relief for everyone.

At seeing their leader defeated, any of the cake monsters that hadn’t fleas before did so now, tails tucked between their legs and whimpers echoing through the woods.

And soon the grotto was empty of all but two souls.

“Now then,” Millennial Tree hummed to himself. Settling himself back on the forest floor,

“I believe I have some Legendaries to purge the darkness from” He glanced back at the unconscious human briefly.

He decided he could spare a moment, it couldn’t be that comfortable to be laying face down in the dirt after all.

Moonlight felt like she had woken from a dream,

No, not a dream, a nightmare.

A nightmare full of darkness and prowling monsters, of bitter hatred and whispered threats. But like the light at the end of the tunnel, a warm light had pushed away the dark.

And the morning finally came.

Moonlight opened her eyes to see Millennial Tree  smiling warmly at her.

“Hello, dear Moonlight. I hope I didn’t keep you waiting”

Moonlight gasped, a smile soon spreading across her face,

“Millennial Tree!” She couldn’t help her excitement in seeing an old friend, she wrapped the other into a hug, which he returned with a chuckle. It was brief, and they pulled apart moments later,

“I was just about to go and purge the darkness from dear Sea Fairy, would you care to join me? I’m sure she’d be very glad to see you when she wakes up”

Tree said, Moonlight nodded without hesitation, and as soon as she summoned her crescent moon seat the two were off.

Cold, dark, and alone. Sunken down to the bottom of the sea, her moon clouded by the waves and the dark.

She couldn’t move, she couldn’t see, she couldn’t feel.

But suddenly, there was a wave of warmth, she looked up, and suddenly there was a beam of light, and through it she could see the surface.

She could see the moonlight shining.

Welcoming her home.

The ice had melted away along with the darkness as the Tree smiled at Sea Fairy, the waters of her hair and dress returning to their usual waterfalls.

“...Millennial Tree?” She blinked, a bit dazed, last she recalled was fighting someone, and then cold.

“I’m very glad to see you well, though I think someone else here is more excited” and with a nod of his head, Sea Fairy looked over and gasped.

Moonlight sat upon her crescent shaped perch, she wasn’t able to float like the Great Tree could, but she didn’t seem bothered, she was smiling, tears of relief poking from the corners of her eyes.

“Moonlight!” Sea Fairy called, reaching over.

“Sea Fairy!” She met the other halfway, locking into a tight hug, words of relief and comfort exchanged between them.

Millennial Tree couldn’t help but smile at the sight, but he didn’t feel like he should intrude for too long,

So he quietly excused himself. He still had another set of lovers to reunite after all.

He felt exhausted, heavy armor on his shoulders, a heavy head he tried to hold up, the flicks of fire trying desperately to hold out.

Just a bit longer they said

Just a bit longer, do it for them, it repeated.

But he was tired, and the call of sleep sounded so tempting....

But like a match to a powder keg, suddenly there was a spark, and an eruption of flames.

The weight burnt away, mere cinders in the air.

And he felt alive again.

The Tree took a few steps back as Fire Spirits flames roared back to life, back to their burning glory. He laughed a bit as he reveled in the warmth, though it took him a moment to realize just who was standing in front of him, and likely helped him.

“Oh! Oh shi- hi?? Did- did Knight send you??” He sputtered, immediately trying to straighten up his posture to not look careless, the Millennial Tree chuckled at the attempt, finding it amusing.

“I suppose you could say that. Though, I’ve still got one more stop to make, if assume you’d like to be there when Archer is restored?” He hummed out the question but Fire Spirit didn’t even hesitate before giving his answer.

“Yes! Hell yes please! Let’s go!” And he was already dashing out of his fortress, leaving a confused yet relieved Pitaya, who had been waiting outside, to make a questioning noise.

“Talk later! Gotta get to Archie! BYE!”

The Tree, who was exiting the gates now, hummed a bit at the dragon's confusion.

“He is quite the spirited Legendary.” He laughed, Pitaya could only nod in agreement,

Though after looking at Millennial Tree for a long moment, they asked.

“Do I know you from somewhere?”

“Hm, perhaps, perhaps not,” the tree tilted his head as he answered cryptically, “but for now I best be off, lest Fire Spirit get himself lost in the forest.

And before Pitaya could make any other comments the Great Tree was gone.

The world was covered in a purple haze, everything blurred, yet the important things were distinct. The enemy looked the same, the targets looked the same. He had no thoughts aside from his one drive.

