Chapter 1: Family Game Night
Chapter Text
It was Family Game Night at the Beach House, and Steven, his family and the gems were playing Steven and Connie's favourite game, Labyrinths and Loot. Connie introduced Steven to this game back when they first started dating.
She then introduced it to the gems and they sort of picked up on it, Pearl especially. Connie had recently taught the game to Rebecca and she really took to it.
Connie figured that the game would teach her some useful math skills that she could implement into her studies once she starts elementary school next year, plus it will also stimulate her imagination.
There were still some aspects Rebecca was still having a tough time grasping, but Connie was always happy to help her in those regards.
Connie was playing the role of the Labyrinth Lady (AKA The Labyrinth Lord if a male was playing the role). "The heroes continue on their way north, when suddenly arrows fly into the nearby tree as a warning!" Connie narrated.
"I use I cast my Eye Of The Eagle spell to inspect the direction the arrows came from" said Garnet. Connie rolls the dice "The spell works, your spell reveals a bandit's camp, one of them appears to be sniper."
"I use try to sneak my way up to the bandit's camp" said Amethyst. "Amethyst! You're a barbarian, a class with the lowest stealth stats in the game!" Pearl chided.
"Ugh, see? This is why this game's no fun with you, Pearl. It's always stats, stats, stats with you" Amethyst retorted. "Because that's how the game works Amethyst! Understanding your statistics is the key to victory!" said Pearl.
"What's the point in paying attention to that junk when everything is determined by the dice roll?" Amethyst shrugged. "Because better stats can turn even a lower outcome of the dice roll into a good outcome" Pearl explained.
"Hey, quit arguing, you two, and let Mommy roll the dice, I want my turn!" said Rebecca. "The sniper spies you and shoots you right in the chest" Connie rolls the dice "Oooh! Critical hit! 20 Hit points, that's your remaining HP!"
"Aw, crud, my guy's dead!?" Amethyst grumbled. "He wouldn't have died if someone hadn't gone headfirst into all battles, making our cleric us up all his Magic Points to heal that reckless barbarian."
"What!? I'm a barbarian, that's what I do" Amethyst said as an excuse. "And that's why there are none of them left" Pearl argued. "Okay, Rebecca, honey, while those two are busy, why not take your turn?" Connie suggested.
"I attempt a sneak attack on their base" said Rebecca. "What? You're not gonna scold her for doing exactly what I did?" Amethyst commented. "Rebecca's an assassin, who has very high stealth stats" Pearl pointed out.
Connie rolled the dice "18, Killerebecca uses the nearby woods to her advantage and successfully catches the bandits off guard!" "Ha ha! Take that you lousy bandits!" said Rebecca.
"I am so relieved she only picked the assassin job class because she thought the picture of the female assassin looked cool" Steven whispered to his wife.
"Okay, Steven, your turn, what do you want to do?" asked Connie. "I don't know, I'm out of MP and I don't know how farther the next town is, I can't really do anything right now" said Steven.
"Should have thought about that before you chose to be a cleric, they can't do much" said Amethyst.
"And who was it that's been using the healing abilities of the cleric class to carry you throughout this quest?" Steven reminded her "and besides, every team of adventurers needs a medic."
"Good work, Rebecca" said Garnet, patting Rebecca on the back.
After a while, the game was finished. "Wow, Connie, that was your best quest yet" said Steven.
"I know, that plot twist where Count Culprit turned out to be the true lord of darkness caught me by surprise" said Pearl "I thought for sure it was gonna be Redd Herring, The Bandit King."
"Well, Rebecca, we let you stay up for a while so that we could finish this quest, but now it's really time for bed" said Steven "for me and your mother too, so let's get our teeth brushed, what do ya say?"
"Okay, right after I help Mommy tidy up!" said Rebecca with all the game pieces in a box. Rebecca opened up the closet and out rolled the Moon Goddess statue.
"I thought Rebecca took it" said Amethyst. "I took it from her when I found out she had switched it out for one of her own toys after we got home" said Steven.
