Work Text:
O5-1, exhausted, looked up from her computer to the framed photographs in her office. Photos of her, the early Council, The Administrator as well as other associates. She often wondered how her life would have turned out if something had gone different.
She remembered her life in the Garden, with Adam. She remembered how carefree life was, beneath those Two Trees. And the fruit. That damned fruit. She led her family out of the garden and made a vow to herself to protect her children.
She remembered the building of Audapaupadopolis. She remembered looking at the sky and the world with her family. The curiosity and the wonder. She was humanity's First Queen. And witnessed her husband's sin. She had marveled as Adam pulled a star from beyond the world as a gift for Seth. She had watched as that iron crown brought ruin to her family. She had seen each of her sons rebel because of it. She saw her kingdom collapse; even before the Children of the Night came across the sea.
And then, she met that fuzzy bastard. It was looking for energy from emotional turmoil and what better target was there than a queen who had watched her kingdom die and a mother who had seen her family tear itself apart? She would do anything to protect her children from any further harm and eagerly accepted it's contract; with a wish to make sure humanity would never truly end. She would spend her life wandering the Earth, fighting horror after horror. But even with her best efforts, the horrors would not end.
She had found that she was not alone in that desire. She met scholars, commanders, leaders; with the same desire to protect humanity from the dark. Aaron Siegel, Frederick Williams Abernathy, Felix Carter and many others. Even after those with other aims such as Jeremy Marshall, Thomas Carter, William Boeing left to pursue their own goals, her and her colleagues would continue; uniting with other organizations to create humanity's bulwark against the darkness. And she was at the top of it.
She had told them about Magical Girls, Kyubey, Witches and other anomalies early on. And The Foundation would spend no small effort to contain and understand them. Considering their research on souls, she could likely get her own soul back and yet; she did not. Perhaps she wanted to retain her abilities if the need ever arose. After all, even with the security detail and life-extension of an Overseer, she was still technically mortal. And now, even after all those years of fighting and protecting; both as a Magical Girl and as an Overseer, she couldn't help but doubt.
She doubted many things. Doubting whether her children deserved to be protected, whether it was worth it to continue to fight Witches, whether her actions as an Overseer were just, whether she could trust her own peers. And each time, she pushed them back to the depths of her mind. Because she knew that if she didn't; her fate would be irreversibly sealed. She couldn't let herself give into despair no matter what. And yet; those doubts would never truly go away and kept eating away at her.
She snapped back to the present when she heard a phone ringing. It was a call from Frederick "Fritz" Williams Abernathy. The Administrator. It was about some personal project he wanted her help with before the next Council meeting. She said that she would look into it. She had mixed feelings about her past but she couldn't let it distract her from the present. After all, the work goes on.