Fulfill his duty, his purpose, her orders.

He was nothing, wanted nothing, desired nothing but to serve his purpose.

He was...

Suddenly able to see, and warmth and light overtook his senses. And gently, he was reminded that he was always much more than the purpose he served.

He was a living being.

Archer gasped as he looked up, his forest greens returned, and those Raven wings having faded into dark feathers on the forest floor around him.

Gently smiling at him was the Millennial Tree.

A face he had been waiting to see for centuries.

“My faithful Wind, it has been too long.”

Archer almost couldn’t believe what he was seeing, he knew this day would come eventually, and yet it still felt unreal.

The Millennial Tree was awake,

And here in front of him.

Before his mind registered his own actions Wind Archer rushed forward to hug his father, an action the other returned.

“You’re back,” Archer spoke.

“I am, and you did so well guarding my grotto while I was asleep.” The pride was evident in the orders voice, a smile spread across his face,

“Though, perhaps we can properly catch up another time, I believe there’s others who’d like to see you first”

Millennial Tree spoke with a smile, looking to the side at someone the other couldn’t see, Archer was a little confused, but pulled away from the hug.

Though almost as soon as he pulled away, he was tackled into another hug, this time by Fire spirit, who cheered.

“Archie!”  The relief was clear in Spirits voice, he laughed joyfully as he pressed quick kisses into Wind Archers cheek. The other couldn’t help but laugh as well at Spirits antics, returning the hug with a tight embrace of his own.

“You’re alright,” Archer spoke,

“Of course I’m alright! I was more worried about you!” Spirit smiled right back at him, archer couldn’t help but chuckle a bit,

It was good to be back, Fire Spirit safe in his arms.

Now all they were missing was...

Wind Archer looked around, and worry started to settle into his features as he realized someone very important to them wasn’t there.

“Where’s Knight?” He asked.

“He wasn’t with me..” Fire Spirit answered, his own face falling into concern. Thankfully, the third being with them spoke up

“You’re worried about your partner, aren’t you?” The tree spoke. Both fire and wind beings nodded. The older being gave them a gentle smile.

“Do not fret, he is resting at my roots, Wind Archer knows the way, go to him”

That seemed to be all they needed to hear, Wind Archer gave a quick bow, which Fire Spirit copied quickly before Archer grabbed him by the hand and practically dragged him along as he ran. He was letting out startled exclamations as Millennial Tree watched them fade into the forest. He chuckled to himself.

Ah love.

Fire Spirit was glad he could fly, because with how quickly Wind Archer was moving he was sure he would have been dragged like a rag doll through the forest, he tried to keep his flames low as to not accidentally burn any of the trees, he had enough control to do so easily but with how anxious he was to see Knight, he wouldn’t be surprised if his flames aced up.

Archer was moving as fast as the wind could take him. His own anxieties over seeing the human carrying him forward, he knew the way by heart, so he continued on.

Soon, they saw the trees arch and act as a natural gateway to somewhere warm, light leaking through the branches,

And there they came upon the grove, a large tree overlooking the place, Golden ruins shone on its trunk, spreading across its roots, magic radiated from the place, the tree’s bark was split open, resembling a chrysalis that had been newly cracked open.

And tucked against the tree, chest slowly rising and falling evenly with his breaths, layed the sleeping form of their beloved human.

“Knight!”

“Knighty!”

The two raced over to him. Their presence disturbing the sleeping human, pulling him from his light slumber,

His body ached, and his mind gently complained about being woken up, but he felt like it was important, so he pushed himself up slightly, trying to focus on the fighter who woke him up

Knight blinked up at them, his mind taking a moment to register who exactly was in front of him.

But as soon as he realized who it was he smiled tiredly.

“Fire Spirit, Wind Archer... I did it.”

“You sure did, Knighty! Look at you! Waking up gods, I'd hug you tight but you looked roughed up still and I don’t want to break anything” Fire Spirit gave a nervous laugh, though Wind Archer already looked to be checking the human over for injuries.

“Yeah... Dark Enchantress showed up and I had to fight off her cake monsters... I think the Great Tree healed me but, I still feel tired” he wasn’t sure how long he had been asleep anyways, Archer hummed.

“I can’t see anything major broken, but rest is very much recommended... you have been traveling for a while.”