"Oh yeah...you needed it for your big important mission..." said Rebecca "...it failed because of me." "What!? No! No no no no! That's not it!" said Steven.
"No, it's true...you...you need the statue to stop the big ocean tower from falling down and I was just playing with it" said Rebecca who started to cry. "Nooo, honey!" Steven tried to calm down her child.
But it was too late, Rebecca ran into her room. "I just made my own daughter cry..." Steven lamented. "Want me to talk to her?" Connie offered. "No, I think it'd mean more to her if I did the talking" said Steven.
Steven knocked on the door and entered "Hey, honey?" "Rebecca's not here, she's in blanket town" said Rebecca under the blankets. "Well, is there anyway I can get you out of there?" asked Steven.
"No...I ruined your first mission, you're gonna yell at me" said Rebecca. "Rebecca, when have I ever yelled at you? I didn't yell at you when I first found out you took the statue, and I'm not gonna yell at you now" said Steven.
Rebecca peeked out from under the blanket. "Ah! There's my girl" said Steven "since you're out, I'll let you in on a secret...it was the gems who took the statue from the spire in the first place, it was just a test."
"A Test?" asked Rebecca. "Yeah, they weren't checking to see if I could accomplish the mission, they were checking to see how I'd perform on a mission..." said Steven.
"Are you telling the truth?" asked Rebecca. "Yes, I'm telling the truth, and to prove it, I'm gonna let you keep the statue" said Steven.
Chapter 2: Rebecca's Full Fledged Crystal Gem Test!
Chapter Text
For a while now, Rebecca had been an honorary Crystal Gem, going only on the missions where there were no monsters, or missions with the least threat to her life and she could only go as long as Steven was there to supervise.
During those missions, she had shown potential that she could handle more difficult missions, however it was too soon to make that decision then.
The gems and Steven & Connie sat at the dinner table. "Well, I cannot deny you have bought up some good points, Rebecca is capable of defending herself with that blank of hers" said Connie.
"However, as her parents, it's natural that we care about her safety and well being and so we're kind of unsure about this proposal of yours" said Steven.
"Steven, we just think she might be ready to be a full fledged crystal gem, we don't wanna marry her" said Amethyst. "Proposal has another meaning besides an offer of marriage, you know" said an annoyed Steven.
"I know, I just wanted to bug ya" Amethyst giggled. "Amethyst, we're trying to be serious here" said Connie "you need to remember that Rebecca is only five years old, so we want to make sure that if we agree to this, she'll be safe in your hands."
"Yeah, and that means we don't want a repeat of what happened when you took her on that mission to destroy that Communication Hub thing" Steven added "so no Sugilite with Rebecca around, understand?"
"Yes, I understand" said Garnet "rest assured, if you do agree to this, we will do everything to make sure Rebecca comes back home unharmed. Especially with me around, I take my status as godmother seriously."
"Every time you see an opportunity, you just have to rub it in, don't you?" Pearl grumbled. "There's no point to having the bragging rights if you don't use them" Garnet answered.
"Back to the task at hand!" Connie chimed in "before we agree to this, we just want to ask...what bought you to the conclusion that she'd be ready?"
"It was during last night's game, Rebecca was pretty much in charge during that whole quest" said Pearl "her decision making and strategical skills would make her an exemplary Crystal Gem!"
"Yes, but that was a game, a game based entirely around imagination" said Steven "real life and games are two very different things, if they weren't, I'd be traveling around the world as a Battlemon Trainer."
"Steven's insane fantasy aside, he does have a point" said Connie "I don't think a game is enough to convince us." "Which is why we thought up a test for her" said Pearl.
Steven and Connie looked at each other and back to the gems "What kind of test?" asked Steven. "We'll use the Temple's powers to create a labyrinth, not unlike the ones in the game Labyrinths and Loot" said Pearl.
"Wait, the temple can do that?" asked Steven. "Yes, the temple can create subspaces based upon command or what gems are occupying it" said Garnet. "Just how far ahead his gem tech from ours?" asked Connie.
"Let me put it this way: cold fusion is pretty much as old as the wheel to us" said Pearl "heck, we ditched it around the same time the first T-Rexes were roaming the earth."