“Yeah! And you had to deal with all of that hag’s bull! Didn’t someone important say something about breaks after big adventures?” Spirit looked between Archer and Knight for some sort of confirmation, to which Archer rolled his eyes with a smile.

It was familiar, the usual loving banter Knight remembered.

But it wasn’t a memory this time, it was the present

Knight smiled, pulling his two partners closer in their hug.

“I missed you, so much”

“Aww, missed you too Knighty~” Spirit grinned, returning the hug, Archer quietly smiled and pressed a gentle kiss to the humans cheek.

“I know we probably should head back to the kingdom soon, to let everyone know what happened... but I really just want to take a nap again” Knight have a tired chuckle, feeling embarrassed to be admitting that. Wind Archer smiled, taking the humans hand into his own as he settled beside him.

“Then rest, my dear Knight, you’ve more than earned it” he spoke gently, lovingly, to the other.

Fire Spirit was quick to mimic the action, taking Knights other hand into his own and settling against his other side, a familiar and comforting warmth radiating off him.

“Yeah, What Archie said. We’ll be right by you when you wake up.” He reassured. Then with a grin he added

“Then we can travel back together, just like old times, right Knighty?” The human nodded, smiling back. Traveling with his partners like before, he missed that more than anything.

But for now he felt the calls of sleep pulling him back.

So with a content sigh, he leaned against Archer’s shoulder, taking in the warmth of him and Fire spirit, and gently drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

The Millennial Tree’s grotto providing a calming ambience, leaving the reunited trio undisturbed,

And Knight could finally rest

Notes:

And that’s all she wrote!

At least until the epilogue, I’m working on that currently, hoping to get this finished by the end of the month

Good timing too, collage started up again, I manage to finish this up during my break haha.

I’ll save my final thoughts on this whole project for the epilogue, so for now I’ll say

Chapter 11: Home again

Summary:

Knight, Fire Spirit, and Wind Archer travel back to the cookie kingdom, having brief encounters with friends along the way

Notes:

Gonna apologize if this seemed a bit rushed pace wise, I had a lot of points I wanted to hit and I did not want this to drag on too long.

The boys get to go home :D

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

When Knight awoke, he and his partners started their journey home.

Their pace was slower, arguably more relaxed, perhaps because Knight still had aches from healing battle injuries, but perhaps it was just because the trio wished to spend more time together,

The forest felt peaceful now that it’s guardian was returned to normal, along with the Great Tree’s revival, the place almost felt excited.

Knight even began to see the usual forest critters again, he hadn’t realized they were missing until he saw a few birds fly by.

Archer sometimes paused to check in on them, sometimes even chatting with them.

Fire Spirit and Knight were still unsure if he actually understood the forest animals or not, both were too stubborn to ask though.

The routine felt familiar, they had fallen into what the trio usual did in their adventures in the evening,

Knight would set up camp, Fire spirit helping with the fire, while Wind Archer scavenged or hunted for food, (Knight had run out of his food supplies quickly after there were two more mouths to feed)

Over the campfire light they would chat, telling stories or simply reminiscing into the night. And Knight would fall asleep with both of his partners by his side.

Warm and secure

Even with their slower pace they had made good progress, the lack of monsters certainly made things quicker.

And soon enough they reached the edge of Dragon’s Valley.

“Will it take long to walk across?” Wind Archer asked, looking over to Fire spirit who shrugged

“It shouldn’t? The monsters are gone and the Tribe isn’t too far, if we keep up a good pass we can probably get there and leave before it gets dark”

“We can always spend the night at the tribe if needed, Mala Sauce is a friend of mine,” Knight added.

“We aren’t exactly in a rush”

“True true-“

Of course the discussion was broken by the sound of a dragon's roar,

Archer immediately readied his bow as Knight tensed. But Spirit only grinned.

“Easy Archie, I know this one”

And sure enough, the dragon was a familiar one. Pitaya Landing a few feet in front of the trio.

“Fire Spirit! You ran off before I could even get a look at you!” The dragon spoke with a sharp toothed smile. Spirit shrugged as he floated up to them.

“Sorry bout that big guy, had to make sure my partners were okay first, you know?” Spirit gestured back at the other two beings there.

The dragon looked over at the other two, Wind archer still held his bow in one hand, but Knight kept his sword in its sheath, simply giving a small wave in greeting.

“Well look at that, You survived little Knight! Perhaps you’re not as puny as I thought” Pitaya let out a cackling laugh at their own comment. Knight nervously chuckled, Fire spirit grinned as he dashed back over to Knight and leaned against his shoulder,

“He’s an amazing fighter ‘Taya! You should really see him in action sometime”

“Not anytime soon I hope,'' Archer mumbled. Pitaya’s ear twitched as they looked down at Knight.

“Perhaps, but only when he’s recovered. It’s not worth the effort if I can’t take part in a good fight!”

‘They’re still only concerned about battle huh?’ Knight thought to himself.

“we better keep moving, we gotta stop by the Mala tribe and pick up Knights horse” Wind Archer reminded, which Fire spirit gave a thumbs up to

“Right! Right, I’ll see you later then ‘Taya?” Fire Spirit have a look back to the dragon who crossed their arms.

“You better!”

And with that the group gave their goodbyes and continued on

The red dragon seemed in a better mood at least, probably because their friend Fire spirit was okay now, the human thought.

And at that thought Knight was suddenly reminded of something,

Something very important he was planning on asking Fire spirit.

And with the dragon now completely out of sight now was the perfect time to bring it up.

“Fire Spirit” Knight spoke, the other flinched at his suddenly flat tone. He knew what that tone meant, and it was nothing good.

Ohhh no.

“Spirit, honey, sugar, darling, light of my life” Knight gave a cold smile as he deadpanned

“Why did you not tell me that Pitaya was still alive?? And has a cookie form as well??” The anger was present, no real malice behind it but still the annoyance was clear.

Fire spirit laughed nervously as he shrunk away, pointed ears pinned down.

“Ahhaaa uh, did I not mention that? Aw gee..”

“Did you seriously not tell Knight about the red dragon? I thought you said you would” Archer raised a brow at Spirit, who only seemed to sink further to the ground.

“ARCHER KNEW BUT NOT ME??”

“Okay honestly, I think I just forgot. The guy wasn’t much of an immediate threat anymore! Plus they actually like me now! I’m rolling with what I got here!” Fire Spirit weakly tried to defend himself, giving a nervous smile to Knight

“You’re the worst, I’ve been betrayed, I’ll never recover from this” the human deadpanned

“Knighty noooo”

Though with that discussion finally out in the open, the mood soon returned to its regular feel.

And it only got more excited as the Mala Tribe came into view

The trio were welcomed by the warriors, who seemed in much better condition than how Knight left them, which made him smile a bit.

Though he only smiled more when a familiar warrior came running over to him.

Mala Sauce greeted Knight by grabbing him in a hug and lifting him off the ground, Laughing in delight.

“Look at you! Our little dragon slayer’s alive and well! You must have succeeded right? All those monsters are gone and this living torch is back to his flaming self too!” She grinned, spinning Knight around once before putting his feet back on the ground.

“Hell Yeah He did! He fought off the enchantress army! Not to mention at least three other corrupted legendaries.” Fire Spirit laughed, roughly patting the slightly dizzy Knight on the shoulder.

“Gahaha! That sounds worthy of a feast to celebrate!” The chief cheered.

“W-Wait really? Can you guys really do something like that right now? You’ve got to still be recovering from those attacks...” Knight tried to defend but Mala Sauce didn’t seem to be having it.

“Nonsense! We’re the Mala tribe! We’re always prepared for a feast with friends!”

“Some hot food sounds amazing right now Mala. Hey Archie, think you can handle the spice? I know Knight can handle it but you’re more of a neutral pallet guy aren’t ya?” Fire Spirit Playfully elbowed Wind Archer who seemed to consider it, then crossed his arms with a determined look.

“I’ll find something I like, it is impolite to decline a meal from a friend-“

“That’s the spirit!”

It became very clear then that the trio would be staying the night. For a feast put together in an afternoon, the Tribe was full of energy and cheer. The food was delicious, and spicy, and the company familiar and warm.

Knight slept that night with a full stomach,

The next day, they were off again, but not before Mala led them to the stables.

“Told ya id take good care of him, and I kept that promise well!” Mala Sauce declared as she gestured to the stable containing a familiar companion.

Macaroon trotted up to their owner when they spotted him, it had been a while, they must have missed him.

Knight smiled as he reached up to pet the horse's muzzle.

“Missed you too Mac.” Macaroon gave a happy whinny at the attention.