"Okay, so you're making a Labyrinth..." said Connie, wanting to get back on track.
"Yes, and in this Labyrinth there will be simulated monsters and booby traps, all of which will be holographic and pose no harm to Rebecca" said Garnet "they will test her reflexes."
"There will also be puzzles designed to test her problem solving skills and the many twists and turns will test her decision making skills" Pearl added.
"Plus, she'll meet many different characters in there so it'll feel like an adventure!" Amethyst concluded. "Well, what do you think, Connie?" asked Steven.
"Well, she did say that all the danger will only be simulated and no real harm would come to her" Connie answered "so, I guess it's okay, what about you, Steven?"
"Well, it does sound like she'd enjoy it, and it sounds fun too" Steven answered honestly. "Yeah, it kind of does, and as long as she's not in real danger, I won't have to worry too much" said Connie.
"So, we got a deal?" asked Amethyst. "Well, if Rebecca passes the test, we'll consider allowing Rebecca to go on more advanced missions" Steven answered. "But no promises" Connie added.
"We understand your concerns, and we'll make sure Rebecca understands them too" Garnet said with a bow.
Chapter 3: Rebecca Quest!
Chapter Text
Rebecca was all excited when she got up this morning ever since she heard the news! The Gems said they were gonna let Rebecca be a full-fledged Crystal Gem and that meant fighting monsters!
She could barely contain how hyped she was feeling. "Be sure to eat every last drop on your plate, you're gonna need all that energy for today's test" Pearl advised. "Thank you, Pearl!" said Rebecca.
Pearl had prepared for Rebecca, a huge breakfast so that she can be all set for the big test. Garnet told her that it was gonna test her knowledge and decision making skills as well as combat skills.
"Alright, sweetie, just do your best, I know you can do it" said Steven in an encouraging tone. "Yeah! Me and Blanky are ready for anything the gems will throw at me!" said Rebecca, proudly before getting hit by a water balloon.
"Were ya ready for that?" Amethyst joked. "Amethyst" Steven and Rebecca grumbled. "Amethyst! Enough tricks, we need you to help us set up" said Garnet. "Oh right! See ya in a few!" said Rebecca.
Two hours later, it was time to begin, the doors to the temple opened. "Show 'em what you got, Rebecca" said Connie. "I will, Mommy!" said Rebecca.
The doors to the temple opened, revealing inside was what appeared to be a hallway with a banner that said "Rebecca Quest!"
"Oh, they're going for an RPG style test, Rebecca's gotten really good at those" said Connie "I'm beginning to worry a little bit less." "Alright! I'm going in, adventure ho!" Rebecca cried as she ran right in with the doors closing right behind her.
"Well, there she goes, think she'll be okay?" asked Steven. "We need to believe in her, she's our daughter after all, we just need to trust her and the gems" said Connie.
Rebecca was amazed when she got in, It looked like the starting town of an RPG. "Hello fear traveller, welcome to our village, you look like an adventurer, are you here about The Legendary Treasure?" asked an NPC.
"Treasure!? Oooh! Tell me! Tell me!" Rebecca requested. "Yes, legend has it, that somewhere in our world, sit The Three Goddesses await the arrival of a legendary hero, with a treasure to bestow upon said hero" The NPC explained.
"Hey! That's me!" said Rebecca. "Really!? YOU are the Legendary hero!?" exclaimed the NPC, who then looked to a statue behind him, a statue depicting Rebecca "By the goddesses' grace! It IS you!"
"Yeah, that's me, now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta look for the treasure!" said Rebecca. "O mighty hero, please be warned, the goddesses won't just give you the treasure, they have set up trials for you to conquer, to test your worthiness!"
"Oh yes, but there are monsters afoot, you must present yourself to the king and queen in order for them to open the gate!" said a woman NPC "you can find them in the castle way over yonder!"
As RPG towns went, this one was fairly straightforwardly designed, a simple road lined with houses and businesses by the side, with a gate at the end, sealed off, and a castle right next to it.