Soon the horse was saddled and ready to travel, Knight pulled himself onto them, Fire spirit, floating ahead, and wind archer sitting just behind Knight. The trio waved the tribe off as they departed, Mala Sauce sending them off with a promise of returning to the kingdom once everything had settled in the village.

And with Macaroon by their side, the pace quickened.

The kingdom was only a few days away, and Knight for one was eager to return home.

Though to say anything, Knight was surprised to see none other than Frost Queen at the gates, almost like she was expecting him.

Fire Spirit and Wind Archer we’re quick to give a small bow in greeting to her, Knight doing so as well, best he can on a horse anyways.

“You’ve made it back alive,” she said, “how fortunate, everyone’s been awaiting your return, Sea Fairy and Moonlight arrived a few days ago.”

“That’s reassuring to hear, Lady Frost Queen” Knight relaxed somewhat, And with that, Frost Queen gave a nod and headed back inside the kingdom, well, nothing left to do but follow her in then.

No matter how many quests he went on, Knight would never get over the feeling of relief he got when he returned home.

Seeing the familiar buildings and faces around,

It felt welcoming.

“Man, I missed this place, think Devil and Angel are doing okay?” Fire spirit thought aloud, Archer hummed.

“They’ll definitely be happy to see you again, that Devil always seemed attached to you.”

“I think the kid knows a good influence when he sees one” the fire being grinned

“....you realize this is Devil we’re talking about right?”

Knight quietly listened to the two's conversation as he dismounted his horse, petting them on the neck.

Mentally he went through what he should do next, getting Macaroon back to their stable and cleaned up seemed good, then he could head home after checking in with everyone. A shower did sound good right about now

Though when he felt someone approach Knight looked over,

And quickly moved to straighten his posture when he saw it was both Moonlight and Sea Fairy who had approached.

“WAh! Lady Moonlight, Lady Sea Fairy!” Knight squeaked in surprise, which got both Fire and Wind beings attention.

Well, Knight did intend to apologize next time he saw sea fairy... and she is right there, so looking towards her he gave her a bow and spoke

“Lady Sea Fairy I sincerely apologize for the outcome of our battle-“

“The apology is appreciated, but unneeded Knight” Sea Fairy waved her hand, cutting him off, “you did what you had to, else you would have died. I can not fault you for for that”

“You’re too kind, Lady Sea Fairy” Knight felt embarrassed, thankfully Moonlight spoke up before any awkward silence could settle in.

“We are all glad that you survived safe and sound, Knight... in fact, I think there’s a few others eagerly awaiting your return” moonlight featured behind her, and Knight looked over to see who she was talking about.

When he made eye contact with Princess, she grinned, letting out an excited scream as she charged at him,

Knight managed to brace for impact before she tackled him into a tight hug.

“Knight! You’re back!!”

“I missed you too princess.” Knight laughed, hugging his friend back before they pulled away.

“Aw what? We don’t get tackled either?” Fire Spirit playfully whines as Princess grinned mischievously at him.

“Oh? You want some too? Then come here!” Spirit yelped as Princess immediately went to tackle him. The fire elemental trapped in a tight hug from the princess.

“She’s as energetic as always” Archer smiled as Knight chuckled,

“She missed you guys” Knight smiled warmly at the scene.

“Princess! Princess I need to breathe-“ Fire spirit wheezed

“You were gone for so long! I’m not letting you go yet!” The woman laughed,

The two’s antics made Knight chuckle, the familiarity truly welcoming, he almost didn’t notice the light sound of commotion a bit away, sounded something like ‘a new cookie’ the younger kids always got excited for that.

Though when Archer suddenly snapped his attention to the kingdom's entrance, Knight realized maybe he should pay attention too. He was confused as to why Archer looked so surprised, though when he followed the others gaze his question was answered.

The Millennial Tree had walked through the gates. Gingerbrave and Custard Cookie III were among the first cookies to be greeting him, they looked rather small when compared to the Legendary Tree, yet he still held that comforting smile about him.

“...well what are the odds?” Knight mumbled to himself, seems the Tree intended to stick around closer to home than he thought.

“Knight if you could excuse me I really should-“

Wind archer looked back at his partner, but Knight simply nodded.

“Do what you’ve got to, I’ll follow you in a minute.” And with that reassurance, Wind Archer jogged off towards the tree, joining the welcoming group and slipping into whatever conversation had sprung up.

Knight looked back to his friend who still had Spirit caught in a tight hug, as amusing as it was he should probably say something.

“Your Excitableness, there’s a newcomer to the kingdom, we should probably go greet them” now that got her attention, she looked over and finally put Spirit down.

“Really? What are we waiting for then! Let’s go!” And with that she took Knight by the arm and pulled him along to the welcome group, Fire Spirit was close behind, mumbling something along the lines of,

“Oh hey, that’s Archie’s dad.”

Various cookies were gathered to greet the new face, some of the younger ones seemingly not realizing just who exactly this Legendary was, but he didn’t seem to mind. The Millennial Tree simply gave a gentle smile. Though after a while of answering various questions he finally said,

“This little kingdom is quite lovely, I hope you wouldn’t mind if I stayed for a while?” Millennial Tree spoke, and when the cookies nearby made noises of agreement, it was safe to say the decision was made.

Knight would have to get used to seeing the Great Tree around more often, but that was a change he could live with.

He was just glad Fire Spirit and Wind Archer we’re home

Meanwhile nearby, a lone Ancient watches on,

Pure vanilla smiled to himself, relieved to see that the legendaries had returned safe and sound, along with Knight himself, who looked banged up and tired, but glowing with the pride of a successful adventure.

There suddenly was the sound of ticking clocks and space being torn open, and as Pure Vanilla snapped his attention over to it an unfortunately familiar face smiled at him.

“Well that was fun!” Timekeeper smiled, closing the rift behind them as they hopped out.

“Well I’m... glad... to see you are unharmed” Pure Vanilla tried not to let his unease show, Timekeeper was always an unusual being, he could never get a clear read on her or her intentions.

It didn’t help that they were oddly insistent on bothering him.

“Of course I’m unharmed, when I saw everything about to go down I just stayed in the rift and watched the show. Not even Dark Enchantress can get there.” They hummed, sitting on their Sonic Embroiderer as they slowly kicked their legs. “Well, even if she did I’d kick her out immediately, assuming the rift exposure doesn’t kill her” she laughed, Pure Vanilla was just confused.

“Well... regardless, I am glad you’re safe, I’m not sure what anyone would do had you fallen as well-“

“Oh everyone would be doomed” she stated with a dark smile. After a moment she laughed though,

“But that didn’t happen. And I’m sure Enchantress won’t be a big issue anymore. We have the Millennial Tree now” they looked out at the mention of the tree,

Said being was currently being shown around the kingdom by an excited Fig and Mango, the elder being having a calm yet delighted smile as the tour continued. Pure Vanilla followed her gaze, then slowly nodded with a hum,

“I suppose so-“

“I mean especially in this timeline he is very powerful, it’s unlikely anything truly world threatening can ever happen here as long as he is around” Timekeeper suddenly cut in, as they usually did with some topics, and yet even when he was aware of this Pure vanilla found himself reeling every time. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before he spoke again.

“That is a relief, perhaps I can focus on finding my friends now-“

“A shame this isn’t the main timeline, the action was a lot more fun here.”

“Huh?” He keeps getting cut off, yet timekeeper didn’t seem too bothered, she simply raised a hand to her chin and thought aloud,

“Interesting parallels though, at least one person always gets corrupted and it leads to Dark Enchantress suffering a devastating blow! Perhaps she should just stick to manipulation, that might give her better results”

“...what?” Pure Vanilla blinked in pure confusion.

“Oh, Don’t worry about it” she waved her hand dismissively before hopping off their scissors. Their heels clicked on the ground before declaring.

“I’m getting a sandwich! Have fun finding Hollyberry, try not to piss off any dragons” and with that they were walking off, humming an unfamiliar tune to themselves.

Pure vanilla blinked once, twice, then pinched his nose with a sigh. Timekeeper was a confusing one,

But at least he could take comfort in the fact that everything would be alright in the near future.

Sure there might be later conflicts but for now,

That was more than enough for him.

Notes:

Timekeeper is my excuse to make fourth wall jokes, you know they would.

Anyways that’s the end of it. I’m gonna admit, for a story that started as a booster shot endured fever dream, I’m happy with how it turned out! I did what I wanted to do and here we are.
I will admit some scenes could be better, but well I can always edit them later, and I’m still learning so I can only improve from here right?

I hope you all enjoyed, and will stick around for some of my other cookie fics, ive got a main au and like a handful of stories I’ve been jumping between writing.

And as always, let me know of any spelling or grammar errors, comments are always appreciated