The security of the castle was rather easy to get by, as word spread that Rebecca was the hero of legend. The only thing inside the castle, was the throne room.
On the two thrones at the very end was a king and queen who looked very familiar to Rebecca. "Mommy!? Daddy!?" Rebecca exclaimed.
"Pray forgive me, but you must have mistaken us for others, I am the king of this faire kingdom" said The King who bore a resemblance to Steven "next to me is my queen."
"Oh, sorry your majesties, my name is Rebecca Universe, I am here on a quest for the Treasure of The Goddesses" said Rebecca. "Yes, word travels fast in this humble kingdom" said the Queen "we had heard of your arrival."
"But, as King and Queen, we do have a responsibility to our people and their safety and we cannot accept your claims based on hearsay alone" said King Steven "you must present to us, the fighting spirit within you."
"Oh...uh...okay" said Rebecca who started awkwardly doing some kung fu moves. "You must present to us, the fighting spirit within you" King Steven repeated to her.
"Wait, this could be one of the puzzles Pearl mentioned earlier..." Rebecca thought to herself "a fighting spirit must be something real, I guess, but what is it?" Rebecca pondered for a moment but then realized something!
"A fighting spirit! I get it now!" said Rebecca, as she conjured up her blank from within herself. King Steven clapped his hands and a practice dummy appeared before her. What Rebecca had to do next was pretty obvious.
"DORARARARARA!" Security Blankette completely decimated the dummy with ease. "Yes, this is what we were hoping to see, good show" said Queen Connie. "Indeed, you are the hero spoken of in legend" said King Steven.
King Steven showed Rebecca a tapestry "Long ago, a three headed witch appeared and created monsters, but the three goddesses who created this world told of a hero to come who would slay the witch and bring peace to the land" he explained.
"The goddesses did try to slay the witch, but she was too powerful even for them, so instead they sealed her away, the witch is your final trial" Queen Connie added.
"So, I have to face the other two trials and make my way to the witch!" Rebecca guessed. "Yes, indeed, now as promised, we shall open the gate...but only until you leave, after which, they must be closed again" The King nodded.
"I understand, I won't let you down your highnesses!" said Rebecca with a bow.
Outside, Rebecca stood in front of the stone gates, which slowly opened, revealing the path forward. "I love how much detail they put into this" said Rebecca.
Chapter 4: The Three Trials Of The Three Goddesses
Chapter Text
Rebecca left the gates of The Kingdom, which immediately closed the moment she set foot out of there. "Okay, looks like I am out on my own now...probably should have stocked up on adventuring gear, though...oh well"
Rebecca started her long journey in this land of the gems creation, when suddenly she heard rustling in the bushes. "A monster! Get ready, Blankie, here they come" said Rebecca.
Hopping out of the bushes was a little blue ball of slime. "A slime! Ah ha! A perfect first level enemy! They may be small, but getting rid of enough of them will give me much needed EXP" Rebecca cheered.
Rebecca started off her quest, defeating slime after slime, among other typical RPG monsters such as goblins, orcs and even mimics! She ventured forth until she came across a purple coloured ruin.
"This must be where the first trial is...the trial of Amethyst!" said Rebecca.
Rebecca entered the deep dark ruin. "So, what kind of surprises await me" she wondered. The doors then slammed behind her, and she heard a rumbling soon after.
"Oooh, whatever this is, I hope it's not like that movie I saw with Mommy and Daddy..." she said. Rebecca turned around and to her shock a huge boulder was coming down a huge ramp behind her.
"Aaah! This is exactly like that movie!" she exclaimed as she began running in the opposite direction from the boulder. As she ran she noticed holes in the walls and a switch on the floor.
Remembering exactly what happened in the movie, she leapt over the switch, so as to not get hit by the darts that were no doubt hidden in the walls. She leapt over knocked over pillars.
She was making great speed ahead of the boulder, but she had to come to an abrupt stop when she noticed a huge pit! There was no way around it, and it was too far apart for her to jump over, what could she do!?
It was at that moment where she remembered when she almost fell when she in that inverted pyramid! She let loose Security Blankette and conveniently enough, the glowing pink "wires" connecting them were at just the right length for Security Blankette to pull her across.
After passing the first trial, Rebecca took a moment to recuperate and she was ready for the next trial! She continued forth, battling any monster that would find its way to her.
She then reached a second, white ruin...The Trial of Pearl. Inside was a room that looked like a dance floor. "This must be a puzzle! But what kind of puzzle?" Rebecca wondered.
Just then, several tiles flashed in a pattern "...Yep, this is a Pearl trial" she said. Rebecca stepped on the tiles in the exact same sequence in which they lit up. When she finished stepping on the tiles, a rumbling could be heard.
A staircase then formed on the floor, leading up to a doorway up high. "Well, this was anti-climactic...I hope Garnet's is cooler than this" said Rebecca, slightly disappointed.
She ascended the staircase and found herself in front of a huge red ruin. "The final trial...the King said there's a nasty old witch in there...so if I am to beat her...I must beat this final trial!" said Rebecca.
Rebecca decided to stop for a little snack break, to heighten her energy. She stood before the doorway, breathed in and breathed out and went on in after psyching herself up!
"Who dares enter my prison!?" said three ominous voices. "It is I, Rebecca Universe! Hero of Legend!" Rebecca proclaimed. "A Hero? You? A little girl? Pathetic!" The Voices responded as a huge booming sound came closer.
Into the light, came a creature with a dragon's body and three heads, one yellow, one blue and one white. "You couldn't hope to defeat the likes of me!" The witch said.
The monstrous witch lifted her foo, trying to stomp down on Rebecca, who summoned Security Blankette and punched the sole of the witch's foot!
The witch staggered backward clutching its foot as if it had stepped on a lego brick "You will pay for that!" The witch declared as she sent several bolts of lightening in Rebecca's direction.
Rebecca dodged and dodged, trying to find an opening through the witch's attacks, but to no avail. "You thought you could stop me? The best the goddesses could do was imprison me" The Witch Bragged.
"Yeah! They imprisoned you so that I could finish the job!" Rebecca responded. "You're a fool if that's what you think!" said The Witch, breathing waves of white light.
"Dorarararararara!" Security Blankette began punching the beams of light, sending them ricocheting all over the place, hitting the Witch.
"Haha! Take that you nasty old witch!" said Rebecca "now to finish the job!" "Are you SURE you want to do that?" The Witch weakly asked. "Yeah, that's what I'm here for!" said Rebecca.
"If you defeat me and finish your quest...this world will disappear!" The Witch told her. "Huh?" "Yes, after all, this world was created as a test for you, the moment you pass...is the moment it all goes away..."
Rebecca suddenly became worried. "Yes...think of all the innocent people who's lives will abruptly end because you passed the test...is ending the lives of so many people really what a hero should do?" asked The Witch.
"No...No..." said Rebecca. "That's enough out of you, Witch!" said a familiar voice. Behind Rebecca was all the townspeople.
"We knew the truth of our existence, long before you arrived. We know we're not real, but that's okay, because we played a role in helping out a real hero to save people in the real world" said the first NPC Rebecca spoke to.
"Yes, and although we may not be real, the lessons you learned in this test are, please don't hesitate, young Rebecca" said Queen Connie.
"Yes, indeed, we are based on people you already know so, it's not truly goodbye, after all" King Steven added "so strike true, young hero and claim your reward on the other side!"
Rebecca nodded and had Security Blankette strike the Witch in the White head, causing her to disappear in a flash as huge doors opened. "Thank you everyone, you guys are amazing, even if you aren't real" said Rebecca.
"You've done well, now go, claim your treasure, I know you will like it" said King Steven, waving goodbye as he and all the other townspeople disappeared into thin air.
Rebecca went through the doors and saw the gems at a table with a big cake and a present at the end, and a banner that said "Congratulations Rebecca"
"Great going, Rebecca! You did it!" said Amethyst. "Come up here and claim your reward!" said Garnet. "Before we slice the cake...how about your 'treasure'?" Pearl suggested, giving her the present box
Rebecca excitedly opened up the box, wondering what it could be, it looked like some pink little cylinder. "Press that little button, right in the middle" said Garnet.
Rebecca pressed the button and it then extended, and atop of it is a flag. "Wow, a flag!" said Rebecca who began waving it with glee. "Don't focus on it too long, Amethyst might try to have the cake all to herself" said Garnet.
Chapter 5: Minisode 9: Future Vision
Chapter Text
Rebecca was making herself a sandwich in the kitchen, a PB&J, the signature dish for children everywhere...and basketball players (it's true, look it up). She had forgotten for a moment that she was standing on a step stool and almost fell over.
Garnet was there to catch her, however, and her sandwich. "Garnet! I'm so lucky you were there!" said Rebecca. "Luck had nothing to do with it" said Garnet adjusting her visor.
"Huh? What does that mean?" asked Rebecca. "Don't worry about it" said Garnet. "No, seriously, how do you always know where to be all the time?" asked Rebecca.
"I'm not sure you can handle that information" said Garnet. "You forced my hand, Garnet" said Rebecca who then bought out her deadliest weapon, her cute face!
"No! Not the cute face! I can't resist it, even I cannot predict it!" Garnet cried out. "Tell me, Garnet, please?" she said in her most innocent tone.
"Alright, fine...I have future vision, I can see many possible outcomes to various situations" said Garnet "It comes in handy when I need to keep my precious goddaughter out of danger."
Rebecca giggled and blushed at that remark. "So...what am I going to do in a few minutes?" asked Rebecca. "You're going to watch some of your favourite cartoons." said Garnet.
"Is there any possibility you'll watch them with me?" asked Rebecca. "Hmmm...yes" said Garnet. Garnet and Rebecca then sat down on the couch and watched Rebecca's second favourite show: My Small Horsey: Companionship Is Power!
During commercial break, Rebecca decided to take the opportunity to ask Garnet a question "Can Pearl, Amethyst or Daddy see the future too?"
"Nobody can see the future, I can see options and trajectories. Time is like a river that splits into creeks, or pools into lakes, or careens down waterfalls. I have a map and I steer the ship."
Rebecca tilted her head in confusion "...okay!" she simply said. "Commercial break ends in three...two...one!" said Garnet, and like she said, the show did in fact come out of commercial.
After the show ended, Garnet and Rebecca walked to the Big Donut. "So, what'll happen if I say 'Hi' to Sadie?" asked Rebecca. "She'll probably say 'Hi' back" Garnet answered.
Rebecca goes into the Big Donut "Hi Sadie!" said Rebecca. "Oh, Hi Rebecca" said Sadie. "The future happened, as was foretold by Garnet" Rebecca whispered "so she says, so it shall be!"
"And, what will happen if I say 'Hi' to Lars?" asked Rebecca. "He'll probably just wave, or he'll be shocked and spill scalding hot coffee on you" said Garnet. Rebecca thought for a moment.
"Hi Lars!" Rebecca suddenly greeted Lars, who was holding onto a coffee pot. Lars jumped in shock, letting loose the coffee pot. Garnet leapt in front of Garnet, taking the full blunt of the hot brown liquid.
"Yikes! Are you okay? That Coffee was scalding hot!" asked Lars. "Don't worry, I love to start my day with some hot coffee" said Garnet as she absorbed all the coffee on the surface on her body.
"That...that almost hit me..." said Rebecca.
Garnet kneeled down and looked Rebecca in the eye "Don't try and take my visions too seriously, sometimes I am wrong" said Garnet "I remember I had a similar day like today when your father was much younger."
"How much younger?" asked Rebecca. "He was older than you, still, but we had a similar conversation...I wasn't careful with my words and I made him afraid of everything" said Garnet.
"So, you're telling me not to worry about every bad thing that might happen?" asked Rebecca. "Yes, if you worry about bad things that could happen to you, you'll get all superstitious and miss out on a lot of good things that could also happen to you" Garnet told her.
"I...I think I understand...did you ever think like that before, Garnet?" asked Rebecca. "There was a time, but that was a very long time ago" said Garnet
